What is cold shuts? I got a file, hammer and forge..just don't know what I'm doing so much. I have made knives by stock removal...would like to change it up. Don't know what cold shuts are...bet there is lots of shit I don't know... it's a process. Btw looks awesome good work..mine will not turn out like that haha... I'll best grab more files.
@@SemicrazyMagatrucker a cold shut is basically a fold in the metal that either can’t be worked out, or would need to be ground out. It causes a weak point in the metal, and can crack along that weak point a lot easier. A cold shut causes a stress riser, which basically means that there is much more force being applied to a small area, and not distributed evenly along the surface. This can lead to the knife snapping when in use.
I have a question Matt. I have made several knives that I cut from a 100 year old saw mill blade with no problems. I have one blade that I have annealed at non-magnetic, cherry red and held that temperature for 10 minutes or so. Then left in the forge on the bricks to slow cool down. I can not drill the final hole in it now for the lanyard hole. It is harder than a brick. What am I doing wrong?

Sweet blade
Based on the shape of it going into the forge, is it safe to assume you removed all the teeth first?
Yes, I removed the teeth along the edges and rounded the tip to help prevent cold shuts from forming while forging. I appreciate you watching.
