I'm planning on taking a few AMTRAK multi-day trips in the not-too-distant future. I don't currently have a small, portable, GPS unit but I intend to get one before embarking on my rail adventures.
I enjoy watching the landscape change from urban to rural and back again. Views which can only be seen by rail travel, not from the air, or the superhighway. America's back yards are unique.
This was great!! I live just north of Tampa and have always wanted to take the Tampa to Miami route. Narration is great and appreciate you going to the map to show where everything is located. We didn't actually see the Tampa station which was restored a few years back and added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Thank you. I'm loving your train video's. This episode was especially good for showing the overdue upgrades I've recently read about. I'm planning several trips late 2022 (Zephyr first up). Best regards from Australia.
David McInnes, keep in mind that on the western trains, including the Zephyr, you will be in a SuperLiner train car, not the ViewLiner type shown in this video.
I enjoy your train odyssey video's. I can tell you have trouble with pronouncing the names of southern towns. That's to be expected if your not from the south. i have difficult time with northern towns with native American names. I'm disabled to a point I can not travel, I do however travel through these video's. Thank you.
The Silver Star does stop in Philadelphia. I've taken it from Philly to Ashland, VA and from Philly to Fayetteville, NC. I used to watch it drive by my old apartment complex as well. 😀
Got your stuff?... out you go. you made it. oh, i thought you were getting off but you are continueing on in your original berth. I was on a west glacier amtrak train in a two person roomette with my daughter... she loved the trip.
You should’ve gotten off the train in Tampa. They’ve built a new platform that’s level with the train. Very nice. I go on day trips from Tampa to Sebring round trip. About an 1 1/2 hour trip on way. Enjoyed your video. At the beginning of May I took the California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco. An amazing trip!!!
Loved your comment on the CSX track in South Carolina, no surprise to hear about that! I've followed that line and it's still all jointed rail between Camden and Hamlet NC. CSX hardly runs any freight on that portion anymore, if it were not for Amtrak, CSX would probably be taking the line up. When they did have freight on it, hearing those trains hit the joints, it was almost scary watching those cars shake.
This is cool your in my home state, and I might want to add that at 47:11 mark that's Amtrak Auto Train that runs from Sanford, FL to Lorton, VA. We also have a commuter train, Sunrail which runs in the greater Orlando area. Nice to see you traveled in my home state! Yes the Tampa station is reachable by both Silver Star and Meteor, and the Lakeland station is visited 2 times, westbound then eastbound for the Silver Star. Silver Star is the only train that makes stops in Tampa, so it stops 2 times in Lakeland, first westbound heading to Tampa, then eastbound before it goes southern to Miami. Silver Meteor does not go to Tampa, its more a direct route to Miami . There's 3 lines if i am not mistaken: Silver Meteor, Silver Star and the Palmetto as they both share some sort of similar routes.
your comment about how bad the ride was while you were trying to sleep made me think about my experience sleeping on the Crescent north or south of greensboro nc , I guess the freight trains beat the heck out of the tracks , back in july just south of chester pa in coach the train got up to 115 we were in a slight curve and it was vibrating so bad I thought it was going to derail I think they should really pay close attention to track maintenance
Viewliners one and three of which you were in are part of the new CAFUSA 130 car ordered back in 2014. 55 Baggage 25 Diners 25 Sleepers and 25 dorm/baggage. You weren't in a remained car though the original viewliners are scheduled for overhaul starting soon as is the Superliner II sleeper fleet. I don't know when. As for new one I'm in 100% agreement with you. They should ditched the sink in the roomettes and made the second seat full size.
FYI Tipping: I get my groceries delivered to my home as well. I tip 10% of my order. That usually means about a $5 tip, sometimes a little more, other times a bit less depending on the total cost of my grocery order.

Frank Carter, I want to accept your statement at face value, if it were not for so much information I have heard over the last couple years from lots of train/rail fans saying that AMTRAK was renovating older Viewliner cars, with removal of the toilets in Roomettes being one of the changes to be made. Maybe all of those sources were misinformed. I have not been able to find any authoritative sources on this, If you can point me (and others) to such a source, please do.
@@youtuuba Your have heard correctly on renovations. When all of the new Viewliner II cars have been delivered, Amtrak will begin renovating the older Viewliner I cars. Eastern Amtrak trains use Viewliner sleeper, baggage, baggage-dorm and dining cars. The coaches, lounge/cafe cars are Amfleet cars. Amtrak has recently refurbished the Amfleet I cars(vestibule doors on both ends) and will soon start on Amfleet II cars (vestibule doors on one end) in the near future. Amfleet I cars are used on the NEC and in other regional areas. Amfleet II cars are used on long distance trains. Again this just pertains to Eastern trains. I tell you this because in some of your other videos you seem to think all Eastern trains equipment were Viewliner cars. By contrast, Western trains cars are all Superliner cars except for the Viewliner baggage cars. As for sources, I have subscribed to Trains Magazine and Trainorders.com for many years and have been a NARP member for many years as well.

Re: your explanation of the configuration differences between Viewliners and Superliners (approx 01:35:00). I know you prefer the upper level of the Superliners (I think I would, too) but is there any compensation in the fact that rooms on the lower level would generally only have passenger "traffic" from those whose accommodations are on that lower level (that is, they belong there), quite unlike the "pass through," car-to-car pedestrian traffic past rooms on the upper level?
@@Beargizmo3 No, I meant "compensation." That word can mean money (as perhaps you've taken it) but it can also mean providing an equivalence. Or to put it another way, a "fair trade-off."

