I was listening to a podcast with an ex F-14 pilot and an ex-F-14 RIO.
The pilot mentioned that he and his RIO had been able to get the F-14 with a LANTIRN pod and 4 GBU's up to Mach 2+ because they wanted to see if they could get 1,000mph on the ground speed indicator.

As a little update, Heatblur have added the basic LANTIRN Section to the manual now, the only significant change from the pre-release version is the LANTIRN warm up time is now 8 mins, rather than the 5 i experienced in this build.

FYI make sure to bind "LANTIRN MODE A/G" and toggle it once the pod is up otherwise you will not be able to designate with trigger full action. It is mentioned in the video only briefly and easy to miss and it wont work without this step!

Jester can use it now and he's pretty good at it all things considered. Being able to have him slave to a F10 Map mark point is a friggin lifesaver.

To get the more realistic looking black/white lantirn display overlay, be sure to map the VIDEO EXPORT T..... in your keybindings. It's AWESOME.
I'm not sure about realistic, per say, the TID is a greenscale display, so it will show the raw black and white footage as green, but it's a cool little export for video making.
Excellent work! I have created a few missions in editor to learn LANTIRN myself, but I also learnt some useful tricks from you. After operating modern pods with F-16 and F/A-18, it's nice to familiarize with some older equipment.

Yeah they should have waited to launch the MiG. Few bought it because tomcat and it was also rushed and shipped with a lousy FM. Launching it at the end of April fully complete would have been a much smarter move.

Tipical Razbam idiocity. They should concentrate all their efforts on fixing the Harrier and the Mirage instead of releasing new stuff. I stopped flying the harrier a year ago, yesterday i returned to check it out again and it has the same bugs or its even buggier now... I really regret buying anything from razbam at this point.

The tutorial is very good and exactly to the point.So as i see it's much of a complicated work to use lantirn and LGBs..So i'll keep this feature for F16 and F18,and use only conventional bombing with F14.

Excellent tutorial as always Redkite. I am having an issue once I drop my first GBU and get a hit I cannot follow up with second GBU? Right before the Pickel, nothing happens? My HUD does say "ORD" and "L" is flashing not sure what the issue is all racks have been selected in the weapons panel too. Any suggestions?

I wonder how they managed to keep such a high resolution textures in whole cockpit. As a vfx guy, I know how much of megapixels it requires to cover space with such details. It is 32k or more of textures ready to be zoomed in. Good old DX9 still handles it, unbelievable.

Id been considering using an old x-55 as the lantirn stick, but couldn't make room to mount it on my right. And it doesnt really work on the left, being a right handed stick :( i use the EAC switch on the throttle to select hcu / lantirn
me and a friend have been having trouble with dropping bombs. Where exactly for the rio is the weapons release?

Pilot releases bombs/rockets with the big red switch on the top of the stick. Rio can only launch missiles with the push button on the left side of his instrument panel.

can you please explain what the other options do in your tutorials. for instance with aligning the TGP, what does the other mode do? Stuff like that is useful to know
They have nothing to do with the TGP, so they're not mentioned. It's for the Navigation system, and whilst the TGP uses the INS for waypoint slaving/co-ordinates, that would be better talked about on a video about navigation or startup.

Can't blame them i'd go cross eyed too if i had to type out LANTIRN so many times in the lua file :') I expect it's fixed in the release version.
Instructions for the Black/White Lantirn mode are here....
Go to keybindings options. Type OPTION in the search field. You will see only 2 options. The 2nd one has acronym of V.E.T. "Video Export T......."
Set a Keybinding then use it the next time you're sitting in the RIO seat.
Set the same Keybinding for pilot if you want to see it while flying.
What is the squiggly line on the screen that looks like someone keyed the screen? I've seen this on multiple LANTERN displays.
I think I explained it in the video, it's the masking line, if the little white square indicating the direction the pod's looking crosses that line it'll be masked by either the jet's body or the pod's own mount. So you can take action to avoid masking before it happens.

How do u hide the Lantirn stick on the Rio?
What is the curved, almost hand drawn looking, line that comes down the display? Been flying since BMS in the F-16 and I’ve owned the F-14 in DCS since release, but I’ve never understood what that is. Honestly have very few hours in the F-14 in comparison to the to the F-16, A-10C, F-18.
It's a masking line, if the directional pointer crosses that line it'l be masked by the aircraft (or pod's) body, losing track.
This was great... Too bad we still don't have realistic IR camera effects... UGH ED
Atleast we finally have a TGP that has overgain effects when bright hot explosions happen...the static, clean image of the Litening (even if it was accurate) always looked somewhat fake to me, as most of the FLIR footage we can access is either from ODS or otherwise bad quality.
But yes, cannot wait for realistic FLIR effects...people will rage so hard that ground targets with their engines off don't appear as bright spots anymore, anything that makes anything "hard" in DCS seems to get flak somehow, the HUD refresh of the F-14 for example, I bet there will be people asking for a resolution upgrade "option" for this Lantirn etc...in effect they want a 2010 era avionics suite in a 1990s era airframe, to which I would recommend BMS, as most flyable aircraft in BMS are just reskins of the F-16 XD
I look forward to the challenge, also helps reduce the IR mav spam, gives a good reason to take laser weapons as i'd covered in a video sometime back, showing Arma 3's IR render :)

