My favorite line in cinematic history is in this movie. "Haven't you heard, Mr. Beckett? The world is coming to an end. Where would you rather die? Here, or in a Jaeger?" - The Legendary Stacker Pentecost.
Missed a win, there: scientists being taken seriously as scientists, despite clear social awkwardness, and not having to prove themselves to regular joes, who have no idea what they're talking about, but rather to _other_ scientists.
I'm more mad he didn't win the stepping over the bridge since it showcases that the jeagers are trying to save people not just killing kaijus. They avoid excess destruction where ever they can.
@@OneEyedGhoulX777 If you watch Neon Genesis Evangelion you will get all the references. The drifting, alien invaders, and many more. Why NGE? Because the anime is the closest references to Pacific Rim and the most well-done Mecha Anime.
@@OneEyedGhoulX777 it's not based on a specific anime though, just anime in general. Monster shows, real robot mecha shows, shounen battle series, etc.
One thing that was major attention to detail. In the final battle, all the holes and open hatches of the Jaegers are sealed before they go underwater. Striker doesn't use its chest mounted missile launcher, and Gipsy doesn't use its plasma cannon. Why? Because those would be opening ports of the Jaegers, allowing flooding.
Also because of the flooding issues. The Jaegers have machinery inside that can be damaged, especially by large amounts of sea water flooding in, and sea life. Striker Eureka using its missiles underwater is just asking for major damage.
well plasma underwater is not really great since it would cause a steam explosion and only damaging gipsy's arm and striker can't really use the missle launcher since it would flood the entire chest area causing lots of dmg and there really deep in the water so even if he opens it and their's no dmg the missiles could be crushed by the water pressure hitting it.
@@axlthien4993 both reasons, the pressure between underwater and inside a jeager is very different. And the missile didnt seem to be designed to operate underwater, as it wasnt a torpedo.
What makes the kaiju and Jaegers look so “real” in this movie, is the AMAZING way they display weight. These huge monsters *feel* huge, which makes them so believable for me! Especially the scene when Gipsy came crashing down in the beginning.
@@Seamusvg Kaiju is you we call the monsters in Japanese movies. So these monsters are inspired by the ones from Japanese movies. Hence, we call them kaiju. Godzilla and king Kong was originally Japanese movie monsters, so we call them kaiju as well. I'm not sure if I am right, but this is what I've been told.
fun detail / fan theory kind of? The Kaiju that were appearing before the big hong kong fight were all sea creature based, which makes sense because the rift is in the ocean. BUT after drifting with Charlie Day the kaiju that were grown were not only equipped with anti jaeger weaponry but also were based on terrestrial animals! animals that they wouldn't have had knowledge of prior. neat!
I love the attention to detail. In the Hong Kong battle, Gipsy succeeded where the others failed because 1. it ran on nuclear power. 2. It was fast enough to dodge the acid 3. The head wasn't as exposed as CTs. And when Newt drifted with the Kaiju brain, it figured out about Cherno, Striker and Typhoon, but not Gipsy, which is why it managed to come in and save the day (the Precursors didn't throw out a Kaiju that specialized in dealing with it). Now THAT is detail
I found Gipsy dodging the acid a little out of place. The rest of the movie the Jaegers are these massive machines that rightly take time in their movements. But in that instant she displays an uncanny quickness that's not seen again. They just needed to pull it off in a different way to keep the cohesion of the movie.
I like to think that even though they’re massive, after Mark 2 Jaegers; they were built for a little more agility, hence why cherno wasn’t able to dodge it while gipsey was, or it could be that in part of the movie, Cherno’s pilots stated they were hit with some type of acid, so Mako and Raleigh would go in knowing Otachi has some acid based ability
the girl who plays young mako had trouble pronouncing del toro's name during filming, so he let her nickname him totoro-san. just thought people would like to know.
Michael Haynes well I mean, English probably ain’t her first language, she’s probably Japanese and they refer to a lot of people with “San” at the end of their name.
@@vain-glorius Its like Mr., it's an honorific. Honorifics are a big part of the language and culture, given how important respect is to them, as a people.
The cockpits were also actually constructed. The holograms were CGI, but everything else in the cockpit shots was real. Including the water blasted at the actors.
Fun fact: Cherno alpha is the biggest heaviest and strongest jager in both movies with one of the highest kill counts Russians always have to one up everyone
Cherno is awesome also it had the Russian red star on its head bucket. I would also like to point out that it’s design is based off of both a nuclear smoke stack and hazmat suit. I really hope we can eventually get some prequels to Pacific Rim so we can see more Cherno, Crimson, and all the other Jaegers (and Kaiju) we didn’t see before
Fun facts: - If you'll notice in Raleigh and Chuck's fight scene, one of the things he uses against Chuck is an actual open-handed slap, followed by Raleigh dropping and using Chuck's weight against him. Now who used that exact same technique earlier in the film? That's right: Mako, during their "compatibility" montage. Chances are, Raleigh wasn't even thinking about it. He just went for it. They've only Drifted ONCE, and yet, he's already incorporating her movements into his fighting style. - Chuck is so antagonistic towards his father because when the first kaiju ever hit Sydney, Herc had a choice between saving Chuck's mum, Angela, or Chuck. He only had a few minutes to do so, seeing as Jaegers didn't exist back then and the only way to end kaijus were to nuke them. So he ended up picking Chuck, never knowing whether it was the kaiju or the nuke that killed his wife, and Chuck still resents him for it. - The Kaidonovskys hold a world record for longest neural handshake ever, clocking in at 18 hours. Theirs was a particularly interesting case, seeing as they were husband and wife, instead of being blood relatives. A true testament to how strong their bond is. - Mako's family made swords for a living. Her adding the chainsaw swords to Gipsy Danger is most probably her way of honoring her family's trade. - Raleigh was born in 1998; Mako and Chuck in 2003. - The blue streaks in Mako's hair symbolize the coat she was wearing the day she lost her family and the color of kaiju blood in general. It's her way of reminding herself that she WILL get revenge for her family someday. - The dominant pilots are usually on the right. (e.g. Herc, Sasha, Yancy, Stacker, etc.) - The pose Gipsy Danger does before going into battle - punching the left palm with a closed right fist - is actually a way of showing respect in martial arts. It basically says that the person doing it does not intend to harm innocent beings, and will only do so if provoked. - Among the last Jaegers, Cherno Alpha was the only one that didn't have escape pods. - There were over 51 Jaegers and kaijus made for this film. Every week, the staff would vote on their favorite ones. Most of the Jaegers were from countries found around the Pacific Ring of Fire, such as Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, and more. - The reason Newt and Hermann are Drift-compatible is because, just like Raleigh and Mako, they have sparred before ... only VERBALLY, and on a daily basis, too!
I just realized because of the second last fact, that the countries that are on the ring of fire are literally STRUGGLING, and then there's probably the rest of the world who have absolutely no threat whatsoever lol. Literally never realised that before. Also I wanted to add, Raleigh takes the right side in his and mako's first drift test because his left arm was severed when his brother died(it's in the movie but I just thought it was such a cool detail for the director to have kept in mind). Cherno(who, as I'm writing this I realize, is actually named after Chernobyl) didn't have escape pods because it's control chamber is built into its chest and not the head like all the modern jeagers. Which is also why it had been undefeated by any kaiju until newt drifted with the precursors. Because the kaijus hadn't known that it's pilots were in the chest and not the head. That's why the kaijus are able to destroy the pilot chamber in the chest after newt's drift.

