I honestly feel like the reason why Daphne's relationship felt off is that she was a kid and he wasn't. She was innocent and clueless, he wasn't. It's hard to have that "pining for each other" level of chemistry and sexual tension if the two characters aren't emotionally and mentally on the same level. The whole point of this season is that Anthony are Kate have met their respective matches.
I didn't feel invested in Daphne and Simon's relationship and I couldn't point my finger to what bothered me but you put it into words perfectly. The experience imbalance between the two does make it harder to root for them.
@@IAmDasani Kate was a lot more older than daphne while she was also a lot more educated on different topics as it’s revealed to us due to her teaching her sister and being basically her mentor. Being ‘experienced’ doesn’t fall down unto if you’ve had s3x
I actually loved that the show doesn’t make it a point to be so “WE HAVE REPRESENTATION” and instead gave us a world where people just are, and it’s totally normal. That’s how our world should have always been.
Yes, they definitely improved this aspect compared to season one and I really like this season even though the first one was a hate watch because of all the reasons Mina talked about :)
I totally agree, it wasn’t “forced”. That is one thing I really love about this show, you almost forget about the color of their skin. It’s a breath of fresh air.
Also, can we get a hooray for the makeup department? I don't think I've ever seen makeup highlight the beauty of dark skin so well on screen. I've pointed out white under eyes and ill-matched foundation on too many movies to count, but Kate's makeup was the best out of every single person on the show.
this is such a good point! I love how they didn't try to make them lighter, which happens ALL the time in South Asian media and bad Western stuff. And the use of kohl was just so good (especially considering the white characters don't generally wear eyeliner, but it's historically accurate for the Indians)
YES! I was so so so enthralled by how good the make up was. When I watched the last up I immediately went to twitter to praise the beautiful make up. I read the colors were Pat McGrath but I want to know what brand the foundation was.
As a brown girl, Kate is the Indian 'disney princess' that I needed! Every time the Sharma's came on screen, you could see all the Indian influences on the characters, be it their accents, their costuming, or even stuff they mentioned or did in passing. Like that scene where Kate was oiling Edwina's hair and chatting, that is such an Indian 'mother-daughter' pastime. Also, as a South Indian girl who grew up in the west, hearing these girl's from an English show, who I identify with so strongly, call their mum "amma" was so weirdly emotional for me. It was the first time I really understood why representation is so important, especially in our multicultural world. It makes me happy to know that young brown girls these days, who are growing up outside South Asia, have so many women (real or fictional) they can look up to and are able to feel like their seen, like they belong. edit: guys, I don't think bridgerton is what you should look up to for historical accuracy
I could not stop staring at her perfect face either omg. I loved her distain for the English tea too lol, growing up Japanese I also understand the "what is this" reaction to English tea lololol
i saw someone on tiktok mention how their accents would fluctuate but i noticed that it was mostly like a “code switching” thing. their hindi accents were more obvious when they were in private, and they sounded more english around english people. if that was the creative intention i think it’s an awesome little thing to pick up. i probably wouldn’t have noticed it if i didn’t relate
The only reason Anthony keeps reminding everyone that he's a quote and quote "a gentleman" is because he's probably trying to convince and remind even himself that he better act like a gentleman and to stop himself from doing anything dishonorable.
Very much. Anthony is very aware of what society expects of him and needs to live up to. The other Bridgertons don't need to keep the family legacy going. Another difference between him and Benedict is Anthony sleeps around with ladies of the night. Benedict has casual relationships.
im convinced anthony's character wasn't rewritten, just recontextualized through his own perspective this season instead of daphne's. it allows for more complexity to shine through. he was presented as aloof in season one bc thats how he comes across to others while in this season his aloofness is in part cause by trauma over his father's death and him being obsessed with his family affairs, business and standing in society. his negative traits that led him into trouble in season one are also here in season two, they just seen more endearing or played up for comedic effect rather than a point contention (being headstrong and dismissing daphne's concerns over promises her to that weird dude vs. fencing with his brothers and discussing edwina and kate).
I like this take, that each season is largely in the POV of its main lead. S1 Anthony makes more sense once we know how he views love and responsibility.
I am torn about Anthony. I think in the first season he was just a rake, enjoying life and not thinking about the future, just doing his duties for the family while also not accepting he is not prepared to be head of the house when it comes to his siblings. He clashes with Daphne and their mother a couple times, even says to Simon that he doesn't need to marry because he has brothers. But his relationship with the opera singer (can't think of her name) made him grow up. She helped him grow up and realize that he can't just go around and do what he pleases, he's set in his ways and his role in society. And at the end of the season he finally accepts this and for me that's the personality shift we got at the start of season 2. He's ready to accept his role in society as the Viscount and therefore marry. He's intent on finding a good match, while also continuing to be a rake. He continues to visit prostitutes until he meets Kate. And then He chooses Edwina because he's looking for a wife who fits his list, not because he's looking for love.
@@buchbummelant8980 Agreed this is what I was thinking in the begining of season 2 and the talks with him and Violet in both seasons really cemented that to me.
The reason why Kate was apprehensive about telling her family about the deal with the 'Sheffields' was that Edwina would've married the first guy who showed any interest in her just to please both sides of the family and Kate wanted her to go into society without that pressure, genuinely trying to find true love.
Yes, because Kate knew her sister would feel obligated to fulfill that "duty" of securing her family's financial future rather than prioritizing her own self, if her sister knew about it. And, as the older sister, Kate wanted to spare her little sister from that so shouldered all of that responsibility herself. And she didn't tell her mother, because the second season had very strong themes of grief making people check out of life and become bordering on nonfunctional; so, much like Anthony took charge of his own family's affairs after his father's death rather than being allowed to grieve too, so too did Kate...only Anthony was forced into by default of being the oldest living male, while Kate just voluntarily chose to assume that role because of who she is and also because she felt as if she had to earn her place within her family or somehow repay her family for not treating her poorly just for having been a stepchild to her sister's mother, like she felt as if she should do everything for her family and then some because somehow she never personally felt as if her place within the family was ever entirely fully deserved or secured or whatever if she didn't(not because of anything her family themselves ever did or said to her but more just because of the outside society around them). I thought that was actually both shown and told fairly well, in the series, myself! 😊
@@jaginaiaelectrizs6341 YEESSS!! My thoughts exactly. This is exactly what my sister and I discussed. I'm the eldest child in the family and I so relate to KATE and Anthony. YES, to both of them. Because I'm asian and if something happens to my parents, I would be like Anthony. Taking on the responsibility of the parents but I would also see myself in Kate in the way she wanted Edwina to find true love. Kate having the feeling to earn her place in the family is due to the fact that she is not Mary's daughter. It happens to adopted kids, it happens to this kind of family dynamic. OVERCOMPENSATION. And it was fairly shown in the series. You will understand both Kate and Anthony based on how overprotective they were of their family and sibling/s but in a way that's also a bit self destructive because it wasn't healthy. My professor once told me that it's not my responsibility to keep the family together, it was parents'. But when your parents are in shambles, you TRY to act mature and a grown up even though you are not yet there and it sometimes turns out wrongly.
I too loved that they're not shying away from changing Julia Quinn's writing. I understand that this won't please the book's fans very much, but there's no denying that the quality of the narrative has increased by 200%.
I am a fan of the books AND a fan of the series and I actually quite like the differences. Hard to explain, but it's sort of like following two parallel lives in action sometimes. Although I did find that books give a bit more context to some events than we see on screen.
@@baidykle1 i like to observe this differences too, even if I'm not really a fan of the books. But yes, some details are getting lost, because Julia focuses almost only in the main couple and the series is trying to estabilish a whole universe. It does feel a bit rushed sometimes.
Right?! Like, I watched 7 episodes and then I had to travel, so I was kinda busy. I was talking on the phone with a friend who’s seen the show and read the books and I asked her “please, don’t give me any spoilers…but do they end up together?”. She said yes and I giggled. GIGGLED!
honestly, like i haven't cared for romance in most shows i've watched in so long. somehow this season of this show of all things did it for me. everytime they were on screen i was like "ok now kith" 😭
I agree I watch season one just once , season two 30 times daphne and Simon for me was no chemistry I did not even go back a second time to watch season one and I tried a second time and stopped at episode 4 bored
I truly believe the intense tension and 'will they? won't they?' back and forth between the couple in S2 is much sexier than the explicit sex scenes in S1. I mean, c'mon, you are the bane of my existence and the object of all my desires??? I'M FAINTING.
That is EXACTLY how I felt. You said that perfectly. Because I have friends who were expecting more scenes like that, but for me, it was the enjoyable "frustration" of "when will it happen" that made the tension so much better and enjoyable to watch.
Daphne and Simon's relationship always felt so lust-based to me. Season 2 was so great because when the couple finally got together, it felt EARNED. All that tension and yearning had viewers just waiting for them to finally kiss!
I felt the opposite tbh. I felt the lust between Anthony and Kate (it was laid on pretty thick), but I never got the love. Whereas Daphne and Simone, even though there was lust there too, they established a friendship, before getting together.
@@AGEE_95 yeah people forget daphne and simon were good friends for about 3 episodes before they got married. that's probably because of the series adding so many sex scenes after their marriage though. after that it was all just about them having sex and daphne "fixing him" to want to have kids with her. although i do disagree about anthony and kate. you may have gotten that impression from their chemistry being off the charts when they look at eachother, or them not being friends. but the love was definitely there. their similarities and what brought them together was shown in a more subtle way, in contrast to simon literally spelling it all out in front of the queen in season 1.
Rather odd thing to say, considering the series revealed them becoming friends before Simon got cold feet and backed away out of fear of falling for Daphne. That happened around Episodes 3 and 4, by the way.
@@KC-cd9ld Well...no. I woudn't say that, because it wasn't just spelled out to the audience. Simon just confirmed what was already shown and well-developed. I don't think that Kate and Anthony having that one thing in common of being the eldest sibling with too many responsibilities, equates to love. It wasn't enough to justify it, for me. Majority of the time all the two of them did was breath heavily in each other's faces and eye-fuck. To me, that's not a good showcase of real romantic chemistry. They did have good chemistry, it just wasn't utilized well.
@@AGEE_95 i didn't necessarily feel the same, there was no clear development or indication of simon wanting her to "be his wife" like he claimed to the queen. in fact, he has proved time and time again he wanted no wife. it was quite contradictory. their friendship was shown properly, but the romantic feelings hardly. not that it's bad that they were friends before. i think their relationship ended up working but it had a lot of flaws that were never addressed. i see what you mean about kate and anthony, but again i disagree. it wasn't just the fact that they had that in common, but the competition and spirit that kate brought out of him. she was the only one seeing through his bs, constantly challenged him so much that it made him question all his motives and goals which was shown very clearly. i personally find that a better explanation for falling in love than "we were friends / liked eachother's company" which is very vague. i totally understand why he fell for her. why kate fell in love with him though wasn't totally explored, but then again neither were daphne's feelings for simon. their marriage was even based on a white lie on simon being dishonest with her about not wanting to have children.
I’m so glad they decided to represent DARK SKIN SOUTH ASIAN WOMEN. Dark skin is looked at as an ugly/masculine thing all over the world, so seeing a dark skin women being desired/ a main love interest is incredible. I’m not South Asian, but seeing a woman with a dark completion being a female lead love interest is so healing and just amazing.
As a darker Mexican girl I wholeheartedly agree. I’m in love with Simone Ashley’s acting anyways but I think she really added so much to this season, it had me 1000x more hooked than last season
AND featured in a way that was completely flattering and beautiful and enviable. I'm so sick of seeing gorgeous dark skinned actresses on screen with the worst, unflattering makeup, hair that isn't treated right, dressed in colors that don't suit their complexions. If anything, this show is commendable for clearly making the effort to feature everyone equally beautifully, and making sure they all look their best.
To add to this I loved that the pinning felt equal if not more from Antony rather than Kate doing all the pinning and chasing as if he was the only prize.
i considered the edwina-anthony-kate triangle more like an “impossible love” trope rather than a love triangle and it kept me at the edge of my seat! at some point i genuinely thought the season was not going to have a happy ending, this season was so good
It had definitely more the feeling of an impossible love than a true triangle. They also did a great job in letting you know Anthony and Kate were meant to be but at the same time not knowing if they were brave enough to overcome their issues and finally be together at the end.
It wasn't really either a true triangle or a true impossible-love situation, in my opinion. Because everything keeping them apart was entirely of their own devising, and not even by default of clashing personalities really, especially not whenever they were actually just letting themselves be themselves; like, he absolutely did not have to ever propose to her sister at all, he wasn't betrothed to her sister against his will when they were babies or anything like that-he simply intentionally did that to himself even though he didn't have to, just because he didn't want to ever be with someone he loved because he never wanted to possibly have to live through devastating heartbreak like his mother did. And he wasn't even remotely genuinely pulled in two directions, at all, not even by familial duty because he literally could have chosen anyone to assume the duties of the lady of the family/house; even the younger sister herself didn't really have actual feelings for him, I don't think, so much as she really just had feelings or hopes/dreams for all the things that she imagined might or wanted to build between them in time after marriage(But she never even bothered to ask him if he also had any hope or intention for any of those things to develop between them ever..she just assumed he did simply because he was looking to marry and have babies). But perhaps that was just me. idk. 🤔 🤷♀️ Lol
Ikr? they literally switched the final situation to a happy one in the last 12 minutes of the last episode. I remember checking how much time there was left of the episode. There were only 12 minutes left, and Kate was still saying that she's going to India 😭 I was so confused!
@@jaginaiaelectrizs6341 no I agree. I hated the way the story went because it made no sense for the characters. Do you guys want each other or not🙄 It’s like they kept denying their feelings and the only one getting hurt was Edwina and themselves.
@@mariarivadeneira3360 Well.. I thought it made sense for Anthony, he chose not to be with Kate specifically because he DID want to be with her emotionally too and not just physically, and he had vowed to himself he would never marry for love like that so he couldn't get hurt the way his mother did when his father died and so his wife also couldn't get hurt the way his mother did either. It was irrational, sure. But feelings often are, especially since it was something he got in his head when he was younger and traumatized by his family's loss. But I was extremely disappointed in Kate that she didn't see how, even if her sister genuinely liked Anthony too, her sister didn't deserve to be with someone who didn't genuinely like or want to be with her too. Like, it's not fair to pretend that he did just to try and spare her sister's feelings from ever getting hurt or disappointed.
The chemistry killed me every almost-kiss between Anthony and Kate was more exciting than any sex scene between daphne and Simon and when they finally kissed it was so deserved I loved tension in this season and Simone Ashley is just gorgeous 😍
I also went from a Bridgerton hater to a fan. I really didn’t like the first season and I almost didn’t watch the second season, but I’m glad I did! The costumes were great because they’re going for a Bridgerton aesthetic, not anything remotely trying to be historically accurate. I loved the fun colors, patterns, and textures. The story was also way better!