Look in the cheats section for pilot / rio controls, you have to bind it.

when i designate the target i get the horizontal and vertical steering cue for the pilot, but no thick line (drop cue line ) on the r/h verical line, that travels down????

WPN TYPE needs to be GBU...got it
We figured this out. You have to select the type of bomb being dropped (I.e. GBU on a small dark rotary knob next to the armament panel in the RIO seat). TREL will then appear.
Thanks for this video! We can get everything to work except the time to release doesn't show. I can pin everything in the lantirn and lase, but no time to release Any suggestions?

@@RedKiteRender yes, gbu-12 pylon 3-6 (one at a time used). We must be missing one simple detail somewhere.
We have been practicing with a hotstart, will try today with a cold start and see if that makes a difference

Tomcat is pretty cool, and it's a good dumb bomb bus. But it can only carry 4 GBU 1 sparrow and 2 sidewinders in strike configuration. For percision strike F/A 18 all the way. Can carry the same or more GBUs plus HARMs and Mavericks that the F-14 can't use.
Very true, but with lower range and much slower there are good reasons to use the tomcat. If you want dumb bombs on the other hand the F-14 can carry a ton of mk82s
@@RedKiteRender i don't know about "much" slower it's not a A-10 and generally i don't fly full burner to targets in either plane. F/A 18 can also defend itself better in strike configuration IMO. Tomcat can get in and out fast though and drop 18 mk 82s or carry that GBU 24 so I agree it has it's purpose
It's less about cruise speed, more about the acceleration and ability to protect itself, a tomcat can get to high altitude quickly, can run away from threats and choose whether or not to fight. The hornet generally doesn't have those luxuries if you load her up as a bomb truck.
Lantrin is on. Laser armed but I cannot get point or area track mode and on ground stabilize. Master arm is on too

Any max altitude where you still can lase with the pod?
according to Spudknocker you can't exceed 25,000 feet because certain electronics within the early LANTIRN pod's will actually catch fire in low pressure environments :/ Don't know if that's actually modelled though.

Are you in A2A mode? You need to be in A2G mode. Make sure the laser is armed too.
So technically single player can't use it at the minute?

You can use it but the workload is high and a little unwieldy on your own
Jump into back seat, do it yourself, designate target, jump back to pilot seat...keep in mind the AI flying the plane at that point is very rudimentary...

Masking limits of the Lantirn, if the square heading icon passes the limit it'l be masked by the housing/airplane
Just a quick question: why is it green and not white-black-grey? is it the RIO monitor that only displays in green and black? perhaps this explains why you can see video footage from a targeting pod of this era in white-grey-black on contemporary monitors, but that's not how the pilot saw it? A follow-up would be: why did heatblur release video of it coloured in white-grey-black in a dev diary, rather than green-black as is shown here?
Because cockpit instrument recorders, Both HUD camera and displays recorders, have until recently been recorded in monochrome black and white. The majority of cockpit displays up until the 1990's have all been monochrome green, they can literally only display shades of green, however the recording devices used to store and re-watch those displays for debrief purposes have all been monochrome white (black and white) which records the green image as a black and white one. It's the same reason why any HUD footage of a tomcat or 1990's F-16 is in black and white where the HUD appears white even though it is actually green. So the pilot's/RIO's have always seen it as green, but when recorded and reviewed in debrief the image has always been turned black and white due to the nature of the devices on-board to record the instruments, hence why the only footage you'll ever see of LANTIRN employment in real life will also be in black and white (unless recorded by a camera actually inside the cockpit). Heatblur have implemented the black/white shift onto the image export so that it is more realistic as to what you would have actually seen, had you enabled the recorder and re-watched the LANTIRN footage, like in other online examples.
Aircraft like the A-10C (Circa 2007) have much more modern displays and are able to show the full colour spectrum, hence the TGP display in the A-10C is in White hot, as a preference thing I guess (it really makes no difference to the actual capability to see stuff on the pod).
@@reillybrangan2182 thanks for the explanation! A weird practice, wouldn't you think? If monochrome black-white is easier to use in distinguishing between objects due to contrast you'd think displays would be in that colour (which I guess they did change), or even to show during the debrief within the same monochromatic nature of the original sensor exposure the pilot/RIO experienced. Once again thanks for the clarification.

