We have our '74 Marantz turntable and a 2010 amplifier that has NEVER worked correctly together. thanks for the info on the preamp man I've been running with a modified victrola suitcase my buddy made for me forever ago. Finally decided to upgrade and had no idea what to even look for.
I don’t know if you read these but honestly you helped me a lot with this shit, I know what I need to do just because of your 10 minute video so thank you bro!
The Pyle/Beringher pre's are, as you noted, just fine for getting started. I would also throw the ART DJ PRE II preamp out there as a great starter preamp. It's a little bit more at $50 instead of $30, but you're getting IMO higher quality right out of the gate that rivals much more expensive units. You won't be as eager to "upgrade" later if you step up just a bit getting started.
I'm having issues with a speaker cutting out only when I'm using phono mode with my turntable on my reciever. The speakers work fine when I'm using the tuner mode. When I loosen the ground lug and remove it the sound comes back for awhile but when I reattach it play for awhile the same problem happens. Iv replaced the cables and still have the same problem. I dont know what to do to solve this. I'm using a Stanton T.52 through a pioneer sx 1900 reciever along with vintage model one dlks. Any information would be greatly appreciated .
My Yamaha receiver had issues with the phono input. I ended up having to get an external phono preamp and run it through another input on my receiver to get good audio. I’m not sure if that’s what’s happening in your case but may be worth a try?
Awesome tutorial. So you only ground Record Player to Preamp (stamp 5:15 )? I have Edifier MR4s and am connecting an old Sears Solid State Record player (with no Phono outputs) to a preamp. Buying Two RCAs cables, Male to Male w/ Ground, and one Male to Male (without ground). Am I going about this the right way?!
Hi there, I am pretty confused on why my setup is not working (I am a newbie). I have a Sherwood s-2770 receiver, Technics sl3300, and Celestion f2 passive speakers. The receiver has a built in preamp, and I plugged RCA cables into phono input and turned on phono setting on receiver but I can’t hear anything. I also made sure grounding wire was snug and that speaker wires are in correct terminals in the receiver and on speakers. Is there anything obvious that I am missing? I can hear very very quiet sound of the record playing when I lean in close to my turntable. Thanks !
Honestly it sounds like the built-in preamp is either not on or not working. I did a search on this model and couldn’t find anything that suggested it has a preamp built in.
Thanks for this mate. I've just bought a Pioneer DDJ 1000 and when running turntables through the built in pre-amp the records are lacking fullness and the sound quality just isn't there. Now I'm having to look at some pre-amps which is not ideal after spending £1100 on a peice of kit which you would expect to sound fantastic.
Firstly, thanks for your prompt reply. The Yamaha amp has a phono input so it was easy to plug the RCA cables from the Turntable into the Amp and connect the ground wire also. So, it should all work. As the phono light on the amp is not lighting up ( or indeed any other of the source lights), it may be a problem with the Amp itself. On the back of the Amp is a two pin power input. I see on your video you have something ( the Turntable power point plug???) plugged in about where the two pin is located on the back of my Amp. What do you have plugged in there? Cheers. Phillip
I did the set up exactly as you instructed: Hooked up Technics SL1300 (1975) with a Music Hall Mini phono pre-amp with a Harmon Kardon Receiver (2005). Turntable played fine and connections seem in order but still cannot hear any sound. Can you help?
Hi Appreciate the video. I bought a Numark 1700 TT and replaced the needle assembly. I am using a Pyle PDA7BU Amp/Receiver system. When I try to play an LP , I can hear the music very faintly, but nothing from my speakers. Do you think I need a preAmp as you suggest in this video? Thanks
I just want to see you helped me a lot. I had my old DJ set up that consisted of two techniques. I did not know what to do with the ground wire because I didn’t want to hook it up to my mixer. I just wanted to listen to records through my stereo. Thanks for clearing that up for me
I cannot get my turntable (with a built in preamp) AT-LP60X to work with my receiver (Yamaha R-S202). I have it on the line option and connected to a line input in the receiver. I’m not sure if the preamp that is built in isn’t compatible or if the internal preamp is damaged or what. Receiver to speaker connection works, because I used the receiver Bluetooth option and can play music from my phone to the receiver to the speakers. I feel like I’ve tried everything and am at my wits end. I would be curious if you had advice or had experience with this problem before. :)
I got an old garrard table from my neighbor, works with a soundbar, however could use some filtering and has no bass, so I assume a simple inline preamp will work wonders plus grounding it
I have an RT81 that I just bought with a bluetooth option amp with some Micca MB42x speaks. I have it switched to line since it has a built in pre-amp, however, sound doesn't play to the speakers. I have tested the amp to speakers because I'm able to play music via bluetooth but nothing from the TT. The cables are RCA both ways from the TT to the amp. Would it help to get an RCA to AUX cable or is there something I'm missing? Please help!
