      I would suggest that *this is not the way the saints prayed for 1,500 years,* and that those who persevered in sanctity in the era of the ossified 400+ post-Trent years were saints indeed *not because of, but in spite of the Tridentine liturgy.*

      @Tivadar Kiss they prayed in Aramaic, they prayed in Hebrew, they prayed in Greek, they prayed in Arabic, and for at least 500 years prior to Trent, they prayed in Slavonic.
      The majority of people were not taught Latin and they were left out -- by design. Rome went so far as to excommunicate, for example, the mystic Meister Eckhart *10 years after his death and burial* based on testimony that he sometimes preached in German so that his flock could understand.
      This was and is not the principle of universality, of catholicity, but the principle of oppressive totalitarianism.

    I am a 17 year old catholic desperately hoping for the Traditional Latin Mass to become the norm. I was raised with the Novus Ordo Mass, and I want to attend the TLM so badly. I was always raised Catholic but I was lax and it took me being extremely humbled to realize how much I need God (which is totally). God bless you all there is hope for the Church if we make our voices heard. If we stay silent and do not pray for this Mass, then we cannot expect it to rebound! Hail Mary...

      Jesus did not talk about rituals. He taught how to act and how to pray if you wanted to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, which he expected would soon arrive. His Mass was conducted in his language, Aramaic -- not the language of Caesar. His prayer was simple and direct, not chanted and enhanced with incense and lavish robes.
      Your "desperate hope" has nothing to do with the teaching of Jesus, and everything to do with your ego and your desire for spectacle and ritual.
      But as a first step in preparing yourself for the great day when you will watch a Latin mass, I suggest you study Latin so you can understand -- without a crib sheet -- what is being said. If you can't even do that, I wonder how "desperate" you really are.

      THE ONE Well she is the mother of God... There’s a reason why St. Elisabeth when meeting Mary said that she was “the mother of my Lord”.

    • @jaggedplanet
      @jaggedplanet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      THE ONE To understand why your charge does not work, one must first understand the use of the word “father” in reference to our earthly fathers. No one would deny a little girl the opportunity to tell someone that she loves her father. Common sense tells us that Jesus wasn’t forbidding this type of use of the word “father.”
      In fact, to forbid it would rob the address “Father” of its meaning when applied to God, for there would no longer be any earthly counterpart for the analogy of divine Fatherhood. The concept of God’s role as Father would be meaningless if we obliterated the concept of earthly fatherhood.
      But in the Bible the concept of fatherhood is not restricted to just our earthly fathers and God. It is used to refer to people other than biological or legal fathers, and is used as a sign of respect to those with whom we have a special relationship.
      For example, Joseph tells his brothers of a special fatherly relationship God had given him with the king of Egypt: “So it was not you who sent me here, but God; and he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt” (Gen. 45:8).
      Job indicates he played a fatherly role with the less fortunate: “I was a father to the poor, and I searched out the cause of him whom I did not know” (Job 29:16). And God himself declares that he will give a fatherly role to Eliakim, the steward of the house of David: “In that day I will call my servant Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah . . . and I will clothe him with [a] robe, and will bind [a] girdle on him, and will commit . . . authority to his hand; and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah” (Isa. 22:20-21).
      This type of fatherhood applies not only to those who are wise counselors (like Joseph) or benefactors (like Job) or both (like Eliakim); it also applies to those who have a fatherly spiritual relationship with one. For example, Elisha cries, “My father, my father!” to Elijah as the latter is carried up to heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kgs. 2:12). Later, Elisha himself is called a father by the king of Israel (2 Kgs. 6:21).

