- While Spencer Rattler didn't feel like the right quarterback for the New Orleans Saints in the 2024 NFL Draft, the selection of a late passer is incredibly smart. The South Carolina passer has a ton of qualities the Saints clearly like including his ability to get through progressions, manage adversity, keep a calm head and use his athleticism to make plays. Entering New Orleans behind Derek Carr, Rattler has a chance to develop into a future option at quarterback for the Saints.
Day 3 of the 2024 NFL Draft for the Saints was all about development and special teams impact. Bub Means, Jaylan Ford, Khristian Boyd and Josiah Ezirim along with Spencer Rattler project as high-character young players with high ceilings. Rattler fits Kubiak's concepts. I'd say Kubiak had big skin in that draft pick.
I'm cautiously optimistic about the Spencer Rattler selection, but if Kubiak and Janoko can groom this kid, we could have something special on our hands.
He was the #1 QB prospect for a reason. He’s got natural arm talent and he’s matured hugely the last 2 years. The coaches and Carr can turn him to a stud in my opinion

Haener was basically the exact same pick.
He’ll be good. He’s the only qb in this draft that was constantly under pressure. 37% of his drop backs, against sec defenses. He wasn’t afraid, and always stepped up in the pocket. I think he’s more ready than most of the qb’s in this draft. If the coach and team keep his confidence high, he’ll do well. He plays angry with a chip on his shoulder as well. Being drafted in the 5th will enforce that even more.
I feel like rattler will be the "underdog" and stealnof the draft with the right team. I think the saints are 1 if those teams that can help him grow and rebrand themselves with this guy. Good pick imho

The issue with that is, you won’t be giving them anytime to actually develop or really know what you have before you have to cut them. It’s difficult to carry 3 or more QB’s on the 53 man roster and if they have any potential, they’re difficult to get through to the practice squad.
The Saints may only be able to carry 2 QB’s on the initial 53 man this season due to the uncertainty and numbers needed at edge and OL, if you’re keep Rattler because you just drafted him, then you’re giving up on Haener, who the Saints drafted a round higher than Rattler, after only one season.
Rinse & repeat.
Drafting a QB every year simply doesn’t work out numbers wise.
Not to mention, there’s not enough QB reps to go around to actually develop a young QB.
The starter gets most of the reps, the developmental QB usually only gets scout team reps and you need a veteran than can be prepared on very few reps, having two developmental QB’s instead of the veteran backup typically means neither are getting the number of reps they need to develop.
So what are we really doing?
The closest you can get is, always having just one developmental QB and replace them when you give up on them and draft another.

@@TheStacanova it's possible that your starting QB gets a major or minor injury that would minimize his camp and it's very possible that either your 2nd, 3rd or 4th string QB goes into those camps and ball the hell out. And I myself really don't like cheap investments but overtime you can enhance and build upon your product. Nothing like buying a fixer upper and over the years turning that thang into what you really desire. Just my 2 cents, no foul no play. But a very good analysis my brother!!

Glad we got Kool-Aid. There are a lot of loaded offenses with 3 or 4 good WR’s, good pass catching TE’s and Running backs that run good routes. Dime packages will be needed more this year than times before.
I was getting killed for saying Kool Aid was a good pick 😂 yes we needed LT but I bet they have a plan, whether it’s re-signing peat, or risner or beckton. You can’t pass on kool-aid. And we ALWAYS have a CB hurt, and Alontae’s played safety before so they could move him. It’s a good pick on so many fronts but it still gets hate it’s crazy

It’s time to go in another direction. Familiarity isn’t an excuse because the system is different. Let’s try someone different at that spot.

Dude, I'm sorry. I love your shows but let's look at the first three picks this year.
1. Fuaga. Projected 10yr starter and a hoss in the trenches.
2. McKinstry. Projected pick 28. Got him at 51 at value and he is day 1 starting CB.
3. Rattler. Projected going late 2nd/early 3rd. We got him at 150!!!! He was by far the best looking QB at the senior bowl. How are you not excited about that!?!
Go back and watch the other shows! I am excited about this class. Just wanna see how it all pans out.

Just watched his highlights... He mirrors Mahomes. Not saying that he is, but he looks just look him on the field. Big arm, can scramble, slightly above average speed, mostly when he rolls outside the pocket he finds the open man just like Mahomes does. I like what I saw! #whodat

It’s great value at the most premium position. He’s considered a dual threat unlike the other 2 QBs on the roster. Maybe that ends up paying off in 2-3 years. I like it a lot, even if nothing comes of it.

