Just stumbled upon this and here just to say glad to see there's an interviewer that actually asks interesting questions instead of dumb copypaste like "was it fun to make the movie?".
Everybody asks him about the laugh, but nobody has mentioned his stance and walk; which blew me away. He did a similar thing in "The Master", the crouched owner sluggish walk he pulled off - even when he was running, as though he had stiff legs.
Cesar Romero: The Clown. Jack Nicholson: The Gangster. Mark Hamil: The Joker. Heath Ledger: The Anarchist. Jared Leto: The Joke. Joaquin Phoenix: The Man.
Apparently, he’s a pain on set and walked off a couple times but not because he’s an asshole. He just has to feel the character or the scene or he physically can’t do it. But I don’t think that’s him being a prick. That’s him trying to give it his all but if he doesn’t feel it, then he struggles to give 100% and shit if Joaquin needed a month to get into it, I’d give him 3! His performances are so astonishing that if he needs time to give people that, then within reason, give it to him.
@@BCS1105 Joaquin would get frustrated with himself during scenes and would walk off to get in the right headspace. No idea why everyone is acting like that's such a horrible thing. He didn't have to because the darkness was already in him. He had a hell of an upbringing, all he needed was to channel it and bring it to the surface.
@@SpicyGuac28 No. He is literally one of the best to ever do it in fucking history. He's greater than the credit he gets. We should let him know while he lives.
probably a mix of a tight schedule, not wanting to over stay and feeling awkward about hanging around too long lol. but you could tell todd phillips really liked the guy and was trying to have a small conversation and the dude just DIPPED lmao
When you are a normal person/actor and have to reach a dark place it can be challenging and cause actors to spiral, like what happened to Ledger. Phoenix is comfortable in the weird and dark place because he is a weird and dark guy.
Orlando Gastelum 👏👏 all actors are different though. I’m glad to hear from Joaquin he just channels his creativity and doesn’t get psychotically locked into it like some others .
Geoffrey Wilson personally I find it the opposite. A close friend who’s very near schizophrenia is an amazing actor and has to literally lose himself in character and eat breathe sleep the character.. and my acting doesn’t come out that way. And I don’t get locked in a happy one or sad one. I can turn on and off the ruse cause I’m very imaginative. My friend, who’s easily manipulated, needs to “method” act because he doesn’t know even his own feelings half of the time and has vices. But I appreciate all artists. Anyone who is brave and puts themself out there for examination and captures the interest of others is doing their art well, and it’s a gift.
I dunno why but I am smiling so much watching this interview. The guy sounded so excited and so happy to meet them and you can see the level of respect he has for them. Great interview.
and well mannered... dident bring up politics and kept it professional and to the point. You can also see how passionate he is about movies. Media needs more peoples like him.
Jake is easily the best interviewer in the game. He’s passionate and he always comes up with fantastic questions that no one else asks. Even better, he asks things we actually want to hear as film fans
Jaime Cerrillo i agree, its kinda hard to seperate reality from character when you put 100% so itll probably take some time for him to go back to his true form whenever that is
I love this interviewer. I just finished watching the Joker in the cinema right this evening, came back like half an hour ago, held off any spoilers or content before watching it, and went in with an open mind and it blew me away and I love how the interviewer captured these feelings and that excitement and went about his questions in-depth and with the excitement and awe we all probably feel after watching the film. It felt really good to hear these things from the creators in the way they did! Can't be captured on paper, an interview worthy for being in the shape it is! Thank you so much for the added value for the enjoyment of the film!
I'm a jaded 39 and I havent been excited about a movie since forever but I'm so excited for this. Joaquin is so good I've watched the trailer a dozen times.
Someone Else How can you not be excited with so many great movies coming out?! I saw Parasite last night and I couldn’t believe what I saw. I hope you look beyond the blockbusters, because it’s a great time for independent film and foreign movies.
Jason O'Brien trolling, like Andy Kaufman or Sacha Baron Cohen maybe. Method would be more akin to, being the character behind closed doors with family and mate like Daniel Day Lewis etc
That's actually what Heath Ledger did to prepare for his Joker role. He stayed in a motel alone and watched the news and kept a journal that contained "things that the Joker would find funny." Sounds familiar, eh? When I saw Arthur's diary/joke book in the movie, I thought it was probably inspired by Heath Ledger. Now that I know Joaquin actually kept that notebook as a real journal to prepare for his role, I'm certain of it.
Hes such an amazing artist and secure with him self he doesn't need to act all deep and artsy and about how he had to live as the character. I love his honesty here. He was acting and that is the truth.
Never watched you or your channel before. I also rarely ever leave a comment. But your excitement and genuinely thought provoking questions is refreshing. You obviously did your research before the shoot and it shows. You didn't phone it in with the same questions every other journalist will ask. You went a bit deeper and I appreciate that.
Remus Lupin ~ thanks for the comment! I just searching the trailers of the two movies you’ve introduced to me and yea I got interest to watch these film I missed to watch before.
I would go as far as to say his performance in Joker is nowhere near to that in The Master. Freddy Quill managed to get me twice as much emotionally invested in him than joker.
lol the way the interviewer exits at the end really fast, like he really has to get somewhere else while todd phillips is still sitting there, is funny
From growing up in a cult, living in a one bedroom apartment with 7 members and has barely any food as a child, seeing his brother die in his own arms. He probably didn’t need to adapt in the darkness. Im so glad he’s doing great now with a successful career
Jake you are honestly one of the best interviewers out there. Most actors hate doing press they seem to come alive with you I think because you don't ask the mundane boring questions.
I didn't want a sequel before. I do NOW. Joaquin's answer to the question of how Arthur would react to eventually meeting Batman- "He's going to get very excited"- is so perfect, now I really, really want to see Joaquin's interpretation of that. Because the character of Joker IS excited by Batman's existence. He feels that he and Batman are two of a kind, and the only people in the world who can truly understand each other. Soul mates, in their own way. Now just imagine Arthur's Joker meeting Batman and feeling that way about him. All that horrifying loneliness, the sensation of being "left-footed" with the whole world- and then he meets Batman. The emotional impact of Joker seeing something in Batman that he recognizes, someone LIKE HIM, and gaining the strange, intense connection that they share, goes up 1000% because we as viewers have had such an intimate look at how isolated and estranged Arthur felt before. In this way, the Joker movie would add something unique to the story of Batman and Joker. I kind of desperately need to see it, now.
GREAT JOB JAKE. Amazing questions as always, you're so engaging and they seem invested and your questions leave them room to think and be honest. So so great. All that nervousness for nothing! Cant wait till your next interview as always! #BlenderFamily