@@ChaosSamurai well, the sequel exist and suck, but saying that it doesn't exist is stupid (I know is a joke, but the producer tried to make a sequel to a wonderful film, failing)
It's really due to lighting and inertia, the jaegers and kaiju have visible mass and the cinematography gives the feel of impact. They're also almost always portrayed in shadow, rain, or fog, which makes them look more realistic
that wasn't DeKnight. also, most of the movie was the studios decision/cut, many of the things we had problems with, he did as well. he even says that he would bring Mako back if he had a say in the matter

See, when you market a movie as an epic robot fighting film instead of a masterpiece of film, you get my money. They marketed this movie as what it was, and I loved it.
I met the male actor who piloted Cherno Alpha, back in 2015. He was at a an expo in New Jersey at a big hotel. I shook his enormous hand and asked him what it was like working on the set of Pacific Rim and he said “it was incredible”.
I saw a behind the scenes video of Pacific rim fairly recently and the female russian actress also talked about how del Toro made all the work actually physically challenging and that it was a realistic experience to be on the set
Pacific Rim is one of my favourite movies of all time, and I watch it a couple times a year. I was terrified of pacific rim 2 and every detail i heard about it made me more nervous. The end result is a disappointing garbage flop of a movie from people who had NO IDEA what made the first movie such a masterpiece. It was more like a Bayformers movie than anything else.
What sequel? There was never a Pacific Rim sequel. It never happened. There was some crap Asylum knock-off z-movie with John Boyega that tried to wear the skinsuit...
I just love it when a mech and pilot are created to be neurologically linked, allowing the pilot to feel touch and pain whenever a mech is doing something or is damage. This also incentivise the pilot to do their best to not get damaged in the first place too.

