Every 6 months a different cruise would start, so 2 squadrons would leave and be attachedto the ship as it went Wes-Pac. The crowd of women at the club(s), mostly the EM Club on base would change with amazingly similar timing of the squadrons that were leaving and those coming back from deployment... as Mickey Spillane would say, "Its a mystery to me"....

I never went on a (2-4 month) deployment, and came back, and did NOT hear of a man coming home to an empty house/apartment, wife having left them. Its never the dramatic confrontation like in the video. They just leave. Being Air Force, we deploy with more females the other branches. Fun Facts:
The main male character is Rick Schroeder, who was a child actor. He directed this video.
The little girl at the end is Schroeder’s daughter, Cambrie Schroeder.
Jon Randall, the song’s writer, was going through a time where he was divorcing from Lorrie Morgan (previously married to Keith Whitley and Sammy Kershaw), had lost a song writing contract and a record deal. He was struggling with alcoholism and pursuing sexual desires. During a conversation with his manager, the manager told him, “Sometimes you have to put the bottle to your head and pull the trigger.” This song was born from that line.

I’ll probably add more comment as the video goes farther into the song. But when you start by saying that you like these military videos, you’ve already won me over. I served from 1970 to 1975. When I came home, as I walked through the airport, I was spit on and called a baby killer. I never killed a baby. I served my country, and thought I should be be allowed to be proud of it. Thank you for offering me (at least, I hope you are) some dignity. I think I am right, because I’ve watched many of your previous posts. I’m a 70 year old white guy, that loves what you do. I grew up on country music, in fact When You Say Nothing at All by Alison Krauss was the first country song I'd ever heard. I remember when I was little my mother used to sing it to me often. But Whiskey Lullaby has always, ALWAYS, been my favorite country song of all time. Despite its sad and painful story its such a beautiful song and the duet between Alison and Brad was perfect. They harmonize extremely well together. One thing I have always loved about true old country music that most don't is the fact it tells stories that resonate very strongly with the listener. It almost literally tugs at the heart strings.

Being a military wife isn't for everyone. I was also military, so i understood "how it works" when my husband had to go for 2 weeks, or 6 months just to the field. The biggest test ( in my opinion ) is actual deployment. If you can make it through that you can make it through anything. My husband went and yes I was one of those praying two officers didn't visit or that the phone didn't ring. I barely left my house or socialized because I was afraid I would miss a phone call on the rare occasion he was able to. Out of three years stationed in Germany, I saw him a total of 6 months. When he finally came home he was covered in 8 months worth of mud and sand, but I almost knocked him over when I rushed him. That was when we were only 2 years in and we have been married 25 years. I never once remotely thought of seeing anyone else, but I have seen plenty of wives doing that. The wife of one of his closest friends actually told him she'd rather have had the SGLI ( life insurance) , so yea there are some pretty soul -less women out there. As I said, I think the fact that I also served, so I knew how the job works helped.

As a man who's been cheated on, it's a devastating blow that leaves very heavy scars. When a man truly loves a woman, it is a very deep and profound love. It can takes years to heal from the breaking of that bond, if it ever happens.
Another great song about a man's love for a woman is "He Stopped Loving Her Today", by George Jones.
By the way, Krauss is pronounced like Krouse, rhymes with house.
