One Christmas many years ago, I was informed by my wife of 16 years, the mother of my two beautiful children, my high school sweetheart, the ONLY woman I had ever slept with, wanted a divorce.
Not much Christmas cheer at our home that year.
Within 2 years I was grateful my former spouse had left me. I met a wonderful woman and had decades of happiness in that new relationship. I never would have met her unless I had been told to pack my bags.
Some of the best gifts don't look like gifts until you have them a while.

Then, the day after, the men in command started back with their orders and you must obey. the first music concert i saw live was an italian band calle 'PFM' , it was around christmas 1975 or 6 at an old theatre in Quebec city. It had a super wide side walk in front at least 50 by 100 feet . the theatre people did not open the doors to let people in t'ill the last minute and there was no reserved seats with a capacitiy of about 1,100 , it was first come first served and the doors to enter where outward opening , the 1000 + croud waiting to enter was all their cramed at the door, when the theater personel tried to open the doors they could not, somehow a panic ensude and a unstopable crowd movement followed , people at the front literaly went through the front glass doors. I was carried inside with the others around me helplessly. apparently one person got trempled (not too seriously) and a few others got minor injuries , the concert was given and me and my buddys even managed good seat , the band was great, all in all it was a luky night that could have ended much worst.

My worst Christmas could have been way worse.
About five years ago, my mom (62 at the time) was in the yearly Christmas Eve midnight mass choir but was having a hard time catching her breath. This was at about one in the morning. Back home all the presents were wrapped and the fixings ready to make Christmas dinner the next day.
My dad took her to the hospital, turns out she was having arrhythmia, like really bad, like her heart was operating at 20% normal capacity. The doctor was shocked she walked in the door. Obviously they kept her in the ICU that night....and for several days afterwards.
Me and my three siblings only learned about this Christmas morning over the phone, and since none of the Christmas food was prepared we did...frozen pizza instead...so we spent Christmas terrified mom was not going to survive the day eating frozen pizza.
Although we did bring our presents to the ICU room and open them with her, which was pretty cute.
Thankfully she recovered and got that ablative therapy where they cook the specific part of the heart that's beating incorrectly. She battled it for a few years with repeat treatments but she's ok now. She has like ZERO cholesterol build up though which at her age is amazing.

My parents would ask me what I wanted for Christmas every year from the age of 12 to 17. I asked for a winter hat and scarf set for Christmas. I never got a winter hat and scarf set. The sixth year they asked me what I wanted and I told them that I didn't want anything. They were shocked and asked why. I told that every year I have asked for the same thing and never gotten so they will get me what they want anyways. I left it at that and forgot about it. For Christmas that year I got FIVE sets of winter hat and scarf! In fact I got more than that because everyone got me a hat and scarf set for Christmas! I was thrilled and those sets lasted me for the next ten years.

Every single holiday I've celebrated in my life was laden with trauma and violence. This, 2022, is the first year I'm celebrating the end of the year with people who actually care, without my mother's vicious grip on my shoulder. When a friend asked if I wanted to come with her to spend Christmas with her family, I broke down and ended up crying for about half an hour.
My anxiety around holidays is still a huge problem despite experiencing four holidays alone for the first time, but I'm confident in my ability to enjoy them despite it.

I was in the Maldives during the Boxing Day Tsunami. I remember seeing the atol our island was situated in draining of water, and seeing reefs I’d scuba dived around the previous day during a Christmas Day scavenger hunt. It was crazy. Then the water rushed back in, and swamped the island... nothing like the dramatic pictures from elsewhere, but it did wash straight over the low lying land. We where spared the worst of it, as I’m guessing we where shielded by the other islands in the atol. I remember the rest of the day watching boat after boat of refugees from the other islands coming to ours as we had power. I still recall one mother and her kids, who walked everywhere clutching or wearing their life vests, for fear of other waves.
All the phone masts has been either knocked out, or turned off / switched over to the S&R effort, so we couldn’t call home to let anyone know we where ok. When we did get through, my mother was first furious and then sobbing with relief. I will remember that call forever. She even used to choke up a bit whenever she saw it on TV, as for 24 hours she thought my wife and I where dead.

Cyclone Tracy was a tropical cyclone that from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day, 1974, devastated the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. It is the most compact cyclone or equivalent-strength hurricane on record. killed 71 people, caused A$837 million in damage (1974 dollars), or approximately A$6.41 billion (2014 dollars), or $4.94 billion 2014 USD. It destroyed more than 70 percent of Darwin's buildings, including 80 percent of houses. Tracy left more than 25,000 out of the 47,000 inhabitants of the city homeless prior to landfall and required the evacuation of over 30,000 people. Spectacular photos online show whole suburbs with nothing higher than a mailbox.

