Fanatec Podium DD Wheelbase - Review - The Mainstream Direct Drive Wheel

  • Fanatec have finally entered the high end wheel market of direct drive wheels. Back in time it was Thrustmaster, Logitech and Fanatec that were known as the mainstream wheel makers. But with the popularity of the direct drive wheel market, it is Fanatec who has first joined the ranks.
This is the review of the Fanatec Podium DD2 Wheelbase. This is the flagship model from Fanatec and the wheel can produce a monster 25 nm of power at a high refresh rate of speed. Unlike the Direct Drive wheels available, the Podium is actually backwards compatible and will allow for the use of all Fanatec wheel rims. The DD2 also has not only carried over features from the clubsport line in software but have added to it with more features and more control over the wheel.

One of the best, objective reviews of a Fanatec DD wheel base. I have been happily using Fanatec CSR wheel and Elite pedals for the past 10 years, so I am firmly committed to sticking with Fanatec. While I will be buying a DD1, for now I am happy to wait. Thank you, Sean.

I Disagree with him saying there is no need to upgrade from 2.5... What a difference I feel from the two. If you want to feel everything and catch slides quicker, this is the base to use.

I never had the grounding issue. I upgraded from a V2 base and already owned several rims, so this was a no brainer direct drive option for me.

You dont have that issue with the dd1 or dd2 because fanatec specirically designed it so you dont have to ground it lol its the only dd wheel thats made this way so far and no chance of cstching fire its the safest dd wheel and most versatile

Shaun , I do want to mention that I do find there is one noticeable difference between the clubsport 2.5 wheelbase and the DD wheel base . The DD has noticeable better detail that is lost in the belt drives flex/stretch of the 2.5 .... to be clear the 2.5 is still the best belt drive and it’s not far off from a DD drive but other than a torque rating difference i did notice better details in the force feed back , road surface , rumble strips etc .... 👍

It’s strange that you had such a tough time with the quick release. Mine fits nice and snug but isn’t all that difficult to remove. I think if your sim rig wasn’t flexing so much it might reduce your issues. Also I’m running the Formula V2 and the Forza Xbox universal wheels.

He had that problem with the original Formula wheel. I had the same experience. They changed the tolerances slightly from the very first fanatec qr products. The only solution was that they sent me a new qr for my old formula wheel, which I then changed myself. It works perfectly now and I was impressed by the fast customer service.

His decision to use spit as lube is just silly. No wonder he can't take it off properly, because it would dry up and almost acts like a little glue. He'd better use something else.

He compares the DD1 to DD2 and says the difference is mainly power. He fails to mention that the DD1 has 3 year warranty vs 5 year for DD2. Upgrading to 5 years is $120. The DD2 also comes with kill switch and it is a $100 option for DD1. So the difference is only $80 with those options.

If you tap the power button on the E Stop it’ll kill the torque on the wheel. I just wish that functionality was part of the actual kill button.
I too struggle with changing wheels. It’s so bad I barely do it. That sucks cause I like using a 1:1 wheel with the car I’m driving.

Very difficult question. I had both and was absolutely happy with both of them. You don't need a DD1 over a CSL Elite. But for me it was worth upgrading because I sometimes love to run very high FFB. Also the high amount of detail and the information of weight transfer are amazing at the DD1.

To reduce the "tug o war" with the wheel rim use silicone grease. It's what Fanatec recommends and it works great! I had the same issue with my DD1 and the silicone grease solved the problem. I'm very happy with the upgrade from the CSW V2.5!

Ok I feel better after seeing Shawn's video and seeing his RSeat S1's wheel deck flex. I have the same rig and it's my only complaint about it - there is definitely up and down travel of the wheel deck that you don't have a with a side mounted 80/20 system. I plan on posting a review of the S1 some time soon.

@@fifeauctions18 You're a lucky guy! There are hundreds of stories on the net that are more like mine and less like yours.
I've had a SQ1.5 that had to go back after 2 months, a CSW 2.5 and Universal Hub for Xbox that had to go back after 4 months. They lost that last bit, and told me it was my fault, and I'd have to buy another.
I think their kit is fantastic when it works, but when it doesn't - and that seems to be very common - you are in a world of pain.

I'm actually looking to sell my old CSR wheel and CSR elite pedals. Almost 10 years old and they still work perfectly.
Point of this - Fanatec products have worked perfectly for me and the OP's comment is redundant.