Pacific Rim was so freaking epic in scale and atmosphere. The bloody sound track alone and the music changes from Jeager to Jeager to Kaiju is just so damn phenomenal. It got me so hyped for a sequel that when the 2nd movie was announced i literally shouted "YES" in the middle of a crowded library. Then the heartbreaking disappointment when i actually watched it. It felt more akin to a shitty spinoff than a direct sequel. But we'll always have the masterpiece of a movie Pacific Rim.
Love the Cherno Alpha scene. The fact that they kept in mind it's the oldest operational Jäeger and incorporated that into the design is just top tier attention to the details of their script
@@haydennorris8062because this is the end. Only 4 jaegers made it. Knifehead was the start of kaiju being fitted more for anti jaeger combat and generally stronger. A great example of listening to the fans complain about how often I mention the score. All my soundtrack wins are on the cutting room floor, except for the one during Mako's memory. Never again, because while it's not my favorite, I still really liked it. And Ramin Djawadi deserves a win or two.
The line "Sensei aishitemasu" actually hurts even more when you know that "aishiteru" (The root form) Is never really used as a way of saying I love you. To many people the word is so strong that many married couples are even hesitant to use it, a friend of mine said they would only use it if it were the last time they could say that they loved someone or they were on their death bed.
Scott Sensanbaugher Yeah, I'm with @Indra K here. It would make no sense for a Japanese character to suddenly switch to Mandarin to say goodbye to her adoptive father/guardian, especially since she just says two words to him in that scene. Either way, the message is still there.
you know... that knowing head touch has more than just hollywood cliche dodges. The "knowing" head touch is that they already know what they're feeling. They're putting their heads together, *kinda* like when they drift. They already know what they're thinking
I love that they kept good lighting on the jaegers and kaijus by using headlights and helicopter lights. Too often a great action scene with giant monsters are ruined by too much darkness.
I'd like to point out that one of my favorite elements in this film is that you could still recognize the anatomy of both the jaegers and the kaiju. In the Transformers films, almost all of the Autobots and the Decepticons looked the same. The only real distinguishing aspects were the tiny splashes of color from the paint. In Pacific Rim, the jaegers and the kaiju all had their own unique look, so on top of the movements being unique (As pointed out in the video), you could still just glance at them, even during the action scenes, and know who was who.
In Transformers, both teams are Cybertronians, who decided to pick sides and fight eachothers. I think the message there is "no matter what side you're one, you're still one of our race." Drift was once a Decepticon, but he was an Autobot in 4, and they were cool with it. In this movie, it's robots vs an alien race. If they had looked the same, it wouldn't make sense.
Yes, but what he means is that the differences between the Jeagers themselves are pretty big. Not just slight paint differences, but differences so big you can just see 1 second of a fight and instantly identify WHICH Jeager is fighting: Gipsy Danger with is chest reactor, Strike Eureka with its dual swords, the blocky, rectangular "head" of Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon and his 3 arms, etc. Even the kaijuu have big enough diferences that you can tell them apart at a glance. Basically, you can see a second of a fight and instantly be able to say "Yep, thats Gipsy Danger fighting Knifehead", or "Thats Strike Eureka euthanazing Mutavore!". The same cannot be said for transformers.
LetztezBatallion I kinda agree. The first 3 have everyone almost unrecognizable, but TF4 has some differences. Optimus has the knight look, Hound's the only fatass, Drift's a samarai, Crosshairs has a skirt-looking thing, Galvatron has a hole in his chest (is everyone trying to be Iron Man?)..... Well, that's about it. Can't find anything generic about the others.
The same can DEFINITALLY be said for transformers. If you care about the characters at all (and if you have seen more than just the Micheal Bay films, you should), it becomes easy to recognize named characters and distinguish them from eachother.
This line is so underrated, especially when you watch it in context and not just read it: Newton created a neural bridge from garbage and drifted with a kaiju!
Little Mako's scene was probably the highlight of the movie to me. That little actress made me feel every bit of the emotional turmoil and terror she was going through, without any words (great CGI too)! Epic through and through!
How about "Today we celebrate our independence day!!" Or "Tonight we dine in hell!!" Well, to each their own. But there are lots of good line deliveries.
Works especially better in my opinion since they had a literal scheduled time that the world would end, well it was just a countdown but it’s never added to so yeah ig the guys just had a little sticky note on their calendars saying “End of The World, don’t forget lunch”
I wouldn't be so sure about the "just guard the rift" thing. The Kaiju have _major_ advantages fighting in water - heck, they're clearly water-based animals first and foremost, struggling to support their weight out of water. The Jaegers lose most of their mobility and their weapons, while the Kaiju only get stronger. Just watch how the Kaiju move in water.
I love how they made the jagers from the difference countries Russia is mainly knowed for hard hitting heavy armor and slow moving Japan and Chinese army's in the past are fast moving and quick hitting the u.s.a that's a tough one but there a medium not to fast not to slow but also not to armored or hard hitting there a all rounder of damage speed power and maneuverability
See also Nostalgia Critic. Although he mostly bitch and moan about different problems in the end he always give sincire, objective opinion. He even once or two in the end of long, looong strip of insults said "do i think it's bad? Welll... no actually" and then started praising it for what it done to the culture or people. I can't say he focuses more on the positives... but it's at worst 50/50
when car guys mean by a car being "clean", they don't mean it's clean, like not dirty, they mean it looks brand new and well maintained. That car was well maintained before the owner decided to skaddadle the fuck away from the kaiju because he/she could die from a kaiju. The car is still clean through the dirt and debris If you were sarcastic or joking, my apologies but I am very bad at detecting sarcasm on the internet, or a joke. The emojis dont help. Anyways, I hope you understand what car guys mean by a car being "clean". Have a good day.
Something I really liked about this movie was that every fight and side story felt important. All the fights had high stakes, the side stories actually contributed to the main plot in an interesting way that didn’t feel unnecessary. And again, each fight pushed the story forward and developed the world, while still being enjoyable to watch and staying entertaining. Plus, each fight was unique
I never saw how it needed to be defended, as they already gave a sufficient answer in the movie before that scene. I guess a lot of people just forgot that Kaiju blood is toxic, and just decided to hate the sword anyway out of embarrassment.
I really didn't think about the toxic blood thing, I just thought it was stupid awesome like the rest of the movie. Like, yah, it doesn't make sense but NOTHING DOES lol it would never stop me from enjoying this kind of movie.
Everything makes sense until you remember Crimson Typhoon uses 3 edged weapons. Unless its a statement about how China doesn't care about the environment, the sword reveal is still kinda dumb.
The boat sword-baseball bat part is so awesome. I was overtaken by pure, raw, condensed HYPE during that scene. Come on. Recount. That deserves at least 10 points on its own.
Fun fact: 愛しています has more impact than "I love you" as this form is typically used as a final confession of love, accepting that this will probably be the last time she will ever be able to say it, and taking the opportunity to say it. In english, we don't have a true translation for this, same 大好き which also gets translated often as "I love you" but is more of a first confession of love.