Nobody is born for the Joker role. That's what's so great about it. Leto didn't understand the character at all so he's the only one I can think of that didn't deserve it.
I've seen The Joker, and i now can't look at him as Joaquin Phoenix

Wow, getting that kind of response out of Phoenix just shows what a talented, thoughtful interviewer you are, Jake. It's rare to sense a connection between him and the people on press junkets.
It’s because he has good questions and is knowledgeable of what he’s talking about as well.
And also the respect the interviewer shows, notice how he calls Joaquin “Sir” at the beginning. When you are humble and kind to another being they’ll more than likely return the favor.
Big ups to Jake, he hasn't lost his touch after all these years. I hope you're still repping Houston since the old fold-out couch days, good sir.

frydsaman but how tho? In what way?
@@frydsaman6857 On the contrary Its a very relevant question, especially since its an origin story and, having seen the movie, it ties in with a person who represents something wearing a mask, a theme very prevalent in the film. He's so non pretentious, it shows why is such a brilliant actor! What a cool person man!
@@BCS1105 what you just said about him being a pain and walking off is completely FALSE.
El'amin mochichi It’s not. Todd Phillips recently did an interview and explained it. Look it up before you accuse.
You can be pretentious and be a good actor. You just have self esteem and self acceptance issues.
@@BCS1105 Joaquin would get frustrated with himself during scenes and would walk off to get in the right headspace. No idea why everyone is acting like that's such a horrible thing. Todd talks about Joaquin with such high praise and said he would love to work with him again on anything, so I think people just misinterpreted what he said.
He didn't have to because the darkness was already in him. He had a hell of an upbringing, all he needed was to channel it and bring it to the surface.

Thank god, tired of this “dark place” shit. They are just masters of they’re craft and are passionate as hell.
The whole term of "Oh I was in a dark place" makes me wanna say "go n buy a lamp"!
Tiki80 all he has are negative thoughts

Disagree. Joaquin seems uninterested
Imagine an actor so dedicated to his character that he even wrote a note book from it’s standpoint.
Lal Lian Zuala in acting class they make you do that anyway
Hes such an amazing artist and secure with him self he doesn't need to act all deep and artsy and about how he had to live as the character. I love his honesty here. He was acting and that is the truth.
