Hi Chez, I would like to say thanks to you for all your advice and tips to all of us who are trying out there on the sax. As for myself, my wife is a gospel singer and we would some day like to do a song together... but that is an ambition for the future. I can do a few licks of songs and know my major scales from memory... I'm trying to do my own version of 'When The Saints Go Marching In'. I have viewed other youtube clips as you do for inspiration. I love this guy's clip of 'When The Saints Go Marching In (Katherine Howell and Steve Ore Youth Camp 2008), and would like to learn a few parts of that version where near the beginning you play the main part of the song and in the middle of the chorus it goes from a high G, A, high G then back to the chorus (I think! lol). Towards the end part of the chorus, he also does an improvisation of a high/low note which sounds really cool. I would be very grateful if you could advise me on the best way to learn that part, but would also understand if you are unable to as I can imagine how busy you are... please keep up the good work!

Thanks Chez. After a 37 year break, I took up saxophone again 11 years ago. I am nothing more than a amateur hack--I play in a community band and private "gigs" at several nursing homes and assisted living centers--but I always try to keep improving. I thoroughly enjoy your videos as they are always very informative, fun and sassy, even if sometimes beyond my abilities at this time (i.e., the "ghost notes").

Hi Chez, great video as always! I've just started the sax (alto, King660, Yamaha 4C, Vandoren Reed 3), been learning on my own for about 1.5 years now mostly from your videos (yeay!).
I have a question on the "effects". For the "twiddles", is it possible to go down a note instead of up (I think I heard pro sax players doing this)? and when should I do either one or the other? Also, I'm having trouble playing the third octave on the Sax, I can barely play F#. I usually need to "ramp" up from D* to F# just to make a sound. Any pointers on this? I would love to be able to "shoot" to F# for that sweet bend on Jubel - Klingande :)
P.S. would also love a tutorial on freestyling on a sax

Did you notice how Chez sounds fantastic and we pick up all the nuances? She can do that thanks to her excellent saxophone setup, eps. the mouthpiece + ligature. Change your mouthpiece to a good quality rubber mouthpiece, larger opening (say 7). Most techniques that demand 1) rapid, 2) subtle and 3) expressive changes in the air stream and diaphragm action demand a mouthpiece that can meet that challenge and deliver all those details. 4C mouthpiece has a narrow opening, it is plastic (plastic does not produce a really good sound), and does not seal reed really well. 4C is more suitable for (uniform tone) classical tone, not for more expressive jazz or pop. Consider a good ligature too.

I use the Neotech Soft Sax Strap and is great
You call it a twiddle. I think it is almost a trill. Just because in high school when I was at a competition I got nicked by the judge on my solo that I let a trill skip by without hitting it quite enough. But I get it how it can be hard to play without just automatically putting in your normal playing skills. One other trick I used to use was sort of backing off the mouthpiece and trilling my tongue in front of the reed, getting a growl sound, along the lines of the solo in Dion's The Wanderer. th-cam.com/video/IkoidwsLXCg/w-d-xo.html

(NB that's the original melody from the record, on this video, on the third phrase Chez plays g*-f*-d*-f*___ )
Just because you have an SBA doesn't make you sound good. Also you don't necessarily need a good sax. It's mostly your mouthpiece that makes you sound good. The sax almost has no impact on your sound.
Better tips:
Transcribe the greats and practice long tones
how can you make a video on "playing like a pro" when ypu can't even film yourself playing the correct notes to a simple melody??
Just saw this video.You have good advice but you speak too quickly and your topic tends to ramble. Slow down and try not to ramble so much. Cheers
tip number one: don't try to sound like this woman. This is the sound of a kid just starting to play in middle school. I've heard middle schoolers have a more mature sound than this.
