- Traditional Latin Mass filmed on Easter Sunday in 1941 at Our Lady of Sorrows church in Chicago. The film presents the ceremonies of the Missa Solemnis or Solemn High Mass in full detail with narration by then-Mgr. Fulton J. Sheen. Celebrated by Rev. J. R. Keane of the Order of Servites (hence the white habits and cowls), the ceremonies are accompanied by a full polyphonic choir, orchestra, and fifty Gregorian Chanters.
The attention to detail in the ceremonies is impressive. Notice, for example, how the servers and ministers always take great care to move in order. Notice too that the servers are all almost identical in height. The Ordinary of the Mass, composed by Rev. Edwin V. Hoover, while pleasant in places, is very much a reflection of its time. The Proper on the other hand is timeless and sung admirably by a healthy throng of Seminarians from Mundelein, Illinois.
Unfortunately due to size restrictions at TH-cam around 20 mins have been cut from the original, however, I hope to upload a full version somewhere soon. In addition to the cuts I have added new captions and edited the opening credits which had deteriorated in the original. Other than this the film remains largely unchanged. Apologies for the error in the captions for the two parts of the Mass (software). The first part is of couse the Mass of the Catechumens, the second is the Mass of the Faithful.

This form of the Mass is still offered within the Church as the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

@@andrewburch3694 Some priests even offer the Masses in Holy Week with the pre-1955 rubrics. In short, while the Tridentine Rite somewhat became extinct after the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s there were already some changes in the rubrics in the 1940s and 1950s. So the Mass in 1940 looked a bit different than the same Mass just before the Council.
Please give us our Church back, please give us back our mass.

@@ladykladyk769 You can get a missal, they are rather cheap, costing around 70 dollars, it is well worth it, the full text of the Mass is there, although there is page flipping to go through. There are missal tutorials here on youtube.

Find your nearest FSSP Apostolate, I'm blessed to have two Latin Mass churches within a half hour of me, both of which are staffed by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, in full communion with Rome.
In fact, I am moving 1000 miies next week to be close to a FSSP church and an opportunity to serve, not as a nun, (I"m 70) but in an oblate-type capacity under a sister. I've lived here for 20 years, driving 43 miles to the nearest independent traditional mass - FSSP over 100 away, SSPX 93 miles away. My original plan was to die here (20 years from now) in this nice double-wide mobile home in a 55+ park in the deep south; but I was called, kicking, screaming, and refusing for five years, to do this. Called. There is no making up an actual CALL, though every bit of my ego-self fought to refuse. Refusal I finally realized would be like hell. I'll be living in an old single-wide near the church; giving up my precious pillow-top bed, almost all my stuff - TV, and so on...I'm scared but honestly I caN't wait. I feel so blessed. Please pray for me, and I for you.
Archbishop Sheen's voice is absolutely glorious. It's angelic.

This particular Church in Chicago still does the Tridentine Mass. Praise God!
And a lovely Servite Basilica it is aswell!
The basilica is still open and staffed by the Servite priests and brothers, but they do not offer Holy Mass in the Tridentine rite and they haven't done so since the 1960's.

What a gem! I recently started attending the TLM during the pandemic lockdown. I am in awe with it and sad to have known I was robbed of this exquisite Mass by attending the the Novus Ordo.✝️⛪️

Asking for prayers of all who are watching this very holy Catholic holy Latin Mass, have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and if it is, it's a very painful and huge discomfort condition and its causing my nervous system to go crazy and sends me into a frenzy to which can be at times terrifying, if it were not 4 the Grace of almighty God I would try & end my life somehow because you think that you are going mad as something feels like it is pressing down on the whole nervous system, I only wish to God that I could find a healing Priest of whom celebrates only this kind of very holy only True Catholic Holy Latin Mass, as I did when I wa just 7 years old and within 2 mins or so of a Vatican 1 Latin holy Priest placing his hand upon this tiny little girl, the fever and high temperature subsided and I leapt up and was miraculously healed, if anyone knows of such a Priest I would fly to any part of the world for his healing

Katherine Windsor I swear the guitars as horrid. I was born after the change, I never got to experience this old mass. I hear my grandmother talk of how the old mass felt holier, and I blame the change to be the reason she no longer goes. At my local church, there is a man who plays a guitar and piano for the Holy Songs. I feel none of the Fear of God I should when he plays. Nothing like this video.

