I well remember these batting disasters. England tried a succession of new batsmen - the only one who turned out really successfully was Smith. The tail was far too long. Capel and Pringle scored a lot of runs in county cricket but they just weren't good enough to handle the world class Windies attack. That should have been obvious by this test match and the selectors made a bad call, more through desperation than anything else.
