It's not a demerit to follow a narrative formula or something, writers will often adhere to a certain formula and only try to deviate from it when they believe it's relevant to the game/movie and it's characters. Of course games like Alan Wake 2, Stanley Parable, Disco Elysium etc will not follow the Hero's Journey, but those games are usually focused on storytelling. I think i failed to mention that it's not BAD, it's a structure that people have been using for millenia without even realizing, it feels good for us to see someone start like us and become a hero.
