Were Peter Pan And Wendy In Love? - Disney Theory

  • Hey howdy hey how is everybody doing and welcome back to Disney Daily
In the 1953 classic movie Peter Pan. We meet two wonderful characters who couldn’t be more different from one another.
First, There’s Peter Pan who is the mischievous and adventurous-boy who fights pirates and befriends fairies). Who has DECIDED to never grow up and convinces others to adopt that same mantra.
THEN There Is the curious, beautiful and responsible WENDY DARLING, who although loves a good story, knows when it is time to responsible and mature. And take things seriously-
The two characters first meet one night when Peter wanders into the Darling children’s bedroom in search for his Shadow. And through out their adventure in Neverland, the two really learn not only more about one another but about themselves.
Ever since I can remember, I always wondered if there was more between Peter Pan and Wendy. I always felt there were so many little things throughout the movie that hinted at some sort of romantic interest.
As I’ve grown older and watched the film again I have had a different interpretation almost every time I’ve watched it back. Sometimes I see romance on both sides, sometimes it seems one sided and other times it seems none existent altogether-
So in Todays videos, I attempt to answer the question were Peter Pan and Wendy ever in love once and for all!

But then again my first favourite villain ever as a kid, was and still is Freddy from NOES so... yeah i guess i'm biased when it comes to hot men with either a Hook for a hand or Claws for a hand...

I feel like it takes some level of maturity to have real romantic feelings for someone, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said Wendy loved the idea of Peter rather than who he was. Since he wanted to remain a kid and not be burdened with all that comes with adulthood, including responsibilities and, yes, romance, he didn’t want to fall in love or be in love because that means growing up. Wendy being the oldest child already understood the concept of maturity and had no issue with growing up

For me and me only, in return to never land when Peter and Wendy saw each other again, it gave me the feeling/vibe of “something that could’ve been.” And the feeling that they both liked each other and yet couldn’t be together. It’s a hard and painful feeling and the only reason I felt that way was bc I have lived through it. It’s bittersweet in a way. Sweet for those good times but bitter bc it didn’t turn into something more. This is my personal take and personal feelings

I have a question. How do males and females bond with each other? I don't see how men and women can bond (especially romantically) with each other. Men and women think very differently from each other.
Women can build incredible friendships and become very close to each other in a way men can't bond, and science shows that women can bond very well with each other. Generally, women are even more social than men are. After something bad happens, a woman quickly rushes to talk to all of her female friends to get support, whereas a man can isolate himself and grief alone.
Women tend to be more emotionally intelligent, more caring, more empathic, more compassionate, more affectionate, more loyal, more nurturing, more understanding, more sympathetic, more sensitive, more kind-hearted, more peaceful, more calmer, more gentle, more expressive, more intuitive, and more outward than men are, and thus bond more with other women in a special way that they can’t with men. Men, on the other hand, are not that emotional, and thus can’t bond with other men in a special way.
Women are more comfortable being around with other women than they are with men. They have a type of bond that usually men with women won’t really have, or with men and men. Also, girls that are friends touch each other in ways that guys just don’t.

While it is true that no real romance formed between them in this movie, I've always wanted to see a what-if scenario where Peter and Wendy did grow up and found love in each other. In the film Hook, I've always felt that an opportunity was missed in having Wendy be the one who convinces Peter to stay and grow up, eventually allowing him to form romantic feelings for her and the two marrying to have a family. After all, it is a What-If idea and I've always thought that would be the case when I first heard about the premise of Hook.

  • @RavenDarkHeart1

Even as a kid I could clearly see that Peter Pan was not in love with her he doesn't really know what love is. Since he decided to stay a kid forever on the other hand Wendy you can see that she is in love with him but he doesn't feel that same way about her. If he were to love anybody it would be Tinkerbell she's always with him and she's very important to him like he specificized when the treehouse exploded

Peter did say ‘You mean the world to me more than anything’ to Tinker Bell, so I don’t think Peter loved her, he did care about her as a friend, but not in any other way, wait, no, he did love her but not in a ‘romantic’ way

