    nimh cells are awesome because, if you charge them right, they don't need a BMS at all. it could have made EV's way more affordable by now if the technology hasn't been bought and shelved by petroleum companies.

      You can still buy them if you want, but they just aren't as good. For them to deliver the same power you would need at least double the batteries that are in cars today.

    wear electrical hand protection when doing this as battery sparks can disintergrate volt metre probe tips so imagine what it could do to finger bones so take no chances as mistakes can happen . can also wrap your finger tips in polyimide kaptone tape to insulate against shocks

    so if you were to build your own NiMh battery what cell would you use

    can you please help me off that information about 56 volts universal charger, i'm make 150 volts battery pack with escape sticks (for my vw bug with electric dc motor) but i need find the way to charge
    Thanks in advance

    Meu amigo meu patineti esta com a bateria carregada porem quando quero liga lo não l iga só funcina com o carregador ligado ao patineti desconfio que seja o BMS da bateria porque é ele que faz a transição da bateria para a parte eletronica ok

    These cells have a specific power of only 600w/kg and specific energy of 43wh/kg
    So your volumetric power density of the pack is several times lower than using prismatic cells

      On the other hand, they cost him nothing.

    Any chance you can share some info on how you got the NiMH batteries? You said something about a junk yard but did you pull them out yourself? If so, where is the DIY on that? Surely that could go really wrong. Is it now common place to find hybrids and electric cars in junk yards?
    Thanks for your time.

      +Nathaniel, I got an entire Ford Escape Hybrid Battery pack from a junkyard. I took it apart to get the cells. You can read the blog entries, including videos, at: 300mpg.org/2014/07/21/auto-parts-road-trip/ and 300mpg.org/2014/10/13/deconstructing-a-ford-escape-hybrid-battery-pack-for-the-motorcycle/
      I originally intended to use those NiMH cells to replace the aging lead cells in my Kawasaki electric motorcycle. Right about that time, I got a REALLY good deal on the Vectrix and then a LEAF battery pack, so I ended up working on that instead. Hybrids are common enough in junkyards, but there aren't too many electric cars, yet. There are a number of places now selling Volt batteries and Leaf batteries. A friend of mine is selling A123 cells right now. If you are interested: www.schultzengineering.us

    May be a good idea to mention to any DIYers, that 60 volts DC at high amperage needs to be handled very carefully.. If two wires or contacts are allow to short out the battery, they will weld themselves together. (That's why a fuse is a good idea).
    Plus, 60 VDC might not seem like a very high voltage, but it's high enough to kill you, if the current passes thru your chest. It can stop your heart.
    In some devices, the - minus side is connected to the metal chassis. So, if your left hand was on the metal chassis and you put your right hand on the + Plus side of the 60VDC battery or cable etc.. That could be very dangerous.

      +Richard Lee,
      As always, safety first. In general, wear safety glasses and use insulated tools. For a removable battery pack, a fuse built right in to the battery pack is a good idea. On children's PowerWheels toy cars, they have a fuse built right in the 12V battery. That wouldn't be a bad idea for this either.

      Just need to made sure the fuse holder is easy to get at.. And of course the fuse is rated about 25% above the expected current flow.
      Be good to have a spare in the bike's tool kit.

    Great video! Is NiMH cheaper than lithium in terms of power and usage life and cost? Thanks

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Historically, NiMH was cheaper than lithium, and it's what was used in all the hybrid cars. Lithium has light weight and long life cycles. In this case, I'm playing around with NiMH batteries, because I already have them, salvaged from a Ford Escape Hybrid. For any new hobbyist project now, nearly everyone uses some form of lithium. There's still plenty of good reasons to use NiMH and even Lead batteries, (got a great price, its for a stationary battery, etc,) but not usually for vehicle projects.

    Whats up I have an ETWOW Booster 2. Right now its rated at 33v 6.5 ah. I saw a battery listed on the net that's 36v 8.8 ah I think it was. It got me thinking would it be beneficial to build a better quality battery at 36v?

    • @Poepad
      @Poepad 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The scooter needs 72 volts, so (2) 36v would work.

    dude, how could I use lipo batteries in a razor mx650 electric motorcycle? I want to convert my kids electric motorcycle from lead acid to lipo

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Matthew Sherman, That's a little beyond the scale of this video or being quickly answered in a single comment. However, in general, you connect batteries in series to get to the voltage needed for your project, and connect batteries in parallel to get to the AH capacity that you want. The "Endless Sphere" forums are a great resource for learning about building battery packs. endless-sphere.com/forums/

    It won't run the scooter more than 10 min
    Depending on the bms used in the scooter
    The panasonic cylindrical cells are designed where most of their IR is up above 1.4v so they work best from a 80% soc down to 50% DOD
    So if your pulling 15a most of the usable watts will dissipate within the first few minutes

    • @Poepad
      @Poepad 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BMS is in the battery pack, not on the scooter