Hi I have a pioneer 329 receiver amplifier I wish to connect it to my turntable Gemini PT 1000 is this the right device I require, plus from back of amp where do I insert
If your Pioneer receiver doesn’t have a phono input then yes you will need a preamp. You can run it into one of your AUX inputs or the CD one, which is what I do.
I just purchased the Yamaha 683 receiver recently. My older model Numark turntable does not have the same sound quality as it did on my older receiver. I have to turn the volume up significantly to listen at the same rate as I would to something on Bluetooth that goes through the receiver. Would I benefit from buying a preamp for the phono when I already have a phono input and ground cord on the receiver?
Hihi. I have a Marantz integrated amplifier with phono line , Teac turntable with preamp and it also has the option to turn off the preamp. I wanted to get better sound and got a extra preamp. So i turned off the turntable preamp and connected from turntable to preamp and from preamp to cd line on amplifier. Then comes the problem. I only get sound from the left side. It is got sound, better than from both side using the built in turntable preamp. But of course i would like to get sound from both sides. Sound comes from both side if i use the cd line on amplifier and connect to turntable with the built in preamp from the turntable. So what is my problem. Is the extra preamp broken? it is new.
I have a Kenwood KR 4010 matched to a Technics turntable. The phone input on the receiver is intermittent. Can a hook up the preamp to the tape input on the receiver? (It doesn’t have a cd or aux input only tape)
Ok my turntable has rca outputs in the back and a phono jack in the front. The rca on the right is extremely weak barely puts any sound out the left one is better. Would this help with that or is the turntable messed up. And if I connect through rca outputs then what is the phono jack in the front of the turntable for
I have this old turntable and I just have no idea how to make it work … I also can’t find any info on it , except like in Italian (so I guess it was made in Italy?) it’s Europhon RCK 5000 P Can anyone help out ? Also it has no input , just 2 output cables (like the one you plugged in the receiver) and a power plug. Any help would be appreciated.
If the turntable has a preamp, is it best to use the "line" input of the receiver? Or if the turntable has the option to turn off the preamp and has a Line selection, plug the turntable to "phono" if the receiver has the inputs. Is that the logic behind this? I have a 30 year old 5.1 pioneer vsx5600 receiver that has an "Phono" input (which I am assuming it already has an amp) and I am thinking of buying an audio technica LP120xusb that says it has a switchable "phono preamp" and "line level" selection options. So, in theory if i select the "line level" on the turntable and plug the rca into the "phono" input of the receiver, I should be okay. Am I correct?
Your turntable has line/phono switch in the back. If your receiver has a phono input meaning it has a built in phono pre amp you should switch your turntable to the phono switch. This bypasses the turntables built in preamp. The line switch on the turntable utilizes the turntables built in preamp and you should never run a preamp on top of a preamp.
@@StillSpinning3 wrong , the line level switch on the back of the turntable utilizes the built in preamp. You shouldn't go preamp into preamp. Switch the turntable to phono and bypass the internal preamp then plug the RCA into the phono input of the amp
I currently have a Pyle preamp.I am only getting sound on my A speakers. How can I get sound to my B speakers? My receiver (also Pyle) only has one audio input / output. Is that my problem? Would I need two preamps, one for each pair of speakers?
I have a sony ps-LX250h it was given to me by my neighbor and the phono cable had its wires open and it worked but occasionally I’d have to move it around at certain angles in order to have sound. I cut the wired off and got fresh wire and used a wire connector to connect them but no sound is coming out at all.