    • @jamaljames9331
      @jamaljames9331 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Yeah I think it’s a little more complicated than that. I think Peter grew quite fond of Wendy, where if they spent more time together he would’ve grown to feel some form of affection.
But I think because of how much he enjoyed being a kid, he took his moments with Wendy for granted that when he reunited with her and sees that she’s an adult. It breaks his heart that any chance where they could’ve had something more meaningful was gone.
But by the end, he surprisingly handles it maturely

@@Coco_1958 that’s what I thought too, then I watched the second movie and got confused because they made tinker bell act like a jealous girlfriend and Peter Pan actively acknowledges to Wendy’s daughter that tinker bell is jealous. Like Peter Pan let’s tinker bell throw Wendys daughter off a cliff, and let’s her fall for some time, while him and Tink both laugh for a bit, and THEN he goes to catch Wendys daughter. It’s chaotic. Wendy had feelings for Peter but Peter did not/could not reciprocate those feelings because having romantic feelings would mean growning up. The age gap between Peter Wendy is really open to interpretation. Barrie was never really clear on Peter's actual age in the 1904 play and 1911 novel and also often condradicted his age because in The Little White Bird (1902) Peter is a one day old baby but in the main story his is considerably older. Any description given was merely meant to convey how childlike he was. Wendy's age was consistent though a young girl on the verge of adolescence. Realisticaly speaking this is just my subjective opinion a 12 year old girl would most likely have romantic feelings for someone of a similar age not someone way younger, so technically speaking Peter would be biologically be around 12/13. If you delve deeper into the origins of the creation of the Peter Pan character, Barrie's older brother David died at the age of 13 a day before his 14th birthday it was that tragic event that gave Barrie the concept of the boy who never grew up. This is why in most adaptations Peter is portrayed around this age even Barrie himself with original plays did this. It is never mentioned but it seems somewhat clear and this is also the reason why P.J. Hogan chose the director of the 2003 film chose to cast an actor around that age. Long story short Wendy loved or at least had a crush on Peter, Peter never liked her bav=ck because that would betray his will to never grow up and stay a boy. In chapter 10 of the novel, the novel even convey's to an extent with Peter's discomfort of growing up when he asks Wendy as reassurance that he was not the Lost Boys real father, because Peter at times could not tell the difference between pretend and reality sometimes. This is something which the 2003 film heavliy leans on. I would love to see you do the 2003 film although that film is quite clear about the romance between Peter and Wendy it still quite interesting and is the best adaptation by far.

Romantic relationships are not a beautiful thing. Romance causes a lot of problems in this world. Life is a lot better without romance than it is with it. Romantic love is not special at all, and I think that the romantic type of love isn't real.

‏‪4:38‬‏ I agree with you that he didn't think romantically at all because he doesn't know what a kiss is or ever experienced love but the reason you mentioned wasn't spot-on because he doesn't have an enough knowledge about a "mother" so him thinking that she would be his mother is because she will tell stories like how Wendy explained not the real role of a "mother"

People who think Peter wasn’t in love with Wendy, I do agree to an extent but I think it’s more complicated than that.
If Peter and Wendy spent more time together, he probably would’ve develop some form of affections. But because he enjoys being a kid and causing trouble, he took moments he shared with her for granted before realizing that any chance he could’ve had with her were gone.
When he reunites with her, he’s not just upset that she’s not longer a kid like him but he’s also heartbroken that they’ve lost that chance of ever being together in that way.

    • @icysnow57cold64

I don't think the romantic type of love is special. And I am started to think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other. I think humans should just ditch concepts like dating, marriage, and pair bonding. I feel like this world would be a much better place without romance than it is with it.
In my opinion, romantic love should not be on the highest pedestal. In my opinion, parents and siblings' family love is the strongest. Family knows who you are. Romance is fake for lots of people, put on a false persona and romance on most parts gets ugly real fast. For the reality of romance is no Disney love story.
Parents and siblings' family love is one of the strongest types of love there is. If romantic love is actually real, it would be one of the weakest types of love there is.

