This video healed me, for real. I have a 9 to 5 job as a pattern drafter, but the work environment, control-freak managers and lack of creativity are so stressful and demotivating, it's starting to make me hate my job. I am seriously thinking of building my own business in upcycling, but I'm so scared. Thank you so much for your tips, I took careful notes of everything you said. 🙏 Wish you the best in your business ❣
Fear is the most contributing factor as to why most of us don’t take the leap for these kind of things, but once you do, it’s worth it!! Life’s too short, if you never try, you will never know - wishing you all the best!☺️✨
This was fascinating. As a long-time maker who once had her own physical shop, I have tried to understand and embrace social media to help create a virtual space to sell. I fail. I fear I'm much too old to incorporate and internalize all that is needed to "do" the social media thing. I adore your ability to present yourself and your information. It would be stellar if you end up with the time to go into a little more depth re: how to maneuver through the social media maze (esp for us older makers). Totally understand if your time never allows for this. You are a most refreshing young lady!!! Congrats on finding your path in life!
Thank you! Social media can be quite daunting at first, but I think it can be easy ti navigate with a bit of confidence! I’d love to go more in depth, I’ll take note for maybe a future video or written thing!☺️✨
My town, 50K population, a suburb of Akron Ohio, has a crafting consignment shop in the Community Center. My granddaughter (33), her daughter (13), and myself place items for sale there. Upcycled clothing, children's clothing, some with matching doll clothes, unique T-shirts, purses, totes quilts, furniture. My granddaughter films short "making it" videos that she can place on Facebook, Instagram, something else. After making multiple pieces, she notes sizes, materials, prices of each type and location and hours of the shop. It is working out rather well. We don't have to deal with collecting payments, shipping, unhappy online customers or people coming to our homes. Customers can see our multiple products, hands on, and shop other sellers booths, pay and take their new treasures home, immediately. Works well for small volume production.

Oh my goodness! How cute is that kitty bag ❤ Your clothing is really beautiful as well. I had some stuff I wanted to donate to charity. Instead I cut up the clothes and ended up sewing a really neat jacket. It was a really fun project and since then, made a cute purse. If people look around the house, you start to see treasures, like batting from an old futon, fabric from drapes, a table cloth, etc. Don’t know anything about social media, but can start sewing and creating for me. Really fun sewing journey so far. Thank you for inspiring us to create,
Thankyou so much for your very personal story and all the tips about how you started (and maintain) your upcycling business! ❤️ I think you are a fantastic inspiration! ❤️
Thanks for sharing your ideas and experience. So generous of you. I've recently retired and am loving working on all the sewing projects that have been waiting for me for years. So great to be in my happy place again. Not sure I will ever get to the stage of selling any of my work as family have made many requests! Love your colourful confident asthetic, you are an inspiration. Thanks so much.
Mucias gracias, this is what I totally needed to hear regarding the nervousness of going full time with my passion of sewing. I was also very young when my mama showed me how to make my own Barbie clothing with a sewing machine that was much like yours with only a few stitches at a time. But looking back now, slow is best when first learning something. I love your "quirkiness" which is bold and beautiful!!
Thanks for sharing your story, it's so relatable in so many ways. I was in a fashion school during covid and it just wasn't the ideal time and I just don't do well with traditional learning environments so upcycling was the best route for me. This video has energized me and made me feel like it's possible, thank you again from the U.S. well Massachusetts to be exact :)
Hello Scarlett. I loved your video not just for the information but just because you are a delightful person. I too love to sew and you've inspired me to be creative. Cheers!
Thanks so much for sharing your story! I recently starting doing commission work making historical clothing and fantasy costumes. I've been getting jobs through word-of-mouth so far, but preparing to launch some social media marketing soon. It's been a fun journey!
I clicked on this video for the title and the fact that you look just like a girl I went to school with and as soon as you started talking I was like oh that's not her 😂 ( I live in the US). But I'm so glad to have met a new internet friend . Thanks for the advise ❤!