I was so excited to see a south Asian woman represented, honestly never in a million years would I have thought that but it was so refreshing to see. ESPECIALLY a dark skinned south Asian woman cuz colourism is still a huge thing in South Asia.
True. It's also sad that the actress said she probably wouldn't be a lead actress in her own native country because she is dark skin. I had no idea the extreme colorism in India until I had an Indian friend in high school & everytime she went home to India she told me how her family members encouraged her to bleach her skin smh. Really sad
As an dark skinned British Indian girl with a “white” name I’ve never seen myself represented like this and honestly it made me cry w joy I was such a mess 😂😂 I’m really hoping the success of the show really shows Bollywood directors that they can cast dark skinned women in leading romantic roles
@@delsmontgomery and it was so sweet when Anthony called her by her full name! Idk if it was just me but I felt there were a few nods to code switching in the series and that was also great to see (leaning more into their colour conscious story telling)

I honestly thought that I was the only person who preferred this season and Kate and Anthony over Daphne and Simon, but I'm delighted that Mina, amongst others, share this stance!
I felt zero chemistry between Daphne and Simon, to be honest. It may have been a miscast. Also their storyline felt miserable. I’m just not a fan of forced marriage plots. I’m so glad they did away with the one in season two!
Me and my mom were talking about how this season was so much better than the first one and how we enjoyed it a lot more, I'm happy to see that it is also the general consensus ~
I love the rise of the slow burn trope! It feels like in such a hypersexual society, people are getting tired of sex being shoved in our faces like it’s the equivalent of love being made on screen. It’s the little things within a developing relationship that should be emphasized-keeping viewers on the hook for more as the end surprise will be that much more delightful!
totally agree !!! kanthony was simply electrifying and it's because of all the little things they did when they were alone together in the absence of sex (in attempt to restrain themselves). it was so realistic and that's why it was so exciting as a viewer - it felt seasoned, it felt earned and it resultantly felt so incredibly true. loveeed season 2!!
@@Playsch00l Idk. I can appreciate the lack of sex to build anticipation, but the pacing of that relationship was a glaring problem in this season. It doesn't focus on their romance as much as it should've, and all we really get is very spread out moments of heavy breathing and eye f*cking. They never really get to talk, enough to justify where the connection is coming from. It takes 7 episodes for them to acknowledge what they actually have in common as elder siblings burdened with responsibility. At least Daphne and Simon got to have real conversations before they were constantly having sex. By then their love for each other was earned. It wasn't just brief moments of sexual tension, then all the sudden they're in love. It was more fully realized romantic relationship, grounded in friendship. Had they given Anthony and Kate's relationship more screen time, they could've had that but, it just felt empty by the end. Which is a shame, because it starts off great up until episode 4. Then it slows down way too much and becomes stagnant.
@@AGEE_95 i absolutely agree with that take tbh !! kanthony's love felt more real imo but i think the audience knew more about their compatibility than they themselves did, as you point out. i personally think its still much better than simon/daphne as i dont think simon's acting was executed well enough and its a huge reason for people preferring the core relationship of s2 over s1. that being said i hope we get to see more of kanthony build in s3 (though unlikely) as i agree that their relationship was hardly even explored once their feelings for each other were finally voiced. it was a bit frustrating to see so many other subplots that got in the way of seeing kanthony blossom, though hopefully it means theyre willing to have kanthony be a subplot throughout s3 too.
While I do agree that it is true, and has been true [at minimum ]since at least the 1990s to the early-early 2000s, that there is a real problem with fiction conflating lust and love together as if these two things are entirely the same or totally-interchangeable concepts-and/or with depicting sex in fiction all the time, even when it maybe shouldn't be or isn't exactly needed or necessary, instead of ever focusing even more[ if even at all] on the other things or other relationship-elements as well. ....I also don't think that no fictional thing(s) should ever be made which actually want(s) to purposefully focus themself as much or even moreso on the sex &/or lust as it focuses itself on the love and/or other things, nor do I personally think that it is necessarily or always an inherently or automatically BAD thing for anyone to ever actually[ or actually want to] create or watch/read something that does in fact do so either. I think there needs to be more of a mix of different kinds of things being created, for different purposes or with different focuses, rather than all things quite so much always trying to aim for only the same any-particular-kind(s) of thing or "feel" or "vibe" or focus or whatever. ((if any of that even makes any sense???😅🤷♀️🤷♀️😁🤣)) Like, basically ... I think it's true that there should definitely be some things out there like Bridgerton that emphasize more the other things in developing relationships aside from the lust or the sex. But I also think it should still be perfectly okay for there to also be some things out there like Bridgerton that DO focus on showing the sensuality and/or the lust or the sexual things themself or whatever too; *_OR_* even for there to be things like Bridgerton out there that actually have _both_ the other things AND the lusty/sexual things in them as well. But let's also not pretend that there wasn't already a real problem with shallow relationship development in fiction sometimes, even before when it wasn't so typical or common to actually show or even hardly mention sex happening at all, especially in movies &/or tv series; because, there definitely was. ..Unfortunately. 😅😅🙃 Lol🤣 And I think that is, in fact, probably why the relationship development shown in fiction is STILL so shallow, even these days, too...just now there is also sex shown instead as well. Lol (But maybe that's just me 🤷♀️ 😂😂😂 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤣)
@@AGEE_95 While I think you have a fair point, here; I also think it is entirely possible for a romance or relationship to develop even without either person being consciously aware that it was happening[ or that it was happening in a specifically romantic way] until it just eventually hits them later on that it actually had, and I do think that is kind of what actually happened with Kate and Anthony. And I think that's totally fine. They talked frequently, they would talk to each other almost more than they would ever even talk to anyone else-that is why Daphne initially mistook Kate for the one her brother was supposedly courting when first meeting her, because they obviously always gravitated toward each other more than to anyone else, while everyone else was kind of somewhat notably ignored or neglected by them in favor of each other. I don't think they really needed to be doing so in an intentionally romantic way for it to actually be developing in a romantic way, especially because it obviously became so anyhow. But the fact that their response to realizing that it was in fact romantic or that it even might be so, was to vehemently deny and/or fight that fact as absolutely much and long as possible until they basically just literally had no other choice nor excuse but to give up and give into it, did I think drag it on sometimes to near-ridiculous proportions and lengths. at the very least especially at certain moments/after a certain point. So, that is still a fair enough complaint, I think. But another thing worth noting I think is that it was impossible for Daphne to be eye-jumping Simon at all, initially, since she didn't even knowing that was a thing which could be done at all. Whereas Kate obviously knew at least that sex existed, and Anthony not only knew about it but also had past experience actually engaging in it. It makes sense for Kate & Anthony's attraction to have quite-believably potentially escalated to that point even faster than it did for Daphne & Simon-either with or without the non-physical relationship development also accompanying it.
The rom-com drought is real!! That’s why I was drawn to k-dramas a few years ago in the first place. They are so good at the “edge of your seat” romance. Like the trope that it takes 8-12 episodes before the main couple gets together and it has you screaming at your tv and then you make a little victory dance when they finally kiss. Bridgerton season 2 was the first western drama in a looong time that made me feel this way. And it was so refreshing. We need more shows where we scream at our tv for the main couple to “kiss already you love each other!!”. For them to then turn away from each other or be interrupted and we scream a painful “COME ON!!”.
That sucking the boob thing is so absolutely ludicrous and stupid, I literally laughed out loud when I heard about that. idk what the author smoked when she wrote that but i can't have been good
It wasn’t like he was full-on sucking a tit lmao but he was also way more triggered by the sting in the book and Kate even thought how she didn’t recognize him because he was so focused on saving her life. It was honestly really heartbreaking and well done. His trauma really came through in the scene.
@@manuferguson6564 It’s not. If you’ve never had dealt with flashbacks, congratulations. But trauma is not funny, no matter how you want to view it. Yeah, that's the one criticism that a lot of people seem to have about the books is that they are painfully hetrosexual... And unfortunately it seems like the writers of the show are going to have to stick decently close to the relationships in the books... From what I've heard, it's in the Netflix contract that they have to keep the relationships the same 🤷♀️ so there's not going to be any queer relationships, if that is the case. Because they legally can't do them if they HAVE to keep all the sibling straight... As someone who is in the lgbtq + community, that's just kind of boring to me... to be honest. There are people who have made suggestions as to how they could genderbend Sophie so that Benedict could be the queer rep in the show ( and those suggestions were honestly pretty great and it WOULDN'T change the storyline all that significantly to genderbend Sophie into a man, as their main conflict is a class difference, from what I've seen told.)... But I'm not sure if the Netflix contract would allow for such a change, unfortunately.
@@AnxietyRatI'm not sure a lot of people would like to see a genderbend on a love story they know and love. I wouldn't. I want to see the chemistry between Sophie and Benedict come to the screen. Let's be honest, the chemistry and tension between Kate and Anthony was far more intense than the relationship between Daphne and Simon- The savour was immaculate !
Also - all due respect to Phoebe & Rege - but Simone & Jonny are better actors imo. They are also great friends outside the show which you can see in the show as well (that chemistry!) and they understand their characters so well!
i kinda have a theory about the disapearance of romcom. Basically i think that in the early 2000's the film industry became obsessed with appealing to the "male gaze". It's no coiencidence that comedies directed by Judd Appatow, wich were basically "bro-coms" and superheros movies were so big during this period (and still are). All of the sudden romcoms were these "silly thing silly women" liked. Even the queens of the genre (Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, Sandra Bullock for a few years before coming back to it) kinda turned their back to it. But i feel like we are gonna see a rom-com renaissance soon. There's Bridgerton off course, but i also feel like we can't undermine the huge influence of kdramas! As you were saying , people were YEARNING for Rom coms, and for the past few years a ton of people turned to watching korean drama to get their "romance fix". And that's something Hollywood can't keep ignoring anymore (hopefully)
Thinking about it, there haven‘t been too many comedies in general that I have enjoyed in the past years, romantic or not. (Which might also be related to having kind of avoided them, to be honest.) And from what I have seen, many comedies struggle in the second half, when they need to resolve the initial situation in a funny but meaningful, emotionally sincere way.
I think it’s that and the disappearance of the mid-budget studio film over the past few years and the rise of the “franchised universe” movie. They don’t even make Judd Apatow movies anymore really. Streaming changed the profitability of such ventures
Dude, Jonathan and Simone act like best friends, and have SUCH good chemistry in real life. It's really quite fun to watch them in interviews, as they are so close.