I have a problem with my preamp sorry for my bad english. Every time when i play new vinyl or turn sides left channel stop working and i should up plug the cables from the preamp and plug in to fix the channels
I’m using a phono stage plugged into line inputs on a pre amp that does not have a phono stage. What is that pre amp doing at that point. Why can’t I just use my phono box connected to my amp
I have a Pioneer receiver amp vsx 305 from about 1996. The old record player from the 1970s used the phono plug and worked fine for sound quality. Internal problem with that caused to purchase a pioneer PL 990. When i hooked it to the phono it sounded terrible. I moved it over to the VCR plug inputs and worked nice. Any ideas why? I truly dont know what the preamp actually does
Hey I have a question. How can I control my active speakers volume with my receiver? Seems like I can’t adjust the volume on my receiver. I only can adjust the volume on the speaker itself
I have a Hitachi P17 turntable ( about 1977). I have a Yamaha AX 596 Amplifier ( about 2001). So very, very similar to your Video. I added some speakers from an all in one system. I know for fact everything is set up properly ( it is too complicated to explain why) BUT no sound. The lights on the source input don't light up. AM I SUPPOSED TO PLUG THE TURNTABLE INTO THE AC CABLE PORT AT THE BACK OF MY AMPLIFIER??? If not, then I have a problem with my AMP that needs fixing. I don't have the necessary cable to do that at the moment. That is why I am asking. I am in Australia. Cheers
A question that many would have but no concrete answer is to be found. What is the compatibility (if any) between a pre-amplified turntable (phono/line switch) with RCA output and a setup of two active studio monitors that have XLR input? What is the technical linkage between this two?
I have a 70s receiver and it has one set of output jacks and the other says tape out. The only other connections are for speakers. How would I connect an amp like this to the turntable and receiver?
@StillSpinning3 None. It's a Marantz twenty-three. It's just the Tuner from what I can see, and I noticed it doesn't have speaker connections. I thought the connections were for speakers, but they're antenna connections. I'm thinking this Tuner connects directly to an amp or conteol with speaker connections via the output jacks?
I have an RT 81 fluance that has a built in pre-amp and also have a Technics receiver connected through the phono option. I've switched from line to phono on the RT81 connected it to the Technics receiver and connected speakers with RCA cables from a TAPE REC OUT option. I'm not getting really low sound. Do you think i need to connect passive speakers with copper wires like you in the video to get it to work?
I know this is 5 YO but still helpful. Couldn't figure out why there was distortion when using an external pre amp and fed directly to my AVR's phono input. This vid helped me sort it out. Directions from the mfr. doesn't explain the nuances. Thanks.
I’m thinking this my issue. I have an early 2000’s Onkyo receiver and just bought a Technics SL-D3 turntable and only getting half volume. No phono plug in on receiver I used dvr with old phono
Hi everyone, I have a DJM Nexus 2 mixer connected to a receiver, two speakers and two decks. We use to have two analog turntables connected and they produced sound without issue. Took pictures of the connections/setup and moved and used the photos to ensure I had everything connected perfectly and of course... no sound coming out of our two turntables. I was curious if maybe the pre-amp in my mixer could have blown out? Maybe I'm doing something wrong and don't realize. Any insight or guidance anyone could provide would be immensely appreciated. So far Pioneer and other tech lines I've called are scratching their heads.
What happens when you buy a pre amp and plug everything as you say and still no sound. I have an 80s turntable technique and a newer Sony stereo system and no sound any help would be greatly appreciated.
@@StillSpinning3 the cable you use in the video. Is it a 5 pin din to 2 phono rca lead with grounding connection also on it? I can not find one anywhere!
My turntable is connected to my phono pre amp and I finally got it working yesterday and now it just has a random sound and stops working no clue what happened. I tried to hook up my cdplayer to the pre amp today and then now both don’t work 4 months of frustration help if you can
Question: I just got a turntable (with phono or line in the back) and currently running it to a Bluetooth speaker but want to upgrade the sound. I’d like to add a HiFi preamp, if I got powered speakers do I still have to get a receiver? Would love to not get a receiver to save on space.