Magnificent! I grew up with this Holy Catholic Mass and Faith and Priesthood and will never be otherwise, than a traditional Catholic as Christ taught us. With this Mass we had the best life on this earth that could be attained. Without it comes Chaos, immorality, and disaster, families break up and so on. Also great pain and suffering in every aspect of life. Life without the True Mass everything is Fruitless. See what happened when they changed this in 1964..... never the same again and never will be. Priests were full of grace and just listen to this liturgy, strong and virile with the full grace of God pouring out. Music that is heavenly and sacraments full of God's Sanctifying Grace for all who would come to take part in adoring our Mighty God in Heaven. Purity, dignity, obedience to God and discipline of ourselves to be the best we can be. Holy, Reverend and and Christ bearers.

THIS is the Mass. Holy and reverent. Look where we are today. The contrast is tragic. We the laity, need to step forward. Venerable Fulton Sheen called us to arms all those years ago.

When I first saw this recording several years ago on VHS, it gave me shivers--but it wasn't as fuzzy as this copy. So beautiful! And properly Catholic.
This was filmed in Mundelein, Illinois.

Rt. Reverand James Mary Keane, celebrant of this Holy Mass, was born to Irish immigrant parents in 1901. His mother died at 30 years old when he was five years old. He became a Servite and spent the rest of his life promoting compassion for the Sorrowful Mother of Christ. He began the Perpetual Novena of the Mother of Sorrows at the Servite Basilica in Chicago in her honor.
In 1947, he went to County Tyrone Ireland, and opened a Servite Monastery there. He served at this monastery until his death in 1975.
May he rest in peace.
I wonder what happened to all the seminarians singing in the chior at this Mass. All hell busted loose 19 years later.
I certainly miss the sacredness and solemnity of the High Mass on Easter Sunday. The world has crept in the Church, it is less faithful to Christ, in my opinion.
The Catholic Church was infiltrated a long, long time ago. This is why everything was changed. If you do a search on the "Alta Vendita" you will find that in the 1800's their plan was to infiltrate the Catholic Church and to gradually, so gradually CHANGE what was once Catholic and to someday,"put their own man on the throne." That day came when Pope Pius XII died. Since that time,their own men have been in control. Watch, "The Communist and Free Masonic Infiltration of the Catholic Church". It is here on you tube. It explains a lot.

Thank you for this video. Very beautiful. I would have liked to have heard Palestrina for the common parts but many choirs were not technically able to do it. My family used to go to St. Peter's in the loop in Chicago in the fifties and they were packed to the rafters for the High Mass on Sunday. What memories. But thank God we have the SSPX today where one can receive the valid Catholic sacraments, attend the same Holy Sacrifice and get real Catholic sermons. The Lord knows how long we will have this treasure.
There's something so incredibly reverent in this. I feel the importance and righteousness of God and the Holy Spirit through this video, even though it was filmed so long ago. I wish the mass would return to a more traditional order. It sounds like most people would prefer that!

The seriousness of the celebrant and the meticulous order of the rubrics in which he, the Deacon, subdeacon and acolytes direct to this sacredly reverrent service is sublime. And that phenomenal schola. I understand that many of choristers were young seminarians! Directed under a very serious priest. Even the organist was a priest. How sad what the office of the priesthood has devolved into. Even at the Indult service, they utilize unisex choirs!

True MASS ! Super! I was born in 88, after the reform, after the second Vatican Council, but I feel a big difference between this mass and the one that is taking place now. I try to go to a Traditional mass in Moscow, but they are less frequent than new ones

The solemnity and formality of this incomparable Mass can not be reconciled to the substitute we are forced to accept today. They are as night and day. Here is the true Holy Mass and it is our priceless treasure.

I was raised Catholic so I consider it part of my heritage and my mother's side of the family. This brings bacdk so many memories for growing up in the 1950s and 60s. I'm now protestant and pray for my Catholic brothers and sisters and my friends who are Catholic.

I love this kind of mass. Now its not like the old days.
As someone attending an Eastern Orthodox Church something attracts me still to the West I walk into my antiochian Orthodox church and it feels like I'm in Russia not home church should feel like home. The Orthodox are extremely anti-west in general all in all not everybody but most. I see both sides of church history and I pray for unity in the church because the West extremely badly needs the east but the East also extremely badly needs the West. Me growing up as a Protestant is now struggling extremely hard in my journey toward the truth of Christ and I'm torn between east and west if anybody could please help me out and please pray for me.

I love old traditional latin mass rather than todays english masses, and people today are so show off in churches they show off what new they have or what fancy thing they have, they forget that the church is a sacred place not a fashion runway

My son is an altar server, and as I watch the celebration, I realize some items are once again being 'salted' back into the Mass.

Started out in Catholicism until Jr. High years, then Evangelical Christianity through college, atheism, Baha'i and Eastern philosophy until recently, and now, in my late 50s, rediscovering the sublime meaning and mystical joy contained in Catholic ritual.
