Real Z31 guys like to keep these cars a quiet mystery. Had mine and been around Z31s since '99.
Its coming out lol. Video by video
The digital dashes actually rarely "go bad." Over the years the solder Nissan used in the circuit board just kind of shriveled up and pulled away from the contacts. There is a place below the gauges where you could shove a folded up business card and it would come back on. It's a pretty easy fix to remove the gauges and refreshen the solder. I did it a million years ago and it's still working in 2023. If part of your dash goes dark except for one small section, this is likely your problem.
Oh thanks for this help!
Thank you so much for that! Gonna try it. Have a 84 50th anniversary 300zx and have had trouble with all of the dashboard lighting
I've heard this same thing elsewhere.
I've had my 86 z31 for 32yrs and is a great car and needless to say I love it.
Wow dude! Plan to keep it for a lifetime?
I have my 1986 zx Turbo with GLL package since 1986.. 37 th year of service
Finally people are starting to notice these cars!
Yeah man! I kinda want one now lol
there’s no parts anywhere 😢
I got one and I go to autozone to order parts
No. This is not good. This is going to drive up the prices and make inexperienced young drivers want one to drift them into ditches and make them disappear, the fate that most japanese sports cars have suffered already
Damn. I bought my 86 300ZX for $900 back in January of 2010. Now I see that they have grown in value. Unfortunately I longer have it.
Also with rust. Another spot that is typically for repair is the frame rail underneath the brake booster and the under frame. The z31 has a weaker frame and there are specific jack points on the car. So expect frame damage beyond rust
Oh thats good info, thanks!
can confirm. mine was just starting to pit from the rust so i was able to wire wheel it all, repaint with rust converter primer plus engine bay enamel, and spray frame rust encapsulator on the inside to stop any that started internally (they put a drain hole there on the frame too smh)
Z31 is the best z imo. I currently have 3! My 84T I’ve had for 8 years is getting a built motor and big turbo. Also picked up a 87 turbo and 87na recently in restoring/fixing as they’ve been sitting for 20 years.
Good video overall. 🎉
Thanks you! Looks like you have a lot of work on your hands!
Definitely but it’ll all be worth it
wanna sell me one i’ve been looking into getting one
@@greentonguegaming5199 at the moment they aren’t available.
got one for my first car i use it as a daily only has 99k miles! Everyone at school love it.
Damn dude that’s a sick daily!
Gentlemen who played doc Hudson in cars raced the Z31 in SCCA competitions and was a great Z car driver
the facelift model started in 87 in america, the 86 model also has the facelift's wider fenders, but has the pre facelift front end and taillights
Oh thanks for clarifying!
I have a red 86NA T-Top 5 speed that I am considering letting go as I just bought a 2024 Performance Z. 3rd owner car with 180k no rips or tears and in good shape. I drove it yesterday in warm weather with the non-leaking t-tops out. This was an informative video! Thanks!
Just purchased an 87 Z31NA and I was so impressed at how refined the car is. It's definitely a luxury GT sports coupe
Just got mine a couple of months ago and i couldn’t be happier. A dream come true. Identical to the one on 3:55 but MANUAL.
Dang man nice buy!
Picking up a 1986 300zx turbo this Friday for $1,800. Been sitting since 2007. T tops and told never have leaked. Wish me luck
so how did that work out for you?
I remember looking at one of these at the junk yard to scavenge for parts on my 86. I got disappointed that it was a slick top and I thought it was just a clean weld job. Didn't know they were rare
Well now you know for the next time visiting the junk yard😂
Informative vid! Bought my 85 used with 35,000 in 1989. Have 219000 on her now with zero mods. . .buuuut have the rust under spare tire (even tho AZ car) and am struggling with vacuum leak, so no a/c. Drove her to work today with t tops off. She lives in Montana now, so only summer driver. . .garaged otherwise.
Check the vacuum hose that goes thru the firewall on the passenger side between the battery and engine. It's for feeding vacuum to the dash mechanicals. Where it makes the bend, it gets heat and cold hardened and breaks or leaks. Pull it out about 2" or so and see it's condition. Also, sign up for membership on a Z31 board. Like Z31 builds and mods. Good luck!
My grandpa had this, he unfortunately sold his because it was constantly getting into issues like car jackings, accidents and eventually got totaled by a semi while parked. I hope I can find one again for him before he dies
Your grandpa sounds like a playboy. Mine only drove tractors.