    • @jaggedplanet
      @jaggedplanet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      THE ONE Some Protestants argue that this usage changed with the New Testament-that while it may have been permissible to call certain men “father” in the Old Testament, since the time of Christ, it’s no longer allowed. This argument fails for several reasons. First, as we’ve seen, the imperative “call no man father” does not apply to one’s biological father. It also doesn’t exclude calling one’s ancestors “father,” as is shown in Acts 7:2, where Stephen refers to “our father Abraham,” or in Romans 9:10, where Paul speaks of “our father Isaac.”
      Second, there are numerous examples in the New Testament of the term “father” being used as a form of address and reference, even for men who are not biologically related to the speaker. There are, in fact, so many uses of “father” in the New Testament, that the objection to Catholics calling priests “father” must be wrong, as we shall see. Third, a careful examination of the context of Matthew 23 shows that Jesus didn’t intend for his words here to be understood literally. The whole passage reads, “But you are not to be called ‘rabbi,’ for you have one teacher, and you are all brethren. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called ‘masters,’ for you have one master, the Christ” (Matt. 23:8-10). The first problem is that although Jesus seems to prohibit the use of the term “teacher,” in Matthew 28:19-20, Christ himself appointed certain men to be teachers in his Church: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations . . . teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Paul speaks of his commission as a teacher: “For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle . . . a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth” (1 Tim. 2:7); “For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher” (2 Tim. 1:11). He also reminds us that the Church has an office of teacher: “God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers” (1 Cor. 12:28); and “his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers” (Eph. 4:11). There is no doubt that Paul was not violating Christ’s teaching in Matthew 23 by referring so often to others as “teachers.” Fundamentalists themselves slip up on this point by calling all sorts of people “doctor”; for example, professors and scientists who have Ph.D. degrees (i.e., doctorates). What they fail to realize is that “doctor” is simply the Latin word for “teacher.” Even “Mister” and “Mistress” (“Mrs.”) are forms of the word “master,” also mentioned by Jesus. So if his words in Matthew 23 were meant to be taken literally, Fundamentalists would be just as guilty for using the word “teacher” and “doctor” and “mister” as Catholics for saying “father.” But clearly, that would be a misunderstanding of Christ’s words.

    • @jaggedplanet
      @jaggedplanet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      THE ONE So you must ask, what did Jesus mean? Jesus criticized Jewish leaders who love “the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the market places, and being called ‘rabbi’ by men” (Matt. 23:6-7). He was using hyperbole (exaggeration) to show the scribes and Pharisees how sinful and proud they were for not looking humbly to God as the source of all authority and fatherhood and teaching, and instead setting themselves up as the ultimate authorities, father figures, and teachers.
      Christ used hyperbole often, for example when he declared, “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell” (Matt. 5:29, cf. 18:9; Mark 9:47). Christ certainly did not intend this to be applied literally, for otherwise all Christians would be blind amputees! (cf. 1 John 1:8; 1 Tim. 1:15). Jesus is not forbidding us to call men “fathers” who actually are such either literally or spiritually. He is warning people against inaccurately attributing fatherhood or a particular kind or degree of fatherhood to those who do not have it.

      @@pastorbri - there are no "lesser" gifts from God. If God gives you something, the sole purpose is to get you closer to Him. Because of that, no gift is lesser. Technically, Christ was not given to us (in the sense that we own and have dominion over). My belief is that in mass we surrender to God, with the Holy Spirit actively working in us. I've heard it expressed that mass is an eternal celebration of Christ (not that it goes on eternally but rather timeless in its nature). In short, the Mass is Father, Son and Spirit with us. More learned Catholics are welcome to correct any misrepresentation I may have expressed in Catholic teaching.

    We now know that Mass is for us to repair, offer, receive Jesus,adore, and give thanksgiving in a manner inspired by the Holy Spirit through the work of holy saints and doctors of the Church. Why would anyone dare tamper with something so sublime!!

      @@stephaniemac4637 You're allowed to do what you want, you'll go and see what it's like. I personally wish more women did veil (but when not many do I'm embarassed and don't want to stick out, so I don't do it at the NO mass I attend). I just ordered a veil (meantime I just used scarfs when attending Latin mass when in Poland), I find it very feminine, traditional and a sign of reverence and respect. I also wish people made more effort to dress nicely when going to mass (something my local NO has gone insanely liberal on), so men in suit/tie or nicely dress and women modestly in dresses/skirts with veils.
      When I go to my local one now children are in tracksuits, some people look like they rolled out of bed (fyi I welcome the poor and homeless, where others have shunned I've sat next to, however these people I'm mentioning are not from poverty yet not bothered, showing up with shopping bags too. So it's fine if you're travelling somewhere and make time for mass (hence rucksack/luggage) but shopping bags with clothes and makeup? really?). I'm disparing.
      I want to take communion kneeling but the priest reprimanded it (saying such people think they're holier than thou (I'm paraphrasing)) ... it takes courage.
      I would love for it to be at least taking communion kneeling and it not being completely sticking out like a sore thumb to be nicely dressed for a special occassion (i.e. going to the house of God) and being veild. Sigh. So excited to get my veil! but it'll be a few weeks, so just anticipating :)

