    I find it so heartwarming that Gandalf is an immortal being, and yet, he loves the smallest, most insignificant creatures in Middle-Earth. He could serve the great kings of men and give them council, but he chooses to light fireworks with children.

      @L3- -37 I think what he is trying to say is this. Gandalf is free to choose the "glory" of serving with kings and holding high positions. But he mostly chooses the "joy" of humble folk and entertaining the youth. Gandalf routinely chooses joy over glory. When it's needed, he does his duty for the sake of both... Even when it would risk, and then lead, to his death.

      Frodo's Lament for Gandalf, that he writes when he arrives in Lothlorien after fleeing Moria with the fellowship, addresses just the points you raised here.
      When evening in the Shire was grey
      his footsteps on the Hill were heard;
      before the dawn he went away
      on journey long without a word.
      From Wilderland to Western shore,
      from northern waste to southern hill,
      through dragon-lair and hidden door
      and darkling woods he walked at will.
      With Dwarf and Hobbit, Elves and Men,
      with mortal and immortal folk,
      with bird on bough and beast in den,
      in their own secret tongues he spoke.
      A deadly sword, a healing hand,
      a back that bent beneath its load;
      a trumpet-voice, a burning brand,
      a weary pilgrim on the road.
      A lord of wisdom throned he sat,
      swift in anger, quick to laugh;
      an old man in a battered hat
      who leaned upon a thorny staff.
      He stood upon the bridge alone
      and Fire and Shadow both defied;
      his staff was broken on the stone,
      in Khazad-dûm his wisdom died.

    I struggled with depression and introversion for many years, to the point where I dropped out of university, stayed at home (sometimes for many days without even going on the balcony to just grab some fresh air) and had literally no idea or even the will to decide what I wanted to do with my life. I had no friends and felt alone. I lied to myself back then that isolation is peace, but you can only fool yourself with that for a while.
    At some point, I ordered the LOTR Extended trilogy. I had seen the films in the theatres as a child still, but not since then and had forgotten most of the plot. After watching them again, I got stuck in the scene with Gandalf and Frodo in Moria, where Frodo expresses that he wished none of this had happened. At that point, I saw some similarities in Frodo and me. But I will not lie, Gandalf's response hit me like a rock:
    "So do all who get to live such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
    You cannot imagine how much of an impact these words had on me. I watched this scene again and again. To put a long story short, it gave me the initial push I so desperately needed. Even though it was not easy at first, I overcame my depression, became a more open person towards others, completed my studies, found a job that I like and generally, returned to how life should be. I have never been happier in my life than now.
    To all out there, suffering from similar issues: You are not alone. There are countless like you. When I was affected, I had literally no faith or self-esteem at all. NONE. I did not think myself able to overcome my insecurities. But then, a wizard in a fantasy world made me realise that all you need is a spark. Something that is your driving force. No, it will not be easy at first, but if you can find the will to say "I really WANT to do this.", even when sometimes you might think you cannot, you will be surprised by what your persistence can reveal about your inner self. I certainly was.
    Thank you, Gandalf, for giving me words to live by, and thank you, uploader, for bringing tears to my eyes.

      I’m glad that you’re still here with us and that everything ended up working out to bring you joy. It really is amazing that sometimes what you need is a certain set of words to bring you to a realization that things will get better. I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety for many years but I’ve learned how to make it work as well as it can.
      LOTR also helped me through a lot of tough times and I love these books and movies for providing an escape.
      Be strong, and I hope you find happiness through the rest of your days, my friend.

      Remember, death is just another path. A mere human can't just understand what's beyond this world but there is something out there which we can't explain yet because we haven't evolved that much but that doesn't mean everything is lost. There's always be something, something good in this world and beyond this form which are in. After our death, we'll know.

    This is what I miss from George R. R. Martin's books. None of these things that Gandalf says can fit into A Song of Ice and Fire.
    "I don't know. Saruman believes it's only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I've found. I've found it's the small things. Everyday deeds from ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love".
    Even though that quote is not from Tolkien, it's entirely in Tolkien's book's spirit. Martin's strong realism makes it impossible to forward such a message, but it's these sorts of messages that were essential to the foundation of Fantasy.

      I don’t know if I’d call George’s realism at least when compared to LOTR. Because I know people like Sam and Gandalf, and so did Tolkien. Too often in today’s society we push out hope as childish or naive, but when your in the trenches and you friends and allies are dying around you, hope is all you have. Hope and goodness is what drives the darkness away otherwise the world would have fallen long ago and us with it.

      Panos Topalidis Thank you very, very much for this video. I was 6 years old too, when I saw the Fellowship for the first time - but not in the theaters... My grandma let me watch the VHS tape with her, and few years later I saw the other movies...
      At first I didn't understand it too well. But it grew with me quickly... and now, 13 years after seeing it for the first time as a kid, the movie has grown deep into my heart, and will keep growing ever more, I'm sure. It has a very personal meaning to me.
      The LOTR books AND the movies are miracles. Tolkien and Jackson are both geniuses, and their work carries such deep importance, speaks of love, of kindness, of friendship... Once I understood that, understood that THAT was the main point of the movies, I actually cried, realizing the true beauty of this masterpiece of a trilogy.
      These movies I will never tire of watching, and will one day show them to my children, so that they too could let their beauty into their heart and mind, where it will certainly stay forever, as it will for me.
      Again, many thanks for your lovely video, which perfectly summarizes the meaning of the three towering Tolkien works.

    I think the most bittersweet moment was at the Grey Havens. Gandalf was sent to Middle Earth to help fight Sauron. Now that he is defeated it is time for him to go back to Valinor. "Farewell, my brave hobbits. My work here is now finished. I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are an evil." It's so sad that he is leaving and nobody will see him again. But we can't help but feel glad that after so many years, Sauron is defeated and Gandalf's task completed.

    I think Gandalf is the greatest among the angels is because he didn't place himself above the people of Middle Earth like Saruman and Sauron did. He walks among them, learns from them, and understands sometimes a hand on the shoulder, an act of kindness can give courage to help them through dark times.

Its just brilliant.

      + his ancestors had fought Balrogs. He probably grew up reading stories about those fights, and here he finds himself just witnessing the death of one of the most powerful beings in Middle-Earth by the hands of a balrog. Orlando does a fantastic job at portraying Legolas' emotions. Confused, in shock, sorrow.

    • @mortman200
      @mortman200 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The elves don't respond upon death. They are given passage to Aman when their time comes, but those that are slain are dead. Legolas's confusion is because he hasn't experienced death on a personal level, period. He had never been outside the woodland realm, so all his life he had only known the undying elves. Killing orcs is one thing, but to see even a Maiar fall in battle would have shaken him to his core
