  • Trying to fix bad range on your DJI Mini 3 pro or any other drone? You may have looked at range extenders! but with huge questions over if they work or not in this I show you what settings you need to change to use them properly then do a flight test with the RC-N1 controller and some Yagi antennas to finally get the truth if they work or not.
    Check out the yagi antennas tested in this video here : amzn.to/45ddu0k

    Firstly, im an advanced amateur radio licensed operator….. i build and have built many yagi antennas for various bands here in Australia. You really need to understand antenna theory to grasp exactly what is going on. Antennas are tuned lengths for specific frequencies, outside its tuned freq it fails to operate efficiently….. so as you go up in the band (higher frequencies) you’ll notice the elements on the beam become smaller….. the more elements on the boom of the yagi give you more gain ie. for example 1 watt signal x 6db gain gives you 6 watts of ERP ( effective radiated power ) so it multiplies your power output effectively. But never forget the more elements on the yagi also reduces beam width…… meaning if you point the transmitter more than 15 degrees either side of the true direction of the drone you risk losing signal almost completely…… or return to home function taking over very quickly. Unlike the standard co-linear vertical antennas standard on drone controllers which radiate and receive omni-directionally ….. at 90 degrees to the target yet 360 degrees around the whole antenna…. Making it less likely to lose signal completely at reasonable range especially if you need to place the controller down for a moment its more forgiving…… you dont have the gain factor of a yagi giving you effectively more transmit power and more sensative receive but much narrower beam width….. hope that makes sense to you guys….

      I'm a mechanic/machine operator and through all the jargon I got what you meant. If I aim at the drone with the "extender" (lamens terms for me to understand), I should be good if I stay within that 15 degrees, just be vigilant?

      With the yagi uda's sold on amazon for these controllers its nowhere near as narrow as 15 degree beam width. Its more like 90 degrees, which is more than wide enough.

I got some yaggis for my mini 2 but never bothered using since fly in FCC mode instead and that plenty of range for me.

I have also tried the yagi's as well on my Mini 2 and Air 2S and didnt really see much difference since O2 and O3 are really good already . I still carry them in my bag and try them every once in a while just to see in different environments if there is any difference. I would say its marginal at best in my experience. They absolutely do work though and that's why I still carry them.

    Yep, it us Occusync's frequency hopping that is the problem, not the yagis.
    I have "superyagis" and really do need them in VLOS. Wet shrubs and trees seriously attenuate WiFi signals, and I often fly a few metres above them. Even in the countryside, farms use WiFi boosters which can interfere with the signal at ranges of around 50 metres.

    I remember when you made the same video with the mini 2 and said it makes a negligible difference. I used to have a mini 2 and brought the 5.8GHZ yagi but then I returned it after it made no difference. I now have a mini 3 pro with the RCN1 controller and won’t buy those yagis again. From my experience the yagi antenna only worked for me when I had the mini 1 with the fold out antenna. Maybe they will work for the DJI Air 3 with the screen controller but that would be more complex as that operates on 3 different frequencies.

    • @GAVINHR

      Yeah I answered this in another comment too, you’re right I did say that - based on the fact that the ocusync on the mini 2 did a great job on selecting the right frequency. Sadly that no longer seems to be the case especially with the mini 3 prop as I showed in the video, the air3 certainly won’t need extenders given the fact it’s got the 5.2ghz frequency now - that won’t won’t be congested at all and should give a signal equal to the autel

    Why don’t you just get the antenna radiation pattern from the manufacturer? Your 2.4 mhz antenna is a yagi and the 5.8 mhz appears to be a phased yagi. The radiation pattern will tell you the gain vs direction. The phased yagi will give you the higher gain over a wider angle to the drone. You should try making a phased 2.4 and try it too. Just look up phasing yagi’s.

    I thought the signal issue with the Mini 3 Pro was centered on its use with the new (let's call it new) RC Controller (with the inbuilt screen). This has no way I can see to add a "signal booster" because everything is internal. Do you know of any options here?

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nah the RC controller is absolutely fine, its a combo of the antenna position in the mini 3 and the fact ocusync isnt doing its job properly. Sadly running that controller there is not much option other than to do as advised and make sure you fix on the right frequency - this will help

      @GAVINHR  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well spotted ! Yep back then with ocusync 2.0 the mini 2 seemed to do a great job in changing frequencies to keep a stronger signal so my advice was to trust ocusync. As I showed in the video these days and particularly on the mini 3 ocusync seems to just get it wrong all the time so I personally believe this is now a better solution based on that information

    Even if it’s illegal to fly beyond VELOS who will enforce that. Whats the likelihood of actually getting into trouble doing it. When flying from my back garden I used to get 400m of range but in fcc mode i can get 800. That’s with the 5.8ghz frequency as I live in a built up area.

    They should be referred to as "Signal Stabilizers" because that is what they do.
    They are not signal boosters, they do not boost the power of the signal.
    They are not range extenders, they do not extend the drones rated range.
    They simply "Stabilize" the signal.
    And they work better then what is shown in this video.

    I see no mention or testing of antenna orientation. That’s a shame. Be aware in your use and testing that any radio frequency signal is most strongly radiated or received perpendicular to the orientation of an antenna and weakest in the direction you point the antenna. In other words, point the antennas up or at some other right angle to the drone, not towards the drone, so that the signal is strongest. This applies to all radios, including your home wifi router.

    If the RM330 wasn't so crap with range, we wouldn't need these addons. How in hell can a remote controller go to market without an antenna, or even an antenna port? I also see DJI have recently brought an almost identical controller...WITH ANTENNAS! I'm assuming the RM330 was designed with these dumb VLOS laws many countries enforce, therefore only needed internal antennas..