Thank you for this video and encouragement. I have wanted to start my own small business for almost 10 years now, I even went to school for textiles. I also collect vintage textiles and patterns. I worked as a studio assistant for years for another maker. But I am still too terrified to fully commit to my own business. I have done a handful of craft shows as a vendor over the years but always felt disappointed. A big part of the fear is failure, but even more so social media scares me so much. I know how important it is for success, especially after working for someone else. I am so self-conscious about being seen, being judged for not being attractive, or not cool enough, or people making fun of what I create or having high expectations of what I do or how I act. And I'm so scared of the burnout I will probably get from things like customer service and social media interaction. I have lots of ideas and sewing experience, but the business side of things is overwhelming. I have all of the tools but am still holding myself back. It's so scary! You are so brave, honestly.
Aww noo it broke my heart a little ready this! You absolutely can do all of this, it really is your mind that’s holding you back. It can be daunting at first, and you will make mistakes, but once you get in the flow of it, you will do absolutely fine! I promise!💜
I've been sewing, drawing & painting since forever. I also made scrubs & theatre gowns in lockdown. About 200 plus. I make my own patterns for bags. Well- make them up as I go along. Also keep making dresses. I used to make children's dresses with painting & quilting on them. I SHOULD sell but can't be bothered with all the admin/Internet stuff!!!! Love your vid. Keep it up. xxx😊
200+?! That’s incredible!! The admin part isn’t too bad, I think the intial part of setting it all up is a bit daunting, but it gets easier after that!☺️✨
First time on your channel. Personally, I LOVE your “waffling” & what your business is about. Thx for sharing your journey. I wish you much success! I enjoyed your video very much. 🤩🙌
Love, love, love this. Thank you for your time and sharing your journey. I would dearly love to 'get out there' as you and others have noted, and perhaps it IS the fear of the unknown that is keeping me from just jumping into my dream of making quilts for a living. No can do--I live in the UK where quilting isn't as big a 'thing' as in the US and because quilts tend to be larger than your adorable scrappy book bag, folks can't just pack them in their suitcase and go home, and most folks don't want to shell out $500 or more for the end product (queen-sized simple overall meander design). If I sold them for any less, I'd have to cut back on quality of sewing or quality of fabric to get the volume needed for a paycheck. In the end, I've figured that I might barely cover cost of materials (fabric, batting, backing--none of which is cheap) and would practically give away my time to keep the cost of the quilt at what most people want to pay. I guess I need to get some help in figuring out how to get that niche market of folks who recognize well-made items and are willing to pay for them. I also work full-time in healthcare and have a mortgage. I'd be terrified of not making enough to keep the lights on while getting a business going. Can't make and sell quilts if I'm on the streets...Anyhoo, thanks again for this: I'll have to keep on trying!!! Many blessings to you!
My first thought was, is there any quilted, small accessories you could do to start with? Like bags, makeup bags, totes, wall art - things like that! Then once you get noticed as the quilting queen that you are, you can maybe get commissioned for bigger pieces?✨🪡 A lot of people start off my buying a cheaper item like a headband, then they gradually save up for more expensive pieces 🌸🌿
@@afrayed_upcycling yes I have started working in smaller things like baby sized quilts or lap quilts thst can be used as wall hanging. My plan is to try embroidered panels with quilting as well and see how that goes.
Hi Scarlett, I just found this video by accident and actually I am really happy that I did! Such a sympathic, young lady doing the things I love (sewing/upcycling) as a fulltime job - great fit. Ha ha. I'm the same as you. I think our background experiences are quite similar. And I am also from Kent! I am also a very impatient sewer. I have been prototyping a new t-shirt dress I'm making and I've been wearing it as I alter it until I am happy with the final result. It's the slowest project I've ever done! As I have got older my love of social media has massively dwindled. I loathe it now. Except for TH-cam which I have discovered I love so I've decided that's going to be my selling media of choice. So far so good. PS. I'm so jealous of your sewing space. I need more room and I so miss my pattern cutting table!
Ooo where abouts in Kent?! Aww I know, social media can be really overwhelming and all consuming 😅 good luck for your sewing journey! I’m sure you will smash it!
Thank you so much for posting this video! I'm currently at uni as a mature student doing fashion and textiles so the information you gave is like gold for me. Good luck with your business, I can see that you're going to be mega successful!!
Ohh thank you so much!🥹 hows the course?! I’ve always wondered if I could go back one day? I’ve always thought going to uni at 19 was too young, only now nearly 10 years later do I think I could be ready to go back!