@@Berd_Dog my grandpa fought in Vietnam so I guess you are pretty close
I bought my 84 in Feb of 1984 and still have and love to today
Wow! Thats awesome. I hope you keep it forever.
@@hakosan86 That is my plan! I have 172k, rebuilt the tranny but engine has never been out, did the timing belts at 60k or 10 years, suspension completely reworked, stereo completley replaced out and still can drive it like I stole it!
@@jeffleeds914 thats amazing
I have a gym buddy has one of these. It's an 87 Z31, red, t tops, non-turbo. 37,000 miles, all original. It looks show room quality. He is rumbling about selling it on, as all it does is sit in his garage, covered up its whole life. If I didn't already have an old classic muscle car, I'd consider trying to buy it from him.
Even Nissan themselves forgets about the z31. In promos for the the new Z it shows all the older generation Z’s except the z31
I've owned 4 of these beautiful retrofuture beasts. Unfortunately i have none now due to various circumstances. The last one I had got stolen! The previous owner modded the heck out of it and it was strong as HELL. I don't have official numbers but it must have been over 300hp easily
1985 Turbo was my very first car. It was the best car.
A 3000gt guide wouod be amazing ngl
Ill do that man! Thanks!
just got a Z31 from 86 and the phone is my favorite part, pepole always have a good first reaction when they notice
Great video man. I loved these in the 90s as a kid and still want one😄
Great video! One issue I’d like to point out that’s super common, the seals just being there mirrors on the door fall apart. Since they are frameless doors they can and most likely will leak. Oh also the blue mist metallic is available single tone. That’s the color of the one I’m building but the clear coat is trash 😂
I have a 85 thunder black and aspen gold metallic Z, im restoring it right now. Needed a whole engine rebuild and a ton of other work but itll be drivable soon
Nice man! I can’t wait to see it running!
Love the representation as a zed 31 owner we don't get enough for some reason
Also the Canadian anniversary edition were a little rarer and numberd 1-300 with a medallion in the glove box ohh and ya can't forget to mention the banana it's infamous in the community as the only yellow car painted by a dealership before being sold
Also make sure your MAF is working properly....and check to make sure your digital dash is working flawlessly.
I loved my 87. Had a 2+2 auto that i bought for $1000 with 160k at that time. Had the squat/ tire wear issue but never got around to replacing the bushings. I had that throttle stick issue with the rubber piece. Thought my car was going to blow up haha. Theres not a lot of aftermarket parts for this chassis though. Everyone focuses on the z32
I own 1987 for 15 years now great cars if you take the time to restore and mod 👏🏻 still fav Z car
I sooo feel in love with my 86’ Z back in high school graduated in 02’ and I missed her 6 years ago my step dad scrapped her… I found 2 for sale and got lucky to asked for a trade for my 03 suburban…. This Friday can’t get here fast enough
I’m so excited for you!!!
How did it go? lol
Just bought an 87 Turbo off my brother in law. Thinking of doing the build on my TH-cam channel since there are so few builds out there.
That would be awesome!
I just got an 86 naturally aspirated! Ill throw some videos up too if I have time. Cant find an OEM or poly rear diff mount anywhere, probably going to need to machine one myself
my uncle had a blue one up till like 2004. i remember seeing it when i was like 6. Sadly he totaled it and almost never talked about it.
An ultimate 80s car. Especially the loaded Turbo with full digital displays.
I so wanted that as a kid, and yet now when I can afford cars like this I can’t find any!
You can take a vg30e do a na2t build using z32 vg30det forged internals go to pucker factory fab and buy their turbo log manifold and down pipe. Go to cx racing get their intercooler/radiator kit. Nistune tuning daughter chip in the 86+ ecus will give you access to fuel maps, timing and more. Head valve and port job, schnieder cams sells good cam grinds for these. And with a gutted intake. The transmission is the limiting factor. Get a fs5r30a trans from a z32 or 87+ turbo z. They are almost bullet proof. The engine with a forged bottom end can handle 900+hp and there actually is a good amount of aftermarket support for these. S13 coilovers fit with adapters and a welder adapters sold by rt pros. They sell lsd's for the r200 diff from Kraaz. Do all that it is spendy but worth it for a z31. You'll have a 800-900hp car all day long you could go msd but this way retains the stock ecu also godzilla raceworks sells a bunch of usefull stuff such as fuel rails and injectors

The 1988 Shiro edition Z31 is too cool!
