Outright Winner of the RAC Rally 1956. These are extremely under-rated and reliable cars. Please keep it looking as original as possible. I have driven one as a Classic for 40 years and it is on the road always. See you at the Standard shows in 2025
@@idriveaclassic Hi Steph, I have a good bootlid, but it will be a different colour, that I will donate to your cause. How does that rate in the originality stakes
That is a great idea to switch to the LED bulbs for the sidelights. It is easy to undo, as there is no modification to the car at all. The added safety is well worth the tiny compromise in originality. Tyres and brakes are also places to concentrate on safe operation. Even the most stringent Concours D'Elegance does not take off points for safety modifications on driver class cars.
You don’t get much for under £1000 these days but a 70 year old Standard 10 is definitely worth £1k! A beautiful and original car that looks like it has been loved all these years and if it could talk could probably tell many a happy tale!
Great little Standard , Steph, a very good buy ,love the original colour over the more common black , thank you for being such a brilliant ambassador for rallying the sense and enjoyment of running a classic car .
Thank you. If I can get more people into classics (my life goal) then I’ll know I’ve been a success. It’s not about money for me, it’s keeping the hobby alive
My Grandfather bought one new in 1955 HVL 418 std 10 I have photo of use both stood with it I was five years old He sold it in 1960 for £300 to a garage 1 mile away from where he lived Thanks for a great video❤❤😮
Well done Steph, your passion and excitement for your new car is clear to see. I’m amazed at the condition considering its age. Very pretty colour and nice upholstery colour too 😀
Good on you Steph. I say to other's I know that are into old cars that if they aren't prepared for a bit of risk and unpredictability, then owning an old car isn't for them. It's the journey that makes it such an interesting hobby.
Wow. She looks absolutely fabulous. Gorgeous. I love it. She is definitely completely practical for everyday motoring. Back in the 90s I used a 1930s car as my main car (1936 Austin 7 Ruby). I even went on holiday to Brittany in France with no problems. I remember my uncle having a Standard 10 back in the 60s. I was in the car when he was on holiday in Devon. The bonnet opened, flew upwards, broke its hinges and landed on the road behind us. Thankfully the lorry that was following managed to stop without hitting it. We collected it and tied it in place, continued to the next town (Teignmouth) to the Standard dealer. They had new hinges available, and immediately helped to re-mount the bonnet, so although there was a few scratches, the car was still good for continuing their holiday. I still have my Austin Ruby, but she is now demoted to second car status. I now have a "modern" as my main car, she is only 40 years old (1983 Ford Escort Mk 3, 1.1 L). I went in her on a 2,500 mile holiday to the French Alps in May this year. I am excited for you and your lovely Standard. Great choice!
Seph, I have my grandparents Austin A90 here in Australia. I was two and a half when it came brand new. It is a similar colour. It will still happily cruise at 70 mph and is very comfortable. Back in the nineties my wife use to drive it to work. I am in a club, most of its use these days is for club activities.
Well done Steph, what a great little car you've got yourself. I so love your passion and plans for it's future. It obviously deserves it and it was all meant to be..

Our next door neighbour in Bangalore in the sixties had one. He was chauffeured to work during the week (I remember the Chauffeur had a grey suit with a matching cap) but it also was used on weekends to take us kids out of the city for tea or coffee at local plantations. These British cars were mostly owned by ex civil servants who had retired. They were a nice change from endless Ambassadors.

Hi Steph, she says she doesn’t remember what colour it is but that the car looks fantastic and brings back memories. The factory lent her a Standard 10 to pass her test in so that she could ferry cars around for the manager of Advertising. She’s 91 now and still drives.😊

Hi Steph. Thank you for buying a Standard 10. WXJ 9 was my first car in 1969 and despite front floor pan corrosion and the need to rob bits from my friend John's two Eights we had a wonderful year or two of driving to folk clubs and festivals and a holiday in Cornwall (learning how to double declutch) plus having my friend Bud sweat a plumber's joint to the radiator hose joint in the middle of a cold and snowy Winter. I learnt a lot thanks to friends' help. I also discovered the 'reserve' fuel tank button on the rear passenger set bulkhead! My 10 cost me £20 then and the Insurance was £40........enjoy your new car!