A couple of FYIs: The strange track you described at the Miami station is commonly called a 'runaround' track for obvious reasons. They use it for turning engines and cars and probably avoid using expensive union crew. Also, when we were there in 2012 we arrived around an hour late, but found 8-10 cabs outside ready to go. There was a nice old black gentleman who acted as the steward, asking people their destinations and sheparding them to the appropriate car. The reason for all this was, according to another cab driver, in Miami that business was extremely territorial. Most everyone is allowed to drop off at any location, but only certain groups are allowed to pick up at certain places, such as the airport, Amtrak, certain hotels, certain major venues, etc. They all get along very well as long as everybody plays nice. But God help anyone who fudges the rules, probably Tony Soprano style. May be different now. And yes, the cab was very modern and clean and the driver was dressed impeccably in a suit and tie and the fare to our hotel was almost exactly that quoted in the website. From what I saw, you wouldn't have wanted to walk to the hotel from there.
kip lupton, I guess you misunderstand the timeline here. I have completed this trip some time ago, there is no "going to" involved here. I am in the process of preparing my non-train related videos of this trip, and there will be some coverage of the Key West area.
Ah Florida, Danny Harmon's stomping grounds. I noticed no tent cities or graffiti in Orlando. Probably to hot. It does get to be eleventy billion degrees there. A guy would need a lot of cold snacks to survive.
Having watched most of your videos, I have noticed that you make a lot of little negative or critical comments about Amtrak throughout and it makes me wonder why you like to travel by Amtrak.
Brenda Wei, are you a child? I provide a travelogue on the whole experience. That includes being truthful about the experience, both good and bad. From your comment, it seems like you would prefer only happy, positive commentary. Mature adults want to know the whole story, not unrealistic filtered/censored content.
Larry Fries, I looked up the pronunciation online (while I was on the train) and found a couple variations involving the middle syllable, and then when I got on the train, I decided to use the variation that most closely matched the way the train crew and dispatcher were saying it. From that I conclude that I am pronouncing it one of the acceptable ways. But with few exceptions, there are always people who prefer a slightly different pronunciation. Even the area where I live, there are variations on the pronunciations of place names by long time residents. Because of your comment, I called the Kissimmee city hall this morning and asked them. The person there laughed and said there are quite a few common and acceptable pronunciations. She said the preferred one is more like KUH si mee, which differs from your own spelled out pronunciation in a couple of ways. She said most common pronunciations don't have the 'm' sound in the second syllable (so my pronunciation fits with that, except perhaps I used more of an an 'uh' vowel sound in the second syllable than the preferred 'ih' vowel sound.) So, it would have benefited you to have checked into it a bit more before flatly insisting that I got it wrong.

From what I saw, you wouldn't have wanted to walk to the hotel from there.
everything is done with a 'union crew' you want to end up in the swamp?
So did you see the barber of Seville?
A lot what you see growing under those nets are Ferns..
Yeah, it ALWAYS seems to take MUCH LONGER to get a rental car than it should!
I'm delighted another train Odyssey are you going to shoot video in Key West too?
kip lupton, I guess you misunderstand the timeline here. I have completed this trip some time ago, there is no "going to" involved here. I am in the process of preparing my non-train related videos of this trip, and there will be some coverage of the Key West area.
@@youtuuba thank you very much, sorry about the incorrect wording, i knew the trip was in May .looking forward to finishing the trip
by aqua train perhaps? driven by the sub-mariner of comic book fame?
Ah Florida, Danny Harmon's stomping grounds. I noticed no tent cities or graffiti in Orlando. Probably to hot. It does get to be eleventy billion degrees there. A guy would need a lot of cold snacks to survive.
+1 for the Vice Grip Garage reference. :)
them bums all get 'food stamps' they could buy 'cold snacks' maybe some cheez doodles too
that viewliner dinette car replaced the old heritage diner car
What I would have done was to walk naked through the cars asking everyone if they'd seen any clean towels...
you so kraay..!
I'm so jealous! 😭😭😭😭 and my feet is hurting me too 😭😭😭😭 Sorry about it.
Under the nets at Seville they grow ferns.
ferns you can smoke!
Mature adults want to know the whole story, not unrealistic filtered/censored content.
brenda likes to be lied to,.. ok, i wont come in your mouth darlin' ..
Turn off autofocus and set manual focus to infinity!
People are rude and/or totally clueless in the narrow train hallways.
I like train odyssey, except when you start complaining.
when slamtrak gets its shit together..
No
Kissimmee Florida he keeps pronouncing it wrong kiss simm ee not kiss a me 😂
Larry Fries, I looked up the pronunciation online (while I was on the train) and found a couple variations involving the middle syllable, and then when I got on the train, I decided to use the variation that most closely matched the way the train crew and dispatcher were saying it.
She said most common pronunciations don't have the 'm' sound in the second syllable (so my pronunciation fits with that, except perhaps I used more of an an 'uh' vowel sound in the second syllable than the preferred 'ih' vowel sound.)
So, it would have benefited you to have checked into it a bit more before flatly insisting that I got it wrong.
It's kiss simm ee I live here lol 😆 you have the best videos thx 😊
