I just picked up a cheap one they couldn't get to run. Tested and no spark. Unplugged the kill switch and it fired up on the first kick. They had got frustrated and just wanted it gone. Oversize tank, XRs only pumper carb, Acerbis hand guards and all new plastics, Baja designs full street legal kit, clean and clear title for my state in hand. I was stoked when it fired right up.
so with the xr when you go to start it you have to put the engine at top dead center and find the hard spot at the top. you can kick all day with single kicks like that and get nowhere. They have to be a tdc. usually takes 2 or 3 slow kicks before it gets to the hard spot. These are not single kick bikes like a 2 stroke.
Wouldn’t you have to be somewhere between BDC and TDC of compression stroke? So as your kicking it you bring it to or a bit past TDC compression? Not being a smartarse. Genuine question/comment
@TheATVHustle I did it's an awesome machine. I can't find any in Minnesota, but I was up visiting arizona and saw it on fb marketplace. It's almost fully stock but it has a 5.8 gallon gas tank
I’d say skip all the monkeying around, you already got the valve caps off just adjust em to what factory calls for and she’ll start right up. For gods sake it’s a honda
You a booksmart guy can tell by the way you talk. Talking about how bad it is when you only paid 400us for it. If you never been on a xr you should do some research. These bikes come with a decompressor and their is a special way to kickstart them, it's not just pushing the kickstarter down. Xrs are hella of bikes I have owned and ridden all of them 250r, 400r, 600r and 650r. They are bulletproof, if you take somehow care of them they will last for ever. Where I live there is many of them all Japan made. All the way from 250r to 650r and there is many you see working daily that are in a worst condition than this one here. We use them off roads on our farm and the terrain is hella bad all with volcanic stones and they always work. Change oil and filters and never ever had an issue.
I'm not book smart at all, I'm good with my hands but bad with telling it out loud. I knew this needed a top end when I kicked it but wanted to double check. I have been selling parts for many years and have a lot of experience with the 400ex which is very close to the same engine. They are really great machines when they are running right.

Nice! That sounds like a deal!
xr400s have an auto decompression system. Thats why it feels like it has low comp.
Bet the big issue is going to be the wiring as much as the low compression on the engine.
Read starting process it is picky once you know it's no prob.can see it has fine comp.
Great video! Can’t wait to see more on the bike.
Drain old fuel from tank and carb new plug away u go TDC then nice big kick its a honda nuke proof

Looking forward to the update
Killer deal. I got a 1997 for $850 that just needed a carb rebuild - runs great.
I got mine for 1000 with just carb issues, other than that it’s fine
@@Zimbabwefr got mine for 1500, it still has pristine oem decals, unscratched plastics and 7500 kms

If u lightly go over with blowtorch at a distance on those worn plastics they shud go back bright red .
These ones were to far gone to bring back that way, they pretty much have dry rot.
Heat the plastics with a heat gun
Very nice i got one for 2,300$ its a 2003 and has no issues whatsoever
They are a great machine, it sounds like you got a good deal on yours too!

@@Dirtbikekid2010 they can be tough to find down here in ok/tx as well. People don’t wanna let them go.
@TheATVHustle yea they are awesome bikes and well worth the money
Wheres part 2 of this video ??
I ended up parting ways with this machine.
What kind of fuel tank is that?...Looks cool 😎
I believe it is an IMS Tank.
No updates on this bike?
I parted ways with this one.
@@TheATVHustle dang, what made you make that decision?
This one was due to it sitting in the shop and not having the time to get to it.
A torch flame can make the plastics look like new bro
These were brittle they look much better in the video than they actually were. I use the torch on alot of ATV plastic.
@@TheATVHustle did ya finish it? I bet it's awesome!
@@jeremykeithwilliams due to some stuff that came up in the shop I ended up parting this one out.
Nop.no way
Whats the word on this one?

Yea the cylinder was toast. I have been doing this a while and should have went for the top end right away.