I want to add a little silver lining to your video and talk about my best christmas present ever. I was in Thailand on that day in 2004. I was camping on the Similan Islands, a small chain of islands 40 miles west of the mainland in the Andaman Sea. I was there with my parents, cousin, and girlfiend. On the morning of the tsunami, I was seriously ill with what i believe was pneumonia and was trying to decided if I should hitch a ride to the mainland to go to a hospital. Everyone was going out snorkeling that morning, so I decided to get some rest in the tent and not ruin their fun. I got my wallet and sandles on to get a shower and buy breakfast before I napped when our tour guide found me and insisted I get breakfast on the boat and that he would bring me back after. Well, once on the boat, I didnt want to impose on anyone and decided I would nap on the boat while everyone was having fun. The boat came around to the east side of the island and everyone hit the water to check out the coral reef. That is when the tsunami hit. The water level dropped, leaving the snorkelers sitting on coral then rebounded and repeated. We knew it must be a tsunami, so we got everyone back onboard to head for deeper water. We picked up some divers who had been swept away from their boat and went back to the camp when we felt it was safe. When we arrived at the camp which was in a cove on the west side of the island, it was gone and the cove was strewn with tangled floating tents and debris. if that tour guide had not insisted i come with him, I would have drowned right there in that bay, wrapped in a tent... So, while it was cetainly the worst christmas ever, that tour guide gave me the best present ever.... breakfast on a boat that I didnt want to be on. (also, everyone with me survived, though I was the only one with sandals and a wallet... and a boy working on the island found my backpack stuck in the sand on the beach with my passport and all my clothes... so, bonus present)

Well as an Australian, I'm disappointed you didn't include Cyclone Tracy. Category 4 cyclone, killed 74 people, caused the equivalent of US$4.9 billion dollars in damage, destroyed 70% of Darwin's buildings (& 80% of houses), forced 30,000 of the city's 47,000 people to evacuate, and left 25,000 homeless.

When I was 19, I lost my great grandmother. She was the center of my family. She died at 92. Each Christmas without her is a little worse then the last. She left this world with dozens of friends, dozens of family members, and not a single enemy. When she passed I felt like I didn't do enough for her, spend enough time with her. But at her funeral her final written words told me that I did more then enough for her to know how much she meant to me. She was an amazing woman. And even after her passing made me feel better. I may be 26, and have the rest of my life ahead of me, but I'd give it all up, for one more family dinner at her house. Its been almost 7 years, and I still cannot believe she's gone.

Christmas is kind of sucked ever since not going to lie, but at least now I know that there are true genuine Christmas miracles. Christmas is overblown materialistic greed and has been since the 80's. So many spoiled people (especially kids, I blame their parents) who think they deserve stuff, like it's some kind of right instead of being grateful for what they have. If you get a thoughtful gift and it's from someone who really cares then that should be enough for any of us.

In the six months leading up to Christmas, l had lost both my parents, the family home and all but a handful of memorabilia due to their debt situation, had had to spend all my savings on funeral costs, legal costs and air tickets, AND had been kicked out of my apartment. 2017 sucked big time! 2018 hasn’t turned out much better, just a month ago I found out that my entire department is being closed down and I‘ll be out of a job come February 1st, but at least it is not quite as bleak as last year.
Sure, that light at the end of the tunnel might be a high speed train coming my way, but given the reliability of trains here in Ireland, I should be safe ;)

A year and a half after this video was released. Nowhere near Christmas. Still a terrific video.

Thank you Joe, in my world it's shaping up to either be a really good Christmas, or really bad one. I needed a reality check, it could always be worse. So I guess I'm going to have a really good Christmas.

I was 15 in 2004 and one of my best friends was in Thailand for the holidays. I´ll never forget waking up to the news of a big tsunami, no one knew how bad it was at the time just that it was bad, we all frantically started texting our friend on our Nokia 3310´s but as you can imagine we never recieved an answer. The only survivor from their party was her boyfriend, he lost his parents and his girlfriend, the funeral was jam packed and an open casked was not possible due to the condition of the body... Hopefully the worst Christmas me and the rest of that funeral attendees will ever experience.

I used to listen to a radio show. One time they talked about a drunk driver who drove into their house Christmas night. I found proof of it in a Cleveland news report. Everyone lived and the house was quickly repaired, they infact used the settlement to build an addition. They celebrated all later Christmases in said addition.

I wanted a Schwinn Stingray in the worst way for my 9th birthday. I got an English racer instead!!! Like a 10 speed frame with upright handlebars and a saddle seat. I was scarred for life. Enjoy your videos.

I don't remember having a happy Christmas, ever? Its always been just another day. No family get-togethers, no present's, no special food.

When you get 10 and you get clothes for Christmas:
    😐 "Am I a joke to you? "