    I just wanted to say:
    If you're a Traditional Catholic reading this: you're valid.
    If you're a Novus Ordo Catholic: You're valid and just as Catholic.
    Just because you can't attend TLM doesn't mean you're less. Your faith and your desire to love God is what matters ❤
    Sure, Novus Ordo isn't exactly as reverent and respectful, but it is still a valid Mass.
    I was raised and went to Novus Ordo only, because this is what is most prevalent nowadays. I understand the struggles that come from The Novus Ordo mindset and how they try to water down the faith. I lost my faith as a young teenager and I came back to Christ's Church. However, I almost lost my faith completely again due to the things that were happening in my parish and the lack of reverence and seriousness.
    This is when God blessed me with a friend who was a Traditional Catholic that guided me back to the Tradition of the church. I've been attending the Old Holy Mass for about 3 months now and I can say that I've never felt more convicted about my faith than now. Sure, I still struggle. I'm still in the process of transitioning from NO to Traditional. But it's all worth it. I am so grateful to the LORD for guiding me and being my strength through it all. This Mass is the most beautiful and reverent and it just makes you feel complete and fulfilled. I'm also grateful that there's a few churches (3 that I know of) that offer the TLM not too far away from my home.
    All glory to GOD ✝️❤

      As a Daughter of the Holy Apostolic See of Blessed Saint Peter, I thank you Orthodox Brother! Please, help us to elevate our prayers for this beautiful tradition to come back! It may not be enough for some, but for me, this elevates my heart and mind towards the Almighty, and I pray for this tradition to return.
      For some who find the novus ordo to suffice, I feel so happy that it feeds their souls with the word of the Lord!
      For me, who am stubborn and quite frankly willful, only the solemnity of the Traditional Latin Mass feeds my senses, soul, and elevates my mind to the wonderful mysteries of the Lord.
      I have no shame in admitting that I am a sinner who needs the structure, discipline and solemnity of the TLM to move me closer to God. I need this, for the good of my soul.
      Therefore:
      I confess to almighty God
      And to you my brothers and sisters,
      That I have greatly sinned,
      In my thoughts, in my words,
      In what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
      Through *my* fault, through *my* fault, through *my most grievous fault*
      Therefore I ask blessed Mary, ever Virgin,

      AntiFem Glasscock 1. The church converted Europe and the Americas and many other countries and continents with this mass and did the natives to those lands know how to speak Latin? I don’t think so. Also the benefit of it being a dead language is that the meaning of the words can now never be changed and since it now has no affiliation to any country on Earth, it is a universal language that everyone can use therefore making the Church universal. 2. When you’re worshipping your Creator it’s not supposed to be about you and whether you are able to feel a part of it. It’s about God. That’s why the priest faces away from the people. It’s because the focal point of the mass is God(tabernacle) and not the congregation. Your gripe with the Latin mass can all be summed up to that it doesn’t involve you. And that’s the problem, it’s not supposed to be about you.

      @alessandromanahan8750 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes, both have pros and cons
      The main thing to consider is that on both, Christ Jesus comes down to us at the Consecration so that we can receive Him in Holy Communion
      We are also able to adore Him when He is solemnly exposed and receive His Blessing at Benediction. The best thing to do is to attend the Holy Mass with the greatest devotion. The Priests offering the Mass must make sure that abuses are not committed by instructions and their example.

This particular video I come back to over and over again. There’s really no words to describe how beautiful and transcendent this is…even those words don’t scratch the surface. I have faith in the younger generation - they will bring the Extraordinary Form back to the forefront of the Church. Amen.

    • @Moomoo-cp6ey

      I agree, today's novus ordo is a banal attempt at a Protestant worship service with a Eucharist jammed in the middle, add the four hymn folk music sandwich and a Gloria that makes you cringe singing it and you have a disaster. The problem is it was invented by a committee and therefore, like anything invented by a committee it is a reflection of the times and can never live up to the truly supernatural. The Latin mass is timeless, not invented by anyone, but is an organic development. It's like trying to compare a beautiful serene lake in nature to a public swimming pool.

    • @Moomoo-cp6ey
      @Moomoo-cp6ey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      +Patrick Binter The Eucharist, being the high point of the mass that it is deserves reverence and serene beauty. The liturgy and the Eucharist are intrinsically linked.

