When I was a kid of about eight years old, I used to go on there with my younger brother. The green and white tower used to be just a metal structure, similar to what you would put a water tank on. We climbed on the structure one time, while the tide was coming in. The waves were doing the same as shown in this video, but, actually a little more. We were too scared to come down from the structure, until we had figured out a pattern of the waves, and made a run for it. That was around 1950-51. We lived about an hour walk from there.
Lots of comments here by people who do not know the first thing about seamanship. That was excellent work by the skipper. Because of the very strong crosswind he had to crab across well to windward dosing the speed to get the right angle of approach. When he realised first time round that the wind would carry him too close to the leeward harbour wall he reacted in plenty of time to go round and do it again. A lesser sailor might have tried to brave it out. The tugs were placed as a safety measure to keep him off the leeward wall if needs be. They would have been ineffectual farther out.
Text book approach to the harbour, large vessel lots on windage and in those sea's very difficult to handle ,frankly if you haven't been/seen it don't comment...the keyboard jockey's would be shitting them selfs in this situation if on board.
Watching the Tugs do their work at the end was almost worth listening to that awful music along the way. The Skipper of the ship did a great job getting a good final on the breakwater. That takes a lot of knowledge of wind water and patience to work with what you've been dealt. Bravo on all parts. Good video , bad music worth watching all in.
Well i started to enjoy it from the middle onwards , i was busy watching those stupid people going down to end & nearly getting washed off , some people have no sense what so ever , great mooring up though & in those conditions too .
Pretty deep lading. That was interesting to watch, sitting here in front of my computer with a cup of hot chocolate. My compliments to all the Seamen involved in that adventure. The word "PROFFESIONAL" comes to mind.
This is a fisherman entering his home port. ( I confess to a little surprise about his first appoach, but than I am only a simple yachtsman.) No danger for pedestrians on the pier, its only a stiff breeze (I guess 5 or 6 Bft'. If it becomes dangerous the pier will be closed. What really surprises me is the abuse some people see fit to use.
It seems like the discussion is more about the behaviour of the people on the pier than of the seamanship of the captain. As far as the people on the pier goes, it shows that the fact that you are Dutch doesn't mean that you know how to behave near the sea. It is very clear that their ignorance put them into a very big risk of being swept away by the waves. As far as the captain goes, I was puzzled by the fact that he made an "extra round" before heading for port. I can only understand it so that he was waiting for the tugboats to reach the meeting point timely.
Fraai filmpje .
Very funny, to me anyway, all English comments are very complimentary to the skipper and the Dutch comments are mostly saying the skipper must be very young or inexperienced as he was so indecisive and slow.
That ship is very ‘sea kind’ dealing with seas extremely well, not rolling like a ‘pig’. The colours in the scene are very beautiful. The music is awful… totally irrelevant to seafaring. But the vessel is a real beauty.
The rule "red to right returning" does not apply at this harbor - and others in the world. Its red marker is on the left. It would seem the world navigation communities could keep to a single standard and avoid possible disasters - but no. Keep this in mind when responsible for seamanship in non US waters, and check charts worldwide before entering any harbor.
You do not know anything about boating until you learn how to handle a boat under sail. As for the people that drive motor boats, all they know is to crank up the engine and put the boat in gear.
Would love enough money to convert that to a live-aboard and enough money to run her, just cruise the oceans non-stop so to speak. Also a decent paint job.
Those people are locals and their behaviour is normal, they know when it's not safe any more. In the US a pier like this would be closed (if it would be open to public anyway) in these weather conditions to prevent claims. These people are locals and Dutch and we're used to take our own responsibility......
MrGentle... Doesn't know what he's talking about, probably American, not used to take responsibility, always blame someone els. Nothing special to walk there under these conditions
MrRCGNL... I think your analysis is spot on. Terry Johnson appears to he having very little understanding, and think it looks dangerous. His overinflated selfbelief that he knows shit causes him to come out as an expert. Quite sad actually. Sad too, the way he express himself. He may need to experience a little success in life.
Americans are not used to take their responsibility, not in their work, not in their private life. That's why there is such a f... claim culture: Always blame someone else. Dutch kids are learned to take responsibility for their own behaviour from their childhood. In addition to that, those living near the sea, learn to handle the sea. That's why Dutch children are the happiest children in the world. As was concluded by a US and UK Professors .....