I really like our first two draft picks.
Spencer R. could be a good back-up but I doubt he will be a starter because usually the 2nd tier of QBs in the draft don't end up as starters.
I am hopeful that because this was such a deep draft that the Saints will be able to fill some of their positional needs thru the waiver wire of players that other teams cut but are still good enough to be on our O-line.
I mean who would've thought a Brock Purdy would be a Superbowl starting qb but yet he was. You never know what you get until they play

I prefer Rattler over all the QBs that were on the board at the time. He is the most physically gifted of all the QBs available on Day 3 and is more gifted than some that went on Day 1.

DA and his Staff have to get both sides of the Lines to improve. Mobile QB’s gave our Defense Fits ! We have no Running Game to speak of ! We have the RB’s but the OLine hasn’t played well in pass protection or in the run game ! The pressure is on Loomis and DA and his Staff ! They need to learn to close out games and finish strong ! The Green Bay game cost us the playoffs ! No more Excuses ! 3 Seasons in a row with no Playoffs is Unacceptable ! If we don’t get into the Playoffs this Season we should Rebuild this Organization . Bad Scouting / Drafting and giving Draft Picks away to get Players that haven’t Produced have Cost Us ! Bad Personnel Decisions have also Hurt Us ! Keeping Marcus Davenport ( Cost us 2 First Round Picks )over Trey Hendrickson is an example ! Letting Alex Anzalone go to Detroit is another ! This Current Regime has been Disappointing ! Look at the Successful Teams KC , SF , Baltimore . They’re well Coached and they have great Scouting and Drafting and Player Personnel Departments and they don’t have Cap Issues every year ! Loomis and Co. has not gotten it done in a long time ! This Franchise has needs a New Voice and a New Vision !
I am trying to like this draft class. But honestly i think its an average to mediocre class at best for me. The only picj i really liked was Fuaga in the first. I think they seriously out thought themselves at picks 41 and 150.
This os a draft where teally good OL talent was available at 41 and 150. Yet they chose a 4th CB, and a QB who won't see the field over the next several years, if ever!.
Both the Bucs and Falcons made major moves to get a lot better now. I dont see that same boldness or sense of urgency with the Daints. To me it feels like a 6-11 or maybe 7-11 team at best this season. Mediocrity seems to be this teams comfort zone.
3rd place in the weakest division in the NFL this season seems right to me. Just how I feel right now. Sorry.

We picked up rattler and mccindrick. ,thought we'd go for another guard too but the tackle spot got addressed, this imo was a good draft especially if spencer keeps his focus on the game and the o.c works on his mechanics/accuracy he could develop into a starter...he's got the talent, also a big run stopper in the middle along with a good tackling kb

I still stand by that I think the saints will draft a QB first round when arch manning is in the draft. They want another manning at the helm.
As a Vols fan, I can assure you that Joe Milton won't make as an NFL QB. He was AVERAGE in his fifth or sixth year DESPITE having physical traits BETTER than Cam Newton. He needs to convert to TE or a TAysom Hill role, like Tim Tebow should have done.

The only short sighted part about this pick is, if Rattler fails to beat out Haener for the backup QB job, he may be off the team by the 53 man cut down, because you probably won’t be able to get him through to the practice squad, & because of the way the Roster is stacking up, it’s going to be nearly impossible to carry 3 QB’s to the initial 53 man roster.
Why?
Unless they plan on cutting Payton Turner or Isaiah Foskey, they are going to have to carry an extra edge or two!
Unless the Saints trade Lattimore, they will be carrying an extra DB than normal.
The LB room will be full.
The OL room will most likely need as much depth as possible as well, so you can’t shorten that group.
They will probably only be able to carry 3 TEs & 5 WRs.
That means, you won’t have the spot for a 3rd QB or 4th RB.
The Saints may have drafted, what will be, another teams developmental QB.
At least it’s only a 5th Round pick wasted and isn’t more.
Maybe they can trade him or Haener, whoever doesn’t win the job, prior to the cutdown, to at least get something back, since either would most likely be claimed on waivers, if you try to get them through to the practice squad.

This guys ceiling is 10x higher than any of those guys. It’s worth a flyer 5th round pick. Crazier has happened….. Purdy/prescott and objectively you could say he’s a better athlete than both…… it’s all in the 🧠

This is one of those situations where ypu just make your new OC happy. He doesn't want a Carr style QB long. You aren't getting any players you feel comfortable starting in the 5th and we are on a rebuild anyway

Rattler is way better than Jake. If Derek Carr doesn't watch it, Rattler could steal his spot while they're all learning a new system together.

Watched a lot his games. He ain’t it😂😂😂. He didn’t lose his job just because of Caleb. He lost it because of the decisions he made then Caleb comes in and outplayed him. This team never shows the ability to “draft” a QB, so this pick ain’t surprising. Another wasted pick in my opinion. But we’ll see.
