Excellent video! I 100% agree book Benedict is a monster, which is such a disappointment because he’s my favorite on the show. Seeing how much the show changed Kanthony’s story (for the better in my opinion) I have the utmost faith that they will do the same for Benedict & Sophie. Give us a season examining class disparity and privilege, with a dash of fairytale love, and sweet, romantic Benedict finding his courage to marry against society’s expectations.

You make some very good points about Benedict. I still felt like they had sparks between them and Sophie was the coolest character. However, I felt Colin was much ruder to Penelope in his book.

Oh definite sparks and I still love him and Sophie. Just definitely read it differently at 30 than 17. I also think the show is on top of a lot of those weaknesses as I’ve seen them fleshing Benedict out. And you are 100% right on Colin. When I was a teen I had remembered that being my favorite and when I reread I was like 😬. Very excited to see what the show does with both.

@@bookishmelody I never read the books as a teen but I found the audiobooks really fun to listen to. Despite that, I never enjoyed listening to Colin and Penelope's story - it was so slow and boring.

The show Benedict is so different from the book. Most of us love what the show is giving us, but the books give us a little bit of whiplash. As soon as I had finished the book I realized it was a Cinderella story and as much as I love Cinderella in movies not so much in book form. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on Colin are.

Maybe in the show they will to the following: she gets kicked out by the evil stepmother and ends up working in one of the bridgerton houses or other people of the ton that the family is friendly with. Benedict goes to this house (unexpectedly) and get sick. He doesn't realise it's her but falls in love with her, although he fights it because he is still waiting for the masked women. Something like that? I think the prison situation won't be in it but that Violet will get a nice role.

I do like this book, but I definitely found myself thinking about how they might change it for the show to make Benedict less of a problem.
Also if anyone have any suggestions for similar novels less problematic. I would love it!

PS on the show Benedict seems very open, accepting and kind. If not a little lacking in depth. I hoping the show writers will fix some of these book issues

I definitely think they’ll fix the book issues. This was definitely one of my favorites in the series as a teen so it’s interesting to just view it through a new lens, especially when romance moves so quickly, while still remembering what appealed. I’ll think on other suggestions but off the top of my head A Kiss at Midnight by Eloisa James is another Cinderella retelling-though it’s been a while since I read!

Oh thank you so much for putting this out. I felt you placed my exact emotions into words. I read this book because Benedict was my favorite, and I wanted to punch him so many times. I stopped reading the novel and threw it away only to pick it up again 3 days later to see if Sophie whacked properly over the head. It had made me so upset. I saw so much of my self in her. Don’t even get me started on Colin. Such sadness. Poor Pen. 10 years he makes her wait.🤯

  • @ZackRekeSkjell

This sums up a lot of my thoughts about Benedict as well! Also, in the books Sophie doesn’t give him any reason to believe she has agreed to any of the things he says or threatens to do to her. He’s just awful!

    Hey Melody,
This is two years in the future 😂June 2024. After the end of Colin’s book: Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.
Please do an addendum to this video on us being able to talk about theories/ ideas/ suggestions on how the interpretation of this book will go.
Since it clearly will not be an adaptation of the novel.
Quite frankly, I’m hoping he is next instead of Eloise. I feel she and Francesca need one more season to grow.
Makes me wonder if we will get an updated dialogue on the novel and what are your thoughts on the casting of the main leads once we know they are officially confirmed by Shondaland and Netflix.
How you think they will make subtle changes upon the Orginal material.
I feel he is truly Prince Charming Energy here and seeing him have the chance to be mystified is great.
Lady Danbury comedic chops are great in this book.
The flirting is back and we get a masquerade ball.
The talk of Sophie in class being a ladies maid and love child aka bastard child.
Sophie is as hard on her societal perspective as Penelope.
    Sophie stand up 😂
Anyhow can’t wait for a live or discussion on this🎉🎉🎉