Nice little car, I look forward to seeing what you do with her, hope you have lots of happy motoring in her, and your such a natural in front of the camera!
I’ve just bought my first classic (A heavily modified ‘68 Beetle). I also pretty much bought it blind and drove it home over 200 miles from the top of Manchester down to London. Hello Steph, Great little car.. once you get it sorted it will be very reliable, My little story. My parents bought a 10 new in Glasgow in 1957, in '61when I was about 6, with my brother of 3 we would start very early with the rear seat folded down to a bed. We drove all the way South to stay the night at Ringwood Hampshire. The next day the car was loaded into a Bristol Silver city airservice plane at Hurne airport, over the channel to land on grass at Deauville airport, spending 2 weeks in Normandy with the family. My dad had the AA 5 star touring package complete with a box of spares, free if returned unopened. We had the car till 1963, when we traded up to a Morris Oxford. Cordialement
Nice buy. My parents bought a 10 in 1956, ohv, 4 speed, electric wipers. Way ahead of Fords. I bought one in 1989, restored and occasionally used. These old cars make you realise how good post 1980's cars are. The old cars require much patience, especially in comfort, braking and power.
Perhaps, but, on the flip side, you dont need a computer or special tools to work on them..... No failing inspection because a $1500.00 sensor went bad and the red light wont go out on the dash... No pulling out the battery and air filter housing to change a headlight bulb, no plastic bumper falling off because you just barely tapped something.... I will give you the easier disc brakes, and radial tires.... cup holders, arm rests, heated seats, defroster, air conditioning...... Ok, ok, we'll call it a draw!!!!! 😂😂😂
Great buy Steph, definitely a pretty overall solid, original looking Standard and loving the idea of the project. I had a Standard 8 ( the poor cousin with no boot lid 😆) years ago when I was just 17 and all my friends were in Minis and Fiesta’s all of whom thought I was bonkers but you, your followers and I know, we were the cool ones 😎 Good luck and hope to see you at the NEC Nick
Well done Steph. So pleased you are doing this. I only drive a 1960 ford pop or a 1973 esxort I've had 30 years It can be done. Keep them standard! I say. Easy to sort. Can't wait to see how you do with it!
Glad to see another 10 owner, bought my 1955 10 after my Dad died in 2015, as an eight was his first car and he always raved about it, couldn't find an eight at the time so went for the 'big block 10' I can see why he liked it so much now, and with 20 mph and ULEZ zones they make so much sense now. Good luck using it as a daily, think you might struggle up the hills in Yorkshire. I totally agree these cars need more coverage and to be saved and appreciated by more youngsters like yourself. Will be following this with great interest
Ah absolutely brilliant! This has made my day. I'm so excited for you, that's an absolute bargain. Your excitement is infectious. Years ago I had a Standard 10 that someone had put a Marina engine into but ever since I have hankered after an original but never found the right one. Ed seems a lovely chap who is full of positivity so the car is in good hands. I look forward to future videos.
Hi Steph, I have a vivid memory of my dear next door neighbours taking out their Standard 8 out of their garage for a drive. It was in the 1960s and I think I fell in love with the car. The engine sound, the design and the little trafficator indicating that they were turning right. Such a delightful memory for me. My parents had a Vauxhall Viva but to me the Standard had charm and character. I enjoy your channel, and I hope you enjoy your new Standard 10!
My earliest car memory was of a standard. In 1962 my dad had a 1949 standard flying 8, the previous “sit up and beg” shape. Either it had a wooden floor or the floor was rotten in the front passenger well. I was in the back as a 1 year old and dad was driving along in the rain. He drove through a deep pool of water which was, because of the speed of the car, forced up through the hole in the floor, it went straight over mums head and absolutely drenched me lying on the back seat. Oh how we laughed….not. A. Year or so after that he sold it for £10 and put that money, plus another £20 and bought a standard vanguard 1 saloon. I thought he was really cool as there were pictures of an identical car all over the press what I didn’t realise was that the car in the photos had been used in the great train robbery lol. Happy Standard memories
What a lovely car Steph. Unusual to see a car of this age not in black. My Dad actually learnt to drive on a blacl Standard 10 way back in 1960 when he was 33 years old. His first car was a black Austin A35 followed by a light blue Vauxhall Victor with a bench seat and column gear change. Your blue Standard Super 10 looks like it has the same blue paint as the Standard Vanguard in one of the Bangers and Cash episodes. Love the Channel BTW.
