I feel for his old roommates. Knowing that you could have stopped him from doing something stupid and being unable to know if he found somewhere safe for 30 hours is unimaginable amounts of stress. And then you find out he was literally just chilling at the bar the entire time? I would have straight up slugged him for that if I was his college roommate in the 1600s when all we had were the first beepers in existence.

Now, combine the two. Hurricane Ophelia, I was stationed aboard Camp Lejeune, NC. We got locked down, but not before the smarter guys had already DEEPLY invested in beer, snacks, and SHENANIGANS.
I contributed a large box of chemlights, someone else had a slingshot, and we were shooting them across the quad at other rooms. And that was just to open things up.

To be fair, though, it is a valid assumption.
I assume it was probably 20+ years ago and the only hurricane I remember being really bad was George. Though it barely touched Florida, but it did hit Louisiana. So my guess is that he's from around there.

Related: Just got power back yesterday after Ian hit us, so about five days exactly. The last time we lost power like that was during Irma
@@vohloo9797 The eye went over him so it had to be lower than cat 4. If it was Katrina he'd have been dead since the bar would have been under 12 feet of sludge. Had to be one of the less destructive storms. Irma probably. Could have been Sandy. That one went up the east coast.
@@thegrim418 Yeah category 4 and up is pretty much a hellscape of collateral damage and destruction. Mostly went with those in that time frame because I thought he was much older, but I'm guessing he and chat are memeing that aspect of his age for goofs and gaffes lol

Between this and his story about being literally stabbed in college, I have no idea how he survived.
I have a similar story but tornadoes. So being from the Midwest, you get to know when it's _actually_ dangerous vs just bad weather. Well one summer my company was holding their user conference and we had people from our global offices in. Meaning people from the UK were in our office when a BIG storm system hit Chicago. So there we are, in the tallest building in Chicago, which is actively swaying in the wind, and the building security comes on that everyone is to evacuate to the center of the building as a tornado is coming. The UK people are just terrified bc they don't get this type of fun, where as everyone born here grabbed the hidden bottles of "desk whiskey" we all kept and went and sat by the windows to watch the storm come in. Hell of a wall cloud and heavy rain but you could see by the rotation we weren't getting a tornado in downtown. We just had fun, day drinking, and watching the storm from the top of the building.
funnily enough most skyscrapers actually bend and move with the wind.. it's usually too subtle to notice or they put a huge special device that helps with the vibrations and tremors on higher floors.. (known as a tuned mass damper or TMD.)
Most skyscrapers can actually over 10 inches or more to the side depending on how tall it is. (the higher the more it bends.)
Also if you can actually feel the building moving that is a big sign of trouble.. But not much you can do about it depending on the construction and maintenance of the building.. But a building swaying will wear it down more and more over time, before it will eventually collapse on itself. And even if proper maintenance is maintained, the swaying will actually wear out the foundation pillars deep underground. which is again why they have TMDs and really good designs.
The only question is when they will fall. But the swaying will break the building quicker no doubt abou that..
I'm glad though that you know what to do in these situations and can remain calm. although I do wonder what part of the UK those people were from, cause anywhere on the British Isles or mainland has heavy rain storms and massive amounts of wind..
So they either lived or work somewhere very deep inland. (which is expensive land, and not suitable for large businesses or most mass productions.) Or some other UK country I'm forgetting.

Yeah, or one of the surround states (but I also think its florida). I'm guessing its one of the hurricanes that hit Florida between 2004 and 2008 (since they were one of the few ones notable enough to actually hit landfall and to have an for the eye of the storm last long enough for him to take a walk to the local bar...). Anything after that, and well, he probably wouldn't be much of a boomer.
Did he give any indication of having to deal with Hurricane Ian? He might not be in Florida anymore if that isn't the case.

i live in a tropical country, and getting stuck at a friend's place during a typhoon while it was supposed to just be a night of drinking were some of the most memorable times in my life. Power's out, wind howling and rain beating down the roof, all that, and i'm stuck there hoping we don't run out of alcohol. College years are definitely stupid times for decision making, risking life and limb for a drop of beer every fucking time.

my wife went for a walk during hurricane. it waas a weak one.
"I could not use my umbrella" was her only complaint. We knew it was a hurricane after relatives called if we were ok, as we were visiting friends in germany and they thought we might die, lol. we found out that the town had bunch of trees kaputt the next day, streets blocked. Like several hundred meters from where we were there was destruction. our zone: literally walk in the park.

Kinda reminds me of when we had a massive thunderstorm blow over my workplace, and we had to stop because there was probably going to be a tornado. Most of the guys hunkered down in the bathrooms in the center of the big warehouse space where we worked, but I wanted to see the tornado so I went near-ish to the big open doors. As near as I could get without getting too wet.
That job really sucked, and I think I was sorta hoping the tornado would kill me...
