Bravo for making useful information fun. Proof that there are more ways than one to solve problems. This would have been most helpful to me when I was a poor starving college student! And I think there are a lot of those.
For all sticking keys I treat the pads with Old English furniture polish before each gig. Use a Q tip and rub it around the pad and the tone hole. It cleans off the sugars that cause the sticking. I live in Florida and this stops the pads from sticking on hot and humid days. Rarely I have had to treat the G# and the C again before the fourth set. I have Roo pads on all my horns and have used this trick for years without it damaging the pads. My last set lasted almost ten years.
Ha! Thanks heaps for the tip on the sandpaper :) My G# has been sticking like crazy on a recent acquisition and I'd been trying loads of different things (I knew it wasn't mechanical as when I slid some paper over the tone hole, the key immediately lifted). Watched this vid, found some sandpaper (didn't use wet and dry though), two draws and the sticky pad was fixed. Thanks heaps :)

I couldn’t agree more. She is indeed the prettiest musician I’ve ever known and seen too. I’m truly dying to see or watch miss Chez live on stage or in a solo saxophone concert sometime back here in my hometown of Saint Louis Missouri USA. Didn’t know there were this many ideas and hacks to playing and taking care of a saxophone weather it’s an alto or tenor.
I'm new here but an old axe player (still have my Alto from 4th grade elementary) became a programmer... so am a hard core hack. We can have enough trouble with our Saxen without having to worry about Viruses Worms and Trojan Horses. In the old meaning of 'hacking' for a sax it might be using super glue to affix the reed to the mouthpiece -- or -- weakening the neck strap so it would work fine until it had the weight of a sax on it... then it would break. Now THAT is a sax hack ;)
Thank you. I personally don't like my reeds drying at all. I have a plastic storage container with a sponge inside. I put regular Listerine mouth wash in it and put the reeds in their little cases on top of the sponge. So my reeds are always disinfected, wet and tasty :)
I have a tip for you-quit using cane reeds. try rico plasticovers amazing for rock and loud gigs and bigband. you don't have to wet them and they last a long long time. I switched 15 years ago. best move of my career. still cane underneath but more projection and edge. eaiser on the chops also. I double a lot and need a reed that's ready to go as soon as I pick up the horn
Peter, listen to quality clarinet concertos, late 18th, early 19th century. Or piano concertos written with time saving features. Composers would write down basic melody, basic structure; players would embellish it during the rehearsals and concerts. Same embellishments (adding of missing grammar) you can apply in saxophone playing, regardless of style. No sure what part of the UK the accent is but that typically means a Blend from South London often for me. I'd like to add something a legendary sax player taught me to do before sand paper on a G# for sticking. Frequently we would use a Fresh USD bill before big performances. It worked great and had some texture to it and often when one did it, the Bill would make it down the horn line (Till the Bari player pocketed it typically) So I got a bass ! Keep up the Video's and Hope you make it to the SE USA ! Come play my Bass! Later Sweets! FantaZ4U here, AKA Saxaddict ! Oh one other thing, I made the3 mistake of buying a very nice Selmer Glass Reed wallet and it totally ruined reeds after the first use. For over 20 years I've done what you do and just retract the reed some and but a good cap on it. And it worked on all my large Clarinets as well but considering the frequency I had do Double on them, I eventually started using Fibracells. When having that much lumber on stage I got very dry keeping them All warmed. It got worse when the Vocalist found my storage fridge and started lifting them before the stage calls. And Typical we know what happens when singers feel the need to take things. I'd make special stops for a bottled water Lemon Water only to have a Singer take it before they cameras came up. Hard to fix that in orchestras! Chez, do be gentle, First Candy had my heart, but now she has competition!

I have Native American background (not the Television type) so do come get some of these colonials that have been here way too long! Another very Old school hack? To save a gig, I have seen old pros keep a few wine corks in their case, encase they get a slight leak during a set. They would toss then one at a time down the down the bell, till they got time to get a set break. Ever seen that? . Or tried it? We can liberate some wine corks and test it if you like! Give them some new life! It worked for me once and I got to the leak light asap. The theory is it offers some back pressure and stops a warble on the right hand stacks which was the case I had. not much help higher leaks. Just wondering if you have ever seen that. I fould wine corks in a vintage pro horn case as well once. And I have a 10M Lollipop than had a ping in the underslung neck some guys did but I could hever do that to my horn for anything! Hate to have it removed if it actually worked! The hiorn plays so good, I'd not want to change it. when I repad it and restore it. A 1940's Conn 10M tenor, Underslung and Silver!

as a 7th grade concert band tenor sax and alto sax player, i have a really great tone in my opinion and have been told that, but recently my tone on tenor got spotty and i don't know why, any ideas on why this happened or how to prevent it?