I always thought this movie was underrated, it has such good effort put into that you've grandously explained. It's a shining jewel to the kaiju genre. Lore: I like Jeagers: I love Kaiju: I love Characters: I like (Most of all the bickering Newton and Hermann xD) Plot: I'm cool with it, it has a moral I like. Overall for me: I love it, it's good! :)
Jaegers* Please forgive me for pointing out grammatical mistakes, but we germans get so little attention in pop culture that I´d appreciate it if people remember what little we get correctly
A neat thing I noticed with this movie was the design of the kaijus themselves, they start off as animals you would expect to find deep underwater but the ones we see getting fought are faster and have special adaptations to help deal with the jaegers e.g. leatherback’s emp. But after the drift is preformed with the kaiju brain, the aliens find out about the plan to seal the breach so the send really powerful kaijus to try and take down the last of the jaegers before they can seal the breach
I believe this started with the Cat 3 kaiju like knifehead, which were designed to pierce the jaegers. I believe even the Mutavore was said to have defeated a jaeger before getting annihilated by striker. Cat 3-4 are when the precursors really start to design anti jaeger kaiju rather than kaiju focused on destroying cities
i just love how this can be epic with good visuals and cgi for once, all of those cheap chinese robot vs big monster movies really gave this theme a bad name, this changed all of that!
As much as I loved this movie, my biggest complaint was some of the side characters literally came into existence to die. The Russian couple was praised for being so amazing with such an old Jaeger, and they literally died after throwing a couple punches. I know the Kaiju in that fight are supposed to be incredibly powerful [with abilities no one's encountered yet], but the Russians and Chinese basically turned into red shirts.
I'm aware, but they were two-on-two [I know there was a third jaeger, but it was supposed to sit back]. It just sort of sucked that the russians and chinese were touted as these really badass figures, only to die like a bunch of goons.
Yeah that bugged me a lot, I kinda wish they weren't killed off, maybe taken out of the fight instead, same with the Chinese. Technically they had the second most power Jaeger behind the Striker. And the Russians had 6 years worth of experience fighting Kaiju. Though it was done to show how dangerous the Kaiju were.
It would have been better if they had a bit more character development but them dying seems to go along with the plot. The Kaiju attacks were destroying Jaegers faster than they could be built which is why the governments of the world abandoned the project. It makes scene that one or both would be wrecked in that fight.
That's really my main issue. I don't really have an issue with them dying. If they had been just another couple of "mooks", final vestiges of the Jaeger program, then whatever, but instead we're told how badass the five pilots were, and they die rather unceremoniously. Gee... Splendid...
This is unironically one of my favourite movies because its so entertaining. I would never think that this film would make me tear up in places and one visually it was stunning. I'm so happy you brought up the ways in which they played up that sense of scale and nothing can beat the visceral joy I feel when they just twat the kaiju with the ship. It was rediculous but not out of place or jarring. Don't get me started on how much I loved Newton and Gottleib's relationship going from their bickering to actual comraderie. Its a shame you didn't get to see the other pilots truly shine. It's a shame the movie did not get the love it deserves.
Of all monster films, this one is and still holds up as the best. The weight and strength of the mechs is amazing. And the kaijues are all damn terrifying and yet so well created with that incredible cgi and design. The story as well is more interesting than the sequel that I regret ever watching. Not to forget, the fighting is just as good every time I look through them. It feels gritting and gets me at the edge of my seat always rooting for the good guys. Never have I ever been bored of it because it’s just too damn awesome of a movie. Not many monster movies are as good as Pacific Rim in my opinion.
When you're able to name each of the Jaegers from start to finish Horizon Brave Romeo Blue Tacit Robin Gypsy Danger Crimson Typhoon Cherno Alpha Striker Eureka And the Jaeger is Mako's flashback. The one Stacker Pentacost is standing on is called Coyote Tango
The fourth is technically spelled Gipsy Danger. It is shown in the movie at some point between when Yancy and Raleigh wake up and when they get into the Jaeger.
Another detail I have yet so see anyone notice. Leatherback and Otachi were specifically designed to take down Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon, and Striker Eureka. The aliens were building the gen 3-4 Kaiju in order to counter the Jaegers on an individual basic, Knifehead was designed to be able to avoid Gipsy Dangers grappling moves by having the knife on its head for instance. Cherno, Crimson, and Striker have 6, 7, and 10 kills respectively before Hong Kong, so the aliens had encountered them many times and knew what to expect. Otachi had the claw on its tail to stand even against Crimson Typhoons three-arms and acid spit to compromise Cherno’s immense armor, while Leatherback’s EMP was made to stop Striker and possibly Crimson Typhoon if Otachi failed. It’s details like this that make me appreciate the movie so much more.
Tbh I did not think about that, see gipsy was the one that I understand but wow it is kinda crazy, my confusion is wouldn’t the aliens know that gipsy was still living?
@@djsurf2254no, gipsy was just repaired by the time Hong Kong fight happened. And then to top it off, by the time newt drifted with the kaiju, gipsy was not allowed to be deployed due to pilot complications. Therefore gipsy had the advantage of being unexpected
Pacific Rim deserves to be a classic to be watched for generations. It's just so freaking entertaining and well thought out. I have not seen a movie in recent times that is as memorable, lived up to and even exceeded it's entertainment potential as this movie.
Mad Max did what this movie couldn't IMO. By the trailers alone I thought Pacific Rim would be one of my favorite movies of all time. But it left me feeling disappointed. Then Mad Max came along, and again by the trailers it looked like everything I'd want in a movie. That time it delivered in every way and is now my favorite movie of all time. I'm still very excited for PR 2!
I loved the two moments when Mako suddenly spoke Japanese. The first, when Gypsy Danger used the sword weapon on the Kaiju, and the second, when Striker Eureka sacrificed itself. SPOILER! The sequel did a huge disservice to Mako. Tsk. An ideal third installment should feature the return of Hunnam and Kikuchi (Mako) and their eventual sacrifice. The sacrifice will led them to hand over the reins to the new generation of Jaeger pilots. Unfortunately, Uprising blew it!
Fun Fact: The Japanese lines from Mako Mori are not spoken by actress Rinko Kikuchi, even though she is perfectly capable and is a native speaker of the language. Instead, the lines are spoken by Megumi Hayashibara. Who is that you ask? Among other things she was the voice of Rei Ayanami in the animated series that inspired Pacific Rim, "Neon Genesis Evangelion." th-cam.com/video/FKKBXouWUhE/w-d-xo.html
I love this f***ing movie, don't care what anyone says. Its cinema at its best, not in an arthouse or classical-style of way (although its technical aspects are inmaculate), but is everything a movie needs to be: artistic and sincere with its audience. Plus, Del Toro put arguably some decent philosophies into the story , not to mention the spectacular world-building and designs for the environmets and the main Kaijus and Jaegers as well. Also, many tend to overlook the mesmerizing details in the concepts like you mentioned in the video, such as the acidic blood (the actual reason for the sword to be deployed in space and underwater), the age and capabilities of the Jaegers and obviously, the Kaijus nature towards its environment. The acting is, overall, GREAT, Elba and Kikuchi being the definete showstealers here.