@@afrayed_upcycling I’m a very mature student 😂. So my experience at university to begin with was overwhelming and I felt really out of my depth. But by the end of the first semester I settled in. I did the HND fashion and textiles at college, then went to university directly into second year. I think from what I see of your work and incredible designs you would sail through uni. Sustainability is a big thing so you’ve checked that box and then some. Plus your sewing skills and pattern making would be a huge advantage. Go for it!
Well I must admit, this was a GREAT video. You touched on a lot of the things you discussed in our email. I SEW appreciate it and ALL the transparency. Yes this definitely helped me. Its absolutely fabulous... and I love your technique of the scrapy quilting! I'm going to have to try that. I wish you much luck. and thanks for sharing.
Loved watching this video!! Love all the colourful elements in your room and loved hearing your story. I went to a 'prestigious' London art university and it was disappointing, what you said about being left to your own devices and feeling like not going anywhere rang true to me. You've done amazing and your attitude and talents will take you further than a degree any day. I actually made a Victoriam corset using a vintage 80s tea towel in my first year of uni. Wasn't popular with the tutors but it was my favourite thing I made in the whole three years haha! Have subscribed as love what you are doing! ❤
Wow. What beautiful tea towels you have. Here in Belgium and the Netherlands you only have a checked pattern or waffle fabric. Sometimes you can find tablecloths in thrift stores with such nice images on them, but that's about it. Unfortunately, they are often full of stains and you really have to see if you can save anything. I work a lot with men's blouses, jeans, tablecloths and old knitted sweaters to upcycle. Good luck with your own business.
Thank you! I do find it hard to find good vintage tea towels to be fair, I always have to look online rather than find them in shops! Andddd they’re so expensive nowadays!
Loved your video and your creations! Great info ...thank you so much for sharing. It's raining here in Sydney Australia at the moment and you definately brightened up my day with your creations...👍👍👍✨✨✨
Thanks for sharing your process and how you got to where you are. I found it all quite fascinating and informative. I’d love to know where you got your fabric tags from. TIA. Cheers from across the pond in FL😺

Fingers crossed this time next year I will have a full time business x

You have time to read? Very clever ideas
Thank you for being so generous with your experiences and wisdom! 💖
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
Thank you for inspiring us to create,
Thank you! 100% agree, my partner has to lock away the bed throws 😉 social media is easy once you get the hang of it!
Thankyou so much for your very personal story and all the tips about how you started (and maintain) your upcycling business! ❤️ I think you are a fantastic inspiration! ❤️
Ohh thank you so much, that’s so sweet!🥹💜
You are wonderful. Thank you for this advice and the bit about “just go for it” at the end ❤ love your bright hair too!
Thank you!🥹✨ i really do mean it when I say, go for it!😂
You’re a sweet person. Thank you for sharing your experience, your awesome workspace and letting us hangout while you created a cool bag! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!!
You are so inspiring! Thank you.
Oh stoppppp!🥹 Thank you for you lovely words!!
I'm finally starting this at 60 because I've wanted it for so long and I'm starting by taking some classes. Hoping for the best.
Aww fab! Never too late to start!🙌
Thank you so much!! 💜🌸
Love your vibe, yes you do waffle a little but that is part of the charm of being yourself, so carry on waffling girl! I’m also I Kent, Herne Bay. ❤😊
Hahah I love this comment 😂🙌 aww love Herne Bay - I’m from Orpington!✨
Mucias gracias, this is what I totally needed to hear regarding the nervousness of going full time with my passion of sewing. I was also very young when my mama showed me how to make my own Barbie clothing with a sewing machine that was much like yours with only a few stitches at a time. But looking back now, slow is best when first learning something. I love your "quirkiness" which is bold and beautiful!!
Oh it was the most nerve wrecking thing i’ve ever done! But so worth it!! Good luck with your journey ☺️
I love the kitty book scrappy bag
Thanks for sharing your story, it's so relatable in so many ways. I was in a fashion school during covid and it just wasn't the ideal time and I just don't do well with traditional learning environments so upcycling was the best route for me. This video has energized me and made me feel like it's possible, thank you again from the U.S. well Massachusetts to be exact :)
Aww I’m so glad this has helped!!🥹💜 best of luck for your upcycling journey, I’m sure you will smash it!
Love to see things reused to make something new, good on you, very inspiring. 😍😍😍
Thank you!!
Hi Scarlett, Thank you for sharing your story. I love your designs. Well done on taking the plunge with your small business. A new Canadian fan!
