    Re: SP PD mode-some models of the AIM-7 (I believe from the AIM-7E-4 variant onwards) can guide on pulse-Doppler returns instead of continuous-wave returns, which allows you to launch Sparrows without lighting up the enemy's RWR, similar to the way the Phoenix can guide solely in SARH in PD STT mode.

    Loving the F14 vids my dude! Keep it up. Honestly think you might be one of the hardest working TH-camrs and I really mean that. On a side note, I've had two times where I fired off a sparrow and it flew for maybe half a mile and just nosed dive like it ran out of fuel or something. Only seen it do that twice was wondering if it's a glitch. Hmmmm

    @Cap Yes sir you are correct about the AIM-7M of the era or "block modification" or the missle. The missiles had matched or "tuned" to the AWG-9 to ensure proper tracking. It was also believed this would be helpful to prevent "cross-controlled missles" when dissimilar aircraft armed with the same missile were in the same AO to prevent the missiles from tracking off of another aircraft's radar. This was not proved or disapproved in the Navy. I believe it was a valid concern just not validated one way or the other.

    Ok, I have a question. I mainly play single player, and I've noticed some odd behavior with the F-14 and AIM-7. If I engage in a FOX1 fight and perform a crank after launch it seems that the radar struggles to keep up with the maneuver. You can actually see the line move off the bandit. When using the AIM-7M that is it. The missile loses guidance and goes stupid. Let me be clear I have not lost lock. Once leveled off the radar continues to track the bandit. I have a ton of Tackviwe data showing this. With the AIM-7MH this is not an issue. My theory is tdd that the MH has a data link with the mother ship, and that it is getting corse corrected back onto the bandit when I'm leveled off again, and the M dosen't. Any ideas.

    • @connorberube944
      @connorberube944 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ive had similiar problems
      i think i know what your seeing, when you loose lock, the diamond dissapears, but the datum cross stays on target. this is actually where the camera is looking at and your lock is gone. if you turn too much after launch but before impact, you may be turning outside the slewable angle of the radar and you would loose lock also the MH model's only difference is that it has a loft feature i believe

  • @PolarBearSeal

    Here's a question. In bore sight mode, does the Tomcat need to guide the missile? Or will the missile just find its target and track it independently?

    • @Megalodon64
      @Megalodon64 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Tomcat needs to guide the missile. Remember that the AIM-7 is a semi-active air to air missile so you have to maintain a radar lock. When you are in boresight mode you must keep the target center of the radar where the waves shoot forward and bounce back. If the target steers clear of that area, the missile will lose track.

      @@Megalodon64 Wrong. The whole point of bore sight is to use the missiles own radar only, when the aircraft's radar cannot acquire a lock or you don't want to alert the RWR of the receiving aircraft with your radar.

    • @Megalodon64
      @Megalodon64 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@user-xw4hn7lb3x Yes that is true with the AIM-54 since it has its own onboard radar but the AIM-7 does not have an onboard radar. It only has a receiver so you must maintain lock until impact. In boresight mode or FLOOD mode you must keep the target in the center of the HUD until impact.

      I attribute that to the AWG-9 being old and imperfect. Or perhaps Heatblur's F-14 and ED's AIM-7 don't agree on the exact performance of that missile.

    Have a technical question here that hopefully someone can answer: how many AIM-7 sparrow missiles can an aircraft guide against a single target, and for whatever number you claim, please explain why?

    • @grimreapers
      @grimreapers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only one as requires all of your radar's attention to guide it.

    • @larrythorn4715
      @larrythorn4715 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grimreapers So the stories of F-4 Phantom crews firing AIM-7s against single targets in pairs for higher hit chances are wrong? And all the sims allowing multiple AIM-7s/R-73/etc against a single target are as well?
      I was always under the impression that the radar and the missile never "talked" to each other, your radar focused 100% of it's time and attention on illuminating a single target and the missiles simply followed the reflections back.

    • @user-if4zv5nj5m
      @user-if4zv5nj5m 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@larrythorn4715 nope, these stories are correct. I'm not sure which old planes could guide more than 1 missile at the time, but older missiles were extremely unreliable (soviet manuals saying there is a 60% probability of hit by one missile), and due to this several missiles were fired from one or several aircraft to endure that at least one missile won't have malfunctions and will score a hit

  • @GregAtlas
    @GregAtlas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A question I've had for a while is: Are SA missiles harder to defeat using countermeasures compared to F&F missiles?
    Obviously F&F missiles have many more advantages with practical fighting, but I've been curious for this specific aspect for a long time. I think I may have researched it at one point, but I can't remember or it was pretty vague.

    • @grimreapers
      @grimreapers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow such a tough question!!! The answer depends on: what are the capabilities on the missiles radar? and the plane radar? Do they have pulse track or only pulse doppler track? How powerful/smart is each radar? After weighing up the options and ranges. I'd say it's about 50/50.

    • @dr.tankenstien
      @dr.tankenstien 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      CAP makes a good point. But bottom line is, as someone that flew in US Navy aircraft as a Aircrewman, it comes down to situational awareness of the crew. If you gain visual soon enough you stand a better than 50% chance of defeating the missile.
