The fixed hard top Cobra was originally built by Shelby for Le Mans, they were also the first Cobra's with the 289 Ford motor to race as FIA homologated cars. In 1963 they took part in the Le Mans 24 hour race, but they were still limited by their poor aerodynamics which the hardtop was supposed to improve. These cars resulted in the 1964 Daytona Coupe. There are quire a few original Cobra's racing in Europe with hardtops.