I have my current setup going from turntable - headphone amp - powered speakers and it works great. The preamp should provide the powered speakers what they need to do the job.
Similar to this. They don’t make the model I have anymore. www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=16153&gclid=CjwKCAiA25v_BRBNEiwAZb4-ZZy_m9TOg3twU1laixfYo2BNvfMnIQeyD3VWjwkZhhJVk-yLMX8thRoCQHcQAvD_BwE
I liked the video, was hoping you'd finish off with the speakers. I have a pioneer 115d table connected and grounded to a Pyle pp444 preamp, then the preamp to a zenith mc 7050 receiver. It has phono 1 and 2 but have the preamp currently in aux in. The speaker connected via speaker wire. I dont hear anything, I already tried the tape 1 and tape 2 inputs but still nothing. If I skip the receiver altogether and go from the preamp to the speakers via the stereo cable I can hear it, I just wanted to see what the difference is going through the receiver Any help would be appreciated
Still Spinning they are powered. One active (right) one passive (left) and they connect to each other via speaker wire. I just disconnected the wire to each other and fed them individually to the receiver while being powered separately
This is my first time watching your video on turntables & & how the pre amp set up should be. My question to you is. I am running a Audio Technica turntable. On my Yamaha Receiver, I do not have the phono preamp plugins. So I am using the CD plugin. Is that OK to do? My next question is this. When I am playing my LP's, When I go to turn up the volume, I get distortion coming out of the speakers. Could it be, That I have the turntable to close to the Receiver or to close to the speaker? Waiting for your feedback, Thanks Wayne...
Hey Wayne! Yes, you can use the CD input (I do the same thing) but you will need a phono preamp if your turntable doe not have one built it. The turntable proximity to your receiver should not cause distortion. Are you able to hear the music okay even with distortion?
I have a new problem I can hear vocals and instruments on left speakers and barely anything on right I can hear something on right speakers but the balance is on left for every record. Any advice
I plugged a turntable into phono, not realising their was a built-in pre-amp. The amp doesn't work anymore. What have I blown, and how do I fix it. P.S. it's an Aiwa xa-006 integrated. Thanks in advance.
I have a 79 zenith stereo console, the radio side sounds awesome, the turntable turns on fine, but it’s so distorted and quiet on phono, I feel like it’s the amp built in that’s bad? It’s quiet too, and these speakers are very loud. Any advise? Thank you!
Still Spinning I been messing with it for a few days now. Last night I headed to my parents and pulled a old console out of their hot attic that sat for 30+ years, took the turntable out and it wired directly with my Zenith and it sounded awesome! Such a relief and so glad it finally works. Take care.
The turntable must plug into a home audio receiver. The speakers will run from the receiver to produce the sound. What audio receiver are you using? Could you send me a picture?
I can play my record player, but it’s quiet. I have to crank the volume on my preamp quite high. Wonder if that’s what I get, or if this will help me turn it up without having to go so high.
@@StillSpinning3 it’s an onkyo pl-25f. When I crank the pre amp to its max, it’s kinda loud but when I’m on a cd player, or hooked up to my usb and phone, if I’m anywhere near where I’m at on the record player, it’ll blow the speakers. Wondering if it’s just normal for it to not be really loud.
Hi hope you can help me, I just got a realistic 2200 turntable as you probs know it has usual red n white rca conections plus a ground wire.I need to connect it to a technics midi set I have but no place for ground wire on technics, what can I do. Cheers Terry.
@@StillSpinning3 Good, I'd just happened to have a couple of (RCA to TRS 1/4 cable Y-Adaptors) So, I straight plugged the turntable into the guitar amp and listened to the record on it, "fun playing with the Drive" then I realized my amp had a (preamp-out) jack on the back and was able to use another cable Adapter and plugged that cable into my stereo Receiver.👍 (Disclaimer- "I was only looking for Loud volume and not Quality" So I did later purchase a cheap BBE preamp from, of all places "Guitar Center" because my local Best buy stopped selling them. "I'm just having fun playing around and thanks for the video."👍😎
hi! i have a new audio technica lp120 usb and want to connect it to a denon receiver so that we don’t have to buy new speakers just for the turn table alone. what would be the simplest way to connect it to the receiver along with the tv with output to speakers?