I have a lot of a favorite scenes in this movie but the one that stood out to me the most was when Raleigh brings Gypse Danger back to the coast by himself after defeating a Kaiju alone. I love the scene of Gypse Danger emerging out of the fog and lumbering onto the beach. You get a sence of how big these machines are.
Actually, no. A rocket punch is when the fist separates from the arm to punch things that are far away. Just google "Mazinger Z rocket punch" for reference.
“Raleigh is a great protagonist, he proves this by overcoming hardship and being one of the only two to run solo.” Me after watching pacific rim the black: There’s three actually
wasn't it said in the black that there were quite a few who did solo runs but only a handful where successful and taylor either picked at random or the one that went the best for the ghost drift he did, and I'm pretty sure Stacker and Raleigh weren't on the list, which, if I'm right, I'm guessing is due to both doing solo runs in old model jeagers so the data from the solo run was never transmitted and archived anywhere but then again if taylor did chose the one that went best, it would have either been stacker or Raleigh, since Raleigh killed a kaiju whilst feeling and experiencing his brother's death before getting the jaeger back to land which was when he finally stopped piloting, Stacker on the other hand had his copilot pass out then said "fuck it, I'll do it on my own" and killed a kaiju, so really Raleigh would be the best choice but probably wouldn't be picked out of a risk that his ghost would allow the more than likely debilitating pain of his brother's death to bleed over to Taylor thus possibly deterring people from using him for the run, or that may be why he's not there as they didn't want anyone drifting with his ghost due to some1 trying before and the pain bleeding over probably had some serious adverse effects on the person and they didn't want to risk it again, as for stacker in this case it'd probably still be due to him doing the solo run in what I believe was a 1st gen jaeger and they just didn't think to recorde the drift/run data since the knew everything worked and no-one ever thought someone would try or have to do a solo run Also the edit was done on my phone so excuse formatting errors and other stuff
Wow, that's like...wow. I never considered that. I always just say I got more comfortable and found my voice, but it's so true. The first 30 videos, I didn't know who I was talking to. But now having a solid audience who responds to things I say... Wow, that just totally blew my mind.
CinemaWins yup man love the channel get genuinely giddy and happy when there's a new video posted. That Scott Pilgrim video that Dope I share that same love for that movie
8:09 also Mako remembered the sword, Raleigh had given up at this point but Mako was blood thirsty and shouted "For my family" and gets the sword out, I mean its a damn good build up for the sword and shows why the both are perfectly compatible because they always have each other's back👌
Ya know what I love about the jeagers in this movie, they actually look and feel like giant bipedal war machines with slow and heavy punches, they also had different generations of jeagers to keep it interesting, cherno alpha was a mk1, gypsy danger was a mk3, crimson typhoon was a mk4 and striker Eureka was a mk5 and you could see the technology in the jeagers getting better with each generation, cherno actually looked like a tank on legs with slow but incredibly strong punches, when we first see gypsy she's a slow yet powerful tank just like cherno but when we see her in action after she was repaired and upgraded to sort of a mk3.5 we can see that gypsy is a lot faster while still packing one hell of a punch, really great stuff that the sequel didn't deliver on unfortunately
11:45 There is camera shake, but I actually think that this film is a wonderful example of how to use it well as a cinematographic tool. It's never just slapped on a scene to just make things feel edgy and hectic, but is used to sell the sheer size and power of the combatants. Gypsy Danger's entrance in the fight against Otachi is a perfect example, where the camera briefly quakes with the thud of the first couple of strides, but then quickly settles down. Yes, we get a few shaky cockpit scenes in response to heavy blows, but the camera shake never causes you to lose track of what's happening on screen. It's how it should be done.
Actually, no, HISHE wasn't correct about building the Jaeger base right next to the portal. That's a stupid and nonsensical complaint about this movie. So they want to build the base out in the ocean, hundreds of miles away from the nearest landmasses? Such a base would take quite some time to build, due to all the building materials having to be shipped way out into the ocean. And what if a Kaiju appears while the base isn't done yet? It promptly gets destroyed. Building it would be impractical. And the base would require hundreds of mechanics and other personnel to be there at all times. That would require a huge supply chain for food and other necessities to be shipped out to the base. Another huge impracticality. And the movie demonstrates that Jaegers aren't as effective at fighting Kaiju underwater. Gipsy and Striker move slower than they normally do, and the water gives the Kaiju a huge movement advantage. On top of that, fighting underwater presents a greater risk to the pilots. If a Jaeger's head were to be ripped open like what happens to Gipsy, the pilots would drown. Therefore, it's preferable for the Jaegers to fight the Kaiju on land or in shallow water. And what if a Kaiju were to somehow slip past the underwater base and make it to land somewhere? Good luck catching it before it starts destroying city after city. The Jaegers are spread out across the world so that they can defend as large an area as possible.
Hi there how the hell would they do it before the attacks began, they had no idea about them until the first one came out, and they come out fairly quickly it would seem
the fist stopping right before hitting the office table was a show of just how powerful AND precise the Yager robots really are, they are not clumsy machines, these things cost BILLIONS to make and BILLIONS to maintain.
Honestly I would add an extra win for the entire Typhoon and Cherno fight against Otachi and Leatherback. Even when there are individual wins thrown in, the whole sequence works great as a cinematic fight scene, it's fun and interesting, builds character with Striker Eureka's disobeying of Stacker's commands and it adds a lot of tension for the final dive into the rift, as these two very powerful weapons against the Kaiju are destroyed, both depleting humanity's resources and once again establishing the incredible threat that Kaiju are. The two Jaegers, despite their very short screentime, are also filled with personality, which makes their eventual destruction almost hard to watch. I still watch the scene every now and then and each time I hope it will end differently even when I know what will happen.
Pretty much. On the one hand, they're awesome so why would you take them out so quickly? On the other hand, it kinda adds a visceral feeling to the battle. Like it doesn't matter how awesome you are if you're having a bad day on the battle field.
I still think one of the most amusing product placements I've seen is in the "chest reactor button" scene, with a logo on-screen for only a few frames that implies the Jaeger's entire system allegedly runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon.
My favorite line in cinematic history is in this movie.
"Haven't you heard, Mr. Beckett? The world is coming to an end. Where would you rather die? Here, or in a Jaeger?" - The Legendary Stacker Pentecost.
"We can either stay here, or grab these flares and do something really stupid!"

