Mark, your bookshelf is looking so beautiful... still very excited for a room tour again lol. Please keep up the great work and I just wanted to say how fast this channel is growing as well.
When you first showed the tablets the first thought that jumped to mind was that these are seltzer tablets. The results of your water testing would seem to confirm my suspicions. Seltzer tablets are made of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda pressed into a tablet). They should definitely increase carbonate hardness because they're directly adding carbonates to the water.
Everyone who uses CO2 tablets finds out that it raises their pH and hardness. They're all most likely sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) tablets. It's often used in vitamin or antacid tablets to produce that 'fizz' as it dissolves. As your pH gets higher, it takes longer to dissolve the tablets so even though the reaction does produce CO2, it can't ever give nearly enough needed. They're not wrong in that it does produce CO2, just not in the quantities we need.
When you showed amazon the Sera tabs next to the ones you purchased I've used those combined with the sera tab reactior/diffuser . They are supplied as a kit called Sera CO2 start, works very well in a small aquarium without altering the parameters
Okay, thank you for ending the debate about these dang pills! But more importantly thank you for the super SUPER cheap and easy DIY alternative to the expensive setups! 😭❤️👏 I'll be trying it out at some point!
CO2 tablets are Baking Soda. You can raise pH and kH with Baking Soda... and a very small amount of CO2 will be released as it reacts with acids in the water. Only good if someone has very low kH and very soft water but wants to keep livebearers or Africans.
I'm thankful you did a water test after the tablets. I am surprised your PH and KH went up so high. I thought CO2 is supposed to help lower a high pH, which is what I am trying to achieve.
I’m glad I didn’t waste my money trying the cheaper co2 routes! I’ve had pressurized co2 for over a month now. Sure it was expensive initially but there’s no question if I’m getting enough co2 or not!
if you want to use co2 tablets more effectively, place the tablets in the diffuser box, so that the gas is trapped in the box, then dissolves with water. box I mean like the bottle upside down on the tropica co2 system. in my country using a DIY box for co2 tablets, effectively lowering the ph from 7.4 to 6.7 and getting a green co2 indicator. You can replace the tablet with a cylinder of co2, and save your money, because an inverted bottle doesn't need high pressure to fill it. only 1 bubble per second, put the co2 hose into the bottle without going through the diffuser, you don't really need high pressure.
It's not Co2 in the pills but some kind of acid, like seachems Acid buffer. The way it works is it dissolves available carbonate hardness (Kh) in your water into available co2. Seems like these pills are a combination of acid and alkalinity buffer, to try and maintain a stable ph while dissolving the carbonate hardness into co2.. and clearly doesn't do a great job at it lol. This is also probably why some people see actual changes and others don't see any change at all, because it depends on your water parameters and what is available for these pills to alter.
It's the opposite of an acid, it's a base. A carbonate/bicarbonate to be exact, probably mixed with an acid, most likely citric acid as it has a solid form to form carbon dioxide and a citric acid salt. [on a side note: CO₂, please, not Co2 (Co ist Cobalt, a heavy metal)]
Excellent video, like others say - looks like a chalk tablet. A few months ago I added a CO2 system to my tank. The canister is rented with a £50 deposit, costs £15 to refill and the needle hasn’t moved since day 1 so I think it’ll last about 8months between refills. The regulator and defuser cost £150 but that’s a one off purchase. The change in the plants is amazing - and technically it’s all very easy. There’s basically no extra maintenance. I thought CO2 would be expensive and complicated, so far, it’s working out to be nearly 0 running cost and it’s created no extra work for me at all. Wish I’d done it years ago!
You do valuable work. I am fortunate to have no difficulty affording injected CO2, but I still like to see the options checked out. You never know when things will change--especially in your aquarium.
i use the same tabs for my 5 gallon tank....... I normally use 2 tab per day and I get decent growth..... the plants in my tank are s.repen, cobomba, monte carlo and dwarf hairgrass.
If you’re strapped for CO2, you can make one. Just use a 1 liter bottle, 1 cup of sugar, 1/3 packet of quick rise yeast. Drill a hole into the cap and glue an air line tube into it. Attach a co2 diffuser stone to the other end. Fill the bottle 2/3 with water and shake up before placing on the cap. Put the diffusing en into the tank and leave it. Runs for two weeks before redoing the bottle mixture, and if you have animal stock, ALSO use an air stone to not kill them. Cost like $35.
You can get a 5lb co2 tank for 50 bucks and a nice regulator for another 50 and the co2 fill is 15 So even with the c02 diffuser, co2 line and a drop checker you would be at less than 150 US dollars.
Drop all the remaining tablets in a glass of water with a drop checker and stir every now and then - does it ever change colour? How is the diffuser working with your yeast co2? I was under the impression that it either can't produce enough pressure for that or that it clogs too fast.
Yeah maybe I will do that! Curious to know if it would be able to change the color. The diffuser works great, if you make sure gas can't escape anywhere then you should have enough pressure.