Hello! Not the Denon has a built in phono preamp than you should be able to use that for listening to your vinyl. If not, purchase a phono preamp and run your turntable through any standard audio input (Aux, CD, etc) and it should work fine. I don’t see the need to buy a whole new setup.
So if your receiver already has a phono input then it is assumed that there is a pre-amp already installed in the receiver. Is it adviseable to also run a pre-amp coupled with your receiver for even better performance? Or is it one or the other?
I would feel confident if your receiver has a phono input that it has a built in preamp. You will know right away if it doesn’t and you are not using an external preamp. No, pairing two preamps will make your audio extremely loud and distorted. Not recommended.
@@StillSpinning3 Then on the flip-side of the same token, what is it that when I see audiophiles with "tubes" and a pre-amp and a dedicated, what I can only assume is a kind of receiver or type of something, usually, a ridiculously high-end ""Macintosh" type of receiver, but it's not really a receiver you see. It's like a single unit w/ a single knob in the middle of it that I guess fuels the tubes and the pre-amp? Not sure. Can you break down or describe this kind of a set-up? As opposed to, Denon "some four number model number" Receiver. *Plug in. Then *plug in to your turn table. DONE. Rub my hands together as I proceed to sit down with a beer.
That is a tube headphone amp. I have one of those. It acts as a stand-alone amplifier specifically designed for listening to music with headphones with the added warmth of tubes.
Hi I manage to purchase a pre amp it's all good now but their is a extreme humming sound when stop playing the vinyls is it because I might of bought a low budget version? £12 on eBay?

I have a gerrard type a vinyl player with a brown, grey and green ground wire. I have no clue where to connect these to my " EICO ST 40" then my speakers into the eico heeeelllpppp !
Thanks a lot man. I bought a valve preamp and was plugging it in directly to mono. You saved me by showing where you should connect it. Now I benefit having a premap, sounds much better
There is absolutely no sound coming from my record player. It’s set up on phono on my receiver but no sound. Needle and cartridge all looks good what could be the problem?
is the phono option selected on your receiver? check all the connections, move wires around while record is playing. RCA cables are famous for coming loose inside. check speaker wire polarity too, they have postive and negative. make sure you have correct speakers selected too, if you have that option.
Hey still spinning great simplified information about setting up a pre amp, I've ordered A Nobsound little bear T9 pro metal phono turntable RIAA preamplifier, I've another Question I can get my hands on a Yamaha DSP-AX 863se Amplifier for €50 , my question is would this be ok to use with an Technics sl 1210 mk2 turntable, and the T9 preamplifier I've bought thanks in advance for any help much appreciated Kenneth
Hi there I wondering if you could help I got a Sharp opto mini early 70s model. The sound on the radio is perfect but the sound through the turntable is very low and doesn't come through the speaker. The cables are two din pins. I though the internal preamp might be broken can I buy a preamp and connect it or are those cables too old? I know nothing about record player but this has sentimental value and would really love to fix it. Any help would be really appreciated😊
Been listening to vinyl for a while and both my receiver as well as my turntable have built in pre-amps since both have phono inputs. Ive heard though, that my turntables pre-amp is not the best so I decide to purchase a pre-amp. So to bypass the pre-amps on both, I plug them in through line level inputs?
@@StillSpinning3 As far as a switch off or on , no. It only has a switch to play between line and phono inputs.......which I would assume will work as a off and on switch for the built in pre-amp. Or at least im hoping.......Its an ATLP5 that I have.

I got an old garrard table from my neighbor, works with a soundbar, however could use some filtering and has no bass, so I assume a simple inline preamp will work wonders plus grounding it
Yeah it’s probably in need of a preamp.

I have a stranton str8-80 and it just has a rca wire coming out no ground and no switches i can only get soft sound do I need a preamp
Try plugging your turntable into another input on your receiver and see if it changes the sound quality at all.
Is the extra preamp broken? it is new.