Hello! Always wanted to go to Canada! Thank you so much!🥹
Just found your channel. Really enjoyed learning about you and love your advice!❤
Ahh so glad to hear! Thank you!
Love the bag. Great video sending good crafty vibes from Katy from NZ 😊
Thanks so much! 😊 I’d love to visit New Zealand one day! It was on the travel itinerary before the pandemic 🙈
Hello Scarlett. I loved your video not just for the information but just because you are a delightful person. I too love to sew and you've inspired me to be creative. Cheers!
Thank you so much 😭 really appreciate the compliment 💜
I promise!💜
I love the bag and your hair! Both lovely! You've given some really good tips for those beginners who want to start their own thing. Thank you!
Thank you! Hopefully the advice is helpful! One day i’d love to do a workshop!
The admin part isn’t too bad, I think the intial part of setting it all up is a bit daunting, but it gets easier after that!☺️✨
Hello! Oh My Goodness!! I love that dress and bag! Just subscribed to your channel. Going back to watch other videos. Thank you!
Thanks for subbing!💜 hopefully you like the rest of my stuff, although I am relatively new to this!😂🙌
@@afrayed_upcycling You're doing great!!
First time on your channel.
Personally, I LOVE your “waffling” & what your business is about. Thx for sharing your journey. I wish you much success! I enjoyed your video very much. 🤩🙌
That’s so sweet of you to say, thank you 🥹✨
Love, love, love this.
Best of luck for you and your business! I really hope you go for it!🌸💜
@@afrayed_upcycling yes I have started working in smaller things like baby sized quilts or lap quilts thst can be used as wall hanging. My plan is to try embroidered panels with quilting as well and see how that goes.
Thank you for your words of wisdom. Enjoy your upcycling videos.
Thank you! Hope to post more soon!
Love the bag, great use of the tiny leftovers. Also love you keeping utcreal
Thank you! It’s a cool way to use those thread ends and overlocker bits!🙌
Hi Scarlett, I just found this video by accident and actually I am really happy that I did! Such a sympathic, young lady doing the things I love (sewing/upcycling) as a fulltime job - great fit. Will surely enjoy some of your other videos one after the other. Just wanted to say "hi", subscribe and sending the best wishes from Germany 😉 Regarrds Stephanie
Hello! Thank you so much for reaching out, i’m so happy you found me! Thank you!🥹💜✨
@@afrayed_upcycling North Kent, near Gravesend. :)
Great video! Thank you for sharing your story. 😊
Thank you!💜✨
Thank you so much for posting this video!
I will take notes and be brave!!! I am going to make a release schedule for social media and check out quick books. Looking forward to more a day in the life of Afrayed Upcycling…. Happy Sewing @rellsews
Aw thank you! Really glad to hear it’s helped in a way! I really do waffle so I’m hoping to get a more concise post together 😂

I only met you this morning and I’m so happy to learn more from you. Your work is superb and so quirky and useful. Well done girl.❤
Thank you so much!! Quirky is such a compliment honestly!🙌
Its absolutely fabulous... and I love your technique of the scrapy quilting! I'm going to have to try that. I wish you much luck. and thanks for sharing.
Lovely, both you and your creations! You made my morning!
Aww thank you! Glad to!
So glad your video came up on my feed. You are such a beautiful inspiration and I love your creative expression in your work.
Thank you so much!😭🌸
I listened to Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow on audio. It was great. Cute bag and thanks for the advice.
It is a great book, I really enjoyed it! Thank you!
Thank you so much!🥹 Ive heard soooo many stories of people feeling disappointed by the ‘big’ universities in London 🙈
Oh, you story-tell so well as you sew. Quirky and linen rock.
Really?! I feel like I really struggled here! I totally waffle on and get distracted 😂🙈
You are so welcome! And thank you!!🥹🌸
Great helpful video! Thanks babe! Wishing you every success!🥰🌅🎉🤩
No worries!✨
Thanks for sharing your process and how you got to where you are. I found it all quite fascinating and informative. I love upcycling and only just really started using more used clothes instead of new fabric purchases. Working at the charity shop must have been so awesome for getting supplies. I’d love to know where you got your fabric tags from. TIA. Cheers from across the pond in FL😺
Thank you so much! Upcycling is just the best! I got the little printed tags from Contrado ☺️