I never thought of Eloise as being gay, just someone who didn't want to do what society dictates she must. But Benedict? Hell yes. I really thought that's where they were going with him last season. I was disappointed to see them pull back from that.
How did it ever seem as if they were sending him in that direction? Just because he walked in on something awkward between two other characters? (That happens all the time in stuff without it ever being anything more than fodder for awkwardness and/or a token appearance and/or virtue signaling because the character walking in on it doesn't just like openly condemn them to death for it or whatever.) Honestly, I feel like the whole thing with Collin and Marina and her husband in season 2 vibed much more queer to me personally than anything else on the show; I would probably much rather see that actually explored than see him Penelope end up together for no actual reason except Penelope likes him, especially when he didn't even notice that on his own.😅😅🤣 But that's probably just a me. Lol Completely agree with you about Eloise though! I think it's possibly problematic how so many people always seem to push for every characters who wants to push-back against societal expectations of marriage or proper behavior or clothing-attire or whatever to be queer.😅😅 I mean, I can appreciate people wanting to see more queer characters, but I feel as if that is often a misdirected outlet for it? I guess? If that even makes sense. ^-^
@@jaginaiaelectrizs6341 same I thought him walking in on that just showed Benedict’s flexibility and open mindedness. And Eloise’s last thing in mind is love. She wants education, freedom and to rely on herself not on a man. That doesn’t immediately make her into girls.
@@itsjustkarinamusic I mean.. I wouldn't even necessarily say that love isn't on her mind, it's just that she starts off not thinking that any guys who would marry her but also allow her to have her freedom and an education and all of that actually exist, so that makes it initially a non-option to her mind.😊
I am OBSESSED with the color theory/plotline of the dresses this season. They've always color coordinated the families (Featheringtons are orange, yellow, and green generally), but i noticed it especially this season, particularly with Kate.
Can I just say that the second I saw Edwina I thought “wow she looks like a princess” and later on the queen made that comment about her nephew and I was like YES I KNEW IT
I really appreciate how they were completely breaking the norms about dark skinned people without acknowledging it. Like, it was treated just as normal as having a light skinned person as a lead which I think is how it should be treated. It would be so predictable if a girl said something degrading about them being from India or outside Europe or being dark skinned and then a likable character like Eloise or Daphne say a snarky comeback to defend them. Or if a guy says something degrading about the two girls and then Anthony comes to their rescue and invites them to a dance. But no, they did none of that petty and preachy shit which is so refreshing.
i dont know anything about the writers or creators processes but it seemed like they kind of. listened?? to what people said??? like with a show that had such insurmountable success with the first season they could have just as easily not fixed anything but it seemed like they listened to some feedback. also i think that fact that each season has essentially a different cast and storyline helps solve some problems with story and chemistry that were had. overall im surprised!! still not my type of tv but im impressed nonetheless!! sidenote: the hair the fit the bonnet it is all soo good !! never not having good outfits on this here channel !!
@@tealight3419 hope you won’t see this as an attack , but im genuinely curious why you being lesbian was relevant? is it a lesbian inside joke or something?
@@yugen8195 there‘s just a lot of jokes about the length of hetero-sex in comparison with other sexualities in the LGBT+ Community (Yk the lesbians going for a whole night with snack breaks inbetween kinda joke lol)
What I think sets Bridgerton apart from all other shows these days is that it is so refreshing to see a piece of media that embraces joy and love so unapologetically. The stakes are still high and there are points where the drama is intense but it’s not afraid to get sappy and cheesy and I love that! I totally agree with you - BRING BACK ROMCOMS!
I liked how it had heart and respected the characters, but didn’t otherwise take itself too seriously. It was refreshing to just be entertained by pretty, fluffy, loveliness. there were underlying themes that asked the audience some questions, but the writers trusted us to take it all in and appreciate the story for what it was. I’m excited for season two.
@@nothinglikeburntvag agreed I am sooo excited for season 3! This season had such a good balance of serious moments and pure joy. I also love how none of the cast members/show creators act with a mindset that the show is "just a romcom" and therefore they don't need to put in the effort. Everyone involved are all passionate about telling a compelling story that celebrates love and I am so here for it!
@@erin7310 Exactly. It's clear that the creators (behind and in front of the camera) respected and valued the story, which certainly translated onscreen.
Also fun fact the "I burn for you" line in season one was actually a line that Anthony says in his book... And it was like one of the best poetic lines within season 1. So they took something ANTHONY said to Kate and made it be Simon and Daphnes thing.... Rude, IMO. Lmao.
Simone Ashley also explained in an interview that Chris Van Dusen really encourages and insists on diversity in the writers room as well, so one of the writers is South Asian and made the suggestion of the Sheffield/Sharma family being South Asian instead. I think it's awesome cause it really goes to show how important diversity in the writers rooms and behind the scenes are as well and how much of a ripple effect that creates in proper representation in front of the camera. I also felt absolutely so silly at how invested I was in this couple on screen but they truly were amazing.
yES!!!! I've heard so much outrage over the lack of "chemistry" in this season, but in reality there is so much more chemistry in this season, just less sex. I too went from a Bridgerton hater to a stan
I liked season 1 just fine. I love series that allow me to turn off my brain for a while and that I can "hang out with" while I do chores around the house and stuff like that, but then season 2 came and I LOVED the show. I couldn't even fold the laundry because I was so captivated by it. For me, it was a definite improvement and it 100% has to do with the actors who play Kate and Anthony being so compelling on screen and having SO MUCH CHEMISTRY.
im so glad more people are acknowledging the casting as being the main reason for season 2's success compared to season 1! jonathan bailey's acting is just incrediblyyyyyy more nuanced than rege's in my opinion. the show was all the better for it
yeah, i was so confused when she did not got that part, and it was super clear and understandable for kate to hide that fact from her mom and edwina. Since Edwina would likely marry to whoever english noblemen who offers her marriage proposal without her being in love with him, so she can save her family from financial ruins. As well as how out of touch her mom is of their financial situation after the father died, I think kate took that responsibility, and do not want to burden her mother from it. Kate knew how much the mother pride, and also shameful she would feel to know her parent who she left behind to marry off a lower class men and now crawl back to her parents' wealth. It was important for the storyline to show how much responsibilities and duties that kate is hold, and how similar it is to anthony. After both father died, the eldest siblings took the responsibility as the head of the family.
@@wellknown1204 right I thought it was obvious- also realistically before Edwina was named the dimond she doesn't have much going for her. Yes she is pretty and agreeable and accomblished but not rich/connected beyond lady Danbury sponsureship for one season. SShe comes from a family who has previously been in a HUGE scandle as well, many men do not want to be associated with that. Her chances due to their finances are slime because it was not just women marrying for money at this time- Men did too! Thats WHY kate pushes her so hard- she knows without money and connections edwina needs to rely on grace and beauty alone. I feel like some much of this story line goes back to Jane Austens tropes around the economics of dating and without that background knowledge of how money and marriage work it is sort of hard for people to understand the full weight of the situation.
Y’all I saw Mina at a vintage expo and SHE IS MAGNETIC IRL!! Like everyone was transfixed at her. I thought I was hallucinating she’s so beautiful (I also said hi)
11:25 just some additional info: we are taught this in Indian schools how the British colonials led the decline of indian artistry by creating cheap reproductions of artisan products and also by heavily taxing imports. India traded in wool silk textiles metal craft like vessels and ornaments objects in gold silver copper steel and iron. British trade policies led to the drain of wealth from India. Indian artisans lost support of kings and nobles bc British wanted India to become a supplier of raw materials and an importer of finished goods.
Learned this in my APWH class and it even came up on the Exam, it’s basically like anything able to be made for cheap immediately replaces the more quality textiles and their artisans lifestyle just plummets. Don’t ya love imperialism
Yet you watch a pretend show based on British people integrating with Black and Indian people and some finding love….🤦♀️ I know why, you love thought of it and dream about it every time you sleep at night. Pathetic.
The title is so relatable 😅 going into this I was like “I’m not about to watch 8 hours of misogynistic peace of a** get a happy ending “ he kinda redeemed himself though, I guess.. the chemistry between Kate and Anthony is magnetic! And I love Bridgerton’s family dynamic plus Daphne and Eloise were so much more likable 🥰
Precisely, Kate and Anthony's story seemed more interesting than Daphne and Simon's "To All the Boys" situation, and it's all thanks to Simone and Jonathan's electric chemistry.
i’m also glad they didn’t go overboard with making anthony and kate argue/dislike each other, so many creators take the enemies to lovers trope so far that often in the end characters getting together feels wrong… but they did it perfectly for s2 imo
the family dynamic was so good this season! you had them bantering like season one, but you'd get little moments like the brothers fencing, benedict escorting eloise, colin giving benedict advice, daphne helping anthony, etc. that showed that familial understanding and love. it really cemented them as the core of the story.
@@hibashams I love that as well, and I'm glad we didn't have them physically hurting each other (they do so in the books, stepping on feet and stuff like that) cuz that would have made it so much more difficult to root for them
I like that they gave Anthony the "Mr. Darcy" wet shirt scene... Nice! Apparently the girls on the show also agree. Things like that are much more tasteful since they're paying homage to the show without which we wouldn't be here!
I' probably gonna get ripped apart for this but I never liked the "I burn for you", I just thought it was so... bland, like I felt it gave nothing and was kinda underwhelming. "You are the bane of my existence" is on a whooole other level though, I loved it.
I actually preferred Kate over Daphne because she was so charming on her own. Sure, I swooned over the scenes with Anthony. But the actress fot Kate sold it so well. Charming, charismatic and interesting. And the tension. I was glued to my screen and legit squealed when they got married. That is how bad I fell for these two. I havent felt this way since my years on tumblr and watching the Vampire Diaries 😂
For me, very unpopular opinion, but I was not that into Anthony at all this season, but still loved it and it was ALL Kate. She’s just so gorgeous and so charming
We're truly in the Dark Ages for rom-coms unfortunately. I think that's one of the reasons why I was so disappointed in season 1, it didn't satisfy any of my needs re: pining, chemistry and building towards a satisfying climax (no pun intended). Season 2 fixed that completely, thank God! I, too, am now obsessed with Kanthony and my personality has been taken over by them for a solid 80 percent. Glad to watch a review/reflection that completely words my thoughts exactly!
Really? Daphne and Simon for sure had chemistry. There wasn’t pining and building like how there was in season 2 and the whole rape thing with daphne was for sure problematic but chemistry wise, the casting people seem to have gotten it right both seasons
@@beatm6948 oh wow, I personally really liked them together. I felt that there were definitely some things that were problematic and I wholeheartedly agree season 2 was better, but I still thought Daphne and Simon were cute together 😄