Wow, what a gorgeous little Standard bargain, so pleased to see you championing these underrated cars. Standards were great cars, and this looks like a real gem. Awesome to hear that you are going to be using it everyday too, I can feel your excitement! I can't wait to see more of this sweet little car on your channel Steph! All best wishes from West Coast Canada.
Awesome Steph! Really looking forward to seeing your next update. You were the one that inspired me to buy a Moggy after watching your channel for around a couple of years before I purchased my 63 4 door. 😊
Fabulous car! Mine was a a Super 10 in phantom grey PWO 48. I swapped the wheels for the higher rated van wheels, The car cornered so well cracks appeared on the originals! Will follow this project with interest.
What a lovely car looks in amazing original condition, I remember the basic version where it didn’t have an opening boot , it was accessed by tilting the back seat forward .
I had one for driving round the farm when I was 14 it was super tough the only problem i had the spring broke that holds the pin that holds the gear stick in place so you could hit a bump and the gear stick would jump out. I wish you all the best with it mine was super reliable in extremly harsh conditions and driven by lots of school kids.
Well done Steph that has the makings of a really good usable classic One thing to watch out for with these. Crank end float ! If you have any difficulty in getting it into gear check to make certain that the crank is not moving back and forth in the main bearings.
I used to get a lift to school in a similar car in the mid 60's. It must have been an early Standard 8 though as there was no boot lid, access to the boot was by folding one of the split rear seats down. Thanks for keeping these old cars on the road 👍
Lovely purchase Steph. This has all the potential for a great (and very fitting) daily driver. I always used my classics as daily’s, it is what they were made for in the end.
What an absolute bargain Steph such great condition for its age . Lovely colour and so original. I'm sure you and the team will have the car sorted in no time . Enjoy your videos Steph keep them coming .
Well done on your bargain buy ,my dads first car was a standard back in 1967 and he loved it even though it was a cheap banger !thank you for being honest and humble
I think it,s great what you have achieved here , a friend gave me a car because he new I,d always wanted that particular type , but there was a catch . Keeping classics on the road is as valuable a resource as restoring the next Spitfire !
Looks like a really solid little car mostly, I can smell the interior from here. Amazing that these have survived this long, I thought they all died in the 80s. Good work Steph, and driving it every day? Brave!
Love it! And I'm looking forward to seeing it at the NEC. I was worrying about potentially dailying my 90's Ka this morning, and seeing that you plan to daily the Standard has put that into perspective ! With the right maintenance and preventative maintenance anything is possible.
Brilliant Steph. Like you I had not considered Standard cars in general, but particularly the 8 and 10. Over the last year of so I find I really like these little pieces of automobile excellence. Looking forward to following your progress. Bring it on!
What an absolute bargain. I never really new about Standard until All Things Alex had one on his channel earlier this year, they look like great cars and I would love to own one.I hope you have many happy miles together.
Well bought Steph. Looks a good solid car - and you've got the posh one with a boot and even a passenger sun visor! My grandparents had one exactly the same colour in the early 60s when I was about 6!!!! 😂
That's a 'Wow' from me! So good for it's age - for anything over 20 years old really! And that colour is gorgeous. Love your plans for keeping it close to original - so special! Congrats from way Down Unda!
Absolutely love this vid, your passion and excitement really comes across ❤ Such a cool little car, I do love how you make the classic car scene accessible for everyone ❤
What a wonderful choice Steph. My granddad had a Standard 10 before he had his Triumph Herald. According to my dad he bought the Standard 10 instead of the Standard 8 as the 10 had a boot lid and the 8 didn’t. He’d already replaced it with his Triumph Herald when I was born. I’ve always loved them as they have that ‘50s cheekiness to them. I can’t wait to see it at the NEC show. I’ll be following this with interest.