100% agree!
I believe I have the ‘85 two tone black and gold colour combo. Paint is really rough but can still clearly see the gold.
Sick color combo!
Had one with T tops, and could never stop it from leaking. Smelled like a swamp the entire time I owned it . . .
I own a z31, it's a great car, just feels super heavy when turning. It's not light weight like the s13's. But it's still a great cwr
Try s12’s, same era but lighter car, SE trim also came with a VG30E
probably because the power steering isn't working
@@sockahcock no, It has hella body roll and the cat just doesn’t feel light and nimble like my mr2
I had one back in the day, 1986. just like the red on you have on the video.....
My brother gifted me the 86 NA, all i need to do is fix the cosmetic issues and maybe add a turbo on.
i have a shiro special and another white 88 turbo, they’re definitely very special
6:00 rust near the rear crossmember mounts is a big one
Also check for oil leaks, to replace an oil pan gasket you either pull the engine or drop the subframe
Thanks for the extra tips man! Ill heart it so everyone sees it
I’ve known a little about these cars but I’m seriously looking at them now
I have a 86 2+2 GLL that im going for a world record NA build.... VG30E is very underated so is the VG30ET but the VG30E all motor ive seen make 400+ hp.... cant wait till mine is all fixed up.... s14 Subframe swap soon and then putting on some 2009 GS460 Chrome Rims on her

Love my z, currently In the shop for powersteering and power window motors.
Nice! Hope it doesn’t stay in there for too long lol
I’m nervous, I love this car, but I live in a studio apartment with no private parking. I’d need to save to upgrade to a new home with a covered garage before I can even start to seriously look for one of these cars to buy. By then they could be much more expensive
I had one as my first car but no matter how much money we put into it the misfire would not go away
Dang man that sucks! Are you still dealing with the issue or did you sell it?
@@hakosan86 we sold it after putting 2 grand into it lol
@@hakosan86 1988 2+2
Just an FYI: Warp Stabilizer and Speed can't be used on same clip.
I am helping a friend get one going after it sat for over a decade. Now, I want one.
Get one! My friend did the same thing lol. I was looking for a 4runner and then he ended up buying one I didn’t want so now we both have one.
@@hakosan86 car guys are not good for each other's bank accounts
THE BRAKE LIGHTS....IVE BEEN BATTLEING THIS FOR YEARS AND NEVER FOUND ANYTHING ABOUT IT
I have a Z32, need to get the underbody fixed so I can actually get it to pass safety, then I can actually legally drive it when the weather gets bettter.
Good info and real decent z's
Aye they made some with the Rb20det engine race bred🌀♨🌴
Blessup...
These are cool cars . Along with the z32
Yeah they are!
86' was the last year of the Datsun Z31 and 87-89 is the Nissan z31
Z31 is not cheap in my country, a beat down rust bucket barely driveble costs above 15.000 , a good one is around 30.000
what currency?
@@joeyjohnsonson4341 Euro, haven't checked in a long time but I believe it amounts a little bit above us dollars like 32.000 or 33.000, last time I checked the exchange rate was like 2 years ago.
@@joeyjohnsonson4341 Euro, i think at it's currency exchange it might be like 29700 dollars as I mentioned this is for good ones
You can get an imported one for less but the tax to legalize it it's not worth the trouble it's rigged like that, unless it's a newer car like 5 years old.
I have a maroon 85 NA and I love it! it gets like 20 mpg.
Just got a 85 z31 as my first project/fun car
Nice man! How do you like it so far?
I owned an 85 & it caught on fire 5 times. Always carry an extinguisher in a 300zx.
Damn that sucks lol
@hakosan86 that was what the fuel rail recall was about.
I had a black and gold 1985 turbo. I’m guessing Canada got more than the US. Unless I ended up with the one!
I owned three I hope you got the cash for Z money pit! 💰 🔥
Yep! I had a 85 and nothing was cheaper than 500 bucks and it was issue after issue. Even though it was fun to drive I had to get rid of it.
@Cmobley_ Yeah, ppl think I'm hating on the car, although I loved it. If I hated the car, I wouldn't have owned three of them, lol. It's all facts, though. The car will nickel and dime you to death from Maf, to rack a pinions, alternators, belts, clutch installments, AT Trans cleaning, motor mounts. I did overhauls on my old Z's, and I know them in and out. I may own an A33 6sp maxima, but I started out in a Z31T and still love my memories of driving them.
