This is soooooo helpful!!!I'm so reassured I could cry. I got accepted for GEM pushing me into 3rd year of medicine from studying psychology and I've literally been shitting bricks because i feel like I dont know anything and I'm nervous about classes
Hi I’m doing psychology this year at uni as well and thinking of maybe going into medicine later on Is it possible to email you or message you and ask some more questions ! Thank you
Hi, I just came across your channel and it’s so useful so thank you! I’ve only recently been thinking about GEM so not very clued up on it. I’m currently studying an English degree so would be coming from an arts background, I didn’t take chemistry a level and I was just wondering if this something you had before applying?
you are so positive and kind! when you talked about taking the GAMSAT again and again until you got into med school, that was really powerful for me I’m definitely going to keep the same kind of mindset. Can I just suggest possibly filming horizontally or possibly investing in a camera? I would love to see your channel grow and more people to hear your advice 💓💓 this video was great 💖
Thank you for this video. Is it okay if I ask you a question? I know you've got quite a few questions already so I hope I'm not bothering you. My question is: What exactly do I do before applying for a GEM? I will definitely sit a GAMSAT as well as UCAT, however, besides that, is there much more to do? I will also definitely gain some work experience too in the meantime. Thank you again
Hi Mikolaj, you can prep and take the GAMSAT and ensure you get really good quality work exp - try and aim for working alongside doctors if possible so at interview you can accurately describe the day to day work. You can also read around the subject - see "Being mortal" by Atul Gawande or see my vid "Books for doctors"
You have motivated me more then you can imagine...thank you...am 33 and want to get into medicine. I have an arts degree and MA in media and didn’t do too well in science at school... what’s the best step to take now to get into med school? Dive straight into studying gamsat?
Yeah, start studying for the gamsat, take some practice tests and see where you are with it. Make sure you have work experience (made a vid on that if that's helpful) and think about interview prep!
Thank you so much for replying. Fantastic I will try to knuckle down on that... I am terrified of the interview... I hear people get grilled. Not sure where to get started with gamsat but will look around. Thanks a million
This video really inspired me, you have really given me an insight into GEM. How hard would you describe the GAMSAT? I’m about to start a languages degree and hoping to get into GEM at the end of my degree !
Hi Tammy, I found it super hard but that may be just me. Have a look at some of the materials and see what you think. It might be an idea to start prepping early - but at least knowing gives you that heads up.
Hello! I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I just wanted to say that I too am about to start a languages & history degree and would like to know how you got on?!
Hi, thanks for this video, it is really encouraging for me. I also did my first undergrad degree in Theology! As soon as you said that I was like okay, this video is for me. I'm currently taking the long way round and am due to start studying nursing in September and I'm not regretting my decision at all, but I have a feeling that as much as I love it I'm going to be really attracted to the science/medical side of the job and so I am considering, perhaps, that I might also apply for graduate medicine once I've graduated and worked a bit. I'll be in my 30's by then, but oh well. The thing I'm most worried about, besides my lack of knowledge (which tbh I am hoping to get via nursing), is the maths part of the entrance exams. The universities I am eyeing up for medicine use the UKCAT and I just looked at some example questions and was like....wow, I have no clue how to do this. I don't have maths A level and if I'm being honest I just about scraped a grade C in GCSE maths so I am worried that I will be let down by my maths skills. What advice would you have for this? Thank you
@@DrLauren-Jane Thank you! I know there's a quantitative reasoning section of the UCAT which is the bit I'm more on the fence about. The uni I'm looking at doesn't use the gamsat.
How old would you say is to old to study GEM? I will be 28 by the time I finish my phD, but always wanted to be a doctor when I was younger but didnt have the GCSE grades and find pure academics very unfulfilling.
I don't think there's a too old. You'll work until you're 65 right? Practically there are considerations in terms of what career you want in medicine, you might for instance want a shorter training route if you're older- some training pathways are 7 years not counting med school but GP for example is only 3 years post foundation. Or you might not up to you! There were people on my course who started med school in their late 30s and 40s and they've done a variety of things.
