    I got to drive a new 70 428 cj Cougar Eliminator 4 speed back in October of 69. I had the car for a couple of hours and ran through a full tank of gas or more. I was very impressed. The engine response was perfect for a street racer with lots of low end torque but still making power up to 5500 rpm or so. Handling was reasonable for the era. One thing about this Cougar. It had just F (or G)70 Polyglas tires as I recall but the car had very good traction. With a normal to brisk roll out, then flooring it in first at about 20 mph, you'd get some wheelspin but then it would just dig in. Perhaps the Cougar had better weight distribution than the Mach 1. Axle ratio in the Eliminator was 3.50, no ram-air, Competition Yellow with Houndstooth interior. Hope that cars lives on somewhere.

    Amazing how the tire technology didn't keep up with these torque monsters! Instead of looking toward the Jetsons we got the Flintstones instead.

    If only low profile sports tires were invented then it would really hug the turns.

    My father had one of these cars it was white I know this back in his day he took on a 440 six pack that the man capped kept agitating my father how he was going to blow his Mustang away they want on John Deere Road Dubuque Iowa 1st 2nd gear side by side 3rd gear. 440 six pack was left in the dust and the man turned off I never paid my father the money $10 bet lot of money in 69

      Yeah...No. 440 six packs were a lot faster than a 428 Mustang. Your Dad was pulling your leg. Or the other car Wasn't a 440 sixpack. Even a stock 440 4 bbl is faster than a 428.

    I put the 69 Mach 1 SCJ through about everything . Very complicated car at it's extremes . Not much for handling but there were tricks ,and the same with getting it to hook . Crushing the pan was impossible without adding a bash plate . The Boss had far less issues

    Corvair and Avanti were always there for the true rally driver., Ford built Mustang as a revenue builder. Handling was not needed for those who respond to hype.

    • @realmaindrianpace
      @realmaindrianpace 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Corvair was tail happy for obvious reasons, reasonable handling but snap oversteer and difficult to recover if things got rowdy. Like a 911, unforgiving. Avanti? You must be a fan of those, which is fine but it was a fiberglass body on a Lark chassis, and handling was nothing special. To compare it to a big block Mach 1 on skinny F-70 14 tires in handling is apples and oranges. Ford did make Mustangs that handled, the Boss 302 had a much better weight distribution, G-60-15 tires, and an upgraded suspension which made it handle as well as any pony car of the day. You could also order the suspension and brakes on a 351 Mach 1, and that handled pretty well too.