Pacific rim: when an anime concept was put into a live action movie and it DIDN’T suck

@@SonofSethoitae i mean where else can we see giant massive gigantic robot fighting Humongous monsters?
Edge of tomorrow is good too
One thing that was major attention to detail.
In the final battle, all the holes and open hatches of the Jaegers are sealed before they go underwater. Striker doesn't use its chest mounted missile launcher, and Gipsy doesn't use its plasma cannon. Why? Because those would be opening ports of the Jaegers, allowing flooding.
Gypsy couldn't use her plasma cannon due to the underwater pressure
Striker couldn't use his missile launcher because slattern damaged it
Also because of the flooding issues.
@Nunya Business well gipsy avenger was a more advanced Jaeger, The Jaeger probably had rockets that was similar to torpedoes
What makes the kaiju and Jaegers look so “real” in this movie, is the AMAZING way they display weight. These huge monsters *feel* huge, which makes them so believable for me! Especially the scene when Gipsy came crashing down in the beginning.
Exactly the second one had not timing or planning cuz ten years doesn’t justify the agility or weightless jaegers
There's a second part to it, that they were designed to still LOOK like humans in costumes. And they succeeded.
And the Jaegers were slow as faaaaaak. But in the second movie they were a lot faster.
I have a question is this part of the godzilla series or Is kaiju a term for monsters
BUT after drifting with Charlie Day the kaiju that were grown were not only equipped with anti jaeger weaponry but also were based on terrestrial animals! animals that they wouldn't have had knowledge of prior. neat!

