  • Today we will look at two popular distros, both based on Ubuntu. PopOS was designed by System76 for their computers and features a ton of behind the scenes modifications for stability. Linux Mint is the go-to choice for new Linux users because of the stability and simplicity.

    I'm using Linux Mint primarily because I'm not looking to distro hop coming from Windows 7, I mean don't get me wrong, I distro hopped a little bit early on, but I quickly settled on Mint because I just want a computer that works as a computer and not a distro hopping machine. At the end of the day, we all know (Or should know) distros don't really matter, it's how good you are at configuring your distro of Linux to do the same tasks any other distro can do. For me, Mint is the most familiar, so I use mint.

Linux is mainly used in older systems where 4k is barely an afterthought so it's rare that 4k is put in mind for the fractional scaling options. If you install a package to change the DE it flushes out the issue. I noticed that DE's such as gnome in particular is quite bad at handling fractional scaling and that the more windows-like DEs like cinnamon and kde tend to be better at it. It's just a minor flaw that's fixed pretty easily when you understand your way around the issue.

    Hello. I like trying GNU/Linux distros. To be honest I've never heard of POP until I watched this video, then I tried this myself. But I don't like to use virtual machine because it will not recognize my full hardware and I like to to test distros installing it besides my main distros (Debian and Mint LMDE); actually I have some partitions only to test distros.
    Well, I got dissapointed about POP for two reasons:
    1 - I downloaded NVIDIA version because I have Nvidia GPU. When system booted, it got a ugly screen and no NVIDIA graphics driver were installed;
    2 - It doesn't install Grub. So I had to lose some time fixing the grub.
    I probably could fix those problems but, when we install a OS we expect it to work fully. Didin't work for me.

    • @ivangneiding
      @ivangneiding 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe I didn't notice about installing asking me about grub (probably because it loaded bad resolution even on installer).
      About NVIDIA driver, probably because I have an old card. I think it tried to install the latest driver but not the recommended for the current card, I'm not sure. Acttualy I had some problems trying to install latest driver in other distros too; I have to install legacy one.
      Developers could add some way to detect and install driver properly and at the end of the installation, in the first boot of the system ask the user if the resolution is ok. If its not system ask user to install some driver in a list (in case user maybe know which one works fine with his graphic card), or install opensource instead (I never had problems with opensource ones). It would prevent problems like this one I had. But it's just my though.

    My ONLY issue with POP OS is the mainly vanilla Gnome desktop. I would have zero issues if they set their Gnome desktop up to work more easily like Ubuntu does, or even better if they included the Desktop Layout Switcher that you can now get on Manjaro Gnome. I honestly don't think 'vanilla' Gnome is a good option for people new to Linux and/or people who are more 'novice level' computer users. Clearly an experienced Linux user and/or someone used to how vanilla Gnome works would love POP OS because it is a really good set up. But being 'old' and an 'old point and click mouse' person, I would much rather use a desktop like Cinnamon, Deepin, or Budgie. And yeah, I know you can install other desktops onto POP, I just don't think you should have to do that to get a set up that is more useful to the 'average' user. Just my opinion though :) Thanks, Tom, for your comparison and insights.

I may switch to it because I like the flexibility of running the point releases between LTS's. I just never really liked Ubuntu proper as much as Mint.

    If you have a laptop with an Optimus chip (Intel iGPU and nVidia dGPU) I'd go Pop OS since their nVidia ISO comes not only with the latest nVidia stable driver preinstalled but also a working power manager to switch GPUs which is something no other distro has out of the box and isn't very reliable on other distros if you install a solution like Bumblebee or Optimus Manager after installing the distro. You can get these solutions to work but Pop OS has it working out of the box with no manual intervention needed by the user. It's just less hassle.
    For general purpose computing it's a toss up. Both distros are well made, stable and give you access to a similarly large repo of software in their respective official repositories. Mint comes with a great tool for installing and enabling different versions of the kernel, which is handy for anyone with a specific need such as better support for newer hardware which isn't always the case if one sticks only to the long term support kernel. On Pop OS you can install a similar tool but Mint has it out of the box, so most users on Pop OS will rely almost exclusively on Ubuntu's HWE stack for backported patches to the lts kernel.

