Useful posting. I have two 1249's and both occasionally have the loose turnarm assembly bolt. As with your work, tightening solved. my automatic play issue even without changing my steuerpimpel. One more thing, the Dual "steuerpimpel" part is properly pronounced: "stoyerpimple" (it is a German machine of course). The word "steuer" means "to steer". The guy who steers a boat is a "steuermann".

I replaced the Steuerpimpel in my Dual CS 721 a few months back, along with some of the tacky silicone grease that is recommended for the surface it contacts to move the tonearm. It seems like a flaky way of doing things, but I bought the turntable in 1978 and it took 40 years to start having that problem. Now it is good as new. From what I've been told, they did this to make the automatic function less noisy and it's pretty effective.

The "Stupid Pimple" is actually a pretty decent way to doa clutch mechanism. If the tone arm is stuck or restricted, there is enough slip so nothing gets damaged, and there is just enough friction for it to work.
You have to remember the age of these turntables. They have lasted this long, and only just now having the thing replaced. Most that have failed are on the original part still. Not to mention, they are darn cheap and easy to replace :)

„Steuerpimpel“ 😂 „Steuer“ like in steering wheel and a tiny Pümpel 🪠 turns into pimpel.
    Very helpful video 👍

So aren't you the Bomb! I have an old 1245 I decided to try to fix (or drop kick outta the shop), and my stupidpickle isn't just worn out - it was completely gone - plus the tonearm thingy was completely dried greasebound. I have a Dual 1258 also I got running. However - I have two 'sort of working' Impro Perpeteum Ebner's' - a 3060 and something else - they are pretty awesome underneath - look like Rube Goldberg inventions. No real electronics - just levers and things. I am pretty sure I'll never get them working perfectly but it's kind of fun to mess with them. I want to build clear plexiglass bases for them - the beauty is all of the moving levers, rockers, springs etc. Thanks for your help!

Hocus Pocus and the stupid pimple is no more a problem!
These old automatic DUAL turntable were not considered as desirable audiophile stuff a few years ago. With a new vinyle fever raging on, and prices of Garrard, Thorens soaring madly, these Duals with full auto options are now also on the top list. In 1995, I remember this same model with a decent cover was for sale at the local flee market for only 10€, and a Thorens nearby for 15€!. Some probably regret that time, but with internet, anyone can now appreciate the real value of these built for last machines. These Duals are keepers!
When you compare to the low budget Japanese plastic crap some are now trying to sell for much more money it diserves, with missing or broken lids, torn arms, rusty and dusty cells with worn out diamonds, such a turntable is far most qualitative and desirable. However, these mid budget quality turntable are now minimum 150 / 200 € and climbing, as most of the new record players (with MP3 converters) in that budget are pure xxxt. The most recknown vintage models are disputed must have for audiophiles and vintage high end specialists, as these could become a good basis for a minimum tweak, but also basis for dement rebuilding with, say a 1000€ granite or rosewood plinth, a new 1500€ cell, silver wirings and much more...People can pay $$$ even for non working or broken models.

You are the best resource for fixing up these beautiful vintage German engineering marvels. Thank you for sharing. One question, where do u source the Steuerpimpel from ? I tried AliExpress but those are pretty bad rubber pieces.

    • @12voltvids

I make my own. A piece of screen spline seems to work the best. This is what they use to rescreen windows.

So I had to go look that word up. Steuerpimpel is the spelling for this little rubber dingus. The German word 'Steuer' means to control or steer from what I found. Nice fix Dave.

      @hugobloemers4425 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I love Dual record players, I have 3 of them 2x 1019 and 1 x 1009. The nice thing is that you can troubleshoot the mechanism without power as seen here on this video. Try that with a Japanese automatic that have two motors. One motor for the automatic mechanism which makes working on it much more difficult because now you have a cam with switches as well as mechanics. But those are beautiful mechanisms as well, only more difficult to work on.

  • @markmarkofkane8167

Interesting. Never had a Dual turntable. Can't understand why they would have moving parts dependant on friction by rubber. Even old VCR's started using gears instead of rubber for mechanisms. I suppose one reason would be to prevent breakage if the arm was immobilized and the operation was engaged.

  • @vintagepc64

Encountered this myself too. FWIW if you don't have replacements on hand, the inner (white) material from a piece of coax makes a good substitute.

@@12voltvids if I had to guess as long as it fits the stud it wouldn't matter unless the outside diameter of it would interfere with another part of the mechanism ... I think most times the white portion is like a styrofoam of some sort pretty easy to manipulate it