These often get bent. It is probably best to take it to a repair shop. Or you can have a little go yourself at opening it up more by gently bending it but be ever so careful! This may seem silly, but you know there are two 8ve valves? So do check over the range of the instrument, the top 8ve key only opens for certain notes. Also, make sure you haven't lost the small piece of rubber on the lever which opens the top 8ve key. That could also cause difficulties! Hope this helps. I wouldnt listen to someone who uses sandpaper ( no matter how fine) on the toneholes as a stopgap measure to address the problem of a sticky closed key. Furthermore, she plunked the collapsed sax stand down the bell, which will dent and scratch the inside of the bell (You could here the clunk as it hit the bottom crook). So forgive me if I just "thumbsdown" you, Barbie girl!

Lipstick on the reed? Yikes! Might as well play 30 seconds after finishing a curry. Some good advice regarding rizla but long term you're better off cleaning yours pads/rims with lighter fuel. It stinks but gets all the crud off. I woudln't start sanding reeds unless absolutely necessary - you're far better off putting the reed on the mouthpiece and pushing your thumb hard into the heart of the reed and wiggling back and forth. This wakes up the dullest reed. Sanding rims? - No! Once the laquer has worn off they will corrode, become uneven and have to be fixed with...sandpaper? Alt top E and F? They sound crap in general, yeah useful at times but not a substitute IMO. You can also play F# using alt F and bis Bb with the middle finger. Horses for courses of course. Sticky keys to check? G#, low C# and the lower octave key opening. When the lower octace key opening sticks it's baffling - can't play the the middle register D-G! Desperate gig solution - baby powder, clean it off after. Use a tiny tub of it and an ear bud. Disagree about pad savers, clean the sax through first though. Like the click finger idea, will have a mess around with that. Thanks for the vid, cheers.
Why not just get your saxaphone fixed instead of taking sand paper to it and being paranoid about sticky keys? Seriously: hit all the keys once before starting your set, if they stick before play, then bring it in for service.
Much like being car-savvy, it's super useful to have some insider knowledge as to how to fix the sax if it plays up. Unfortunately they are essentially machines and do go wrong so good to have a few tactics for repair where needed. You never know when you may need this! Cx

What do you recommend for cleaning the surface of the sax? Should I simply use a cloth or is there some kind of cleaner that you recommend?

Water certainly isn't going to do them any harm but they do need to dry thoroughly in order to avoid rot!

It depends on your water. Flouride can stiffen your reeds, and chlorine will break them down. A quick rinse should be okay, but don't soak them.

I woudln't start sanding reeds unless absolutely necessary - you're far better off putting the reed on the mouthpiece and pushing your thumb hard into the heart of the reed and wiggling back and forth. This wakes up the dullest reed. Sanding rims? - No! Once the laquer has worn off they will corrode, become uneven and have to be fixed with...sandpaper? Alt top E and F? They sound crap in general, yeah useful at times but not a substitute IMO. You can also play F# using alt F and bis Bb with the middle finger. Horses for courses of course. Sticky keys to check? G#, low C# and the lower octave key opening. When the lower octace key opening sticks it's baffling - can't play the the middle register D-G! Desperate gig solution - baby powder, clean it off after. Use a tiny tub of it and an ear bud. Disagree about pad savers, clean the sax through first though. Like the click finger idea, will have a mess around with that. Thanks for the vid, cheers.

Why not just get your saxaphone fixed instead of taking sand paper to it and being paranoid about sticky keys? Seriously: hit all the keys once before starting your set, if they stick before play, then bring it in for service.
Much like being car-savvy, it's super useful to have some insider knowledge as to how to fix the sax if it plays up. Unfortunately they are essentially machines and do go wrong so good to have a few tactics for repair where needed. You never know when you may need this! Cx