    • @patrickbinter3715
      @patrickbinter3715 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +Patrick Stevens not really.. some of the most beautiful masses were celebrated in places where elegance couldn't be implemented. Think of missionaries celebrating in secret, or a chaplin saying mass on the eve of a battle. The posh of a sophisticated liturgy doesn't equate devotion. Quite the contrary in many cases I'd say

    • @Moomoo-cp6ey
      @Moomoo-cp6ey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Patrick Binter No, what you call posh doesn't equate devotion, nor does it take away from the validity of the mass. However, my opinion is that the Tridentine mass is more beautiful and reverent and deserving of what is actually taking place at the altar. Those examples you site are extreme and not at all the norm, we're not living under those circumstances and I fail to see how they are beautiful in comparison to a solemn high mass. The mass should be celebrated with as much elegance and beauty as is possible to the community.

  • @blooddaemon24

There should be more fellowship in the Catholic Church. Not just doing the rituals and leaving without really knowing your fellow worshipers. There is still too much division and angry old men running things.

    Why you Catholics would throw this beautiful tradition out of the window in favor of the new mass is beyond me. This is so incredibly beautiful and solemn! Too bad in Brazil we seldom see this kind of ritual performed because of our incredibly impoverished aesthetical sensibilities and our strong charismatic affiliations. Nothing against those guys, but I would love to attend to something like this instead of what seem like a modern protestant service rip-off... It might've even made me a catholic if this kind of beauty was still common.

      Christopher Martin True enough, but the years that people have taken all that away and replaced it with modernist freaky looking things and cheesy music has been pretty bad on the Church, who would take the Catholic Church seriously when they walk in and hear "Kumbaya"?, when people see the Latin Mass, they are struck by its feel, and all the incense, bells and "pretty" vestments has a lot do do with putting us in a state of mind, as well the environment of our surroundings, we aren't puritans, we are Catholics, don't be afraid of beauty.

    I get to go to this mass every week. We have it in a plain old converted Baptist Church, now blessed and Catholic but still nothing compared to most any Catholic church built before 1950. I may not know the latin language but I am amazed at the power of this mass. While attending this mass, God's Grace flows into me as nothing I have experienced before. I drive an hour each way for this blessing. I don't understand why it was replaced by a mass that focuses on the Priest rather than on God.

    Pater Noster, Qui es in caelis, sanctificetur Nomen Tuum, adveniat regnum Tuum, fiat voluntas Tua, sicut in caelo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis débita nostra sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libéranos a malo. Amen.

    My father says he remembers when my grandmother used to go the Latin Mass using a veil, now the church looks like a parking garage. I'm not even christian anymore, but if someone wants to call upon the name of God, beauty is fundamental.

      Twenty-six years ago my wife and I went to a latin Mass: we were both so stunned that we never looked back. It was a High Mass (chanted like this one, but not as complex), but we even loved the Low Masses (which are only spoken). Best wishes to finding the one nearest you, and may you receive the same blessings we did.

    I would not like to enter into a theological debate as to which one is a better mass, as I am not a theologian. (I shall leave that to them alone.) However it is so slef-evident by just watching this video that our old mass used to be ever so reverent to the holy Eucharist and to the true presence of God in his temple. It was in deed a truly spiritual and supernatural mass; full of genuflections (i.e. bowing, blessings, positions of reverence, etc.) and wholly focused into the true meaning of the mass; “The holy sacrifice”.
    I did not matter how many people attended, because the Priest was not looking at the people he was constantly looking at God.
    It did not matter whether people knew how to follow the mass as all they needed to do was to kneel, keep quiet and contemplate the celebrants say the mass.
    This is the distraction of today in our masses that people want to make of it a re-using, a social gathering, and that many priest think that making people participate in the mass (i.e. saying the mass, providing readings and communion.) would make people increase their spiritual participation, but it does exactly the opposite (from spiritual point of view), because people are forgetting how to contemplate, and priest are forgetting how to connect and stay closer to God, by stepping closer to the people and the wold.
    Thank you so much to Mark for sharing this video
    Thank you to EWT for broadcasting this so beautiful mass
    Thank you to Pope Benedict the XVI for his “Mutuo Propio”

      I am Ethiopian catholic and I grow up with a beautiful Geez chanting which is reserved for church and respect for the Holy Eucharist. And I missed that chant since I am now in US. Latin mass resembles it so I want to go to latin mass but it is hard to find.
      Even in Ethiopia, most people don't understand Geez but through time, going every Sunday, they will understand it.
      Even we have a mass booklet one page Geez, one page Amharic, the national language. But the Latin and Geez have a beautiful chanting that lifts up your spirit and makes you realize that the mass is really heavenly.
      In the English mass which I attend, they ommit some important parts of the mass like part which we say, through my fault, ........... and tap our chest and no insense( which is only for GOD).
      May God help us.
      There are 3 masses in the mornng, so why not make one of it be Latin? I know it is not easy but we need to work on it together, if we try, God will help us.