@@MJAquascaping Now that i think about it, wouldn't the raised kh just prevent the drop checker from working as it should? I guess it would depend on how much they raise the kh compared to the co2 they release and is actually dissolved in the water...
Mark, I was hoping that the experiment would work. You save lots of us money. My Nano tank doesn't have co2, the carpet plants are not growing well. Thanks
the DIY method of sugar and yeast works well and it's cheaper, one can also tweak the preparation process to make it easier and efficient..I don't see any reason why anyone would go for the tablet route. If the co2 from the tablet doesn't get show in the drop checker, I wonder if it has the same properties, or if not just basically a tablet version of Excel.
Hello bro. i watched many of your videos.. can u explain me something? I made an dyi co2 system like u have and sadly i cant use it with a diffuzer... to low pressure to make it work.. how do u use a diffuzer with that dyi system?
You have to really make sure that there is no leak anywhere. If there is no leak it has to work with pretty much any diffuser besides maybe the bazooka type atomizer and inline diffuser
What if it’s simply not enough co2? I started adding co2 to my tank 3g. I was adding 1 bubble per 3 sec and slowly increased it but those first few days it was blue all day
my theory is this might be some form of maybe a calcium carbonate. The reason why it dissolve slower over the past couple of days is because the more of these tablets dissolve in the water column, the more it reduces the acidity simply because of the carbonate (and maybe the calcium), as for the GH, it's probably due to the calcium in the tablet or what ever it is that is in the tablet, as for the KH, well.. it's a carbonated tablet so there's your answer.
Hey MJ would you consider having a skimmer on that last tank? cause I see the bubbles getting stuck on the surface. Nice videos man, love them, you are one of the few that the experiments are helping me all the time! Cheers!

@@MJAquascaping Thank You so much. They are beautiful! Now if only I could speak/read German? Have a great week. And your tanks are absolutely #1. And your knowledge you share is superb.
Interesting to see those tabs raise your parameters like that. Makes me suspect that they were carbonate hardness generator tablets, like sodium bicarbonate (which are sometimes recommended as a suitable alternative to CO2 injection). Ironically though, a higher pH lowers CO2.
There are actually Boxes you submerge and dropt the tablets in. The CO2 that raises up in this Box is then kept in some kind of Topper so it can diffuse into the water over time. This might increase the effect of this tablets and I think that was what they tried to tell you on the packaging. I dont know if this helps a lot though.
Yeah I've seen those boxes! (Sera CO2 start) Those tabs seem to work much better indeed, but I can't get myself to place this big box inside my aquarium 😆
@@MJAquascaping Wouldnt put this into my tank either but this topper style reservoirs are also used with biological CO2 generators, as this seems to increase the amount of CO2 that actually diffuses into the water over time. This might be something that could be tested in some future videos on the no CO2 tank. This way we could compare if one of this systems might be a low budget alternative to pressurized CO2. Spoiler: I doubt it. I mean you already have a video on low budget bio CO2 and you have this tabs... why not give it a try with one of this toppers :) Keep up that good work and interesting videos!
Can you make a video about how you get your moss so healthy? Ive tried several things but it just wont go.. the plants are doing fine but the moss is just green brown..
Which mixture and diffusor are you using for your DIY-CO2-bottle on your 20L Cube? I am still using a Dennerle CO2 Micro Flipper with Bio-CO2 on my 30L tank and was already thinking of a diffusor upgrade, but i tried one from my father and the pressure wasn't enough. Enjoying your videos, keep it up.👍
I'm using the diffusers from Aquario, love them! The mixture is basically 250 gr sugar and 250 gr water. I heat that up and then add in 3 gelatin leaves. The entire recipe is here th-cam.com/video/OtpfltN15-8/w-d-xo.html
I'm guessing these tablets are basically Alka Seltzer (sodium bicarb + citric acid). So they probably do produce CO2 but probably not enough while also increasing hardness.
Few things to note here: They write CO₂ wrong. Co (with a little o) is Cobalt, a heavy metal which is completely different from carbon dioxide. Also they change how they write it throughout their text. Also they use a large 2 instead of a small one at the bottom, which I guess is acceptable, but for a company really embarassing. 2nd of all my guess is that it's a form of carbonate/bicarbonate, judging from the rate at which it dissolves most likely soddium or potassium bicarbonate. Which would increase pH as well as carbonate hardness. Bicarbonates and sometimes carbonates can be used by plants directly (e.g. elodea/egeria densa; myriophyllum heterophyllum), known as bicarbonate-assimilation, however that requires a lot of energy (compared to using carbon dioxide directly) and can't be used by all plants. So it's god damn stuipid to use those.
Thank you for releasing this. I have also tried them and didn't see any difference. If you did it would likely be a placebo effect and had to do with some other variable. I started using DIY CO2 recently with the baking soda and citric acid method. I have seen lots of improvement in the plants in that aquarium. That CO2 runs high pressure so I may be able to get away with hooking 2 tanks up to it. I have had issues with the liquid from the bottle getting into the lines going into the tank. Any advise for preventing that?