I think the main difference between the two seasons was _when_ the core conflict could be resolved. Simon not wanting children was an issue during the marriage, whereas Anthony's concept of his ideal viscountess / Kate's plans for her sister's and her own future didn't really matter after the wedding. So in S1, Simon and Daphne getting married couldn't have been the climax.
Kinda fucked that we see better dark skinned south Asian rep on western TV shows while Indian shows cast Alia Bhatt as a South Indian for like the 4th time
I love Kate Sharma! She’s so confident in her opinions and way more relatable than Daphne. I couldn’t stop staring at how beautiful she is every time she was onscreen.
No I totally agree. The real downside of season 2 is that we didn't get MORE of Kate and Anthony. Season 1 was pretty much Daphne and Simon, and while I did like them for the first 5 episodes, when the whole kid drama and then the assault happened, the entire season was ruined for me. I thought they had chemistry, but not like Kate and Anthony, and Kate and Anthony are already much better people overall than Daphne and Simon. But I felt as if often times, Anthony and Kate got a backseat to all the other drama this season! I really loved the high sexual tension scenes we got this season, but I wanted to see more of the casual, friendly, relaxed scenes like the mud scene during the pall-mall game. Like them actually getting along. And I did feel like Edwina's anger was dragged on too long; like why didn't Kate just explain earlier? I would've loved some more time with Kate and Anthony after they married too. Season 2 is almost perfect. It's just enough bodice ripper but just enough period drama. Like not as stuffy or serious or "virtuous" (because let's be honest, people have been having sex forever) without overdoing the sexy stuff. Like the hand scene from P&P 2005, or Mr. Knightley lying on the floor realizing he loved Emma in Emma 2020. That pining, that chemistry, which is both sexual but also sweet and sensual, and a little desperate. Like it's perfect. I know there are some things from the books that they should've kept (I am going to read it and find out what exactly), but the changes so far are not too bad, and it made me super excited to see what we do with the other storylines. Too bad about Pen though. She's not a good person, but I still feel bad for her. I just feel like she has never really had anyone. I mean, what she did to Marina was terrible (low key feel what Eloise got she had coming anyway), but her mother and sisters belittle her, Colin has always overlooked her, and Eloise has now spent 2 seasons talking at her as opposed to with her. Even Marina was not really her friend. I am interested to see how they redeem her, and how the Colin romance is salvageable really. I've been told Kate and Anthony are the cream of the crop when it comes to couples in Bridgerton, with I think maybe Hyacinth's storyline also being up there??
"That pining, that chemistry, which is both sexual but also sweet and sensual, and a little desperate." girl u should be a movie reviewer!! what a nice description
Depends on who you ask. Most people (I would guess like 40% has book 2 as their favorite.) But both book 3 and 4 are also pretty populare. For me it´s book 7 that is the second best
i think that there's no need to worry, as kate and anthony are the head of the bridgerton household and so will have to be around for the rest of the seasons! im sure we'll get a lot of cute moments between them. the show seems to be mixing the story lines up so that each season develops the other characters as well as the main romance, which i love personally
I saw a take on TikTok that was in favour of the show doing away with the forced marriage this season because it wouldn't look that great for an Indian woman (the oppressed/colonized) to be forced into marriage with a white British man (the oppressor/colonizer)
When they opened the show to colorblind casting, there are several storylines that will get affected because the racial undertones, though not intentional, can be extremely problematic.
i view it as historical fantasy. do not care about accuracy. if we can have science fiction, space fantasies, and anything "Marvel" makes. i think people can get over historical inaccuracy. I don't care about whether the outfits are correct for the period. B/c none of it would be accurate for the period. I view Bridgerton as a period dressed Gossip Girl. I love to see the Indian representation and I would love to see some Caribbean representation on Bridgerton as well.
Yes! As a big Austen fan, I was really looking forward to first season of Bridgerton. It doesn't has to be accurate at all for me to enjoy it. My problem with first season were none existing chemistry between lead roles and sexual assault. I think we can call it historical fantasy and I would really like to see these kind of romance dramas. The diversity, fashion, romance... Everything I need.
@@hi-ve1cw so happy to see you grasped the point of cultural appropriation. Now if you could only understand appropriation vs appreciation. Bridgeton gives us a peek, an imagining of a post racial world. One where minorities voices weren't stunted, smothered, silenced and killed. Imagining the past this way, can help us move forward to build a post racial future. Bc none of us are going anywhere anytime soon. So maybe we should learn to live together.
I'm biracial, half white half south Asian. I never really cared that I almost never saw characters who look like me. However, Kate Sharma is very similar to me and I love it! Both externally - her skin is darker than mine, but similar to many women in my family; her blue dresses in the first episodes remind me of the dresses I usually wear on weddings - and internally - I'm also a big sister who loves her little sister, I'm also a "older" single woman. And the jewelry showcased on Bridgeton is very similar to the ones in my family. I still don't need characters to look like me in order to relate to them, but damn it feels great! Now I can't wait to show my grandma this season (it helps that it's less raunchy... 😅).
Edwina was my favorite character this season. She was cute and fun but beyond that she had such deep compassion for everyone around her no matter how many times she was ROYALLY fucked over
I certainly appreciated the choices about diversity that season 2 made, and I REALLY appreciate the reduction in sex scenes (they just took up so much screen time and became SO tedious). I feel like the writing is still incredibly thin, but I'm totally okay with it because it lets me just turn off my brain and enjoy the fun and beautiful colors. I'm totally in favor of more seasons in this style, it's just fun to watch!
I kind of liked the "complication" of the Sheffields offering a dowry to Edwina for marrying- however the deal was that she had to a NOBLE gentleman, not just any gentleman. That's why Kate was steering Edwina towards men who had noble titles and turning down men who didn't. (And, part of the reason why all the people in London started to think that "if you want to get with Edwina, you have to go through Kate".) While Kate also had a high priority on Edwina finding someone who made her happy, too. While I do think that Kate should have been honest about the whole dowry for a noble title plot with the relatives, I also can understand why she didn't want to tell. She still wanted Edwina to find someone who made her happy among the pool of noble dudes who liked her, rather than saying yes to the first person who might have been willing to ask her. Especially, she didn't want Edwina to go for some fortune hunter who could have traded her a noble title for her dowry money and end up with no one actually being happy.
For me, Kate keeping the Sheffield's inheritance from Edwina and Mary made sense because it showed she was thinking of herself as the head of the family, responsible for "protecting" others in ways that they didn't really want or need. It also meant that when Edwina realized Kate & Anthony were in love she was already doubting Kate's honesty; it gave more weight to her anger. Also I did not watch Bridgerton s1 because of all the spoilers I heard (including from your video), but this one seemed right up my alley! Honestly don't know if I'll keep watching but this season was a great time at least.
Yes, also I think at some point Kate said she was not telling her sister because she wanted her sister to choose freely and not to accept the first noble man just so she can secure her and her family financial stability.
Like, she did not want her little sister to feel pressured and maybe marry a very old person who she does not love at all just for the sake of the family
it's very telling that they took anthony's line "i burn for you" from the 2nd book and gave it to daphne and simon ... without it, they wouldn't have had anything to work with. it's mind boggling to me that a lot of people insist that simon and daphne had better chemistry than kate and anthony ...
@@dw7896 from what I know (haven't read the books, but have read many summaries and reviews just out of curiosity) the books are trash. Meet-cute, scandal, forced into marriage, sex, rinse, repeat. @@gracelebron3536 oh yeah the books are soooo bad! After i watched s2 i ran to get tvwlm and rmb(book 4) because i thought that if the show was this good, the books must be even BETTER! I was so very wrong, the books are so horny in a super bad way. Spoilers!! In RMB (colin and pen’s story), i find Colin so be an insufferable angry prick, i still can’t get over the scene where he grabs Pen’s arm so hard and the way he was always so angry with her and then immediately seduces her for whatever reason.
My only issue with season two is that they didn’t address Kate’s PTSD from her mother’s death. She said she hated storms, but they didn’t show her episodes. I’m hoping they explore that in future seasons because I loved a story dealing with PTSD during the regency era. The past which bothered me in the book was how once Kate learns the cause, it’s like an instant cure for her. That’s not how it works. In a series, they can explore the ongoing healing process.