@@LymarkW The reasoning for this is that aircraft engineers at the time (1970's) only had access monochrome display technology, therefore when designing the century series aircraft that all had to use those displays for HUD projection and instrument displays (F-14, F-15, F-16 and eventually F/A-18) they had to chose one colour. Green was (and always will be) the obvious choice, this is because the human eye is heavily naturally biased towards green colour reception: The green/yellow wavelength band of light stimulates both the eye's L and M cone cells (light receptors) equally strongly, which represents two thirds of you're entire colour perception capacity, other colours such as red's and blues only stimulate one type of cone cell each (L, M or S) and subsequently you are only seeing those colours with 33% of your visual reception capacity, whereas green is stimulating 66% of your entire visual reception capacity. This makes a green light emission of equivalent strength to other colours about twice as easy to distinguish over the rest. This is why even with modern full colour display technology, critical visual elements such as the HUD remain green. This is also the reason why cockpit night lighting for a lot of fighters (Soviet and Western) is red, because when looking at red light, you are only exposing (losing night vision) 1 third of your receptors, meaning that even when looking at somewhat bright red light you should still have around 2 thirds of your natural night vision adjustment maintained.
In addition to this, when the century series fighters were designed targeting pods as a concept were hardly even a thought for fighter type aircraft, therefore no considerations were really made for them. Even up until the Gulf War (1991) the vast majority of fighters did not have and could not employ self lasing targeting pods. The only aircraft that really had that capability in the Gulf war were the F-15E, A-6E, F-117 and the F-111F, the F/A-18C's and F-16's that conducted the vast majority of the ground attack work in desert storm had yet to integrate targeting pod's until the mid-late 1990s and were still relying almost entirely on A/G Radar for targeting and CCIP/CCRP dumb bomb attacks.

And why would they use red as night lights if green is, again, a better choice? I've never realized what I'm staring at in everyday life have had such a complicated science and history behind it! :D

The direct b&w LANTIRN view? Yeah that was recorded in game, there's a control under 'cheats' that toggles it.

You need to press the trigger down full action to designate a point, otherwise it's not there, as mentioned in the video. then pilot follows the cues. If you can't designate a point, make sure your laser is turned on and you're in A2G mode on the lantirn.
I wonder if it has the 8nm yardstick bug as well since HB has their own implementation :)
The Attack Mode Dial needs to be in the CMPTR PLT position not MAN. It took me 3 days to figure that out.
No, no it doesn't, You can use the PLT mode if you like, however it clutters the hud with symbology for what you'l recognise as CCIP, which won't be in use by the pilot.
Any bomb mode that allows the pilot to drop a bomb on demand manually is all you need. Since we're using the LANTIRN as reference, Manual mode is the go-to option, as the LANTIRN is not linked into the Pilot or computer release modes.
You must of made a different mistake, as either mode works, just that manual is the preferred method.
@@RedKiteRender I'm probably wrong no doubt but for the life of me I can not figure out what I'm doing wrong as a RIO to not get release in MAN. I've watched this video several times and just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Did you switch off the jester ai? He might well of been changing things?

HB Sim -> F-14A&B -> Bugs and Problems -> Can't drop LGBs in MAN Attack Mode but can in CMPTR PLT
What gbu are you using? Id run into an issue once where the 16? Wouldnt drop, is it possible certain gbu's wont release in manual? Also worth checking you've got the weapon selector on the pilot stick to off.
I've been having a lot of problem with getting the bombs to track. I think I have the laser code wrong. I only half ass watched this video, so I need to check the knee board.

A-A mode is nearly useless and cannot slave to the radar. Use TCS instead. Only time I've found a use for A-A mode is when you're at a tanker and want to goof around.

Jester cannot operate the Lantirn pod, you can switch to the rio sea in singleplayer and do it manually, otherwise you'l need a friend in the rio seat.

Yep, any other aircraft that can carry laser guided weapons, even an f-5 if you can talk him onto target.

Where is the slider located?
Left side of the stick, out of shot, i wasn't certain on the thumb switch's function either that changes the master mode forwards or backwards, or you can use the toggle button like i do, to bind it to one control
Folllowing the tutorial exactly, my bombs never release, then the gun kicks in, everything is correct, no binding etc
Why are you pulling the trigger? you need the weapons release button.