Thanks Mark, I'm going to try your DIY CO2 system when I re-do my 55 gallon tank 😊 I noticed you have a Chihiros light, I have one on my Waterbox Cube 20. What do you think of this light? I really love the quality of the light and slimline look on the tank.
LOL, I knew what your results were going to be but I had to watch anyways. It was entertaining if nothing else. Your starting to make me consider Co2 though, your Nano tanks look great. I keep humming and hawing about it but starting to think I should just go ahead and add Co2 to my tank. My issue with Co2 is monitoring how much your putting in, I hear the drop checkers are not accurate. I will have to research more. Good video, you put the Co2 tablet subject to bed lol.
drop checkers are accurate, they are simply delayed (up to a few hours, the higher the contact area, the faster the CO₂ can reach equilibrium). What you basically have in there is a mixture of pH indicators. As CO₂ from your tank water slowly makes its way into the drop checker, it forms carbonic acid, thus the pH in the drop checker is lowered, thus your pH indicators change color. This is directly correlated to how much CO₂ is in your tank.
@@MJAquascaping exactly this one. To try co2 tablet. I bought the chinese brand you showed. And I don't think it really works. Some particles of the tablet don't dissolve so there will always be white things floating around in the tank. Luckily, it just cost me USD1.5 for 1box, 36tablets.

Ja klopt! Ik moet nog even een afspraak maken, maar ik hoop deze maand nog langs te gaan.
This is a random question. Where did you find that Awesome display shelf?
I absolutely love it.

Thank You so much. They are beautiful! Now if only I could speak/read German?
Have a great week. And your tanks are absolutely #1.
And your knowledge you share is superb.

I will translate the site to English when I get home. Wonder if they ship to the U.S. and bet it's ^$!.
@@whydoyoucare ok I just wanted to say it is in dutch not german. The currency is Euros.
I mean you already have a video on low budget bio CO2 and you have this tabs... why not give it a try with one of this toppers :)
Keep up that good work and interesting videos!
It's a no go for me thx for sharing.
عالی بود دمت گرم داداش. thanks you for this video. 😍
Can you make a video about how you get your moss so healthy? Ive tried several things but it just wont go.. the plants are doing fine but the moss is just green brown..
What about Calcium Carbonate tablets?
amazing review on fake products. you always show best things legend. goldy
hi man, i love your videos! which is your light blue background? where can i buy it?
It's the simple sticky foil that's used for windows and stuff. Can find it in any hardware store 😊
Unique video idea and very informative. 💪
Sempet pengen beli tablet co2 tapi banyak yg nyaranin CO2 Racikan ragul/cisod
Super experience merci 👍
Just saw your post on instagram.and I am here
The most hensom aquarist from netherland
Thank for videos . From indonesian n have cc indonesia 👍👍👍
I'm guessing these tablets are basically Alka Seltzer (sodium bicarb + citric acid). So they probably do produce CO2 but probably not enough while also increasing hardness.
planning to buy that chinese brand tablet.. after seeing this video, might just use the DIY co2 once it arrives here.
Thanks for sharing experience.
How about liquid carbon?
Wow nice thanks for sharing. I try this soon.
Great video! i have one question, how do you turn off de DIY co2 system at night?
That's not possible 😊 so it runs 24/7 which isn't a problem, just make sure you have some surface agitation at night to provide oxygen
Thanks for sharing! Sorry no advise for your issue, I've never used the DIY citric acid and baking soda setup apart from the SS reactor
I'm gonna try It with the Bayer pills, let's,go ! 🤣. Thanks man ))
Mark, how about the Ista Disposable CO2 Can? Have you ever tried it? It seams like it could be a good low budget alternative
Yep this works 😊
Yes I have tried sometime ago SERA tablets system and it works but not as CO2 injection.
Thanks Mark, I'm going to try your DIY CO2 system when I re-do my 55 gallon tank 😊
I noticed you have a Chihiros light, I have one on my Waterbox Cube 20. What do you think of this light? I really love the quality of the light and slimline look on the tank.
Cool! good luck with that! Yeah I love the Chihiros lights!
Go for it! You will not regret it 😊 The second drop checker that I added in the video always work just fine for me.
drop checkers are accurate, they are simply delayed (up to a few hours, the higher the contact area, the faster the CO₂ can reach equilibrium).
Was this my request from your previous co2 vs no co2 planted tank. Thanks a lot! If not, still thanks!😅
I'm not sure 😆 what was your request?
@@MJAquascaping exactly this one. To try co2 tablet. I bought the chinese brand you showed. And I don't think it really works. Some particles of the tablet don't dissolve so there will always be white things floating around in the tank. Luckily, it just cost me USD1.5 for 1box, 36tablets.
nice vid but you you do it that long? you could show everything in like 10-12 mins
