      Slightly more surprising than the excellent steering... is the bow thruster above the waterline. I know a cargo will take the line down... but it still makes no sense... currently

    Since the early 1800’s, some people wanted to dig a ship canal across Florida from Jacksonville to its west coast. They started it but luckily environmentalists stopped it. Most of it anyway. They ended up with a one mile long eye sore and a really nice Bass Lake!

    • @weerwolfproductions
      @weerwolfproductions 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      She was just launched, it's not a canal used for coasters like the Arklow class. The barge you see first is the biggest freight-moving type of boats on that canal. The Arklow Abbey is just getting towed towards the sea locks at the city of Delfzijl, about 35 km (and several more bridges she'd barely fit through) away. You can trace the route by putting 'Waterhuizen' in google earth and then follow 'Winschoterdiep (the canal) north to the city of Groningen, and then the 'Eemskanaal' east to Delfzijl. Shortly before Delfzijl she'll take the east arm of the canal, out the sea locks to the harbour of Delfzijl.
      History put Groningen's coaster shipyards on the Winschoterdiep canal, and as coasters got bigger after WWII, they were build to max size to fit through the bridges.

  • @hughvane

    The black/grey bollard visible mid-screen @ 5:05 - is it a rubber buffer/roller of some sort? Seems logical to me to have a sprung arrangement that would give-and-push-back if/when touched by the ship’s sides.
    Second question relates to the grinding sounds audible @ 5:20 and 5:30 - ship’s hull grating against something?

    The stern tug is presumably responsible for keeping Arklow Abbey's stern in line to go through the gap (Arklow Abbey seems to have no prop wash and therefore presumably negligible steering of her own) yet the tug captain can presumably see nothing but a big green metal wall - how does he do that?

    • @ShipSpottingNederland

    • @dickhelling3529
      @dickhelling3529 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@buggsy5 Thanks, buggsy. I thought about that, and felt it would be very challenging. My only experience is with 20 metre British narrowboats, but on British narrow canals you do a lot of the same kind of thing as the tug is doing, steering from the stern through gaps just centimetres wider than the boat, and I know how very difficult it is to instruct a novice steerer in how to 'hit the gap' - "left a bit, no not that much, go back to your right, further, no, not that far, a bit left - LEFT"... CRUNCH. British narrowboats are built to take that sort of collision without damage, but Arklow Abbey presumably isn't. I had therefore wondered if there was another way - if they do actually do it based only on oral guidance by radio, they deserve even more credit than appears from the vid.
      Oh, and I forgot the first time to say: Many thanks, ShipSpotting Nederland, great vid.

      No :-) it's an inspection ship owned (at the time, it's retired now) by the Province of Groningen, for inspecting the waterways and to serve as a guide boat to water-related events. it's basically performing escort duties here, like warning bridge operators and captains of ships and boats coming the other way so the Arklow Abbey is not forced into any sudden maneuvres. It's basically performing the same duties of what you would expect of the leading escort car of a convoi exceptionel road truck hauling outsized freight: clearing the way to make a smooth passage for the unwieldly large dead weight the tows are maneuvering through tiny spaces.
