Good to see the Miata getting some love again. Fuel stuff is always sketchy, not looking forward to doing this job when the time comes. But it doesn't look too too bad from how y'all did it.
You don't use but connectors in a fuel tank environment. You use wire heat shrink wrap after you solder the two wires together. Make sure you twist the two wires together before soldering.
