Ah yes. In Civ, it is common knowledge that an army of Zulu warrior monks is equivalent in combat to a convoy of armored vehicles, just like pikemen can hold down a mountainous forest against helicopters.
Imagine being in the renaissance and you have guns and stuff to defend your cities, but then some Zulu tribesmen take over your cities with their fists in the name of the 'First' god.
I like to imagine that in the victory cinematic the Promotion 5 Warrior Monk just walked into a city and Battista Bombed somebody causing the city to be nuked.
I wish you would release the full gameplay as well as this new format. This format is more fun and entertaining but you learn so much more with the full gameplay.
I really have to say I love the new video format. To be honest I would probably prefer the lets play format still, because I have the time to watch them. But these new cut campaigns have defiantly much more quality and are more enjoyable to watch. I defiantly think this was a great decision to chance your set up this way. Your old community will still enjoy a potatish playthow and character and potential new people wont have to endure long champagnes to see the strategy.
I looked around a while for TH-camrs who edit their strategy games and Potato was the only one I found who doesn't just post let's plays and I love him for it.
Ahaha, Warrior Monks. They're so terrible without a mod greatly extending era duration. By the time you can even acquire them, they're basically obsolete. I think I had to apply at least a 5x, if not 10x, modifier to make them workable on a low difficulty to get the achievement to get a lv4 Warrior Monk. Luckily, the AI loves taking them and basically wasting a belief in their early religion.
umm, no. the only way you cant "get them to work without extending era length" is if you are not actively punching people with them to keep them levelling. in that case, well no fucking shit, you take any early unit and sit them inactive, and they will be worthless later on without upgrading. in fact, potato was laughing his ass off as he explained how fucking ahead of the current era his monks were. he broke 100 combat strength with them in the renaissance era.
@@babress3119 doesn't mean it doesn't work. ive done it plenty of times, on deity, with various civs. if you can pull off a first religion, its most likely a prime candidate for this to work. you however cannot play passive, you gotta keep those monks punching shit and levelling.
The Highlander is also great if you get the Ambush promotion. You can even defend moderately against a tank (with half the price and no resources required).
Well, now I understand why the AI always takes Warrior Monks in their first religion, though they never manage to do anything with them. Great video, laughs galore!
While I think the new format is a definite improvement, I wish we got to see a little more gameplay. This feels very rushed and I sometimes get a little lost about what is happening.
So I'm in the midst of a Zulu campaign after being inspired by our intrepid Potato. I must say that they are a nice strategy for the Zulu since you can get early corps. With Moksha and the Warrior Monks you can actually make units that are quite overpowered and I'm not actually sure I can think of a more powerful unit that you can get as early in the game. Where things get really nuts is the amount of Monks you can make. I am playing a Huge map and have well over 20 Warrior Monks running around, every one of them but perhaps one or two early units are corps and almost all of them 2 promotions. Potato is right, primary weakness is taking cities but with a zerg rush you can do that too, just don't be afraid to lose a few monks in the process.
I loved it at the time you posted this, and I just rewatched/listened to it. love it still. the crazy laughing as you slowly realize what I was telling you for all those months. religion is really outside your wheelhouse, but you did well, even if you couldn't make it work in deity. it is doable in deity if you can get that first religion before the ai takes warrior monks and never produces one :( they are stupid strong out the gate, and only get stronger. I love them. by the time they are replaced by normal tech units your infrastructure should be lightyears ahead of everyone else because production was not fueling your military.
If you are looking for other broken religious mechanics, look no farther than Monte. From what I have seen, apostles are considered military units and benefit from luxury strength bonuses. This gets even more broken if you are lucky enough to get Buenos Aires on your map. This can add a bit of extra strength from bonus resources as well. All you need then is an apostle that is a debater or gets triple strength in foreign civs. Watch the AI covert themselves as they lose apostles trying to get rid of your OP apostle. Like warrior monks, due the difficulty of getting a religion on deity difficulty, you need to play the game on a step or two lower. It is good for some giggles watch your apostles one or two shot apostles from other civs.
I have absolute zero Civ6 multiplayer experience, but I don't think this strategy would work against players. You just have to kill Shaka before the corps/army shanenigans happen, and you give up quite a lot of early game strength with focusing on a religion.
I started a Zulu game. I blundered into the Matterhorn right by my starting location. I remembered this video and decided to give it a shot, unfortunately as far as I can tell my warrior monks don't benefit from the matterhorn bonus. :(
I told you they were fucking fun as hell. im glad you had a lot of fun and laughs with this, even though it took a lot of time to get it to work. you normally ignore all religion so its more foreign to you than some of us. but I really enjoyed you laughing about their ridiculous power scaling. they are hilariously good, and easy to race to in the tech tree. even more fun is taking the stealth trait. surprise monk buttsex!
Quite simply, this video perfectly encapsulates why I do not like Civ 6; Its not balanced in the slightest. To be fair, Civ 5 is just as broken in its own ways; just you have some degree of serious counterplay. What counterplay is there to this strategy? Just what exactly can you actually do to stop this from happening once someone grabs warrior monks other than shutting them down immediately? Which pretty much means if they start on their own continent, or on a continent other than yours, you're basically dead when they grab deep water embarking and flood you with warrior monk armies. Really, I think only a naval power could counter this strategy, but even then, most naval powers end up falling off in strength around the Industrial era, which happens to also be when warrior monk armies become just on par with single modern units. So warrior monks basically represent you having to try and hold out until the modern era long enough to get modern+ era units, but not before the monk-rusher gets steam boats and trash your fleet. Where exactly is the counterplay here where a unit that costs only 200 faith and can get to the heights of a modern infantry men is fair? Where the "counterplay" is just "hope you don't lose a naval war, because you definitely aren't winning land battles".
great accomplishment Potato!!! do you have the full series by any chance? coulndt find it in your playlist. thanks in advance buddy .keep up the good work
