  • An anti-low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) party, back by actress Florence Pugh’s father, has won Oxford City Council seats in the local elections.
The Independent Oxford Alliance gained four seats on Friday, taking three from Labour.
The party has campaigned on backlash from LTNs since its launch in November, but said it is not explicitly “anti LTN”, but a “pro-democracy party”.
The grassroots party has been backed by Clinton Pugh, who says his restaurants in the area have been affected by the traffic managing schemes.
He joins Talk’s Mike Graham on Morning Glory.

If local councillors don't respect democracy. Don't pay council tax and expose their corruption.

Easy to say, but then that person will need a lawyer or they'll lose their home. There was a man up north, (maybe it was Northumberland). He had a small debt to the council. He couldn't pay it and he couldn't advocate for himself because he had severe depression. The council took his house and he took his own life. (I can research details if you like.)

What you need to do "legally" is withhold payment because you are unhappy with the service you are receiving.
What you then do is put aside the money you would be paying untill such times you pay your debt back to the council.
If enough people did this it would make a big bold statement and force council to actually listen with an ever shrinking budget.

@@Enoo-Wynn Oh it happens and lawyers in local government should be held accountable for this. ~An elected body that moves outside its remit is usually doing so to advantage itself.

They want to bring in permits for a certain number of journeys on certain Oxford routes. You’ll get 25 if you’re an Oxfordshire resident for instance and more if from Oxford.
Some of us commute plenty, not through choice but to actually support our families.
Public transport is shocking and these councillors are not listening at all to concerns of the local community.
Instead, they’re foisting upon all of us measures which they even admit are to “change behaviour”.
Who the fuck do these people think they are?

    • @AlunThomas-mp5qo

I remember living in Oxford when the council was 'listening'. The problem is, 'listening' without processing it is simply stasis. People who attended such meetings included the best brains in the country who could solve problems. They were listened to without comment. So the council got away with listening-without-comment and listening-without-action. It's rule by 'thickos'; too thick to think.

Bradford council is out of control. Bankrupt and dismal. Yet they went against the vote of the community in Ilkley and have set up 20mph limits townwide and horrendous speed bumps which no one wants. Here in Ilkley we are ignoring the 20 mph limit as we view it as illegal and uninforcable. We do however recognise the sensible limits imposed outside of schools and care homes and surgeries which were already in place. The cost of this decision by Bradford council is horrendous and should have been spent enforcing the law in Bradford itself which is the worst city in the UK