      Jesus did not tell his disciples to sit there and contemplate, or enjoy the nice music, or wonder at the artistry of some sculptor. He demonstrated the right way to worship God in a group, and commanded his followers to "do this in remembrance of me".
      He didn't say "make sure you have some good music" or "take care to decorate the place of worship lavishly" or anything like that. He didn't say NOT to do that, but he demonstrated the essentials, and didn't bother with decorations or displays or performances. He was dealing with working class guys, not wealthy people with good taste in art.
      The Mass is not an artistic performance to be savored because it calms your mind and makes you feel holy. it is an act of worship in which Christians gather to share bread and wine in remembrance of Jesus, and to pray together as brothers and sisters, led by the priest, who is part of the apostolic succession that was initiated by Christ, and has continued ever since through the laying on of hands by the bishop at ordination.
      The problem with the Latin Mass is that it is incomprehensible to most people living today. Jesus spoke the language of his disciples, Aramaic, because he wanted them to understand what he was teaching, not sit there enjoying the sound of his voice as he spoke a foreign language.
      The Church has learned over the years that it is useful to appeal to the senses through beautiful images and music and incense and the architecture of the church. They reason that it's good to attract people to come to Mass, even if they are just going to relax and listen to the music. That's practical wisdom, and no doubt Jesus might have tried to jazz things up if he had had any money. But he didn't have any money, and he didn't want any. He just wanted his daily bread, which was probably donated to him and his followers by people who valued his teaching and his miracles.
      As an atheist, I study religion as a human creation, a creative expression of humanity. I know it has some valuable things to teach us, as do all human activities. But I don't believe in divinity or supernatural things.

    • @leezaslofsky1389
      @leezaslofsky1389 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nomore4x4s You are entitled to your beliefs, but you can't prove they are true. Religion is a human invention, there is nothing supernatural about it.

    • @leezaslofsky1389
      @leezaslofsky1389 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nomore4x4s Well, since I am an atheist, it's pretty natural for me to have atheistic views on religion.
      You fail to take note of iconoclasm, which was dominant in the Eastern Church for many years, and involved the destruction of objects like icons that appealed to the senses. You fail to note the plainness of many Protestant churches, which regard decoration as sinful and a distraction from true worship.
      It is very high minded of you to say that Pope Julius, who hired Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel, was only thinking of giving glory to God. He was a Pope who led his troops into battle, and who wanted only the best to decorate his palaces.
      The same craving for fine art, beauty, and sensual arousal has filled temples, mosques, churches all over the world with masterpieces. It's easy to say that all this is just meant to glorify god. But the reality is that it is meant to glorify the people who commissioned it and paid for it, and the artists who created it.
      The subject of a masterpiece may be the artist's idea of what God, or the Virgin, or Moses might have looked like. But the beauty and power of that masterpiece does not depend on its relation to myths and bible stories, but on the excellence of its execution, the effect it has on the senses and the mind.
      The same artists who created portraits or statues of Jesus or a saint also created portraits of pagan gods and spirits, which are equally beautiful, just as well executed, and just as powerful as the "holy" art they made.

      @@leezaslofsky1389 Beauty is indeed in the eyes of the beholders nut one cannot deny that the traditional Tridentine mass is aesthetically more beautiful, and majestic and I see no reason why an interaction with God has to follow the trend for minimalism which is commonly found in today's world. Muslims throughout the world prays in arabic and they're number keeps increasing and we all know that not every muslim's native language is Arabic (granted, arabic is not a dead language like Latin). But I do not believe that language barrier is an issue when Latin is the language used as the prayer as this can be taught (and if it is indeed difficult, perhaps the prayer book should provide a translation in their native language).

    Since becoming Orthodox, one thing I have learned is to make the distinction between Catholics and Catholicism ~ or any denomination with the people in it. Christ is present in the Divine Liturgy, but I cannot say Christ is not present in the Latin mass or any other. God is a mystery and salvation is from Him. In Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit one God amen.