Waiting for those fools that were taking a leisurely stroll along the breakwater in a gale with waves smashing over the top to come to grief ,then expect rescuers to risk their lives saving them . This is a excellent example of Darwins theory ,if only we'd stop saving the stupid.

Excellent seamanship and beautiful example of ship handling in a difficult situation, well done to that skipper.

That was superb skill by the skipper ! As a retired sea captain I've faced similar conditions and he/she showed impressive knowledge and ability.

I think the 1st approach was a try-out to check who the ship behaves in the current/wind combination

Aye, say I, from 60 + years at sea.
Mooie opnamen!
Treacherous currents around the Scheveningen approach combined with the tide and the wind make this a complicated effort, well done by captain.
It's a wonder the ship didn't end up on the rocks. The captain did an excellent job!
That's one damn pretty fishing boat.
This was awsum! I was at the edge of my seat.
Excellent Video, and a great bit of Navigation by the Captain
Shame about the music...
Love the music ❤❤❤
Great maneuvers. Congratulations to the master and the tug people. Very professional !
Beautiful ship, beautiful lines.
Impressive skills by the tug skipper there.

The Video itself is the sweet brain music.
Mooi gedaan, Oceaan!
First time i have seen that vid well done could not have done it better myself. AUSSIE
very capable captain well done wind over tide is a nightmare
Excellent work.

Oke, wauw, awesome foutage, please make more??
This makes me feel VERY MUCH better, about coming into Scheveningen.
Quite possibly THE most inappropriate music I have ever heard. Muted from the start.
Pretty deep lading. That was interesting to watch, sitting here in front of my computer with a cup of hot chocolate. My compliments to all the Seamen involved in that adventure. The word "PROFFESIONAL" comes to mind.
Reading your comment, the word SPELLING comes to mind!
Mooi opgenomen. Compliments
Natural selection my friend!

Was waiting for the "Rogue Wave" to wash them Knobheads off the jetty onto rocks on the other side.
Leuk werk

@Jack: Inderdaad, goed werk ....

Scheveningen, Nederland 🌷

Bloody music like Japanese water torture. Great vid.
Very funny, to me anyway, all English comments are very complimentary to the skipper and the Dutch comments are mostly saying the skipper must be very young or inexperienced as he was so indecisive and slow.
The tugs leave harbour just when sun and water are on 30°. There ? Too cold
She was on the bar, tugs helped her over.
Unreal. Great job!
The master off the ship needs some lessons. Or is it very shallow at the inlet?
That ship is very ‘sea kind’ dealing with seas extremely well, not rolling like a ‘pig’. The colours in the scene are very beautiful. The music is awful… totally irrelevant to seafaring. But the vessel is a real beauty.
Nice vid
Nicely done - whoever it was.
Great boat handling Skipper, poor choice of music!
Brilliant seamanship anyone who says different know absolutely shit all about. The sea and how to stay safe when dealing with her , well done cap

IALA-A and IALA-B
How about that guy wind surfing in the background!
I think it's a marker buoy. It doesn't move relative to the lighthouse. I thought the same.
I got seasick just watching this.

Pretty bizar navigating.......
Let the sound of wind and water speak for themselves instead of that terrible musak.
Would love enough money to convert that to a live-aboard and enough money to run her, just cruise the oceans non-stop so to speak. Also a decent paint job.
normale film snelheid zou meer realistisch zijn
Good
love the tides
Shit!!!!!
De muziek is heel kloten
Ben het helemaal met je eens. Past er totaal niet bij.
them walking along the pier got no brains with weather like that
What are you talking about? It's only spray!

Exemplary seamanship!

Here’s to swimming with bow-legged women!
Tugs did not offer any help when it was needed!
The tugs attended as required, inside the breakwater. They clearly weren't needed outside.

Tugs did an excellent job.
Roger Hayward so did the captain of the ship. obviously a challenging harbor entrance. 😎

From the Video it seems to me that the captain did everything right. Sorry! can't agree with your Statement!
You may live there but if you just half a brain cell God help us
jasper heijer and I thought Dutch people were more intelligent than to make a comment like this. This was brilliant seamanship..