none can deny that there is chemistry in their relationship but as for saying that peter rejects feelings of love this is wrong he doesn't reject but rather doesn't understand them
when wendy said that she would kiss him he asked her what the kiss meant and she almost explained it in a practical way in addition, we noticed that his smile was different from usual when he was close to her, do you remember when hook threw wendy from the plank? we saw them close together peter almost to kiss her and tinkerbell didn't bother them this time. what leads to peter wanting love but he doesn't understand it is his scene with lily when she approached him and he felt ashamed but he liked it so he danced with her andwWendy began to feel jealous
peterpan doesn't know the meaning of love or kissing, but he knows that there is a special feeling he gets when he is with wendy

in the disney movie that love was not explored so much
but in live action from 2003 yes and the feelings were reciprocal
What I can say about Peter from the classic is that he doesn't know what romantic love is like when he doesn't know what a kiss is and that's why he doesn't understand Wendy's crush
but that is considered an official couple if it is even his actors from the parks who played his characters got married 💚this is my favorite disney couple💙

I think whoever made the live action 2003 just made a Wendy and Peter romance movie even if it was unintentional. In the Disney one it wasn't so focused on Wendy and Peters connection it was more focused on Peter Pan and Neverland and the lost boys and Hook and the problematic scene that's what the movie was all about but in the 2003 version it focused more on the connection and relation between Wendy and Peter and not so much of anything else. Yeah you had all the characters and storylines from the Disney version but for the most part it focused on Wendy and Peter and "the kiss" that everyone was talking about the whole movie. Even if it was intentional or not the 2003 is basically a Peter and Wendy love story

Maybe its just me, but the original novel I found extremely depressing, and I simply could not read it again. I genuinely think Disney improved upon the story in that sense, though I am sure some people will be annoyed at me for saying so!
In terms of Wendy's kiss in the movie, I sort of lean towards the fact that she's trying to kiss him in gratitude in the way she thinks kisses are done; I agree with your analysis of the scene! In terms of Tiger Lily, it could just be jealousy in the sense that Peter is again proving himself to be not the person she hopes he would be, and is being rather silly. Or just jealous of the fact that another pretty girl is there and getting attention; children, even mature ones, aren't known for being fair with their emotions.
I like your conclusion about her perhaps hoping he could be something he isn't and giving up on the idea; I suspect that her husband from the sequel, Edward, is exactly the kind of man she needed and wanted. He seems to enjoy her stories, is emotionally close to the children so he has kept his inner child intact, yet is also caring and mature. I would have loved to see more of their courtship.

Peter Pan is one of my favorite Disney Classics and I had learned something new. About to reboot Peter Pan.
Peter Pan did had his mom and father but they were murdered by a pirate named Blackbeard sir Edward Teach. And the dark origin story about the truth or Peter Pan's origin what was revealed in the new movie of pan
That was years later and BBY Cannon. Once you get into the original trilogy. It's one of the best movies of all time of Disney animation in a instant classic film.
My favorite part about the movie is Peter Pan's Revival of Captain James Hook. How did he get his hand cut off what made him become the captain of the Joey Rogers.
I do like the Peter Pan relationship with Wendy which is the dude love each other. My Forge the bond. It is and it makes me very sad Peter Pan doesn't have his mom and dad to care for him because of what Blackbeard did. To the fairy kingdom and took everything what was precious to Peter Pan.
My favorite part of the movie pan is when he Embraces his true power of flight. Everybody did a great job by making a movie and outstanding performance from everybody to make a great Disney classic film to me I think Peter Pan will always be my number one favorite.

I believe that he loved her as a friend and as a mother figure, but wasn't in love with her, like she'd hoped, in the Disney animated film. Even though they were close in age, she was more mature, and understood love better than he did, especially since he refused to grow up. She had a crush on him, but he couldn't understand that. No one in my family saw the straight-to-video sequel, but we did see Hook, and that movie had suggested that to him, a kiss was represented by a thimble, which was his gift to Wendy. He did come to visit her frequently in that movie, but they had remained lifelong friends, and it was her daughter, Moira, that he had fallen for. When he said to Wendy that he wanted to kiss her, she had told him not to give her any buttons or thimbles, and that Moira would believe that she couldn't keep him. He responded that he wanted to give her a real kiss, and this movie had suggested that he was, in fact, ready to grow up.
I've also seen the 2003 movie, which had suggested that there was more of a romantic storyline between them. But I can see why the original book and play wouldn't have allowed for a romantic plotline, as you said, since he was, in fact, too young for her.