I remember many years ago my neighbors son had a Standard 8 and I always thought it was funny it not having a boot lid you had to pull the rear seat back forward and push stuff in that way all very odd but it worked he had the car for several years.
Oh I absolutely love this, the Standard 8/10 are such adorable cars they seem to have a personality don't they? Well done on your purchase. Really looking forward to seeing the progress of getting her roadworthy.
I love the Standard 10 but rot is their biggest enemy, that is in superb condition for a totally unrestored one. Good for you for keeping it original, one modernisation I would make though is electronic ignition.
Congrats on the new ride! Not surprised given that you've developed a soft spot for Standards. Hope it serves you well and at least you've got Kevin, your workmates, the owners club and others to assist you with it.
Delightful to see these less common classic cars getting some love! Your happiness with your new purchase is infectious! 😁 My father's first car (and the first car I can remember travelling in) was a Standard 10 which he ran between 1957 and 1963, repping in southern England for J Bibby and Sons Ltd. Fawn brown in colour, I think - but I could be wrong. The family used it for longer runs too, such as a trip between East Kent and Chester, using the Woolwich ferry as part of the South and North Circular route round London and on to the (then new) M1, which only went as far as Rugby in those days, then by the trunk roads like the A5. The trip took about 10 hours!
Oh Steph, what a GREAT buy... welcome to Standard ownership and the Standard club! I've been an overseas member for 20 odd years. SO looking forward to seeing the progress on her....
@idriveaclassic I got excited and commented before getting to then end... I have those dual led globes for my Morris Minor side lights... I HATE the awful aftermarket indicators people stick on. The dual LED globes are a great solution! Two Standard videos in one day... definitely feeling guilty now...😬

It looks gorgeous. Even if it needs a fair bit of work and a bit of ££s, it will be a joyous project. Great Video content ongoing..
I don’t even think it needs that much
Looking great !! Cars not bad too!!
The heater in newer cars is deffo preferable but I love the old styling.
Nice one, Steph! My dad had a Standard 10, drove us all to Rhyl from Glasgow on holiday many years ago. A great wee car, enjoy it!
That’s amazing! What an adventure
Great buy Steph, definitely a pretty overall solid, original looking Standard and loving the idea of the project. I had a Standard 8 ( the poor cousin with no boot lid 😆) years ago when I was just 17 and all my friends were in Minis and Fiesta’s all of whom thought I was bonkers but you, your followers and I know, we were the cool ones 😎
Good luck and hope to see you at the NEC
Nick
I hope to see ya there!
Well done Steph. So pleased you are doing this. I only drive a 1960 ford pop or a 1973 esxort I've had 30 years It can be done. Keep them standard! I say. Easy to sort. Can't wait to see how you do with it!
Right on!
Nice looking standard, I remember hundreds of these running around back when I was young
Glad to see another 10 owner, bought my 1955 10 after my Dad died in 2015, as an eight was his first car and he always raved about it, couldn't find an eight at the time so went for the 'big block 10'
I can see why he liked it so much now, and with 20 mph and ULEZ zones they make so much sense now. Good luck using it as a daily, think you might struggle up the hills in Yorkshire. I totally agree these cars need more coverage and to be saved and appreciated by more youngsters like yourself. Will be following this with great interest
I love that you got your little 10 ❤️
Ah absolutely brilliant!
Gosh bet that was quick!
Thank you. I love that memory, Gladys. Thank you for sharing xx
From the perspective of a classic bike owner I do hope we all don't get stuffed by the car (and bike ) haters in the government.
We won’t. I cover this question in yesterday video
I didn’t know that’s what was used in the great train robbery!!!!
@@idriveaclassic one of the vehicles as far as I’m aware…I was only 2 1/2 at the time. Lol.
Steph, this warms my heart. You are one of the best people to look after this lovely car. Congratulations on this great find!
Wow, thank you! That’s really sweet of you to say x
I love your enthusiasm and positive attitude, and will be watching your progress with interest.
