Hangman was basically younger Maverick back in the 80s that never learned to work with others until the end
He did what Maverick once did back then
Abandoned his wingmen during training session

To be fair, I don't actually think he was a jerk by nature at all, but by purpose. He's very like Maverick in the sense - he sort of pushes people's buttons, in order to push them to be better. That's how I perceived his character for the very start. Hell, one might even say his arrogance is a defense mechanism.

Eh, if I was to be a bit picky, I kind of wish we got to see a scene with how Hangman goes after them. Like maybe have him still be on the carrier while he’s listening to what’s happening to Maverick and Rooster. Hangman begins to think about what Maverick told everyone about "Never leaving your wingman." or "Don't think, just do.", and so decides to go after them. But Vice Admiral Simpson and Bates order him to stand down and that there’s nothing they could do. To which Hangman on intercoms says something like, “Seriously?” or “F*** off.”. The Vice Admirals order him him 2 - 4 more times to stand down or they will relieve Hangman of duty. To which the other Top Gun grads then get in the 2 men’s way, giving a look that says, "You relieve Hangman, you relieve all of us.". Things are about to get confrontational, until they get a call that the F-14 Tomcat with Maverick and Rooster are coming back, to which Simpson and Bates agree to send Hangman to make sure the two get back safety. Now that I think would be a perfect balance of conflict, while also giving the team a moment to show that they stand with one another, even improving Hangman's arc.

Although that attitude is not going to make new friends - it doesn't mean that they're bad people. You can see how much Hangman wanted to help. In my opinion and as per my interpretation, I think in fact when he said that phrase, he was not thinking about saving his own life at all, he was only keen to save rooster's life but unfortunately he couldn't...so he decided to die with rooster and not eject from the cockpit. He was not worried about himself dying but felt sorry for rooster to loose his life as he couldn't save him. I think, based from the 1st Top Gun, he might also have these memories about loosing rooster's dad while they lost control of the fighter jet.

I recall hangman requesting to lift off the carrier to help and having the request denied. Hangman request after Maverick is shot. He obviously got to go ahead once they realized Maverick and rooster were in the F-14 and on their way home there was probably an hour between in real world time. The movie speeds it up for pacing. Everyone else was already back on the carrier

@@guitarhero2211 you don't take off from a carrier without express permission. You need your plane hooked to the catapult, and you need said cat to launch you, or you're going nowhere.
Hangman was obviously given the green light to launch the second the F-14 was spotted: There were two enemy bandits on Maverick and Goose; a good enough reason to send your backup up to help them coming back. And probably the third and final one also was showing on their screens by the point the two first bandits had been dealt with.
TL:dr you don't fly a plane off a carrier without a catapult, and a catapult doesn't launch a plane without orders from the bridge. Hangman didn't sortie against orders.

Hangman was never a real jerk, it was clear from the start, that Hangman is a young Maverick. He even flew the mission training course like Maverick would in his younger days! 😂I read some people say Hangman is the new Iceman but wrong - he is Maverick. Iceman was never just ego-driven and reckless, and too individualistic, Maverick was. This was literally the conflict between Ice and Maverick at first: both were very talented and competitive, but Iceman was more of a team player and responsible, and Maverick wasn't, just as Hangman now isn't. Hangman, just like Maverick once, is the most talented, with a big ego, hot, individualistic, doing his own thing, but at the same time, deep inside, a good guy with a sense of humor, and a great patriot, ready to do everything for the team, he just chose a more twisted way to get there.
Just like Maverick, Hangman has a habit of leaving his wingman and going solo, and just like Maverick, Hangman saves the day at the end of the movie, because although he was not the most responsible pilot of the group, he was, in fact, the most unorthodox and talented, the fastest, that's why Mav chose him to be the 'secret weapon' in case of the emergency, and he was right! So yeah, Hangman is the new, young, modern Maverick.
Hangman should be the focus of Top Gun 3, I want to know more about Hangman! More about his background, and I want to see his friendship with Rooster develop, so they could be the new Maverick and Iceman, but Hangman needs to be the main character in the next one!

What made me cry in this scene (and I am TOP GUN fanatic from childhood), is when Maverick is saying; "no no no no no no" knowing he is powerless there... POWERLESS... having a person you love so much near you... and all your talent, skills, knowledge, experience and everythin you have cannot help you... YOU ARE POWERLESS to save person you love who is NEAR YOU... omg... that's the scariest thing in life I can imagine, IN LIFE in general, not only here in this scene...when you dont even care for your life (like Maverick here) not even a bit, but only for person you love near you... and you are powerless... so that "NO NO NO" just... broke my heart. I felt so helpless watching this scene for the first time. Them flying higher, trying to escape death, it seemed so inescapable. The score just lifted the scene as a bonus. Hearing rooster gasping for air, fearful was deep. Then , our guy hangman comes in the clutch right before all hope was lost.

Rooster screaming for Mav for comfort sounded so much like a terrified child screaming for a trusted adult. Super chilling.

I love how well played Hangman is in this movie as a contrast to Rooster's "by the book" attitude.
He is cocky but can back up his swagger. His character could have easily come across as annoying but ended up charming and likeable, just like Maverick in th first movie.

Watched this at a sold out IMAX showing and the moment Hangman’s F18 emerges outta the fire, my entire audience cheered. Such a great moment.

Quite why Hangman's jet didn't flame out from hitting the debris is yet to be answered.

I appreciate how Tom Cruise has not gone overboard with fillers and plastic surgery. He looks great.

He’s definitely had fillers unfortunately, and his teeth fixed some time ago. Hope he doesn’t do any more
