Zion National Park's HooDoo City

  • Long time no see! We recently took a trip to Zion at the beginning of the busy season. And rather than fight the crowds that literally shut down the main canyon before dawn we had plans to explore the equally impressive areas in other parts of the park.
One of the most underrated is the Kolob Terrace Road. A gorgeous drive on it's own with lots of little places to explore, but searching online I found a new place I'd never seen or heard others talking about before. Turns out it's an adult playground to explore.
A relatively short trail it's perfect for taking things slow and soaking in the views and details of the land around you instead of racing to the top of some packed overlook.
The terrain is a bit delicate and there are dropoffs so it's not the best place for young kids. But good for groups that are old enough how to best protect the land and themselves.

I absolutely took my father for granted and didn’t realize it until he was gone and all that was left was a mountain of things left unsaid. Doesn’t look like you made this mistake. Terribly
Sorry for your loss. Thanks for taking the time to do a proper video that features the location first.

Angels Landing is so overrated. I went to see what all the hype was about but hiked the West Rim trail instead. There wasn't anyone on it.

I did the Kolob canyons of West Zion and it was wonderful... no crowds at all... I will definitely be back...

The valley is beautiful, but there is so much more to see if you venture off the beaten path. Just simply hiking past Scout's Landing up to the West Rim is totally amazing and the crowds thin to nothing after a mile past it. But so much in the rest of the park! Thank you for this!

Hey Dustin! When I visit this spot it will be a full moon and I was hoping to do some stargazing. I see you mention delicate terrain and drop offs and so was wondering if this is an absolutely stupid thing to do considering this? I am travelling from Australia where bush walking at night is unheard of but our national park terrain is very different so don't really know if evening hikes are common place/safe to do in places like this. Any advice? Thanks!

What I enjoyed most about this video is seeing that you appear to have someone special in your life to share your explorations with.

It’s good to know there’s more to see in the park.
I’ve hiked Angels & the Narrows. They were spectacular, but the crowds forced me to the decision never to return. (to the Valley anyway) Now I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of the park. Thanks!

Great to see you're back! Soon it'll be 22 years since my father passed. RIP. I find it ironic that where you go often times is a place I have gone to or will go to. When I drove back from LA last Christmas I decided I wanted to check out Kolob Terrace and then take the Carmel Tunnel to a motel in Kanab. I've spent a long time scouring this road on Google Maps and was excited to finally check it out, but weather and darkness had other plans, though the snowbound landscape was quite captivating! Anyways the snowfall became too thick, the road too insanely deep with snow and I had to turn back as darkness began to fall. So like you some day I will go back and explore more of this road. Have you seen how this road or a spur of it approaches the hoodoo style outcrops similar to Cedar Breaks that lies south-ish of Duck Creek? Now I gotta go back to Google Maps and explore it again!

That sounds like an adventure. Driving on something of these winding road in the snow could be terrifying.
I know these outcrops you mention I'm not sure how's close this road get to them. But I'd loved to check it out to see.

I'm working on it. I still have to work around the 9-5. 😉