Thank you ❤️❤️
Wow, what a gorgeous little Standard bargain, so pleased to see you championing these underrated cars. Standards were great cars, and this looks like a real gem. Awesome to hear that you are going to be using it everyday too, I can feel your excitement! I can't wait to see more of this sweet little car on your channel Steph! All best wishes from West Coast Canada.
Glad you enjoyed it! Update coming later this week x
Looking forward to coming on this exciting journey with you Steph! It looks amazing, well done.
Thank you so much xx
Well almost a mayflower...what a great video, . Should be on Wikipedia under , the enthusiasm every time a car addict buys a new project, love it !
Aw thanks ❤️❤️
Such enthusiasm, I was getting excited for Steph just watching and listening to her talking about the Standard!
Thanks for sharing! I love a classic story
Spot on Steph.. The little Standard is in safe hands with you and you will nurse it back to full health.
Thank you lovely xx
What a lovely car looks in amazing original condition, I remember the basic version where it didn’t have an opening boot , it was accessed by tilting the back seat forward .
It was indeed
I had one for driving round the farm when I was 14 it was super tough the only problem i had the spring broke that holds the pin that holds the gear stick in place so you could hit a bump and the gear stick would jump out. I wish you all the best with it mine was super reliable in extremly harsh conditions and driven by lots of school kids.
Fantastic buy Steph ! What a great little car ! Plus , you are looking great 👍
Thanks so much! 😊
Well done Steph that has the makings of a really good usable classic
One thing to watch out for with these.
Crank end float !
If you have any difficulty in getting it into gear check to make certain that the crank is not moving back and forth in the main bearings.
This is actually enormously helpful advice. Thank you xx
I used to get a lift to school in a similar car in the mid 60's. It must have been an early Standard 8 though as there was no boot lid, access to the boot was by folding one of the split rear seats down. Thanks for keeping these old cars on the road 👍
My pleasure! Thanks for watching x
What a bargain! Simple basic engineering,so very little to go wrong -looking forward to seeing more of this great little motor😊
More to come!
Lovely purchase Steph. This has all the potential for a great (and very fitting) daily driver. I always used my classics as daily’s, it is what they were made for in the end.
Fingers crossed!
What an absolute bargain Steph such great condition for its age . Lovely colour and so original. I'm sure you and the team will have the car sorted in no time . Enjoy your videos Steph keep them coming .
Fingers crossed! And thank you x
Well done on your bargain buy ,my dads first car was a standard back in 1967 and he loved it even though it was a cheap banger !thank you for being honest and humble
"Sorry it's a bit different to usual!" Don't apologise, Steph! It's brilliant! Thank you for sharing the joyfulness.
Best wishes from George
Thanks so much! 😊
I think it,s great what you have achieved here , a friend gave me a car because he new I,d always wanted that particular type , but there was a catch . Keeping classics on the road is as valuable a resource as restoring the next Spitfire !
Well said!
Looks like a really solid little car mostly, I can smell the interior from here. Amazing that these have survived this long, I thought they all died in the 80s. Good work Steph, and driving it every day? Brave!
Why not. Only thing stopping me is no petrol in the tank 😎😎
As an American, I love those Standards! Cute little honest cars! Yay for you Steph!!!
Thank you lovely x
@@49commander that'll be a Triumph 10 over there :)
Love it! And I'm looking forward to seeing it at the NEC. I was worrying about potentially dailying my 90's Ka this morning, and seeing that you plan to daily the Standard has put that into perspective ! With the right maintenance and preventative maintenance anything is possible.
You’re here for a good (but short) time. Enjoy the car ❤️
Brilliant Steph. Like you I had not considered Standard cars in general, but particularly the 8 and 10. Over the last year of so I find I really like these little pieces of automobile excellence. Looking forward to following your progress. Bring it on!
The more we look after the smaller names on the scene, the richer the community becomes in my opinion x
@@idriveaclassic well said.
Wow, what a find. Looks really solid. It's going to have a life from now on, so enjoy the ride and congratulations .
Thank you!
What an absolute bargain. I never really new about Standard until All Things Alex had one on his channel earlier this year, they look like great cars and I would love to own one.I hope you have many happy miles together.
Couldn't agree more!