So glad other people feel this way. The lack of consequences for Daphne literally assaulting Simon was???? Insane! The slow burn in s2 had 1000x more chemistry
Did she though? According to Simon, he *cannot* have children, so her staying on top shouldn't matter at all. He's experienced and having sex with somebody who knows nothing about sex. It's not set in the 21st century where a woman in England has access to sex education. In their reality, it's his responsibility to educate her on what sex is and how babies are made. Like, he knows before they get together that she knows nothing, doesn't even know how to masturbate let alone how a dick works. He doesn't educate her and he pays the price.
Mina, you READ MY MIND about the flashbacks!! Anthony’s flashback scenes were some of the best character building in the entire show, and I kept hoping they would give Kate her own flashbacks of her parents and expand her story in the same way. I’m honestly really disappointed that they didn’t do that!!
"It was embarrassing how crazy I was getting over these two fictional characters" SAME HAT I kept yelling "I AM SO FERAL RIGHT NOW" the first half of the season when I was trying to explain it to my partner
I didn’t care about season 1 either I didn’t even finish it so I started season 2 with very low expectations and I was BLOWN AWAY I really loved Anthony and Kate and I enjoy the other siblings side plots. I decided to check out the books cause I’ve been seeing Bridgerton fans complaining about how little of the main characters we got and I was so confused. The book was horrible and the story made no sense?😭 The bee scene made me cringe so hard. I read the other two brothers ones and are equally as horrible, literally all their love interests act apathetic resigned when they have to marry them and then all of a sudden they realize they’re in love 💀 I can’t understand how people can be disappointed with the show’s changes? No one would watch it if they stayed loyal to Julia’s stories lmao. I’m looking forward to Pen and Collin’s season tho

