When i visited Costa Rica 🇨🇷 in 1998 i quickly understood there's a caste system there based on race and ethnicity. In a country so small that a person can drive to from Atlantic to the Pacific coasts in the same day there are at three separate groups that have nothing to do with each other. There's the descendants of the Spanish conquistadors, the latinos and Caribbeans and then there is a large community of "gringos" which are expats and consulate personnel Americans, Britain and Europeans that hang out together. When i visited my POC was a Latina from Nicaragua living in Costa Rica. Her friends were all Latinos from different countries and the Caribbean. Although i lodged with a American/Jamaican couple i was not invited to the gringo events because of the company I kept. It just blew my mind that I an American/British citizen visiting Costa Rico for 1 week could be marginalized and be treated as a Caribbean/Latino by people just like me because of my friends. It was easy for me to identity the descendants of the Spanish as their physical apperaracne was totally different from the Latinos. I stay there during the Thanksgiving week and was excluded from the gringo Thanksgiving Dinner 🎉party. Lastly stop using Afro in reference to melanated Americans because we are the indigenous people of the Americas. My ancestry for example is Cherokee, Blackfoot, Choctaw, Scottish, Irish and Northern and Southern European. No Afrikan ancestry. That's the case for the vast majority of melanated North Americans.
I would think that Afro-Latinos would refrain from identifying as African-American, because it is a question of culture. The cultures are not the same. African-American as a designation is supposed to identify a very specific group of people. Everyone should know who it refers to. The term Black has a broader meaning. The most important difference between the two is that Black is a concept that was created by Whites and thus is looking at us from their perspective or an external perspective, While African-American is from our own perspective - our being those of us Black-Americans whose ancestors were enslaved in the United States in earlier period of enslavement. There can be exceptions of course, but this is the general rule. They see us all the same from their perspective, but we recognized our distinctions. We African-Americans cannot identify or relate to a culture prior to the one we developed in the U.S. Other Black-Americans can and so that is how they see themselves after the national identity of American that we all share as citizens. Many African-Americans are not as worldly as other Black people of the African Diaspora. Most of us have lived a very segregated life and our exposure to other cultures is been very limited. Many of us see all Black people from the English speaking Carribean as Jamaicans and see all Hispanics as Mexican. Many are not comfortable or open to people unlike themselves. Of course, many of us are accepting of others and their culture, especially the food. It surprises me that more of us not take to the music the music of the Spanish and English speaking Carribean has had a significant influence on African-American music. Jelly Roll Morton who is said to be the father of jazz, is credited as saying jazz has to have the Latin tinge. African-Americans or a significant number of us from my perspective seem insecure about our culture. They don't want to even think that other Black people have had an influence on our culture particularly the music. Hip-Hop argues over its origin. Despite the Jamaican Kool Herc being acknowledged by most as being credited as the point of creation, many seem to not like the idea that people other than African -Americans were responsible for it, played a significant role, or it having borrowed much from non-African-American sources. I wonder how they would take it if asked where did rhyming originate and what would rap music be without it? Rhyming in music is a big part of English and Spanish speaking Caribbean music. I haven’t even seen or heard talk of rhyming being a part of tradition African culture. The only element of Hip-Hop that did not already exist in some previous form may be scratching, yet Hip-Hop advocates see and promote it as being so unique. They talk as if it was the first Black music to have influenced the world. Jazz did that first, r&b and reggae did the same. Bob Marley is as widely known and loved as is Tupac. It is ironic that recently it appears there is a growing number of us who say we were native to the U.S. They say we never came from Africa - we were always here and are the indigenous people of this land. Some even say the 'Atlantic Slave Trade' never happened. My first response to hearing this was to think - well give back the African influenced music you so love and boast about all the world loving. Show me the native/indigenous influence on Black music of the U.S. Our scholars and journalist need to do better at covering the troubling trends emerging among us that is increasing the already fractured nature among us African-Americans especially. We seem to have enough for all of us of the African Diaspora. We have ADOS and FBA as new designations as if the government will pay anyone they are not legally and/or morally obligated to pay reparations, if we ever are to get them. In all honesty - much of humanity is due reparations for the historic inhumanity we have inflicted on each other as groups. African-American intellectuals today are saying "Black on Black crime is not a thing", when in the 80's they were not speaking out against us singing songs like - ‘We’re Headed For Self-destruction' and Hip- Hop had its campaign against violence. I'm certain they were right along with most of us in our attitude and stance toward the high rate of violence among us. It has gotten worse - become normalized and more heinous. Children and women have long now been the victims of this senseless violence, yet our intellectuals like Michael Eric Dyson and some Black celebrities and activist now take this inexplicable stance. I have yet to hear any mention of this in the Black media. Social media hasn't even debated it. Why is this? This is us gas-lighting ourselves, when it is ignored. It is no different than the denial of reality of Trumpism. Again, where is "Black media" on this issue? Some Afro-Latinos are engaged in this same revisionist history. I don’t know if it originated from a Latino or not, just have seen a couple of them with TH-cam channels spreading the idea of what they call the Copper-Colored-People. IMHO, the term AFRO-LATINO is redundant.
I disagree with the professor. If Latin America had segregation, so how did Latin America population became half of mixed race people?
It was forced. The government said oh slavery is over and we are going to get rid of slavery and racism by encouraging mixture. But only to lighten. “Mejorar la raza” mix but only with someone Who is lighter than you. It gives the false impression that it is colorblind. Another factor is also that Spanish and Portuguese slave masters and colonizers were way more open to sex with slaves and Africans( also natives when there were any left). And in some cases they even claimed the offspring which was not the case in the US.
Don’t get me wrong the hatred and disdain was also there but in the US WHITE PEOPLE WERE MORE STRICT WITH MIXING AND rarely claimed the offspring and they would not inherit anything. In Brazil in the 18th century there different Churches and cemetery’s for blacks and whites. In cuba black people sat in a different area deprecated from whites in busses (and trains) still in 20th Century. It was cultural and customary law.
The same way black Americans became mixed race people and they were enslaved

Most Latinos are mixed . There is no racial caste system. At best their were names for the different mixed people in the early days of Latin America , before the war of independence in Latin America.
There defiantly was one ! It has been ablistend OFFICIALLY but it is still in the mind, mentality, culture and customs of the countries. Let alone in Brazil they have so many names to call different shades of black and brown which originates in the cast system that is now abolished

@@eunicehen4959 I doubt it. In Latin America anyone can marry anyone for like 100 years. Race mixing was promoted in Latin America. And discouraged in the USA .

Just in other words???!!! 🤨 in the us English descendant white people were more hesitant to mix but it does not mean that there was no segregation. I know that for a fact.
Sure, everybody in every country in Latin America is treated equal.
Those governments should of create conditions for the African populations living in those countries for them to return to Africa, which is a continent that offers plenty of economic opportunities. Besides, Europeans don't actually need the Blacks anymore since the end of slavery, their presence is but a nuisance in Latin America nowadays , besides they don't wish to be part of those nation's cultural and political lives.
I believe this would be the best solution to this problem.

The best solution is for you and those who think like you to stop practicing your racism. We do not have to return anywhere, you return to where you were imported from. We rightfully belong in these countries because we did not ask to come there and our heritage was stolen when we got there, these ARE our countries of origin for all intent and purpose, perhaps you should consider returning to your country of origin.
