Hang Your Wood Up To Dry - A Story About Drying Wood

  • Maintaining quality and value of your lumber starts right here, when the freshly milled wood meets the air for the first time. Drying hardwoods can be tricky sometimes. You might mill some spectacular wood, only to find it severely cupped or cracked after a period of drying. I hope to shed some light on what causes these defects, and how to succeed during this critical step of the process. All of this is in the context of a small scale operation, hobbyist or even the professional woodworker who produces his or her own lumber. If you have some experience in this field, or insight you want add, please do so in the comments. It would be awesome to get a discussion going on this subject, as so many seem to be lost when it comes to drying.
    Thank you for watching and feel free to ask any questions you may have. And check out @backstromwoodwork on Instagram if you want to see more.

    Please do not equate how many subscribers you have to the level of enjoyment the rest of us have in arching what you do, how you do it and your extensive knowledge of the craft. It is greatly appreciated and your hard work doesn’t go unappreciated.

    You have some real great content. I agree with the comment below...I dont understand why you don't have thousands of followers! I have Cannon 72" Superbar, and have milled 3 logs between 40" and 60" so far. You make it look so easy! I milled for 8 hours yesterday and only got 4 sugar maple slabs, 13 feet long! Maybe you can do a video on sharpening :). Anyway, I would love to see something on your kiln. I'm thinking of building a solar kiln myself...Keep post please!

      Steve thanks man! Haha yeah milling is very hard work, 4 slabs in 8 hours is what i get as well sometimes when a log is really big or there’s trouble like nails etc. It’s quality over quantity that matters when slabbing. Thanks for the suggestions as well, I’d be happy to do a video on sharpening, and I’m currently bringing in a larger kiln so there will be videos on that as well.

    I feel strongly about whatever WE as people do to the forest meaning harvest the natural resources WE need to replant for what we take out. Or we the people will NOT have anymore trees, even oxygen nor the projects that we all enjoy doing. Like you've mentioned about the 100 year old tree. Loooooong time to get a tree to get that size

    Just wondering what your thoughts are on painting the ends of logs? Some people insist it has to be done with expensive products, some say old house paint is fine and some people don't do anything at all. What do you think?

    Great stuff, If only I could buy some Swedish forest.Look forward to seeing your kiln.And how long you leave the timber in the forest before placing in the kiln, Thanks

      Hey thanks for commenting. I usually leave slabs of this size (3” thick) for about a year before I put it in the kiln. For most woods that seem to work pretty good. Oak can take a bit longer to airdry though, so I try and let it sit for 18 months or so.

    Riktigt bra kanal. Hittade hit igår och har hunnit med några klipp.
    Skulle du hellre torka virket inomhus i en gammal luftig lada i ett par år eller är utomhus att föredra?

    • @backstromwoodwork566
      @backstromwoodwork566  ปีที่แล้ว

      Välkommen! Kul att du tycker det är bra videos :) ja att torka i en lada hade varit optimalt, jag har inte ännu någon större lagerhall för lufttorkning, men det är på agendan och kommer troligtvis bli av i framtiden. Det som utan tvekan förstör virket allra mest är solen, jag täcker över mina staplar med gammal takplåt, men det är inte heller optimalt. För bästa resultat så ska virket ligga helt skyddat från sol från alla håll, med gott om luftcirkulation, så en gammal lada med mycket glipor i väggarna är ju perfekt

      @@backstromwoodwork566 kanon tack. Jag är lite sugen på att skaffa en Granberg och en Stihl. Lada har jag tillgång till. Vet några större stockar (ek på dryga metern) också som jag nog kan få.
      Tycker du Stihl 661 räcker eller är 881 att föredra?