Sooo true I started season 2 with the intention of it being the background entertainment while dyeing my hair, and after one episode I was like this is way better than I expected. The storyline between Kate and Anthony is soooo good and the tension is just omg I have no words
I was literally the same, thought I’d “grown out of” being a fangirl but nope, just haven’t had any good characters to fangirl over in the last 8 years 😂
As a Bangladeshi, I loved the South Asian representation this season, even the mismatch of languages used by the Sharma's. Dark-skinned actresses (dark skin tones are underrepresented in the Indian film industry itself) wearing bright silks and jewelry (although Indian jewelry is gold/silver-based rather than rose-gold). Also loved the casual representation of oiling ones hair. A very common and wholesome thing done in Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani culture. The haldi ceremony was a great addition as well though the classical rendition of Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham cracked me up. Kate's pronunciation of "bon" made me cringe everytime though.
S1 was so terrible! The sex scenes had no impact tbh. But Kate and Anthony exchanging glances, discussing ANYTHING, brushing a hand past the other-OML THE CHEMISTRY I CANT EVEN
This is supposed to be the best book of the series though. I haven't read them, to be fair. I am a little worried about any future seasons. And I can't really imagine them having one for all of the Bridgerton children. What would next season be about? Frederick? It feels a little weird trying to imagine him as a leading man with all the art stuff he already has going on for him.
this season literally rewired my brain for the better and temporarily brought me back to my fangirling teenage self. there wasn't one episode this season where i didn't audibly scream bc of the tension between anthony and kate. everything about it was so perfect.
22:26 is literally my favorite scene between Anthony & Kate. I was like "I WANNA BE THE BANE OF SOME LOVESICK MAN'S EXISTENCE AND THE OBJECT OF HIS DESIRE TOO!"
Mina talking about how crazy she was getting over the fictional characters and how it revived the fangirling spirit inside of her...I felt that so deeply in my core!!! I want to feel that way so much more often!!
Bridgerton isn't trying to be a historically accurate period drama. It's just a mix and match of good romance and comedy writing that is lighthearted and fun. I like that it doesn't stick to the script of black/coloured people being severely oppressed. As a black person, I wouldn't watch it if I had to suffer through depictions of coloured people being oppressed to appreciate the romance. Season 2 was definitely better. I love sexual tension and a slow build-up so I really enjoyed this season. The actors were spectacular. Finding out that the actor who played Anthony was gay made me appreciate the acting even more. The actress who played Kate Sharma was spectacular. I really enjoyed seeing darker-skinned Indians on screen. The books are also quite good too. I personally enjoyed the original storyline for Anthony and Kate. I haven't read the next books because I want to have the image of the characters in my head as the coloured characters that are depicted in the Netflix series when I eventually read them.
I’m totally not ashamed to say that after watching season 2, I definitely said to my husband, “You are the bane of bane of my existence and the object of all my desires.” That’s how deep that line is when you’re just dumb in love and pining over someone lol.
As a dark skinned south Indian girl, i did have some issues with the show (the love triangle, some indian representation issues) but I also cried so much when I saw Kate on screen. A brown girl with dark skin as a lead, as the object of beauty and desire, a girl who LOOKS LIKE ME!! Oh man i loved it
They're still messing up with the corsets though as two actresses have said they couldn't eat in their corsets. Regency stays don't compress your stomach though nor cinch the waist. They really need to stop causing pain to their actresses.
the lead actors are truly amazing, they got me to CRY (more like sob tbh) in a scene with a classical rendition on WRECKING BALL playing. Now that is true talent.
Loved that they casted a darker skinned Indian for this! So much of South Asian/ Indian representation is often by lighter skinned females. The gold jewellery suited Kate so so much and she overall was great!
I think the reason they included the plot of Kate hiding the deal with the Sheffields is to further the parallels between her and Anthony. He basically did the same thing to his brother by hiding the fact that he paid the art school and letting him think he got in on merit alone. Kanthony feels the need to shield their families from the hard truths of the world so they can continue living in blissful ignorance.
Now, that last quote hit me hard. I am from Ukraine, and I literally sometimes watched Bridgerton sitting in a bomb shelter. The possibility to escape the reality and switch to facing ‘normal’ human problems and dilemmas together with characters, was something that helped me get through the darkest hours. We need more of shows like that! Colorful, easy, witty, funny, with a bit of a drama, but nothing irreversible. I am struggling to find something like the Bridgerton series on Netflix - everything seems either gray or too depressing and serious..
Season 2 was everything i would’ve wanted season 1 to be!! And it really makes me hope they get a southeast asian LI for a later season so we can get more of these beautiful patterns.
A fantastic (queer!) historical romcom that just came out is our flag means death on hbo max. There’s a lot of fun anachronisms and storytelling through costumes too
Literally watched 6 episodes of this show in one night, I was so addicted.... I think it's another one of those shows where historical (and geographical lol) accuracy means nothing but honestly it's so good who cares
It took me a month to finish S1 but I finished S2 is 24 hours AKSKDJDJS what you said about the fangirl revival is so true! i forgot that part of me existed. i couldn’t stop giggling throughout S2.
Love the video! Perceptions naturally change over time. When the BBC Pride and Prejudice came out in 1995, it was viewed as a fresh and modern take on period drama. It was the first time period families had been shown to behave like actual families, e.g. Lydia and Kitty talking/screeching over each constantly. It was also the first Austin adaptation to show the male characters alone or interacting with each other without females around. Austin famously wrote what she knew, but this production was quite radical, in that it showed what Darcy got up to on his own. The infamous lake scene is remembered for its sexiness, but it was also a delightful shock to see a period male lead be embarrassed and less than stoically perfect at the time. You can draw a direct line from that whole sequence to Mr Knightley's collapse on the floor in 2020's Emma. I'm sure in another twenty years, people will view Bridgeton as old fashioned (probably due to its lack of queer romance).
The way you described having that fan girl feeling again was exactly how I felt while watching! I was literally going feral with the gazing looks and the hand holding scenes.
The post racial society was my biggest turn off Just say: it's fantasy, never happened... WE KNOW IT'S NOTNREAL JUST GIVE ME MY LOVELY DARK SKINNED GIRLS IN LOVELY REGENCY INSPIRED GLITTER DRESSES AND CUTE DREADS ON BEAUTIFUL UPDOS that's my hot take 😂
oddly enough, before this show became the center of criticism (rightly so, in some cases) that was actually what made me want to watch it. but once i heard that half-assed explanation on how love conquers all i honestly just threw away the bs explanation in my mind lol, it wasn't necessary. let's just say this is a completely different reality where racism just happened to not exist or be prevalent in this world lol. i guess, in a sense a "fantasy", but not really.
@@chaaaargh YES! THIS! EXACTLY THIS! you put into words my exactly thoughts, like, I wanted to watch it at first because I thought they would just go the fantasy AU route, you know? but it was such a bullshit, laze explanation... ugh, second season was way better because they just went with it AND decided to insert elements of the culture into the characters, that was something we were missing by /a lot/ on the first season too
Yeees!!!, So wanted to watch a society where there's no racism just because, like, people are better and there is only clasisim or whatever, but noo, they had to ruin it...
YES THE SECOND SEASON IS MY MFKIN BREAD AND BUTTER. Also the meaning of seeing another Indian AND South Indian woman in a storyline I never thought possible for pretty gals that look like me- omg I can’t explain the happiness I get from this
What does it mean exactly to you ? Im very curious. I don’t understand what joy you can feel by seeing indian women in a regency period england ? Its not like south asian movies or actors are anything rare ?

