What a great reaction guys! I'm glad you like them, particularly Sorry Somehow. I love both songs and both groups. They really deserve to feature in the channel. Keep rocking!
Wow! Finally, Bob Mould in this channel! Actually, in any channel. One of the greats, no doubt about it. Thanks for the great reaction, as always. Thanks to Fran for bringing these two fantastic bands. I love Sorry Somehow too. I'm huge fan of Mould, including his solo work. The late Grant Hart has some great albums too. But Hüsker Dü and Sugar deserve a deep dive.
Husker Du one of those rare bands with two complete, accomplished songwriters and visionaries. Inevitably, this usually ends up leading to dissension, but when these two guys were firing on all cylinders in a complementary fashion, it was extremely powerful...
If I Can't Change Your Mind video showcased many out of the mainstream couples behaving normally and being smootchy on camera to each other. One of the first videos to introduce imagery that bucked the het-norm thing.
The loudest concert I ever heard was Sugar at First Ave. It was probably 140 dB. My organs jiggled at the intensity. My guts and innards and organs resonated and reverberated. It was so effing loud!!! It was life changing. Vaguely unpleasant and everything I ever wanted. Top two live shows ever.
The Lennon/McCartney of punk/alternative rock. Both Mould and Hart did great things in Husker Du and their work that followed. Each had a unique way when it came to crafting songs. Mould has been by far the more visible/successful post-Husker Du, but Hart's work in the 2000s until his death was remarkable as well. Copper Blue by Sugar is a tremendous record. Once you get a taste of what all these players had to offer, there really is no going wrong with any of it.
For a more pensive Bob Mould check out his 'Workbook' album. His first after Husker Du broke up and one of 2 solo albums before Sugar started. I can't recommend him enough. Without Husker Du there would be no 90's alt music.
Never was a big Husker Du fan , love the 2 Sugar albums I have , Cooper Blue and File under: Easy listening. If I Can’t change your mind is probably the poppiest track on both those albums. Sugar drummer Malcom Travis was in two popular Boston bands , Human Sexual Response and The Zulus, Bob Mould produced The Zulus only major label lp, for anyone looking for useless trivia.
Hi Kevin, I'm sure Sugar had a 3rd album too. Also, have you ever heard Your Favourite Trainwreck album by Your Favourite Trainwreck? If you like Sugar I think you'd love that 👍
Dudes thank you so much hearing these songs again Far out tell ya what I'm stoked as proud of the 14/15 year old me that took me on a punk rock adventure that i still haven't found my way out of and don't really care to .... haha I forgot to have my annual shower on Xmas morning but I did change my socks this year left sock onto right foot right sock into left foot 💩🦨🤮
I have both albums - I found Sugar when in my local music shop after falling in love with Huskerduu after listening to Candy apple Grey- and they r 2 of my favourite records
Great song choices by Fran! I was seriously considering creating a Top 10 for this channel for Hüsker Dü, one of the most influential punk rock/alt. rock bands in 80's (it will happen, but not next month as I have other things planned for that). Sorry Somehow would probably be one of the songs, but since it has now been reacted to here, I get an opportunity to select another one of their great songs (there are a lot to choose from!). It's funny that Trey mentions The Replacements for comparison, as they were both pretty big in the Minneapolis underground scene in the 1980's and had a lot in common in that they started off being very noisy and hardcore before gradually introducing melodies and slowing things down, moving to major labels and then disbanding before they really made it big. Nirvana's Krist Novoselic has been quoted for saying that Nirvana owed a lot to the Huskers, as they really introduced the combination of noisy punk rock and pop songs, which made Nirvana as big as they became. Hüsker Dü had done it all before them. Take one dose of Hüsker Dü and one dose of Pixies, mix it and you have the formula for Nirvana...
Fran strikes again! Both bands feature Bob Mould. While I like Husker Du, I prefer the melodic power of Sugar. Bob Mould just strikes the right chord with me time after time. ANYTHING off of Sugar's epic album "Copper Blue" is fantastic... but if I had to pick one track to pick: The Slim. It's a powerhouse of emotions packed into one amazing song, about separating with someone, as well. Cheers!
Hey John. I thought about The Slim, instead of If I Can't... The fact that the lyrics were the other side of the coin to Sorry Somehow was what made me decide, as the guys so fantastically noticed
I have Husker Du's Candy Apple Grey and Warehouse Songs And Stories and they are nuggets of true gems within the two albums. I would love to but New Day Rising, the song to the NDR album of the same name is quite different as in quite hardcore.
The day Hüsker Dü broke up, I lost a little bit of my soul. But then Bob and Grant each released a solo album that year. I listened to both and thought to myself, “Well, this is pretty good, too…” It was like having two Christmases! Enjoyed this!
I discovered Husker Du in the early 80s and saw them play live in London twice in 1985. "Sorry somehow" isn't particularly representative of most of their material, which was more raucous and intense on their first 3 albums. I liked Sugar but IMHO they never achieved the artistic heights of Husker Du even though they were more commercially successful.
Interesting choices. Bob Mould is the guitarist in both bands, but the creative control was shared more in the first band than in Sugar. Mould had virtually all of the creative control in Sugar. These for a long time were my go-to bands. I've seen Mould live twice. They were both great and creative shows.
Thanks for reacting to the great Hukser Du. An amazing and incredibly influential band. "Sorry Somehow" is not even close to their best stuff.. not even close.
Shawn and Trey, I'm not familiar with these artists. The first song is a rocking song with a vocal delivery and lyrics that has an angst and frustration that is felt in the performance. The singer is letting out his feelings. The second song is a very upbeat high energy song. The tempo is brisk, good guitar. Good insight Trey on the vocal, good advice Shawn on relationships. Very good comments on each song by you guys. You both chose the first song as the winner of this battle and I agree, I also chose the first song as the winner. A very upbeat energetic song battle Fran.

"He just wants her out of his life." Yeah ... "her." "She's leaving, but he's begging her to stay." Sure ... "her." I'm not even criticizing. How could I, when it's the same assumption I (and others ... even my gay friends) made back in the 1980s? It was, after all VERY rare for gay rock musicians to be publicly out, as both Bob and Grant would be in the 1990s. A change for the better, better late than never. Great reaction, as always, guys!
It happens. We know now this is 3 years old. Have a top 10 and tons of their stuff up now. Funny when you literally have 3000 vids up from time to time you mess up a pronunciation
Nice that you featured this two great artists, but you failed. Mediocre Springsteen/ Husker Du effort vs a brilliant tribute to 60's British invasion music by Sugar. Thanks for the video but you miss the point of music.
lol YOU missed the point, it is a battle brought by a Patron and as far as us missing the point of music I think nearly 1200 videos and 15,000 subs might say otherwise. Crawl back under the rock you came from troll. Peace