Plymouth laser is underrated too. I know its the same as eclipse and talon but everyone who reveiws dsm family skips it. I think in RS package is the best looking 1g dsm.
I should do a video on the laser! Great idea!
I've got the Z32 and theres a Z31 collecting dust across the street from me and I want to buy it really bad.
When brakes fail turn engine off just don’t lock the wheel.
I'm buying a two tone blue and black z31 you sure it's the only one ever made?
Watch for firewall rot especially around battery, spare tire well rot, t top rot, frame rail rot, hatch rot, and tail light rot.
Owned an 85 and 87
I have a video on my channel that can prove it. Also there are grounds on the back of the analog dash itself that can go bad
Just got an ‘86 turbo manual swap. Another spot is underneath master cylinder and corresponding spot in wheel well. Had to weld in a little patch
I’ve been gifted an 88 by a family member and it needs a motor, how hard is it to locate a motor for this year?
I have a 86 t in hot red. It looks just like the one in the video.
Nice man! U got a beautiful car!
@@hakosan86 thanks!
I'm talking to a dude trying to buy one but he responds so slow and it's giving me anxiety because I WANT IT lol
I had just picked up a red 86 2+0 for 500 dollars. Engine threw a belt so probably need a new one buuut. Overall not horrible
Do you think a 6’1 person would fit comfortably?
Absolutely. However, watch for the T-top covers, as they sag over time.
1:36 am I tweaking or is the car bouncing
Could you go over the difference in the Fairlady Z31s and the 300zx z31s?
So are the v6 engines better then the inline 6?
Thank you
Most people do A/C deletes on these. Especially for bigger boost applications etc.
That would be hellish where I live
how can you you check if the fuel injector recall has been done?
ive been trying to buy one for 3 years! been searching for a 50th anniversary and just cannot find one thats in good shape and not over 30k
Yeah man they are getting hard to come by now….
@@hakosan86 pain 😔
The 87 model redesign the tail lights. Hard to find
next on the list is the nissan s12
Heyy my car is the thumbnail ❤
Nice man! U got a beautiful car!
Had an 88 have a 84 i took the vg out of and put in my 1600 roadster
Gotta say 87-89 z31 is the better looking z31s
1:42 damn 1656hp and only 170ft lbs of torque. What a shame lol
Going to look at a black and gold two tone 85 turbo they want 7,995$ Canadian for it. Canadian spec
Great vid
I literally have pretty much the same wrap on mine 1989 z31 as the car on 1:11 ... Where did you find that clip pls ? Want to see some more shots of that
All the video links are in the description, im not sure exactly which link it is though
had one, thanks!
My dad bought two of them 7 years ago and he’s giving me one of them 😫😫😫
Here in Spain, you can find them between 18.000€ and 25.000€….. its late for us here 😢😢😢
Best Z by far
Your info is a little off. But I won’t blame you for it lol
You didn’t go thru all the colors?
No haha that would take all day
@@hakosan86 I thought fs you’d talk about the white non shiro edition. Anyways still a great video regardless and very helpful
I’m thinking about buying a 85 turbo it’s a 50th addition needs vacuum work and a new fuel pump. Do u think it’s worth $2800???
Yeah I definitely think its worth it
@@hakosan86 it would be my second car I’m only 15. I still gotta ask my grandpa about it.😂
2+2 are harder to get parts for
Thanks for the info!
@@hakosan86 yup! The chassis is a bit longer so some parts are different in length!
I'm going to sell my 87 300zx with 125K. You think i can get $4500?
i have z32 tt but i love z31 lift '88
what about the dark gray
I don't think it's underrated. It just falls into that category of 80s model bad, 90s model good. Same can be said about the 944, mk3 supra, aw11 MR2, fc rx7, 1st gen eclipse, Silvia s12 etc,
Thats why I think it’s underrated compared to the 90’s model. Its more reliable, depending on the opinion of the person it might look better, and is cheaper but everyone buys the z32.
@@hakosan86 I mean yes but in general no. It's just 90s rose tint glasses. Once that market is all used up you'll see people go back to 80s cars and 00s cars naturally.
"Cheap" for whom?
I bought a 1987 Red 300zx 2+2 with 89,000 original miles always garage for 6000.00 dollars
That sounds like an awesome deal!