I adore Sophie this definitely won’t be the last we discuss ☺️ Hopefully I can get a better sense of where they’re steering Benedict in Part 2 of Season 3

at the end, Benedict gave two offers to Sophie: 1 his mistress and 2 his wife (although this was an statement/implied it due to him calling her his fiancé)
Also, i didn't like how he push her to be something she does not want, but at the end she's not strong enough and have seccczzz. then again she refuses, then He realize he loves her.
Then Violet put on table another offer: support him if he marries a girl unsuitable.
then Benedict decides to resign from his initial offer, and finally realize and understands he must, should, can and will offer his hand in marriage to Sophie.
i re read the book twice in 1 week hahaha but kept re reading some scenes, and you realise at the end of the book, besides being a love story or being the Benedict's book, it's more than that!
it's about how men, in those times, were living charming lives and were not aware/blind of his actions and decisions (some may say ignored it, and yes they may choose to ignore those mistress propotitions but we have to put our head on those times, where men and women were raise in some special and yet different way from each one and from this century). How until the end, after he knows the truth and understands his own life, is when he matures about this topic mistress-unsuitable-love thing.
i think is one of the best books of Bridgerton series cause give us a point of view of men in those times.
for me Benedict is a new-modern Mr Rochester version (from jane eyre, have you read it?)
Mr Rochester is also a dream man, but with a lie that hurts really bad. He also kind-of offers to Jane to be his mistress, and even when he proposes, he clearly is using her for her innocence and cuteness. Just another man getting a woman to please his desires.
p.s. Jane Eyre is one of my most favourite books, and of course, An Offer from a Gentleman is my favourite book right now from Bridgerton series. as well Benedict my favourite character, and how to not have a crush on Luke Thompson!?!? hahaha

I like the video, you are completely right about book Benedict. I hope in the series once they get to his story., that they change that. I hope they continue to make him his charming self, and take away that complete jerk that he is throughout the book away. And makes their story more loving.

After watching the first season of the show, i read the ABC bridgerton books. I was surprised with benedict’s book cos his character feels different from the show. By the end, i could not understand why sophie would still want to be with him 😅 i do love the scenes with violet and benedict and his story is more engaging than colin’s. Still, he was so condescending to sophie, and i could not root for them as a couple.

  • @orsikocs

In Benedict's defence he asked her I think 2 or 3 more times and the reason the scenes felt pushy because Sophie was written in a way that she didn't really say no she was always described as 'my answer is yes but I can't '. And so Benedict literally stops asking after and stops bothering her because he's thinking marriage and that's a huge decision.
I think if you really like someone and the other person clearly likes u bad some chasing is understandable. But hey idk anything

Thank you so much for this!!!!I'm glad that more and more people are seeing how problematic Benedict is in his book. Like you said, he's acting just like Cavender, and nothing can justify that! He was even physically violent when he pulled her ankle and pin her to the ground in the lake scene!
I'm curious what did you think of him in S2, because to me, Benedict is amazing in the show. He has flaws that I would love to explore in his season, but I truly cannot see him pulling any of the shit book!Benedict pulls. I think the writers have done a tremendous job with him.

The Bridgerton books were published in the late 90s/ early 2000s and, unfortunately, none of the siblings have queer romances. We could still see the show play with this. Regardless, I definitely enjoy how the show has been building out Benedict’s character.

But that doesn't mean I'm not attracted to guys. People do the same to me too. They think I'm a stud from like the first impression before I clarify that I am attracted to men. So glad they gave her Theo as a love interest

I'm reading this right now and I had to come here to see if I was the only one annoyed by it. Honestly though, I think I'm more annoyed by the author because I feel like Benedict could have been written differently. All I could think while reading is "this is coercion". I'm also really bothered by the scene where Sophie was saved. I really believe there could have been other ways to allow Sophie and Benedict to meet again. What would have happened to Sophie was a huge issue but for me it felt as if it wasn't treated as seriously as it really is

Absolutely! This is definitely one of the books that shows it’s age the most for me, and the discrepancy between how I remembered it reading as a teen and how I experienced it as an adult was vast. I like to think it shows how far we’ve come in historicals in the last 20 years, while also recognizing we have ways to go. Thank you for your thoughts!

Finally someone who doesn't ignore this very very problematic behavior. Benedict behaves so disrespectfully towards Sophie, it's not a healthy relationship. The condescension is painful, and Benedict behaving like a child and then expecting of Sophie to accept that he is in charge ... like, no. This is abusive, not romantic. I don't ship it at all.

I can not get through it.. i find him so horrible and pushy. Just like you, I can't get over the fact that he puts Sophie in the same situation that he saved her from (sex being a part of the deal of mistress) I just get so frustrated waiting for a true realization, and it never comes. Which makes him only an unsympathetic jerk. This 2nd son thing does not come through and does not seem connected to his bad behavior. This is sad, up until the blackmail part he was tolerable and I was rooting for Sophie and the mystery girl/maid dynamic
