Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro teams up with Legendary Pictures to bring audiences a unique take on the monster film with this sci-fi production. Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) stars as a washed-out controller and pilot of a series of robots called Jaegers, which are put into production after Earth is invaded by a species of giant monsters, the Kaijus. The Brothers Bloom's Rinko Kikuchi co-stars as a trainee whom Hunnam is psychically paired with in order to pilot the last beacon of hope -- a decommissioned Jaeger assigned to stop the Kaijus once and for all. Thor's Idris Elba leads the rest of the starring cast, which includes Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky and Ron Perlman.

That's one thing I loved about this movie. Every single Jaeger that died went down fighting.
Meanwhile...... Every single pilot from the second movie miraculously survived..... There was a sense of danger in this movie that the second just abandoned

Yeah I think he meant the pilots. Overall yeah, this movie had the stakes up high, and the threat of danger was real. The second one felt a little less though.

"You can always find me in the drift" that line makes a better story than the whole sequel.
I absolutely love how the "sequel" ignored everything from the storm to how the drift works. It's just a shame.
It was such a missed opportunity to have a scene in the sequel where Mako gets into a Jaeger, starts to chase the RABIT, and then re-lives a meaningful conversation or encounter with Stacker that helps her turn it around. So many good set-ups, and the sequel didn't pay off a single one of them.
The sequel never happened as far as I'm concerned.
The drift is highkey a Pacific Rim's force.

Such a cool choice too by Del Toro to have that be Mako’s only line to not get a subtitle. Didn’t need one.
I love how Herc reacts to finding out his son is going to blow himself up. He doesn't try to stop him or anything. Both of them are tough as nails warriors, and I think he had all the respect for his sons heroic sacrifice.
I feel Herc was lucky, I was originally going to be Herc and Chuck who detonate the bomb, because Herc got injured in the fight against Leatherback and Otachi, that's why Stacker went into the Jaeger, so Chuck's death was always going to be there

Striker Eureka was no joke. Slatter was the biggest, meanest Kaiju ever seen and Striker still man handled it to the point Slatter had to call for back up to do anything against it. And that was underwater, where kaiju have an edge against Jaegers. Just shows that had Leatherback not EMP'd Striker, he also could have solo'd them both like Gypsy did
Probably even faster, honestly. It’s kinda confusing that, considering leatherback was designed to defeat Striker and succeeded, the precursors didn’t just give one of the final three an EMP weapon.
True Striker is my favorite jaeger in the movie. The second movie was nothing compared to the first movie

I love striker but the point of Gypsy soloing those two was that Beckett was more experienced and did what striker could in a Jaeger two generations older than it showing that Gypsy’s pilots were stronger pilots
The leatherback only had the EMP because of the scientist that merged with the kaiju, then the kaiju knew exactly what kind of monsters to create to destroy the jeagers, Otachi was created to kill Crimson Typhoon, and the leather back was created to kill Cherno Alpha and Striker Eureka, they underestimated Gypsy, gypsy did the best because he saw what powers the monster had, he ripped leather backs EMP organ out as well as Otachi’s acid sprayer
moments the sequel literally never got, this is oscar worthy in comparison to how the sequel handles mako's death and basically any character motivation at all, actually a disgrace how much worse the script is for uprising
I have high hopes for the fact that Netflix is doing an anime for the series, I think it's gonna have at least 2 seasons but I could be wrong. From what I read it's about siblings who are trying to find their parents in the aftermath of all that's happened, using a jaeger to find their way in the world.
Mako dies? :( So sad... I wish Guillermo would have just waited for the right moment to make a sequel with the original cast... I didn't even bother to go watch this one.
What makes it worse that it changes up the whole dynamic the two shared. There´s a clear implication that Mako was the only child he looked after and raised after the rescue. The fact that he had a son off screen makes his respect now be called into question and that apparently he was too focused on one child over the other. Its bullshit and ruins a simple character.

Having the Category 5 Kaiju survive a nuclear detonation at that close of a range was quite unrealistic, at that close range, no living cell would be able to survive let alone a Kaiju the size of a skyscraper

According to Guillermo del Toro, the design team wanted Gipsy Danger to "feel like a classic, old gunslinger" (John Wayne) and designed its anatomy after that of a cowboy. del Toro also referenced tanker ships and art deco as an influence in Gipsy Danger's design. Even after this heroic sacrifice, the sense of danger and the fear that Gypsy still might not make it still lingers, and even grows stronger when you realize they sort of have a burden from Striker. Truly a great film.

One great thing about this movie is how it cares about details! To give us a sence of realism! From the heavy hits and angles, to this little one.
That's one more thing that Uprising has failed with: Looked like the pilots were in a electric treadmill stead of piloting a colossal robot!
When the machine ran, every thing ran with them. You can see it the way the bridge moved when it does.

There's a fanfic series out there called "Generation K" where they delve into that phrase. The fanfic isn't perfectly canon (Chuck, the Russian pilots, and 2 of the 3 Wei Siblings survive), but it's good.

2:37 I like what this scene shows, the kaijus believe it's just another attack, they can't fathom the idea of self sacrifice. It shows how powerful humans are, that we have a quality they don't.
This is one of many things that missing in the sequel, the emotion, the feels, and deep relationship between the pilots
And the since of danger and the apocalypse feel to it
The idea of a nuke being so powerful it literally dries the bottom of the ocean, even if only for a moment, is just so cool and unique. So naturally, it was left out of the video

Kaiju = Angel ( same concept of extra terrestrial being taking over the world even in human or monster form [possessed Newt])

It is pretty sad bc you know hansen will never see his son again but then Pentecost will never see his son ever again.
SAV1TAR Hansen(his dad) is both proud(for his selfless sacrifise) and sad(getting killed) of what happened to his son on one hand he was unable to reconcile there relationship as father and son(his son blames him for the death of his mom) 2nd no matter how his son hated him he was always there ready to assist him and to act as a father. After the death of Stacker P he replaced him after being promoted to Marshall of PPDC.

I always saw how solid and deadly a fighter like Stack was. He comes across the biggest & strongest Kaiju known and he and herc's son carve it up like its just a walk in the park. Had this been on land, the fight would have been more one sided. Striker would have not even needed help.

So we are just ignoring that Gypsy survives not only a nuclear blast but then the entire weight of the fricking Pacific ocean crashing down on it. Those kaijus must hit damn hard if they can damage jaegers, but that can't.