@@dementedcreations8971 ok
@@crownjules1 this movie is not as good as people say it is. There is alot of plot holes.

Fun facts:
- If you'll notice in Raleigh and Chuck's fight scene, one of the things he uses against Chuck is an actual open-handed slap, followed by Raleigh dropping and using Chuck's weight against him.
(e.g. Herc, Sasha, Yancy, Stacker, etc.)
- The pose Gipsy Danger does before going into battle - punching the left palm with a closed right fist - is actually a way of showing respect in martial arts.
WOW😮
This is an underrated comment
What is your source? Amazing facts!
Finally actual fun facts and not just the same regurgigated facts everyone already knows.

You that know main theme? (the one you get instantely when you youtube "pacific rim theme") is my go-to work out song now. has a bit of a run up and BAM! it all kicks it just when you're hitting your stride.
They should've mentioned the soundtrack.
He will be the successor of Hanz Zimmer in the genre of heroic movies as well as science fiction.
A great example of listening to the fans complain about how often I mention the score. All my soundtrack wins are on the cutting room floor, except for the one during Mako's memory. Never again, because while it's not my favorite, I still really liked it. And Ramin Djawadi deserves a win or two.
+CinemaWins ding! ding!
The line "Sensei aishitemasu" actually hurts even more when you know that "aishiteru" (The root form) Is never really used as a way of saying I love you. To many people the word is so strong that many married couples are even hesitant to use it, a friend of mine said they would only use it if it were the last time they could say that they loved someone or they were on their death bed.
did you just confused Japanese and Mandarin?
Xièxiè is mandarin for thank you, Sensei is Japanese for Teacher or Master
Scott Sensanbaugher Yeah, I'm with @Indra K here. It would make no sense for a Japanese character to suddenly switch to Mandarin to say goodbye to her adoptive father/guardian, especially since she just says two words to him in that scene.
Either way, the message is still there.
you know... that knowing head touch has more than just hollywood cliche dodges. The "knowing" head touch is that they already know what they're feeling. They're putting their heads together, *kinda* like when they drift. They already know what they're thinking
*ahem*
"weeeeeee are gooonnnnaaaaa poooooork toooniiiiiiiite"
James Steele:
I didn't think about that. That's a really good point. Cool. I love this movie all the more!
I'm a little disappointed you didn't add in a few points for the scene after the nuclear explosion where the water was vacant and came rushing back in

