This is why Splinter was a perfect father figure for the audience.

You explained more about The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles than any Turtle Fan I've ever met.

I liked this version of Splinter more than the original, as he was shown to be a great person and always understanding of his turtle students. There wasn't so much of a father/son connection simply because Splinter wanted to raise the turtles as students of ninjitsu, although the fatherhood part would have gone without saying since he's been with them since they were little. The 2012 series shows this directly, although you could say that version of Splinter was looking for a replacement to his daughter. Plus that Splinter didn't really get his hands dirty by joining the turtles until fairly late in the series - the 87 Splinter would join them quite often, and helped solve the villain/problem of the day almost as much. Quirx in particular would have kept attacking others if Splinter wasn't there to pretend to be his deceased father. April also had a lot of screentime, and it wasn't as a damsel in distress like people like to pretend. Sure she'd be captured by Shredder or the bad guys, but that's because she's sticking her nose into things while looking for a big story. I didn't really care for the Red Sky episodes, especially Carter who felt like he was just thrown in there to have a grown-up Zack; I also didn't like Zack, I don't need to "see myself" in a character, I just want to see the Ninja Turtles fight Shredder.
I wouldn't take the NES game as canon though. Lots of games during that time had mistranslations, like how we got a white Kirby instead of pink and the Birdo and Ostrich name mixup.

I wouldn't say the 2012 Splinter was looking to replace his old family. More like he wanted to redeem himself for not being the dedicated family man he could've been before

I like the '87 version of how Splinter came to be. But I also liked that the 1990 movie was more consistent with the comics story of Splinter.

Making Splinter and Hamato Yoshi the same person is one of the improvements that the '87 series made to the TMNT mythos; it just makes way more sense.
I also prefer Splinter and the Turtles to have a more formal relationship as teacher and students; it's very appropriate and professional for a ninja clan.

I know some people only prefer the original pet rat Splinter, some only perfer the Hamato Yoshi one. I love both takes on the character.

I have ideas for some Halloween specials this year, one character, one story arc: Quarry from 2003 and the monster/horror arc involving Savanti Romero from the 2012 series.

Splinter was wise to choose to stay as a rat. No one is civil in New York anymore. Not to mention, that episode hits differently now.

I always preferred the origin story where splinter starts as a rat then gets mutated
I just find it a little more believable
I know it’s a universe with mutants running around and super powers and stuff but i like when they try there best to make it make sense instead of being like just roll with it
I can just roll with a lot but if they can make it believable it’s greatly appreciated

    • @JanetStarChild

I disagree; Splinter being originally human works better.
A ninja master from the start makes more sense than a rat somehow learning ninjutsu by crudely mimicking his master from afar (hell of a trick if any rat can do that).
Also, Splinter being as wise as he is would require a long life of experience. If he was a rat from the start, Splinter would only be about three years older than the Turtles.
Also, how would the Turtles have weapons and money unless Yoshi had brought these things with him? We could assume that they live off of Yoshi's life savings sparingly. A normal rat has no belongings.
Also, Splinter being able to read and write Japanese and English makes sense as a human. As a normal rat, Splinter would be illiterate and only recognize a few words; so, it kills the idea of Splinter naming the Turtles from a renaissance book.