      I found that Gnome in Pop OS affected CSGO, which is a cpu-bound game very badly. It was to the point of being unplayable, due to constant 3-second stutters that are unacceptable in a competitive game.
      The frame rate was normal, well above 300 fps, but it was choppy at the same time. Now the difference when I installed XFCE was night and day, without exaggeration, either with the xfwm4 compositor on or off.
      So in the end I decided to switch to Mint, since it has a native XFCE version, because you still have some traces of Gnome in Pop even after selecting XFCE.
      I did like Gnome in Pop OS though, especially in the 20.1 version, considering how fast it was. But the performance hit in some games and also on Blender was something I couldn't ignore.

    Nvidia 18.04 LTS has horrible default video drivers. I would use the 19 versions and 20.04 instead.

    Linux promoters should always sell Linux Mint to regular computer users who are whining about windows and getting curious. All distros should at least unite around this one point! Sell Mint to newbies - forever and always. It eliminates the confusion and uncertainty for newcomers if they see EVERYONE saying Mint. It unites the Linux world around the one gateway drug. If you're talking to a hacker I would still say convert them to Linux Mint, and then they'll go play with other bleeding edge distros from there. After all, they're hackers. They can't help themselves. Downloading and customising their own new distro thang with their cheeto stained fingers in their grandma's basement is living their BEST LIFE! But for the rest of us, we actually don't want bleeding edge. We want reliability. We want something that works with minimal fuss and tinkering. Mint seems to have all the *good* stuff about Apple without the bad - it has safety, reliability, usability and beauty of Apple - but without the Apple arrogance and control. The Mint developers listen to the community and of course Mint is Linux so you can totally hack it if you want to.

    If Tim Heidecker had a cousin that listened to Mac Demarco non-stop, he would look exactly like you. Not an insult, btw.

    What is the lightest mint for ram useage could you test?

    • @atpray
      @atpray 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      xfce, It uses about 30-35 % in idle of ram on an old 1gb Ram , 1.8 gHz processor.
      I tried antix for even more lightweight linux, but didn't like the interface and navigation at all.

    I must say that Linux is far more fun to play with in theming, where Microsoft has become boring and dull and bland
    It seems that windows is and cant seem to get there act together without breaking something and I'm hearing more and more problems that are popping up with there latest update. Linux on the other hand just works and the whole team deserves a huge thank you.

      That's odd. I struggled to install mint and kubuntu. Ubuntu worked well but the battery was down a lot quicker than on windows.
      With windows, i never had an issue even when updating to windows 11.

    Why you guys don't like snap support?

    • @riseabove3082
      @riseabove3082 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. Snap was created by Canonical (Ubuntu) which equals proprietary software which equals too much like Microsoft tactics. 2. Snaps are bigger than App Images since it doesn't share any of the libraries and requires the same libraries to be re-installed for each Snap app. 3. Snaps are slow to open on first start. 4. Snaps don't adhere to DE themes (They've been working on fixing this). 5. Snaps use more memory and drive space 6. Ubuntu is pushing Snaps over App images by defaulting to installing a Snap app over an app image via their Software Center and now in APT in CLI mode.
      This is giving too much control to one company that is pushing their own agenda real hard to developers, the community, and other smaller distros out there. This is a complete Microsoft type tactic that should bother any one if not cause some concern.
      Just my two cents!

      @@riseabove3082 I'm a Windows user too, using dual boot right now. I'm slowly switching to linux, because as a junior developer I understand companies interest in linux based systems and desktop usages.
      It doesn't feel like Windows strategy, it feels much more like Android one.
      I don't think it is a trap to make people fall into non-free software.
      I think the main point of the technology is not efficiency, but instead developing better user experiences for newcomers.
      I suppose the main point of what you said is that you will have same packages several times in different "containers", to name it. So you lose control, and linux guys don't like losing control.... But the average people don't mind about that, they want their apps working and little more.
      When I read you, I feel you have some hate to canonical (and you are not the first person that i hear/read), and I know that Canonical have made some non orthodox decisions (based on linux philosophies), but I don't know if Canonical deserves that much hate for that. Somehow, if someone decided randomly to try linux, Canonical has a big piece of participation in that fact.
