    I am playing through the first game right now and I am happy to see some of my house rules were applied to the official rules. My main gripe with the game was always having to spend 1 energy to explore, even if the action wouldn't really use energy from the characters (for example, choosing between going further into a forest or talking to locals costs the same). In this game they changed it so each action has its own cost. The way I play is I will only spend energy if I think the action would really make my characters spend energy.
    I am happy to see they are also making these changes to the first game. For me it is a great game but it requires a mixture of Story mode + house rules to be a good experience

    One last question here. Between this and ISS Vanguard, which takes up more table space. This one looks like it starts rather small with a couple of tiles, but might start to sprawl. Does it just grow to about the same size as ISS Vanguard? Does one take up a significant amount more space, or is it pretty much the same?

    • @OneStopCoopShop
      @OneStopCoopShop  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      On average I would say Tainted Grail takes up less space, because often before a given location sprawls too much you "travel" to another area and clear out all the cards. I don't remember ever having huge trouble fitting everything on the table.

  • @PRC533
    @PRC533 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I just got a copy of Tainted Grail and have been playing through the first campaign with my wife. We have already run into the grind in Act 2 of keeping menhirs running while still having resources to actually play the game. This version certainly looks like Fall of Avalon 2.0, which is probably good. I may even go ahead and adopt some of these rules as others have said for house rules to make the game flow better and stop it from being such a slog to the point that it interferes with the story. I was interested to hear you talk about some railroading even in the original, and that may come later. So far I've actually had the opposite problem where the objectives have been left so vague that they are difficult to complete.

    • @OneStopCoopShop
      @OneStopCoopShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it's interesting to compare the two. Especially in acts 2 and 3 the original Tainted Grail opens up a ton, perhaps too much as you noted.
      Here, it feels much more controlled, at least for the two acts I've played. Like for Act 2 you set up a new area, and it only has about 10 location cards, so you aren't wandering aimlessly hoping the story starts :)
      Though that could make some feel less of a sense of exploration and discovery...

    • @PRC533
      @PRC533 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OneStopCoopShop Yeah, though I feel like Destinies does a really good job of allowing players agency while still keeping a relatively compact story. In that game I never feel like I'm wandering around hoping for something to happen. I'm hoping that some of the streamlining you are talking about gives me more of that feel, and that's kind of what it looks like from what you've shown this far.

  • @sarahracicot2299

    The OG Tainted Grail is my favorite game ever. Kings of Ruin was an insta-back for Past Me. Current Me just finished another campaign of the original though and is now re-watching stuff about Kings of Ruin to get excited as it comes closer to delivery. And, honestly... now I'm a little worried. I love the original. I don't think it is too hard. It's definitely difficult, but I have never felt a need to house rule stuff. Kings of Ruins seems so easy in comparison. Now you don't need to eat! Now you can explore everywhere for free! Now you don't need to light Menhirs and can just trek through the wyrdness! (Or if you want to, activate waystone, for way less cost than menhir.) It seems a little ridiculous to me. Like for sure I don't want my games to be Robinson Crusoe Cannibal Island level difficulty. But Avalon is supposed to be a bit of a dangerous place, so the game should not just be cakewalk adventure where I can skip across the whole wyrdness-infested island and never have to eat food again. But, Past Me must not have been too worried about it all this. Maybe Current Me is just over-reacting now?

    • @OneStopCoopShop
      @OneStopCoopShop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re definitely overreacting I think. I had a review of the game a month or two ago (I got to play a nearly finished prototype of chapters 1-5), and the game is still hard as hell

    Thanks for sharing. Looks like a game I would enjoy. Will check out the campaign.
    Question - How important is it to get the add on box of miniatures? I mean, are they used a lot or rarely? Is each creature only used once through the story? Asking, because I don't know if the creature minis would be something that would add a lot to the play experience. I could be totally wrong, but it seems to me that the story and decisions are the main aspects and the minis are secondary.

    • @OneStopCoopShop
      @OneStopCoopShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I've played, the minis would show up very rarely, and like you said only for one section of the game and then done. I certainly wouldn't consider them a must-have, but I also don't love giant minis taking up my shelf space in general ;)

    @mattdavis7259 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks, Mike! I share your excitement. I'm curious about whether the Fall of Avalon could be played with the Kings of Ruin rule tweaks. Do you think that would work?

    • @OneStopCoopShop
      @OneStopCoopShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Others have asked that too, and my answer is... kind of?
      The new food rule would be easy to use, and would make the game a bit easier.
      Exploration costing 0 would be harder, because they don't account for that in the current story book... though the $8 upgrade pack says it has a new story book PDF, so maybe it will have reduced costs?
      Waystones and flipped locations you can still move through could kind of be cobbled together to replace menhirs, but it's a much bigger overhaul.

    So I'll throw this out: I'm not a big fan of the summarization style. Part of the fun of these videos for me is getting an idea of what the plot feels like as you move through it and seeing what the prose is like.
    I understand the concern about episode length, but I was significantly less engaged with the second half of the video that I was the first, since I didn't have nearly as much narrative context.

      I think the food fix would be simple enough to port, though yes it would make things easier.
      The waystone mechanic could be… sort of adapted? You could ignore the listed costs for lighting menhirs and make them cheaper. You could take away them counting down. Its a petty, because is an interesting game and well manufactured also with a lot of new and interesting mechanics, but a lot of times the narrative was so bad, that u couldn't finish a chapter because of it. I mean one time i found a major thing, and that was it. It didnt gave you a food,weapon or some sort of compensation, u just had to continue with the story......but with what?
