I just found these bags and was considering doing something just like this with my own bag, great video! Gave me the confidence I could do it as well :)
Note there's now the Vario PS pannier by ortlieb. It is the most elegant pannier-backpack I found. Just got mine and it very cool. I really like this solution though. Well done.
The Ortlieb Vario PS will come out in January 2022 with an easier switch function (ie clip to uncover the brackets to clip and cover the backpack function and vice versa).
Beautiful. And I still don't understand why bag companies like Ortlieb haven't implemented something like this. Maybe they make more profit by dividing their product lines. Just one tip: The bottom rail thingy is often annoying to fit to the rear rack (at least in my experience). I'm now using a piece from an Decathlon bag that secures the bag to the rail from the top, exactly between two hooks. Check "Elops 900 trolley". I wish other bag manufacturers could use such simple and effective parts instead of bottom rails.
Yeah. I think they rather sell two products instead of one. The whole trolley you’ve mentioned is quite cool. I’m just not convinced by the quality of Decathlon, do you know a similar product, from another brand?
@@Gabi-zh4lh The only instance of a pannier-trolley I've ever seen is the Decathlon one, unfortunately. The quality of Decathlon's bike bags is actually very good but for sure can't match with Ortlieb's, as none of the brands I saw in the market can't match either :) After spending three years of heavy use in the city with my Decathlon panniers (I have 4 bags of three different models) I ended up mounting Ortlieb hooks and now happier than ever. Half of the Ortlieb price and weight and still good enough.
Hey! Not at all. I‘m just using it in the city though, under all weather conditions. I never went on a 2 week bike trip with it. But I can’t imagine that would change anything.
Hi Gabi, great video! I want to do exactly the same! Do you think i can do the ql3.1 on the velocity bag? seem like there isnt enough part to do ql3.1...
This is just what I was looking for! I want to make a bag that fits on both my Brompton and the rear rack on my Surly. I've been using the Ortlieb OfficeBag Ql3.1, do you think this project would work with the QL3.1 system?
not sure tbh - you say you're using the Ortlieb Office Bag already - does it fit the rear rack on your brompton? I would probably go with an earlier QL version from Ortlieb so you dont need any additional stuff on your rear rack.
Ah - you want to do that with a new bag! now i get it. I just tried the height on a brompton with my old QL system and it worked. Not sure how it would be with a QL3, because of that additional stuff that you need to mount on the rear rack
@@Gabi-zh4lh I don't have a rear rack but am thinking of getting one. The problem is if I mount it on the back, it might place too much weight on the rear wheel plus I've heard from others it makes cornering very difficult, as in the pannier hits the ground. Right now I have it set up so that the Office Bag QL3.1 is mounted to a standard Brompton luggage carrier. It's great while on the bike but kind of sucks walking from class to class, so I'm looking for something great for both on and off the bike. While looking up the Velocity, I came across your excellent video.
@@orenaofer Yes - i just put it on the normal rear racket of the brompton. The big plus is (the way i did the bag) that you can decide yourself how high on the bag you mount your hooks, so you basically can adjust the height of your bag yourself before finalising it. It even worked with the height of my hooks although i didn't even plan it for a brompton. i just tried it for fun in a store. but if you put the hooks even lower on the bag you won't have problems going around corners.
Supet Video, danke. Eine Frage/Idee: Würde das auch mit Ortlieb QL3.1 funktionieren. Dann hätte man schmalere Elemente am Rucksack. Keine hervorstehenden Haken.
Hi. Ja, das sollte gehen. Ich persönlich mag das ursprüngliche System etwas mehr, aber wenn es einem optisch besser gefällt, dann wäre das sicher ne gute Möglichkeit.
Hi! Thanks - but not really. With the Vario you always have to transform between bikebag and backpack. That's not very useful when you're swichting all the time in the city between bike and train and walking and cycling. I thought about getting the Vario but it takes just too much time 🤷🏻♂
@@Gabi-zh4lh Yeah I guess it's kind-of annoying. It looks pretty quick on the video they released though (th-cam.com/video/vWAAsMdcoDk/w-d-xo.html). But now that I think of it, I probably wouldn't have enough patience for it. 😂 Maybe I'll give your design a try!
Hahaha. @@Gabi-zh4lh Did you see the Ortlieb Vario PS I linked? I think it's different from what you have in mind. It's only available in 2022 (for like 185 euros).

you are an absolute legend. Thank you so much for this!!
Vielen Dank für das Video. Habe das nachgebaut und finde es sehr gut.
Sehr gut! Freut mich dass es geklappt hat :) Genau dafür habe ich das Video gemacht :)
very cool - ortlieb should be selling this

I wonder if the Arkel CamLock system would work with this modification?
Just made one my selfe :)
Nice! Before or after watching this XD
@@Gabi-zh4lh after! The velocity backpack is perfect for this modification. thanks!

Do you think it’s worth cutting a rubber gasket, or perhaps washes to actors seals to waterproof it more?
Have you had any issues with water proofing since doing this?

Nice work!! Can anyone please list the products that he used for this? I'm having a hard time finding them

Not yet :) I just feel no one wants to pay for that amount of time I would need to invest. So i rather made this tutorial, so people get inspired :)

Is the bag still waterproof after the modifications?
Yep, it still is for me.
It makes you wonder why Ortleib doesn’t do this
For the handle, there is a 16mm, 18mm and 20mm version. Which one did you take?
Ah I see, you used 16mm.
I cannot find the bracket.
I just checked their page and it’s still there.where did you look for it?
I'm going to give it a try. Waiting for response from Orlieb on the corners.
AWESOME dude. Looks like Ortlieb is copying you with the Ortlieb Vario PS.