Well bought Steph. Looks a good solid car - and you've got the posh one with a boot and even a passenger sun visor! My grandparents had one exactly the same colour in the early 60s when I was about 6!!!! 😂
Not to brag, but I’ve got a heater too.
@@idriveaclassic you show off! 😂
That's a 'Wow' from me! So good for it's age - for anything over 20 years old really! And that colour is gorgeous. Love your plans for keeping it close to original - so special! Congrats from way Down Unda!
PS: My 'unpopular' fetish is the Consul 315 Classic. But very happy with my 1980s Civic AH hatch.
Oh thank you!
Absolutely love this vid, your passion and excitement really comes across ❤ Such a cool little car, I do love how you make the classic car scene accessible for everyone ❤
Thank you! I do strongly believe it is. Sometimes you’ve just got to get a slightly different classic to suit your budget.
The car has one tire of the brand Dębica, from Poland. Greetings from Poland. Thanks to your channel I am learning about British motoring.
What an absolute bargain! Looks a lovely little car. Good idea about upgrading the sidelights/indicators too
Totally agree!
Lovely car Steph. I'm in and can't wait to watch the work being done on her. Had my eye on one myself as a possible classic.
I think you should do it
What a wonderful choice Steph.
Exactly what put me off the 8 too!
I remember many years ago my neighbors son had a Standard 8 and I always thought it was funny it not having a boot lid you had to pull the rear seat back forward and push stuff in that way all very odd but it worked he had the car for several years.
What a cool little car Steph. Looking forward to the videos still to come on the Standard
Oh I absolutely love this, the Standard 8/10 are such adorable cars they seem to have a personality don't they? Well done on your purchase. Really looking forward to seeing the progress of getting her roadworthy.
You are so kind thank you xx
I like the Lucas 564 motorcycle tail light being used as a number plate light.
Hahahah it’s actually a ‘does everything’ light it would seem.
Another great video. What a fantastic bargain. I look forward to seeing the restoration and further adventures of it.
Thank you! X
I love the Standard 10 but rot is their biggest enemy, that is in superb condition for a totally unrestored one. Good for you for keeping it original, one modernisation I would make though is electronic ignition.
I’m so lucky! Yeah I reckon I’ll probably flip over to Luminition.
@@idriveaclassic Good choice.
@@idriveaclassic The Club sells an Electronic kit or a replacement points distributor, as you want to keep it original.......
Congrats on the new ride! Not surprised given that you've developed a soft spot for Standards. Hope it serves you well and at least you've got Kevin, your workmates, the owners club and others to assist you with it.
Much appreciated!
Love the color! Love its condition! And I can’t wait for regular video updates on this gem of a car! Great pick! 🤩
Thank you x
Delightful to see these less common classic cars getting some love! Your happiness with your new purchase is infectious! 😁
My father's first car (and the first car I can remember travelling in) was a Standard 10 which he ran between 1957 and 1963, repping in southern England for J Bibby and Sons Ltd.
Wow that’s some mileage!
Really great car Steph , and definitely a bargain . Very best of luck getting her sorted , and back on the road !
That's the plan! Thank you!
These cars are so underrated, and what a great buy. This looks like a lovely original looking car which should be a pleasure to own and work on.
Oh Steph, what a GREAT buy... welcome to Standard ownership and the Standard club! I've been an overseas member for 20 odd years. SO looking forward to seeing the progress on her....
Ahh thanks Chris!!! I did want to mention it when you commented on my pre war video 😉
@idriveaclassic I got excited and commented before getting to then end... I have those dual led globes for my Morris Minor side lights... I HATE the awful aftermarket indicators people stick on. The dual LED globes are a great solution! Two Standard videos in one day... definitely feeling guilty now...😬
@chriscansdale6389 haha we’ve got to spoil you lovely lot occasionally x
So pleased for you and love the colour too. What a lovely new car adventure, look foward to your next vids on this lovely car😊
Thanks so much! 😊
You really are a fantastic advocate for the Classic car world and its sooo important to keep these wonderful cars going and enjoyed for generations to come 😊
Standard 10, my dads first car, HRA518 white, wasn't too keen at the time but would love it now 😄
