I bought one of these old Suzuki GT550's way back in 1983, it was a bit of a wreck, but, it was just in need of a new paint job, a seat cover, and new centre stand. It looked quite nice when I finished it. One thing I did find was that, there was a slight knocking sound on the left hand cylinder. Turned out to be left hand big end bearing which relies on transmission oil for lubrication. Keep an eye on oil level on all old Suzuki 2-stroke engines to avoid costly engine rebuild.
Hi great news best of luck you will enjoy. What I would suggest is to drain old engine oil and 2 stroke and replace with new. Remove fuel tank and clean all rust,dust old fuel out before filling with clean. Have a look at carbs and best to clean reservoir out as may be full of muck. Fit new plugs attach a battery and give it a kick. The good thing about two strokes is that they are a simple engine and she should start. Keep in touch, drop me a line if I can help. regards Brownie
I'm so jealous - please be kind to it. I had one in 1980, when I was 17. Dunstall fairing,drop bars and 3 into 3 expansions. It wasnt particularly fast but sounded fantastic.
Thanks, the guy that sold it to me had started it once a few days before and i had kicked it over and had it started just before we filmed it. I too had one when I was 17 thats what made me get another. We plan to covert it to a cafe racer just for fun.
Wow! Was that the first time you tried to start it in 20 years? Second kick!! I have a 76 GT550 that I bought new when I was 19. I just got it out after 6 years and it started right up. Great bikes. Maybe I will post a video too, Thanks
That was very encouraging......I just bought a GT550 that was on display on a high shelf in the Suzuki dealership....11,000 kms got it for $600.00 . Any suggestions how to go about starting it for the fist time in years would be welcome.