Actually it was dirty, didn't you see the debri on it ?? 🤔😂
when car guys mean by a car being "clean", they don't mean it's clean, like not dirty, they mean it looks brand new and well maintained. That car was well maintained before the owner decided to skaddadle the fuck away from the kaiju because he/she could die from a kaiju. The car is still clean through the dirt and debris

I love how u defend the sword scene
Post script
They were all good explanations 😉

Kaipyro67ALT I think it will

As much as I loved this movie, my biggest complaint was some of the side characters literally came into existence to die. The Russian couple was praised for being so amazing with such an old Jaeger, and they literally died after throwing a couple punches. I know the Kaiju in that fight are supposed to be incredibly powerful [with abilities no one's encountered yet], but the Russians and Chinese basically turned into red shirts.
It was also the first double event. No one knew how to deal with that.
When you're able to name each of the Jaegers from start to finish
Horizon Brave
Romeo Blue
Tacit Robin
Gypsy Danger
Crimson Typhoon
Cherno Alpha
Striker Eureka
And the Jaeger is Mako's flashback. The one Stacker Pentacost is standing on is called Coyote Tango
Well done
What about Brawler Yukon?
It's actually Tacit Ronin
@@bromodragone8405 That is true

Cafelogis it's up there with Independence Day and Armageddon
I loved the two moments when Mako suddenly spoke Japanese. The first, when Gypsy Danger used the sword weapon on the Kaiju, and the second, when Striker Eureka sacrificed itself.
SPOILER!
The sequel did a huge disservice to Mako. Tsk. An ideal third installment should feature the return of Hunnam and Kikuchi (Mako) and their eventual sacrifice. The sacrifice will led them to hand over the reins to the new generation of Jaeger pilots. Unfortunately, Uprising blew it!
elendil eleassar yeah... I hate Uprising with all my being
Fun Fact: The Japanese lines from Mako Mori are not spoken by actress Rinko Kikuchi, even though she is perfectly capable and is a native speaker of the language. Instead, the lines are spoken by Megumi Hayashibara. Who is that you ask?
The acting is, overall, GREAT, Elba and Kikuchi being the definete showstealers here.

is the black any good? It feels similar to Pacific Rim 2 which is turning me off
@@jammygamer8961 It’s nothing like pacific rim 2, you should try it
The Black is awesome!
Actually, there’s four if you include *Taylor Travis.*
wasn't it said in the black that there were quite a few who did solo runs but only a handful where successful and taylor either picked at random or the one that went the best for the ghost drift he did, and I'm pretty sure Stacker and Raleigh weren't on the list, which, if I'm right, I'm guessing is due to both doing solo runs in old model jeagers so the data from the solo run was never transmitted and archived anywhere but then again if taylor did chose the one that went best, it would have either been stacker or Raleigh, since Raleigh killed a kaiju whilst feeling and experiencing his brother's death before getting the jaeger back to land which was when he finally stopped piloting, Stacker on the other hand had his copilot pass out then said "fuck it, I'll do it on my own" and killed a kaiju, so really Raleigh would be the best choice but probably wouldn't be picked out of a risk that his ghost would allow the more than likely debilitating pain of his brother's death to bleed over to Taylor thus possibly deterring people from using him for the run, or that may be why he's not there as they didn't want anyone drifting with his ghost due to some1 trying before and the pain bleeding over probably had some serious adverse effects on the person and they didn't want to risk it again, as for stacker in this case it'd probably still be due to him doing the solo run in what I believe was a 1st gen jaeger and they just didn't think to recorde the drift/run data since the knew everything worked and no-one ever thought someone would try or have to do a solo run
Also the edit was done on my phone so excuse formatting errors and other stuff

GeneralSecura Let's Plays I hate HISHE
GeneralSecura Let's Plays wouldn't what happened to Cherno be a better example of why they fight in shallow water on land etc.

That was a lot to process but still it's true
And if the base was built there before the attacks began? Did u think of that?

Right on.
The Black was good, it had nice animations
the fist stopping right before hitting the office table was a show of just how powerful AND precise the Yager robots really are, they are not clumsy machines, these things cost BILLIONS to make and BILLIONS to maintain.
My biggest question is if, in the desperation caused by an apocalypse, if money mattered less than the development of the Jaegers.
6:47 Gyyyyyyspy Danger. That was so perfect, the soundtrack needs some lyrics!
5:36 Correction you can't watch that without crying.
I still think one of the most amusing product placements I've seen is in the "chest reactor button" scene, with a logo on-screen for only a few frames that implies the Jaeger's entire system allegedly runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon.