Great video! I have graduated this summer, but I have regrets what I studied (economics and languages) as I do not know what to do now. My ideal job is being a psychiatrist but I just have a lot of concerns -- Can I commit to the GAMSAT from a non science background? Can I pass the interview? I'll have to commit wait 2 more years at least before getting into med school. I'll be 30 when I graduate as a doctor plus the 5 years training.... I just don't know where I wanna be in life. I just do not know if I might suddenly not like med school. I guess I am not committed enough as I really value having free time to pursue other hobbies like travel, personal growth and figuring out what life is really about existentially (lol!) But the video is really helpful and motivating!
Hi, I passed all my GCSE’s but unfortunately they weren’t good enough to study science at A level so instead I went to college and did an extended diploma in health and social care. Becoming a doctor is always been my dream and I was thinking is it possible for me to do nursing first before doing medicine because my course isn’t enough to go straight to medicine. A lot of universities in GEM ask for work experience so I was just wondering do you think my nursing experience would be adequate or do you think I should try and get more experience in different placements. Thank you
I've known a few nurses converting to GEMs and they always have really great experience. You'd be able to demonstrate communication skills, understanding of the NHS dynamics, MDT working etc.
Hi, I did a literature degree and a PGCE. I want to pursue medicine, I don't understand how to apply or what I need to do. Do I sit the GAMSAT and then apply for medicine through UCAS?
Hi, this was really super helpful, not sure if u are still checking the channel, I did my bachelors in journalism n am currently interning ..I'm 24 now..if I get into GEM..I'll be in my 30s when I graduate..I had a huge personal loss which has made me consider going into medicine n making it the purpose of my life..do y think it is worth it in the end? n also what books did u use a sum1 from non science (me too) to prepare for GAMSAT

Great video as myself is a law graduate hoping to get into GEM Nottingham 2021, i was wondering what the best way to revise for part 3 of the GAMSAT, is there any books you used? Also what Uni did you study at?
Hi Mozart, sorry just saw this. I used the organic chem for dummies books and loads of TH-cam stuff - it's all in the vid. I also had a GAMSAT prep course but I'm not sure which one. There's a pic of the books I used on my insta if you scroll right back - there's alot of them!

Thanks! I would really like to go into medicine but I'm unsure whether I will be seen as a suitable candidate for the GEM course. I have a Psychology degree with the Open University, however, due to unfortunate circumstances which affected my grades my results were not what I had hoped for (2:2) and I achieved a B in all the sciences for GCSE. I've also just turned 30 and am a mother to two young children. Is this considered too old? How difficult is it to study the course when you have young children? Given these grades and circumstances would you say I have a chance of getting onto the course or are my chances very slim? I would really love to become a doctor and I'm really determined to do well but fearful of rejection.
@@lb4371 You're never too old. You're going to work until you're 65-70 right? Might as well do something you enjoy. Having a 2:2 prohibits entry to some uni's but not Nottingham and there are others, can't remember which. Contact Notts and find out if they'll accept an OU degree, likewise for the other unis. I went to med school with a young baby, it's hard but do-able and I loved that he was seeing me working to achieve my dreams, despite the sacrifices we had to make. I also received funding as a single mother. Call NHS BOSS bursaries to discuss your circumstances and see how much you may get. Everyone gets £1k annually but you may get more with your children. You may need to relocate your family if you're not near one of these unis. Is this doable? I know mothers who have done this for the 4 years but it is difficult if you depend on family support for childcare. I also got help financially with my childcare costs. If all the above is well, you will need to pass the GAMSAT and this is the most challenging part. You'll also need work experience. See my vid on med school with children, passing the GAMSAT and work experience if that helps. Best of luck, let me know how it goes.
I’m a graduate in psychology I’m trying to apply for medicine. Medicinal student who offers his services to help others told me that my choices are limited specially cause I don’t have English and maths gcse B or above and he also said I’m limited because of the fact that it’s psychology and not a lot of uni take that for gem .... so told me to maybe to consider one year college to do access to medicine course .... my gcse were c grades. So I dont know what to do now he said I can still try apply but my options will be limited cause they look at your gcse and few unis consider psycholgy bsc as a science. Please can anyone offer any advice?😭
Hi katerina, do you have a degree? Contact whichever uni's you want to apply to and ask them their requirements directly. Someone can usually talk through what you have and advise on what you'll need or if you're set. Good luck