Are u kidding?! Even in India they need more representation my guy!!
@@Artemisnr i agree on the need to represent more darker skin women, but i feel UK fictions are portraying many south asian characters already. Im not a brit myself but almost every british show i see has one or several actors of south asian descent in it. I mean i get the whole escapist stuff of Bridgerton, its not supposed to be historically faithfull in any way, but i never understood this « im so happy to be representented » stuff. Im gay, and i can enjoy shows without gay people in it (thank god 😅😂). Plus sometimes gay characters are just awefully written so sometimes its almost better NOT to be represented 😂 But i mean i dont feel excluded if i see a movie where there aren’t gay people. Because there are others where they are present ? I hope you understand what i mean, i dont mean it as a criticism or anything, im just curious for a long time about this and seeing your comment made me want to ask 😊
@@Chrysobubulle that’s fine! I like when ppl ask when they are curious and want to learn other view points. It’s rare to see on the internet it feels like. Well the whole genre is a lil lacking even in mainstream rep of the lgbt community. I mean we got love Simon but I need more and more poc gays
I agree, not just because i'm on the ace spectrum too but also because those scenes where there just to make everyone simp for the characters and fill the time stamp of the episodes. But at least I had a good laugh because most of the sex scenes where hilarius and cringe since Simon and Daphne seemed to have lost any sens of discretion to the point where I was like, yeah, I get it, they like having sex, can we move on? This is getting ridicuolus. Exceps the rape scene of course, that was messed up and Daphne should have paid the consequences. Can't we have a fantasy imitation of a period drama where men and women can get justice for being sexually assaulted along with the impossible respect for bot black and white ethnicity even (even if it's clumsy)?
Yes!! If sex scenes for the sake of sex scenes are what other people like, fine by them, but for me they’re just unnecessary and uncomfortable. Like, if I wanted to watch people have sex, I’d watch porn. The hypersexuality the riddled season 1 also (imo) sent the subliminal message that the main, if not only way, for a couple to express and experience intimacy with one another is through sexual activity, which is simply not true.
That's where you're wrong about Anthony, he's still the same person. Rewatch what he did in season 1 and compare to season 2 which allows further characterization.
I agree. His plot in S1 was deliberate. The writers - for having so many characters- do a good job of giving them flaws that set them up for growth in later seasons. But trimming the sideburns -THAT was definitely a case of “we made a mistake and now we can fix it”.
Jonathan Bailey's acting really impressed me this season. I love Eloise's feminist storyline and the beautiful Southeast Asia representation as well, but for some reason his acting/charisma is what stuck with me the most.
I can also call myself a Bridgeton fan now. The chemistry between Kate and Anthony was fire. 🔥 Also, I’m a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope. I wasn’t about to watch this season because I didn’t like season one at all, but I’m glad I did because it was more enjoyable. For the lack of romance in tv shows, I will say Korean dramas with romance fill my void.
As always: Sexual Tension >>>> Actual Sex Scenes
Oh yes I definitely agree...sexual tension scenes are way hotter than sex scenes

Mf she straight SA’d him what are you talking about

I actually loved that the show doesn’t make it a point to be so “WE HAVE REPRESENTATION” and instead gave us a world where people just are, and it’s totally normal. That’s how our world should have always been.
Yes, they definitely improved this aspect compared to season one and I really like this season even though the first one was a hate watch because of all the reasons Mina talked about :)

Also, can we get a hooray for the makeup department? I don't think I've ever seen makeup highlight the beauty of dark skin so well on screen. I've pointed out white under eyes and ill-matched foundation on too many movies to count, but Kate's makeup was the best out of every single person on the show.
Kate looked so stunning in every scene !!!
this is such a good point! I love how they didn't try to make them lighter, which happens ALL the time in South Asian media and bad Western stuff. And the use of kohl was just so good (especially considering the white characters don't generally wear eyeliner, but it's historically accurate for the Indians)
So many people are complaining about the "increase" of makeup its so weird
YES! I was so so so enthralled by how good the make up was. When I watched the last up I immediately went to twitter to praise the beautiful make up. I read the colors were Pat McGrath but I want to know what brand the foundation was.
Yes for REAL
It makes me happy to know that young brown girls these days, who are growing up outside South Asia, have so many women (real or fictional) they can look up to and are able to feel like their seen, like they belong.
edit: guys, I don't think bridgerton is what you should look up to for historical accuracy

i saw someone on tiktok mention how their accents would fluctuate but i noticed that it was mostly like a “code switching” thing. their hindi accents were more obvious when they were in private, and they sounded more english around english people. if that was the creative intention i think it’s an awesome little thing to pick up. i probably wouldn’t have noticed it if i didn’t relate
I loved that scene 🥰 such a sweet intimate moment
@@marvelineous omg yes you can totally notice it when Edwina and Kate speak to each other, it’s really cool!!
CLWT: A true gentleman does not need to proclaim that he is a gentleman. His behaviour makes his status clear. Actions, not words....
@@kittikats Benedict too sleep with girls
Funny when Benedict says "Brother, is there something I should know?"
That's how I interpreted it, too!
im convinced anthony's character wasn't rewritten, just recontextualized through his own perspective this season instead of daphne's. it allows for more complexity to shine through. he was presented as aloof in season one bc thats how he comes across to others while in this season his aloofness is in part cause by trauma over his father's death and him being obsessed with his family affairs, business and standing in society. his negative traits that led him into trouble in season one are also here in season two, they just seen more endearing or played up for comedic effect rather than a point contention (being headstrong and dismissing daphne's concerns over promises her to that weird dude vs. fencing with his brothers and discussing edwina and kate).
And then He chooses Edwina because he's looking for a wife who fits his list, not because he's looking for love.
so so true
@@buchbummelant8980 Agreed this is what I was thinking in the begining of season 2 and the talks with him and Violet in both seasons really cemented that to me.
Same sentiments! ❤
@@jaginaiaelectrizs6341 Absolutely!
Yea, i understood that too. Interesting that the logic doesnt make sense to her
@@jaginaiaelectrizs6341 YEESSS!!

Exactly, a lot of changes were for the better. I just wish they’d have shown Kate’s fear of storms, it was important for their bonding and development
I hope they continue with making the series better than the books, especially with Eloise’s book.
Perhaps, but I hear the sisterly relationship was made worse with the changes. Why force an ugly 'love triangle'?
this season just made me feel invested. i wasn’t invested in daphne and simon. but kate and anthony- my god they had me STRESSED

Yes!!!! I really didn’t like that there were so manyyy sex scenes. That’s why I love S2 so much more 😩
I LITERALLY SCREAMED WHEN HE SAID THAT
Yesss slow burns just hit different
This season was excellent. Less sex and more sexy.
This! Me being a darkskinned black woman this did a lot for my inner black girl too
as a dark-skinned south asian girl, i wholeheartedly agree with you
As a darker Mexican girl I wholeheartedly agree.

((if any of that even makes any sense???😅🤷♀️🤷♀️😁🤣))
Like, basically ...
Yes!!! Kdramas !!!!!
I yelled at TV so much with season 2 😂😂

"there's eight kids & one of them has to be the gay cousin, right?"
LMFAOOOO yes. accurate.
I get what you mean since there are eight siblings but there are families where everyone is straight with that same number as well.
@@anastasiaokwuchi4035 I mean I've talked with a couple of people within the fandom who would like to see that story. I don't really know how large those areas are as I'm not super duper deep within the fandom, myself... but it absolutely does exist.

