This video did indeed answer my questions about the transmitter power changes overnight and then some!!!!
This series really shows the hard work, time and genuine knowledge that it takes to put (and keep) the station on the air.
The strange mix of old, new and heavily customised equipment which the station uses in order to sound the way that it does makes a great case for not replacing everything every 2 years as is the case with most consumer electronics… oh no my phone is old…. Mixer console for the 1980’s … think on kids!!!!!

"quality is outstanding" well it can get better as I have been working on a new generation of AM stereo technology, with build in noise reduction, high performance QAM transmitter and also is able to provide Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) information. I am currently calling it the C-QuAMv2 system, the plan is test this system out on the air over the next few years. I'm listening through my computers 7.1 channel monitors and the sound surrounds me. Unlike F.M. Stereo which is thin and airy, the WION A.M. Stereo sound is fat and full. I have saved this web address to my computer so I can bring it up anytime.

I am a former broadcaster in Eastern North Carolina. My fiancee and I are big fans of WION - The Biggest Little Radio Stations In America. We listen to WION very, very often online. What an awesome mix of music. It's "Classic Hits", but not confined to the same 300-400 songs of most larger market FM Classic Hits stations. They play the familiar hits, but also the hit songs that may not have made the top 10. I always hear music I haven't heard in years! They also serve their local communities as all local radio should. The station's over-the-air AM Stereo signal feeds their audio stream, which sounds great.
To the WION crew: Many moons ago, we occasionally used the Ms. Miller version of "Happy Birthday" for a birthday segment on our morning show on WCBT-AM 1230 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. What a hoot it was to hear that voice (different song) again! Keep up the great work! We do love the station and wish you continued growth and success.

You're a lucky Dawg!! I have a great not for profit FM in WJMJ that has what seems to be great FM engineering and signal. On the AM I haven't found any AM Stereo, but am blessed with so many stations I can pick up. We have a local WATR that is old school and still has a full morning and mid-day staff and on-air talent as well as weekend morning and Sunday evening oldies shows. I wish they could take the stereo challenge. I see it's more than just one stop in the signal chain.

When I was a student at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo CA back in the early 1980’s, I was a DJ on the school radio station, KCPR, 91.3 FM. At that time we had an analog mixer board similar to the one at station in this video, with the rotary pots and toggle switches. There was no computerization back then, so we played vinyl LPs and 45’s. We had three Technics SP-10’s that we had to keep cued up at all times, a cart deck and microphone. The station was 2,000 watts back then. Today, the station has relocated to another area of the graphic arts building, and is now state of the art, and they also broadcast over the internet. Those were fun times!

Hi Shango. Love the video. Always loved geeking out on radio transmissions. I found a 100 mw am c quam transmitter on ebay. It is a kit build. Can't wait to get up and running. I remember listening to am stereo back in the 80's in a old GM car. Great stereo separation. Been listing to WION on the interwebs. Thanks again for sharing. Take care. 🙂

Fantastic documentary & thanks so much Shango & WION for sharing it with us all.
That engineer is also a wealth of awesome knowledge & really love his passion & the passion of all the other WION station crew & the great sound reflects their excellence.
The AM stereo image is so unique & remember Australia also adopting same but it was short lived when many AM stations started simulcasting on FM, many eventually moving over with only a handful left on AM broadcast.
Wow, the modern DJ console tricks they used these days & a far cry from doing Friday night community radio with my brother back in the day around late 1980s (we had no on-air or caller "dump buttons") as we had to manually cue the carts for the station jingles & play a lot of music off CDs, plus fill out the running sheet for APRA (like RIAA song licencing) although being Friday night graveyard, they allowed us to play almost anything we wanted including Greek, Spanish, Serbian, Italian, Arabic, Pop Rai/Algerian, French.
Crazy fun times for sure, helping to celebrate listeners birthdays, happiness & sorrows but the "famous" part & being recognised at record shops & out in public (they knew my voice haha) put me off.
Pity we can't listen to the station from Australia directly from their website, but it seems to be available on some apps.
Still listen to many AM stations including the Greek one which took over the old 3XY AM frequency as the English rock station had vacated to become 3EON FM & later became MMM Austereo network & meeting so many station engineers & on-air talent as a kid & later on which helped also inspire me to get into electronics & the tech industry

I've known of WION for a long time. I left a comment for Mr Carlyle about 10 years ago on his station's website. It's still there on page 1.
I've had discussions with Greg about AM Stereo. He has been to a lot of places helping broadcasters with their C-QUAM setup. The guy is super knowledgeable.
I didn't know that Salem was running Town Hall News, but I wasn't looking either. Salem's news offerings aren't terrible. Several stations here that carried Salem's news product now use Town Hall. Probably doesn't cost nearly as much as CBS which I believe WION used to carry long ago. Salem owns three radio stations here as 'The Fish' and they have a good product and competes with EMF's K-Love and their one full market signal well.
As an aside, Nashville is overrun with CCM stations and likely because a lot of CCM is produced here. Salem is the only for-profit outfit, though. EMF and Hope Media (Way FM) are non-profit.
The popularity of WION's stream using the output of the receiver has gotten the attention of others who are doing the same thing. WRDN is doing the same. For a while, WIRY was, but it seems they may not be broadcasting in stereo at all.
Nashville's biggest AM Stereo proponent, William O Barry, died nearly 10 years ago. Since then, all but one of the AM stereo stations he put on are mono. The sole survivor in the market still broadcasts a stereo pilot, but the audio is mono and the audio shifts to the left channel. The right is noise.
Shango, I appreciate the effort you put into this.

"Cost" had nothing to do with the decision to change to Townhall news by Salem. the fact is CBS' execution of basic functions SUCKED. Timing, outcues, dead air in the midst of 'casts. We informed them during the damnpanic that they were not keeping their standards up and wanted OUT of the contract. They let us out and we had already negotiated a good barter deal with Townhall. CBS became an AWFUL examle of broadcasting basics, and we would not stand for how they made WION look so bad. Simple as that!

@@RadioAnnouncer While I have your eyes, let me thank you and all of the staff at WION for helping us see your facility. To say that you worked wonders is an understatement.
At our station, we used AP news. While their product was good, we still had to do some work. The new GM came in and dropped it. We had to pay for it and the budget was chopped. We just did a massive upgrade to the studios with all AES AoIP, new consoles, new computers, Wide Orbit and a lot of other stuff. No more money, so bye news department. The news room is a podcasting studio now.
A couple of stations I work with now produce their own news product. It's updated twice a day.

    • @KC4RAE
      @KC4RAE ปีที่แล้ว

@@donbest5024 I was told the current equipment wasn't able to do Stereo. The C-QUAM is/was there all this time, but there's no place for it. WSM is one of the lowest billers in the market considering its somewhat large signal. They probably get more of an audience with their stream.