And their relationship seems more like that of a MOTHER and SON (maternal) than one a romantic couple as Wendy would wanted 😓,but her maternal attitude did not help much and she was mistreated by Peter 😞,and yet believed in him 😔

Peter had more chemistry with Tiger Lily than Wendy in the film, lol.

Well Wendy was more like a MOTHER from Peter than anything else,on top of that Peter treated her badly and Wendy still love him 😶💀,it’s not surprising 😓

@@RosyLanderos Yeah, as it seems that aspect from the original novel was carried over into the Disney adaptation, lol.

Who is Wendy to Peter? I’m watching Hook again and I’m confused to who she is..

    • @RosyLanderos
      @RosyLanderos 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Like a MOTHER and always has been,Peter never fell in love with Wendy because his maternal attitude that prevent him from seeing her in any other way and in the movie Hook,Wendy being a grandmother used his non-canonical granddaughter Moira(and her true name in the original book is Margaret but well) as a replacement for her while she was asleep 😶,being physically the same as Wendy but from another year (1961) to fulfill her dream frustred with being her partner through a descendant 😓,Wendy manipulated Peter into staying with the granddaughter with excuses and achieving her goal and having Peter abandon everyone in Neverland, especially Tink 😔
      I hate that scene 💔.

Still Pan end up to moira 🙂

    • @RosyLanderos
      @RosyLanderos 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

But using her like as a copy/replacement of Wendy and not loving her for being herself 😞,but for being and a identical copy of a relative or someone else and not knowing anything about Jane (Wendy’s daughter and “Moira’s” mother) above all and getting together as a forced marriage planned by Peter and Wendy without her never agreeing 😣.
Account while she was asleep and unconsciously kissed without her consent and shamelessly Peter abandoning everyone especially TinkerBell for a stranger 😢,for fear it seeing Wendy older of dead and from using the granddaugther as a replacement for her without knowing of she was with someone else or without having her own opinion 🙁,taking advantage of being asleep for the plan ☹️.
And even her arranged children(Jack and Maggie) did not inherit the Peter’s powers such a flying to the point of being completely useless, specially the little girl (Maggie)who barely exists and the eldest son (Jack) being used for selfish purpose such as her mother Moira, and the worst thing is,not even Moira exist in the original book and the official granddaugther’s name is Margaret and not Moira, she is almost called one of Wendy’s names and the physical resemblace is the same as her, making more evident the sad purpose of her character as a replacement for Wendy and not being loved for being her 😢💔.
Sorry for long context,I have a love/hate towarsd the movie, hating Peter,Wendy and a little bit of Moira in the signature that “earned her love by doing nothing and being used” and fulfilling Wendy’s frustred dream that Peter stays with her using a descendant for it 😢😣
In short, they both wanted to be together but Wendy’s age and growth was a impediment and to do they used someone for selfish purposes and because of a frustrated love they never could, and there many things went wrong throughout the movie, and TinkerBell had something to do with the misfortunes of the story 🤔,from watching Peter for 30 years (1961-1991) after abandoning her to kidnapping the arrangled children along with Hook and conveniently appearing right after all 😶,for revenge and that Peter abandons the Darling’s forever and back NeverLand and forgets about thems and the end failing and redeeming

I don't think the romantic type of love is special. And I am started to think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other, while most platonic best friends remain friends until death.
I think that having a platonic best friend is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse is. Having someone who's like a sibling to you is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse. Also, you are more likely to be much more closer to someone who's like a brother or sister to you than you would be with a romantic partner or spouse.
People tend to fight with their partner or spouse a lot more than they do with a platonic best friend, and you never fight with your best friend the way you fight with your partner or spouse. Partners and spouses are just temporary. If you break up or divorce them, it's hard to go back to them. With your platonic best friend, you're going to make things work, because they are your best friend, they are your go to partner. It's always easier to make amends with them than it is with a romantic partner or spouse.