Let's be honest, the chemistry and tension between Kate and Anthony was far more intense than the relationship between Daphne and Simon-
The savour was immaculate !

EXACTLY
Yes I totally agree kate and Anthony have great chemistry 🙂
Karsten Runquist talks about this in his video about Barb and Star
We need tons of more female directors female and producers ...teach young girls to consider that carear choices too
Yes, love kdramas! Can’t wait to see more romcoms on English tv.
Dude, Jonathan and Simone act like best friends, and have SUCH good chemistry in real life. It's really quite fun to watch them in interviews, as they are so close.
they're so adorable ugh
JBailey: VICOUNT(YES!)
Lol
Completely agree with you about Eloise though!
@@itsjustkarinamusic Exactly! 🙂
I was hoping for him to be gay, that was at least what I assumed the show had in mind for him.

Yea, tired of those tropes.

And by season two I mean season three. Haha
I will never recover from “You are the bane of my existence. And the object of all my desires.”
I also felt absolutely so silly at how invested I was in this couple on screen but they truly were amazing.

im so glad more people are acknowledging the casting as being the main reason for season 2's success compared to season 1! jonathan bailey's acting is just incrediblyyyyyy more nuanced than rege's in my opinion. the show was all the better for it
Kate didn't want Edwina burdened with marrying to satisfy the grandparents requirements vice love; she made that pretty clear early in the season.
yeah, i was so confused when she did not got that part, and it was super clear and understandable for kate to hide that fact from her mom and edwina.
I feel like some much of this story line goes back to Jane Austens tropes around the economics of dating and without that background knowledge of how money and marriage work it is sort of hard for people to understand the full weight of the situation.
super agree! it was literally said in the show that if kate told edwina, edwina would have married any noble man. maybe mina forgot?
She clearly didn’t watch it properly.
And yet, she still managed to burden her. Kate is an awful sister really. Her and Antony's issues are of their own making.

Don’t ya love imperialism
it pains me to hear of our colonial history as an indian

And I love Bridgerton’s family dynamic plus Daphne and Eloise were so much more likable 🥰
Precisely, Kate and Anthony's story seemed more interesting than Daphne and Simon's "To All the Boys" situation, and it's all thanks to Simone and Jonathan's electric chemistry.
i’m also glad they didn’t go overboard with making anthony and kate argue/dislike each other, so many creators take the enemies to lovers trope so far that often in the end characters getting together feels wrong… but they did it perfectly for s2 imo
no because this season really showed anthony getting educated and questioning all of his morals and i am so happy abt that
the family dynamic was so good this season! you had them bantering like season one, but you'd get little moments like the brothers fencing, benedict escorting eloise, colin giving benedict advice, daphne helping anthony, etc. that showed that familial understanding and love. it really cemented them as the core of the story.

To be fair. Watching either season of brigerton and expecting a RomCom is kinda of wild. It fits a lot better in the drama category
Really? Daphne and Simon for sure had chemistry. There wasn’t pining and building like how there was in season 2 and the whole rape thing with daphne was for sure problematic but chemistry wise, the casting people seem to have gotten it right both seasons
@@sams517 i reject this statement personally. Maybe the issue wasn't chemistry though, and more that i couldn't stand the characters together.

She was cute and fun but beyond that she had such deep compassion for everyone around her no matter how many times she was ROYALLY fucked over
💀💀💀
I found her really annoying
+ her character development ❗❗🤌🏻
I wonder if she marries that prince..
@@daisydaisy0121 Well considering how many creative and historical liberties the show has taken, I wouldn't put it past them.
I think it was a parallel between them being the oldest and head of the family, how they have to choose duty over love and the price they have to pay.
Yes, also I think at some point Kate said she was not telling her sister because she wanted her sister to choose freely and not to accept the first noble man just so she can secure her and her family financial stability.
Like, she did not want her little sister to feel pressured and maybe marry a very old person who she does not love at all just for the sake of the family
it's very telling that they took anthony's line "i burn for you" from the 2nd book and gave it to daphne and simon ... without it, they wouldn't have had anything to work with. it's mind boggling to me that a lot of people insist that simon and daphne had better chemistry than kate and anthony ...
i am a gentleman >>>> i burn for you
That was an *Anthony* line? Sheesh, how bad was the Simon and Daphne romance in the books?
@@dw7896 from what I know (haven't read the books, but have read many summaries and reviews just out of curiosity) the books are trash. Meet-cute, scandal, forced into marriage, sex, rinse, repeat. In RMB (colin and pen’s story), i find Colin so be an insufferable angry prick, i still can’t get over the scene where he grabs Pen’s arm so hard and the way he was always so angry with her and then immediately seduces her for whatever reason.
@@soniachannie Thanks for confirming, I appreciate it lol. Seeing the covers (and back covers) alone just makes me ick.
In a series, they can explore the ongoing healing process.
yea hopefully they explore that in szn 3!
Bridgerton is the definition of a "Season 2 glow up" and I'm here for it lol

It could have been such a good way to show how much more in common Kanthony had 😭
"It was embarrassing how crazy I was getting over these two fictional characters" SAME HAT I kept yelling "I AM SO FERAL RIGHT NOW" the first half of the season when I was trying to explain it to my partner
Can´t wait for the day Netflix hire Mina. 😍 Would be such a great asset.
After seeing this video clip, I am not looking forward to that day.
@@DRush76 why?
I’m looking forward to Pen and Collin’s season tho
omggg yesss....i loved all the changes they made with the netflix adaptation, i hope theres a future season where we can see a south east asian lead , i would LOVE to see kebaya and batik to be worn , that and just the food....i was soo happy watcing season 2...like kate and anthony are so cute together

How is it supposed to be pronounced, if you don't mind d me asking?
@@christinagilbert4980 The pronunciation is similar to saying "bone" or "bown" whereas Kate's actress pronounced it like "bohn"

The Bridgertons really came back to collect everyone who wasn’t on the train before and told us to get TF on board!
This is supposed to be the best book of the series though. I haven't read them, to be fair. I am a little worried about any future seasons. And I can't really imagine them having one for all of the Bridgerton children.

this season literally rewired my brain for the better and temporarily brought me back to my fangirling teenage self. there wasn't one episode this season where i didn't audibly scream bc of the tension between anthony and kate. everything about it was so perfect.

Oh man i loved it
Maybe the serie´s designers saw your video about Bridgerton and decided to do things right ✨
It already happened with Emily in Paris!
I wish!
They're still messing up with the corsets though as two actresses have said they couldn't eat in their corsets. Regency stays don't compress your stomach though nor cinch the waist. They really need to stop causing pain to their actresses.
@@natashaa43 totally with that silhouette wouldn't it be possible for most of the characters to wear bras or some shape wear sort of thing tho?

the lead actors are truly amazing, they got me to CRY (more like sob tbh) in a scene with a classical rendition on WRECKING BALL playing. Now that is true talent.
that scene was incredible omgg
Loved that they casted a darker skinned Indian for this! So much of South Asian/ Indian representation is often by lighter skinned females. The gold jewellery suited Kate so so much and she overall was great!
I think the reason they included the plot of Kate hiding the deal with the Sheffields is to further the parallels between her and Anthony. He basically did the same thing to his brother by hiding the fact that he paid the art school and letting him think he got in on merit alone. Kanthony feels the need to shield their families from the hard truths of the world so they can continue living in blissful ignorance.
When Anthony went on that monologue about how Kate is the bane of his existence I tell you I was quivering ✨ considering I absolutely hated season 1
Yes, I’m dying for a season two!

I love Taika Waititi so much!!!
The post racial society was my biggest turn off

As someone on the ace spectrum, I absolutely loved that there were less sex scenes this season!
Can't we have a fantasy imitation of a period drama where men and women can get justice for being sexually assaulted along with the impossible respect for bot black and white ethnicity even (even if it's clumsy)?
not Ace but the sex scenes in S1 were just so annoying and cringe I either Skipper or rollen my eyes and laughed
Not ace but I just get uncomfy watching sex scenes - I wayyy prefer the sexual tension created by what ISN'T shown!
That's where you're wrong about Anthony, he's still the same person. Rewatch what he did in season 1 and compare to season 2 which allows further characterization.
I agree a lot of his behavior in season 1 is explained by his arc in season 2
I'd have to agree though, he did feel like a completely different character. But it does make some sense
I agree. His plot in S1 was deliberate. The writers - for having so many characters- do a good job of giving them flaws that set them up for growth in later seasons.
But trimming the sideburns -THAT was definitely a case of “we made a mistake and now we can fix it”.
@@mariem24601 removing the sideburns was the best decision ever 🤣🤣🤣