@@-WW-VELCRO That's a strange one, You can try putting the AG Gun selector from Mixed to OFF in the rio pit, should at least prevent the gun firing.
From a former F-14 RIO, this is way cool and spot on, except the TID (i.e., the "fishbowl" display) was not capable of displaying LANTIRN video. The LANTIRN could only be displayed on the rectangular PTIDs that came into service in the late 1990s.
Thanks! My understanding is Heatblur (the developers) believe it could be done on specially modified B models, by feeding the LANTIRN signal via the TCS input to the TID.
They've done their best to accurately re-produce the Tomcat in this sim, and talked with pilots/rios on matters. Of course it could also be a small concession to give us the extra functionality, I'd have to ask them.
@@RedKiteRender That could be true. Either way, this is an incredible simulation--it takes me back to 1999! I never saw a LANTIRN jet with a TID (only with a PTID), but maybe there was one? My squadron flew As, so I didn't have much exposure to Bs. You can see some F-14 cockpit vids on my channel--there may be a few glimpses of the PTID in there. And thanks for this vid! Wish I had this in the RAG!!!!

How do you make the screen grayscale as in 22:32?
Look in the cheats section for pilot / rio controls, you have to bind it.
RedKite I cant seem to find it in the cheat section. Do you remember what the action is called? The only listing in the cheats section is “Active pause” and “Auto start”
Cheats specific to the pilot / rio of the tomcat, not general 'Display export' or something along those lines
Dunno if you ever got this figured out, but the command is "Video Export Toggle" and is under the "Other" category since the RIO seat does not have a "Cheat" category for commands! :)
One thing I've not figured out though, is if it automatically exports this video, or if you have to manually record it... No matter either way, just interesting is all.

Damn, it's a shame you can't do this in singleplayer. All I want is to do laser guided bombing with the aid of a tgp from a fighter.
I mean you can, its not really that hard. Simply acquire your target in RIO on the way in (assuming you have a way point in general target AO), switch-on Auto-lase and do the rest from the front seat.
Ive gotten it to work in singleplayer but its a handful, and iceman can be a little unpredicable sometimes.
Just get a friend...

:( You can download and play dcs 1.5 still but of course you'l be limited to the modules that were available with.
It sucks I’m 13 and I spent 200 dollars of my hard earned money on DCS just to get on one day for it no to work. I just need to work more until I get enough for a new computer I guess. For now I have these cool videos to watch I guess. Also I made a mistake on getting the F18 and not waiting for the F14 rip
When you are on a tight budget buying laptops for gaming just don't make good investments. Once they are obsolete there is very little that can be upgraded. I recommend either buying or building a gaming desktop instead. You can get a much more capable desktop than a laptop for the same money or less. Plus just about every component on a desktop is upgradable. You can choose to build a desktop using all new components or used or a mix of used and new. What is your current budget?
Here is just two examples of many out there of building a cheap $500-$600 gaming PC with new parts.

I find myself conflicted with this module. I'm sure Jester will be fine and I have nothing against Heatblur, but AI has been one of the biggest challenges in video games since it's inception so I can't imagine it breaking any ground over what larger studios have accomplished. Based on everything I've seen it works great, but most of what I've seen has been tutorials or planned out missions. I want to see how Jester handles stressful situations, for example when the dynamic campaign is released, where new variables are thrown at it during inconvenient times. Or how easy is it to control Jester in those same stressful environments, that scroll wheel works fine when you have time to plan but what happens when you notice a MiG on your ass in the middle of a bombing run and you need to throw fast commands at Jester and need just as fast responses/reactions from him... I guess I'm cautiously optimistic about it, if I had the time for online I'd love to be a RIO in a squadron but sadly I do not :(
The jester menu is a little clunky and slow to work with at first, as you start to remember it you can get orders done quickly. I switched to using voice attack however so it's much easier and quicker now:)
If you suddenly notice a MiG on your ass, you can do most of the important air to air close combat stuff from the Pilot seat (it's almost like they thought of this very scenario) without needing RIO inputs for anything. In Dogfights, the RIO basically just turns into an extra set of eyes along for the ride, and Jester will probably continue to call out bandit location, radar locks and missile launches like he normally does.
So don't worry, you won't have to fiddle with the Jester menu when in a hurry...and anything requiring the RIO would have to give you enough time to fiddle with it (such as long range Phoenix launches...you don't cross 50-80nm in an instant XD)
Jester is pretty good and automatous, he'l usually do the right thing without much input :) just sometimes you want to get him scanning specific areas or setups can be slow with the menu.
Well at least the 14B has enough power not to fly backwards when launching a missile

Think us singleplayer guys, will have to stick with the harrier or wait for the hornet, if we want laser guided bombing. I suppose there’s always jtac aswell. This is just a bit too clunky for me, jumping between the two seats(or using ai pilot). It’s not heatblurs “fault”, it’s just the nature if the beast. It’ll be an excellent feature for multiplayer though.
Not all mutliplayer is pvp, most of my mp time is as an extension to singleplayer, doing co-op with friends! Highly recommend giving small scale mp a go.