What if your PL990 does not have a ground cable only 2 RCAs. Cannot get sound and assume i need a pre amp but there is no ground cable
You should be good. Not all turntables have a ground wire.

Yeah that should work.
Ok my turntable has rca outputs in the back and a phono jack in the front. The rca on the right is extremely weak barely puts any sound out the left one is better. Would this help with that or is the turntable messed up. And if I connect through rca outputs then what is the phono jack in the front of the turntable for
I have this old turntable and I just have no idea how to make it work … I also can’t find any info on it , except like in Italian (so I guess it was made in Italy?) it’s Europhon RCK 5000 P

Brian Millett do pre-amp give sound to record players or can I add travelling speakers to the record player?
What’s that tube amp being used for. If you can make a video on it
If the turntable has a preamp, is it best to use the "line" input of the receiver?
Yes.
No.
If your unit has a built in phone preamp, whether it’s the turntable or the audio receiver, you don’t need a preamp.
I truly dont know what the preamp actually does
Thanks for the info. Have my preamp connected but still no sound. Using an Onkyo receiver. Any suggestions?
How do you get rid of the buzz sound. The grounding wire was attached when the buzzing started. I removed it and it decreased but not completely gone.
Hmm the ground wire usually helps with that. Check all of your connections to make sure everything is snug.
Still Spinning okay I will
I suspect the internal preamp on my turntable has recently died, is it possible to just add a external preamp without opening up the turntable?
Yes, if the internal preamp is completely out, you can use an external.
@@StillSpinning3 Thanks, I got a basic one (under $10) and it sounds better than it every has.
Hey I have a question. How can I control my active speakers volume with my receiver? Seems like I can’t adjust the volume on my receiver. I only can adjust the volume on the speaker itself
What kind of speakers do you have? If they are powered speakers, that might be the problem.
Cheers
It sounds like you are plugging it into the right place. Do you have an external phono preamp?
A question that many would have but no concrete answer is to be found.
What is the compatibility (if any) between a pre-amplified turntable (phono/line switch) with RCA output and a setup of two active studio monitors that have XLR input?

I have a 70s receiver and it has one set of output jacks and the other says tape out. The only other connections are for speakers. How would I connect an amp like this to the turntable and receiver?
No input jacks?
Could you send a picture to stillspinning3@gmail.com? It’s hard to follow your setup without seeing it.
Where is your ground cable running to from the preamp?
The back of my receiver has a ground connection.
Yes, I agree this should help.

If I skip the receiver altogether and go from the preamp to the speakers via the stereo cable I can hear it, I just wanted to see what the difference is going through the receiver

Are they powered speakers or traditional speakers that connect to the receiver with speaker wires only?
Any advice
What turntable do you have?
I plugged a turntable into phono, not realising their was a built-in pre-amp.
The amp doesn't work anymore.
What have I blown, and how do I fix it.
P.S. it's an Aiwa xa-006 integrated.

Have you tried using another input with the built in phono pre amp? Or is there only one?
I have a 79 zenith stereo console, the radio side sounds awesome, the turntable turns on fine, but it’s so distorted and quiet on phono, I feel like it’s the amp built in that’s bad? It’s quiet too, and these speakers are very loud. Any advise? Thank you!
Definitely sounds like an issue with the Zenith. I had a similar issue with an old Sony unit. Found out the phono input was bad.
Still Spinning I been messing with it for a few days now. Last night I headed to my parents and pulled a old console out of their hot attic that sat for 30+ years, took the turntable out and it wired directly with my Zenith and it sounded awesome! hi! i have a new audio technica lp120 usb and want to connect it to a denon receiver so that we don’t have to buy new speakers just for the turn table alone. what would be the simplest way to connect it to the receiver along with the tv with output to speakers?
Hello! Not the Denon has a built in phono preamp than you should be able to use that for listening to your vinyl. If not, purchase a phono preamp and run your turntable through any standard audio input (Aux, CD, etc) and it should work fine. I don’t see the need to buy a whole new setup.
do i need to buy a preamp if my record player has a built in preamp, but the receiver doesn’t have a phono input?
No it should work if the turntable has one built in.
